Mbappe CONFIRMED as new France captain

Dharamsala's unique conditions a challenge – Mashrafe

Mashrafe Mortaza underlined the importance of getting used to Dharamsala’s unique conditions – breathing in high altitude and tuning themselves to the cold – quickly to put their best foot forward at the World T20 qualifers

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Mar-2016Bangladesh’s last tour of India was for the Champions Trophy in 2006. Mashrafe Mortaza, the captain, is just one of two surviving members – Shakib Al Hasan being the other – from that side.If Bangladesh were playing in any other part of India, where conditions were similar to their own, it wouldn’t come up as an issue. But Dharamsala has an elevation of approximately 4780 feet above sea level, which would make the conditions on offer a unique challenge for them. And to get accustomed, Bangladesh gave themselves one full day -Tuesday – when they held their only training session at the HPCA stadium after arriving in the country late on Monday, immediately after the Asia Cup final in Mirpur on Monday. There were plans to send the team to Dharamsala late in January for a short camp to get an idea of what to expect, but that was called off because of the harsh Dharamsala winter at the time.Mashrafe said while they had to get used to breathing in high altitude, apart from adjusting to the cold of the receding North Indian winter, in stark contrast to the warmer climes of Dhaka, they were only focused on the controllables after a creditable showing in the Asia Cup, where they beat UAE, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, on their way to being runners-up to India.”Indian conditions are mostly similar [to Bangladesh] but there is a difference here,” Mashrafe said. “You need to adjust to the breathing also. We needed time to adjust. It is cold at night and we have to play two matches at night [on March 11 and 13]. We will have to play at our best. We haven’t had too many chances of playing in India, that is true. There cannot be any excuses. Expect one or two guys, all are new to conditions in India but we are hopeful of doing our best.”While Netherlands have had time to suss up the conditions, having spent a week in Dharamsala, Bangladesh would be banking on their recent form to carry them through. “I think it’s has been great achievement as far as T20 is concerned,” he said. “We are growing up as a team. We did a good job in T20s last week. We have more challenges coming up.”

We are not afraid of any team – Sana Mir

The Pakistan Women’s team have a chance of making it to their first-ever semi-final in the Women’s World T20 and captain Sana Mir is unafraid of the challenge of playing a formidable England side on Sunday

‘I can’t ask for more from the girls’ – Sana Mir

Sana Mir received a thunderous applause as she walked in to the post-match press conference after her side beat Bangladesh Women in Delhi. She first allowed Sidra Ameen, who crafted a match-winning unbeaten 53, to soak in the applause and take her seat, before she followed. The big grin on Mir’s face told you a story of a captain, who in her last assignment at the helm, was close to achieving an important milestone in Pakistan women’s cricket history. The nine-wicket win over Bangladesh keeps Pakistan Women in contention for a place in the semi-finals of the World T20.Ameen, however, seemed more overawed facing questions, than she did while batting at the crease, especially unfurling those fierce cut shots to raze down a potentially tricky target of 114. “My captain has backed me, she showed faith in me,” she said, before breaking into a sheepish smile. “Momentum” and “confidence” were the buzzwords, her excitement clearly knowing no bounds, after her first half-century in international cricket.Until the 2012 Women’s World T20, Pakistan hadn’t won a single match in the tournament. Four years later, there scales have turned, and how. With wins over India and Bangladesh, their confidence and net run-rate, too, has taken received a massive fillip. Previous Pakistan teams would have looked at an upcoming clash against England Women as another step towards improving against a top side, but not this team.”We are not afraid of any team,” Mir declared authoritatively. “We have shown how much we have improved as a side. Cricket is played out on the field and not on paper. So we don’t believe they are favourites. The way we have played as a team in this tournament, I would say we have an equal chance. A lot of people would have written us off, but it doesn’t matter who we are playing. That is the positive attitude we will take into the next game.”Mir wasn’t being over-confident. The brutal honesty has stemmed from the performance of her bowling group that has adapted itself superbly. Anam Amin, the left-arm spinner may have well won her third successive Player-of-the-Match award for a haul of 2 for 12, had it not been for the ease with which Ameen began a potentially tricky chase on a pitch that slowed down as the evening progressed.”Our bowling has been outstanding throughout the tournament, credit to Anam Amin and Asmavia Iqbal,” Mir said. “To restrict West Indies to a little over 100 and India to below that was a special effort. That has injected tremendous confidence. Also, our openers didn’t start well in the first game, but there has been remarkable improvement in the next two games. The momentum is with us going into the game against England. We could have had a better result in one game (they lost to West Indies by four runs), but can’t ask for more from the girls.”Mir did not miss another opportunity to acknowledge the support of a festive Holi crowd. The official attendance was pegged at 1026. “” [Pakistan will win] chants were ringing loud as their flag fluttered. “It is wonderful to be in a country where people are chanting for you, it’s welcoming,” Mir said. We are enjoying the support. Hopefully we can continue to impress them with the way we play.”And what about the reception from back home? “Oh, the kind of support we have got from back home this time, I don’t think we’ve ever got that,” she smiled. “The kind of messages we have received from back home has been extremely encouraging. We just want to continue this going forward. The girls are enjoying this. But our prayers are with the men’s team as well. I hope they also give the fans reasons to smile.”

Chennai in danger of missing WT20 ticket

Chennai could lose out on hosting matches of next year’s World Twenty, to be staged in India, if the issue of its three locked stands remains unresolved

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Jun-2015Chennai could lose out on hosting matches of next year’s World Twenty20, to be staged in India, if the issue of its three locked stands remains unresolved. That was one of the important points of discussion during a meeting in Mumbai on Sunday between the ICC and BCCI officials, who are also yet to agree on the total number of venues for the tournament. While the ICC has recommended five venues, the BCCI is in favour of eight. A final decision is likely to be taken at the ICC Board meeting in Barbados in the last week of June.Although no venues were shortlisted, it is understood that the ICC team was specifically concerned about MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Keeping in mind that the three stands (I, J, K) that have been locked during the matches in Chepauk in the last three years, the ICC made it clear that matches could not be played in front of empty stands. The BCCI itself is wary of the venue as ESPNcricinfo has learned that Chepauk does not feature in its shortlist of eight venues. Although the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association is trying hard to get the requisite approvals to throw open the three stands, officials have conceded that Chepauk is likely to miss out.The three stands, which were opened in 2011, were locked and sealed by the Chennai corporation during the 2012 and 2013 editions of the IPL. With the issue unresolved, in the 2014 IPL, Chennai Super Kings played all their home matches in Ranchi. This IPL, too, the three stands remained shut and was one of the main reasons behind the play-off match involving Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore being shifted to Ranchi in May.At the meeting, the BCCI was represented by an eight-man team lead by secretary Anuraj Thakur along with Sundar Raman, Ratnakar Shetty, MV Sridhar, RP Shah, Amrit Mathur and Hemang Amin. The ICC team comprised Campbell Jamieson, Chris Tetley and Dhiraj Malhotra. The BCCI informed that the main reason for insisting on eight venues was the volume of matches involved. A total of 35 matches will be played between March 11 and April 3, 2016 to be contested by 16 teams. The BCCI reasoned that if they stuck to five grounds, each venue would end up hosting seven matches per venue which would only make it difficult to fill up the stadium. An official privy to the discussions said the ICC was happy with the reasons. The twin concerns the ICC had was tackling cost and travel. It is understood the BCCI has given an undertaking to take care of the travel of the teams. The official said the ICC team would now report back to the board to discuss the costs.

Sarina Wiegman a Burna Boy fan?! Lionesses boss reveals her surprising most played song for 2023 – and it’s not what you would expect

Sarina Wiegman has hinted at how she entertains herself when not on England duty, after a reporter asked the Lionesses boss about her Spotify Wrapped.

Wiegman asked about her most played songSurprised reporter by responding with Burna BoyPress conference precedes big Nations League clashWHAT HAPPENED?

It wasn't the type of question the Dutch manager is used to fielding in press conferences, and she seemed thrown by the digression into musical tastes. And Wiegman's answer revealed another side of her character that may have surprised some fans.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT WEIGMAN SAID

"I didn't expect this so I don't know the name of the song," said a surprised Wiegman when asked which song topped her Spotify Wrapped playlist, after the release of the popular music streaming feature yesterday. "But it is the song with Burna Boy and Ed Sheeran. I definitely played that song the most." Who would have thought the Lionesses boss was a big Burna fan?

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wiegman's comments come as she prepares her team for a crunch match in the UEFA Nations League against her home country, the Netherlands. The Lionesses will be desperate to right the wrongs of the team's previous clash with the Oranje in September, when they were beaten 2-1 after a late winner from Renate Jansen.

Getty ImagesWHAT NEXT FOR WIEGMAN?

There's been plenty of speculation about Wiegman's future recently, with widespread talk about the Euros-winning boss succeeding Gareth Southgate as England Men's manager. According to the Lionesses coach, it is a "matter of time" before a female coach takes charge of a top men's team in England, although she refused to be drawn on the potentially vacant Three Lions role.

Moeen joins England for second Test

England have added offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali to their squad ahead of the second Test in Grenada, which starts on April 21.

George Dobell at North Sound15-Apr-2015England have added offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali to their squad ahead of the second Test in Grenada, which starts on April 21.Moeen was not named in the original squad after he sustained a side strain during the World Cup, but he played in Worcestershire’s first Championship match of the season and reported no reaction after bowling. He was then assessed by the ECB medical team and cleared to meet up with the rest of the squad in Grenada ahead of the second Test.Having bowled only 11 overs against Yorkshire, England are keen to ensure Moeen is fit to bowl the heavy allocation of overs that could be required of him in a Test. They will therefore assess him further before making a decision whether to send anyone else in the party home. But it remains likely that Adil Rashid will return to England before the end of the tour. While the England management retain high hopes that Rashid, the 27-year-old legspinner, could go on to play an important job for the team in the future, he produced a modest performance in the warm-up game in St Kitts and missed out on the spinner’s spot in the first Test team to James Tredwell. With no games between Tests, there is little further opportunity for him to impress.Rashid is one of six Yorkshire players in the squad and one of four not picked for the XI in this game. While that situation has irked some at Yorkshire – the club president, Dickie Bird, chided the England management over the situation – Peter Moores and co. feel they need the reserves in case any of the players struggle to get through three Tests in such a short period of time. There are just three days between the first two Tests. While those players not required in the final Test, in Barbados, could be released once the game starts – with the exception of a substitute fielder or two – Yorkshire do not have a Championship match that week. But it could be that any players returning early to England will be considered for the ODI in Ireland on May 8. None of the players involved in the Barbados Test will be available for that game – they are only scheduled to return to the UK at 6am on May 7 – so England are expected to field a new-look side, almost certainly captained by James Taylor and likely to include Kent’s Sam Billings.Moeen established himself as England’s first-choice spinner during the Test series against India when he claimed 19 wickets; only one behind Ray Illingworth’s record for an England spinner in a home series against India. Moeen also made a Test century against Sri Lanka and will strengthen England’s batting. But he may yet find it tricky to displace Tredwell, who bowled beautifully in the first innings in Antigua and finished with Test-best figures of 4 for 47.

USWNT beat China in friendlyCoffey takes over No. 4 shirtScored in victory for hostsWHAT HAPPENED?

The USWNT came from behind to beat China 2-1 in a friendly in Texas. Coffey, who took over Sauerbrunn's No. 4 shirt for the game, curled home a fine equaliser to net her first international goal for the Stars and Stripes. Jaedyn Shaw then followed up with the winner on her first-ever USWNT start to make it a good night for Twila Kilgore's side.

AdvertisementTHE EXPLANATION

There was no Sauerbrunn in the USWNT squad for the game, with the veteran defender missing out alongside other big names such as Alex Morgan, Alyssa Naeher, and Crystal Dunn. Interim coach Kilgore instead went for a youthful roster for the two friendlies with China. The absences allowed Coffey to take on the No. 4 shirt, although she also admitted after the game she had asked the long-time captain for permission.

GettyWHAT COFFEY SAID

Coffey told : "I would never pick it without addressing Rebecca! So I reached out to her and I was like, ‘Hey, would you mind if I wore this? I’d love to just honor you and channel your energy. Obviously, Becky is my teammate, but she's also a hero of mine and someone I look up to. I told her after the game, ‘This means that you scored an international goal.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, is that how it works?’"

Whereas Kelechi Iheanacho helped Leicester City pick up a point at Old Trafford against Manchester United, his counterpart Alex Iwobi’s lack of concentration denied Everton a point against West Ham.

The Nigerian was on the scoresheet as Leicester City drew 1-1 against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Iheanacho scored the first goal of the game in the 63rd minute before it was cancelled out by Fred's strike three minutes later.

This was his 36th Premier League goal, with only four other Nigerian players managing more (Yakubu 95, Nwankwo Kanu 54, Efan Ekoku 52, and Shola Ameobi 43).

Mendy was in goal as Chelsea suffered a 4-1 defeat to Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have now conceded four or more goals in the Premier League at home to a newly-promoted side for just the second time – also 2-5 against West Brom in April 2021 – both occasions under Thomas Tuchel.

It was also the second time that Chelsea have lost by three or more goals in a Premier League London derby at Stamford Bridge, after a 0-3 defeat to Arsenal in April 1997.

UAE more worried by storm than WI

Jason Holder refused to worry about the weather in Napier, but UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir did not want his team’s journey home disrupted

Firdose Moonda in Napier14-Mar-2015The Southern Ocean sparkles a shade of aquamarine, a gentler colour than the sapphire of the Mediterranean or the Indian. Its waves lap against the shoreline, so softly that they seem to want to mitigate against the harsh texture of the black pebble beach. The surface does not look the most comfortable place to sunbathe but with the sun’s golden rays creating a mirage, it’s magical in its own way. So much so, that if you strolled down Napier’s Marine Parade on Saturday morning, you would not believe there was a storm on the way.But 3,000 kilometres north, Cyclone Pam has lashed the island of Vanuatu where it is being called the worst weather system in 30 years. It is heading towards New Zealand’s north-east and is expected to make landfall late Sunday night but the precursor to it – rain and wind – could arrive before that and it may find its way to McLean Park. Currently the forecast is for drizzle and heavier rain later; a no-result will send West Indies crashing out of the World Cup.Under the circumstances, Jason Holder could be looking anxiously to the heavens – which remained cloudless on Saturday afternoon – and hoping, but the young captain has chosen to stare straight ahead in his approach to the crunch game. “It’s not on my mind at all. We can’t play the weather,” he said. “If it comes, it comes.”Instead, it is the UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir who is monitoring the weather updates, albeit for a slightly different reason. “I am worried about the cyclone. We’ve got a flight back on Monday. It has been a very long hectic tour, although we have enjoyed it, and we need to go back safely,” Mohammad Tauqir said.Irrespective of the result, UAE will leave New Zealand on Monday and head back to the Emirates by mid-week but, unlike some of the other sides, their players will not able to take break after six weeks on the road. “Our employers are waiting for us,” Tauqir said. His self-titled “amateur” side all have day jobs – those who are not Emirati citizens, which is most of the squad, would not be able to stay in the country if they did not – and this tournament was more about the experience than the outcome. On that front, they have enjoyed every bit of it.”We started well in the games against Zimbabwe and Ireland and then we had one bad game against India. Even against Pakistan and South Africa, it was a decent performance from our side. It has been long but we got a few good breaks between games,” Tauqir said. “We would like to end this tournament on a winning note.”With UAE talking like a side with one foot on the plane, West Indies may be more confident of their chances of doing what they need to do to advance, even though they have left it late and irrespective of the weather.”Any team would have loved to qualified by now and we’ve been up and down but I have confidence in the guys to produce what is needed,” Holder said. “I can’t say we’ve been horrible. What is important is that we forget the past. The better we do, the better our chances later in the quarter finals as well.”The World Cup has already seen one weather system, tropical cyclone Marcia, which passed through Brisbane and washed out the match between Australia and Bangladesh but has not had any other significant weather interruptions.

Rajasthan players set for Ranji return

A ruling of the Rajasthan High Court has opened the doors for the state’s cricketers to play in the BCCI’s domestic competitions this year

Nagraj Gollapudi01-Oct-2014The new appointments

Senior selection committee: Vinod Mathur, Sanjay Vyas, Nazmul Hussain, Taposh Chatterjee. Vivebhan Singh Expert: Roger Binny

Junior selection committee: Kuldip Mathur, Pramod Yadav, Sukhvinder Singh. Expert: Connor Williams

Women’s selection committee: Megha Gaur, Shabhana Khan, Pratima Bharti. Expert: Rita Dey

A ruling of the Rajasthan High Court has opened the doors for the state’s cricketers to play in the BCCI’s domestic competitions this year. The court passed an interim order appointing selection committees that will pick teams to represent the state in various BCCI domestic tournaments in the 2014-15 season. The teams will play represent Rajasthan, but not under the usual banner of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA).The order was passed by Justice MN Bhandari, who was hearing a writ petition filed originally on September 16 on behalf Nikhil Doru and others, and signed by 75 Rajasthan players.”This order has been passed with the consent to make temporary arrangement to keep representation of the state of Rajasthan in various tournaments to be organised by the BCCI,” the court stated in its five-page order. The arrangement will come to an end at the completion of the 2014-15 season or when the dispute between the BCCI and the RCA is settled, whichever comes first. The BCCI had suspended the RCA in May after the latter elected Lalit Modi, an expelled administrator, as its president. The BCCI then omitted RCA from the domestic programme for the forthcoming season, which starts from next week. That had resulted in much angst among the players, and eventually the filing of the writ petition. The court had subsequently issued notices to the BCCI and the RCA, seeking responses from both on the writ petition, which had argued that the players were suffering only for one reason: “the grudge between the BCCI and RCA.”On Tuesday Bhandari asked both BCCI and RCA counsels to put forth a joint proposal to facilitate Rajasthan teams to participate in various domestic tournaments. Both parties were asked to nominate a set of names each, who would effectively act as selectors. Today the court finalised the three groups – one for the men’s team, one for the juniors and another for women’s cricket – the senior selection panel is comprised of five members while the other two have a set of three selectors. Each panel has a BCCI-nominated selector, who will “associate” with the other team members in picking teams.According to the court order the RCA had “proposed” five names which the “BCCI had no objection” with. But Bhandari decided to replace Ratan Singh with Sanjay Vyas due to the latter’s vast experience. “For senior selection committee, name of five members have been proposed by the RCA, to which, the BCCI has no objection but after considering those names, I find requirement of one substitution, which would be of Mr Ratan Singh with that of Mr Sanjay Vyas, who remained captain of Ranji team for quite long time,” the court order said. The court also pruned the original list of five and six selectors nominated by the RCA for the junior and women’s panels to three. The court pointed out that the BCCI would compensate the selectors during their tenure. The court also asked Taposh Chatterjee, who is currently a member of BCCI’s ground and pitches committee, to coordinate and oversee the appointment/requirements of the teams’ support staff, and asked the BCCI to approve the same. It was also made clear that the support staff would work “under the directions of the court” and their payments would be stood by the BCCI. Chatterjee is also the head groundsman at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Rajasthan’s home ground. For the venue of Rajasthan’s home matches, the court revealed that RCA had “offered” to provide Sawai Mansingh Stadium “for tournaments as and when required by selectors or BCCI for organising tournaments”. The court also clarified that the BCCI would take care of paying the charges for the stadium and conducting the matches. The writ petition was originally filed by a Jaipur-based advocate Sachin Mehta and argued by senior counsel Sudhir Gupta, on behalf of Doru, a former Rajasthan wicketkeeper, who last played for the state in 2009. Even if Mehta claimed that he had independently approached the court on behalf of the players, though, indirectly he was representing the RCA – it is understood that the RCA officials told the players they would be appealing to the court on behalf of the players. For its part, the BCCI had originally appointed an ad-hoc subcommittee to oversee the disputed states of Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttarakhand. But the subcommittee’s attempts at working a solution out with the RCA and the Rajasthan government – the RCA is governed by the Rajasthan Sports Act – failed, and so the deadlock continued. Now, the BCCI has readily accepted the court order, secretary Sanjay Patel said. “The BCCI has all along maintained that we do not want the players to suffer. We are delighted that that the players’ interests have been taken care of,” he told ESPNcricinfo.Despite its “acceptance”, the BCCI wanted to make sure it did not cede ground to the RCA in any way and hence sent one of its senior-most counsel, PR Raman, to argue the case on Tuesday. Following the court’s ruling, the BCCI also confirmed in a statement that it did not in any way change the status of the RCA. “The suspension of the membership of the RCA continues and would not stand in the way of the players’ participation in BCCI tournaments,” the release said.Mehmod Abdi, the deputy president at RCA, it was “win, win situation for all, particularly the RCA and the Rajasthan cricketers”. Abdi, a legal counsel himself, said the court intervention was “humane and compassionate”, one which “protected” the interest of the players.”In fact, cricketers were being unnecessarily punished. Under the bylaws, at best the member state can be suspended, not the players,” Abdi said in a statement. “Notwithstanding the disputes between RCA and BCCI, which are being addressed at different forums, this could be the best solution that could happen where under order of the court both BCCI and RCA have come under one roof to find a way out of the impasse other than the stated position of BCCI.”
