Gazi five-for in vain as KCA march to victory

A round-up of Dhaka Premier Division 2014-15 matches played on November 27, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2014Sohag Gazi’s 5-63 was in vain as Kalabagan Cricket Academy crushed Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 96 runs. The offpsinner, who had been suspended from bowling in international cricket in October, picked up his first five-for of the season, but KCA rode on Mahmudul Hasan’s 81 and Nafees Iqbal’s 64 to put up 239 for 8 in 50 overs.Dhanmondi Club were bowled out for 143 runs in 40 overs with Amit Mazumder’s 51 the only big knock. Mohammad Sharif and Bishwanath Halder took three wickets each.Legends of Rupganj suffered their first defeat in this season’s Dhaka Premier Division, losing to Brothers Union by five wickets in BKSP-3. The loss does not affect their standing at the top of the points table.Batting first, Rupganj were all out for 192 in 49.1 overs with Mosharraf Hossain’s 80 off 87 balls holding the innings together. Asif Hasan took three wickets. Brothers reached the target in 47.2 overs with Nazimuddin and Joe Denly hitting 51 each.Enamul Haque jnr took 4 for 37 to help Prime Bank Cricket Club beat Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club by six wickets. Doleshwar were all out for 190 runs in 48 overs and Dawid Malan was the top-scorer with 70.Prime Bank reached the target in 45.3 overs with Soumya Sarkar making 55 and Shuvagata Hom unbeaten on 51.

Malan century worth the wait

Middlesex capitalised on a decent first day with a first-innings score of 488, which included a first Championship century in nearly two years for Dawid Malan

ScorecardDawid Malan made his first Championship hundred since the 2012 season•Getty ImagesMiddlesex capitalised on a decent first day with a first-innings score of 488, which included a first Championship century in nearly two years for Dawid Malan. Northamptonshire did well to curb the scoring early on but, after getting the monkey off his back, Malan was able to take the hosts to an imposing total. His relief at the close, showered and well groomed, was evident: “It’s definitely been a long time coming.”Armed with the new ball straight away, Northants had a breakthrough within the first over as Azharullah made use of the early morning conditions to trap Neil Dexter lbw. Joe Denly was the next to follow after a breezy 17 and, for a moment, it seemed Northants might skittle out Middlesex before lunch. However, a stand of 128 between Malan and John Simpson took Middlesex past 400 and ensured they made the most of their handy position overnight. Simpson’s knock of 67 was key, not least in allowing Malan the opportunity to end his century drought, before going on to his highest Championship score.Upon reaching 90, his scoring options were limited; the bowlers offering him little width, as Stephen Peters backed them with a tight field. With one ball of the morning session remaining, Malan found himself on 96 and on strike to Steven Crook.Sizing up a vacant leg-side boundary, he put everything into a full ball on leg stump, connecting well, only for the helmet of the bat-pad fielder to take a blow and save four runs. It was by no means a chance but Malan, walking back to the pavilion for lunch with a little look to the heavens, knew it was one of a few bits of luck that had fallen his way in the morning. Soon after the interval, 26 balls after entering the nineties, he had his hundred.”I definitely had the nervous nineties,” Malan said. “It really didn’t feel like I was going to get out of them to be honest.”His uncertainty no doubt cost Middlesex their final batting point, but you could forgive Malan the tentativeness. Since his last Championship century, 121 against Warwickshire in August 2012, he has passed 90 on three occasions and failed to make it count. Two of those failures were this season, the last coming against Middlesex’s current opponents, at Wantage Road in May.While he has been a steady performer in limited-overs cricket, Malan’s four-day form is best described as frustrating. On song, he is a real treat to watch, timing the ball emphatically, with the classical verve of a left-hander. But for all the languid strokeplay, he has a tendency to overthink his own game. Even today, in the moments before he clocked short leg on the head, he had decided on the ball he would receive (a bouncer) and the shot he would play (a clip over third man) before neither came to pass.Last season was no different as he endured one of his leanest periods at the club, with just 387 runs in 19 innings. Unhappy with his limited-overs form, he dedicated most of the winters of 2011 and 2012 to that aspect of his game, while assuming his four-day game would fall in place accordingly. It didn’t, and Malan soon found himself out of the XI.”It’s probably the first time I was properly left out at Middlesex,” he said. “It was a big hit for me but it brought me back down to earth and reminded me that I can’t neglect one format and concentrate on the others.”Even in that time out, he would spend many a match day at Lord’s netting on the Nursery Ground or the indoor school with Middlesex’s batting coach, Mark Ramprakash. At the time, some felt a few days away were best, but he has shown so far, with almost 600 runs by the end of July and an average of 45, that it was worthwhile. As for the destination of this game, Malan was looking to the first session on Tuesday and a wish for at least four more Northants wickets. By his calculation, that would allow Middlesex to sculpt the game as they wish.In the 26 overs they had at the visitors before the rain came, they had accounted for Peters, James Middlebrook and Matthew Spriegel. However James Kettlebrough, on Championship debut, has looked assured so far for his 42, particularly against the usually economical Tim Murtagh, who he took for five boundaries in the 29 balls he faced off him. As the light got worse, his partner Rob Newton did well to survive a barrage of well-directed short balls from Steven Finn. No doubt there will be more to come.

Win would be 'fitting farewell' for Jayawardene – Sangakkara

The Sri Lanka team had spoken about keeping emotions in check in Mahela Jayawardene’s final match, but they will relish the chance to bid him farewell with a 2-0 series win, Kumar Sangakkara said

Andrew Fidel Fernando at the SSC17-Aug-2014The Sri Lanka team had spoken about keeping emotions in check in Mahela Jayawardene’s final match, but they will relish the chance to bid him farewell with a 2-0 series win, Kumar Sangakkara said. Sri Lanka finished day four three wickets away from victory, with Pakistan still 144 runs adrift of their target.”As a team and a player we knew about Mahela’s retirement, but we didn’t want to think only about that but to perform as a team,” Sangakkara said. “That’s what we spoke about from the first day. Because if we were to give him a fitting farewell the best thing we could do is to send him off with a win. We all know about Mahela will be greatly missed by the team in the future. But this is what sports is like. Sportsmen come and go and others will take over.”Sarfraz Ahmed, who made a century in the first innings, remains at the crease, but with the ball taking substantial turn, and misbehaving for the seam bowlers as well, the greatest threat to a Sri Lanka victory comes from the weather, Sangakkara said. Rain is forecast for Monday morning, but it is expected to ease in the afternoon.”The only thing that can probably bother us is the rain. They’re seven down. I’m not sure whether Junaid Khan will bat. It’s unfortunate, we heard he’s got a concussion. But the game is not over until the last wicket falls. We’re going to come back tomorrow and make sure we try and get those wickets as early as we can.”Sangakkara also said Sri Lanka are so well placed in the series because the team had set itself simple goals and maintained high standards throughout both Tests. That had been the change, he said, since the South Africa series, which Sri Lanka lost 1-0, having been defeated in Galle, and failing to take the final two South Africa wickets at SSC.”South Africa really outplayed us in Galle. Probably it was the first innings that really lost us that game, and the first session of the last day. But we dominated South Africa at the SSC and had we not lost about 20-23 overs because of the rain, we could have won that Test and drawn the series.”What we really took from that is at no stage in Test cricket you can go away from your basics. It’s about getting a very good first innings, being competitive and not being shut out until the first innings is over.”That’s what we did when Pakistan got 450 in Galle. We got 80 runs ahead of them and then again here we managed to get over 300 which was a competitive total on a track like this. Then we managed to keep Pakistan just about there, and here we are in the driving seat. It has taken a very special effort from Rangana in both games to get us here. When we do the basics well, rather than the strategy being too flowery and too abstract, that’s when we play our best cricket.”

Bangladesh board keen on BPL third season

The BCB is looking for a window in the 2014-15 season to host the controversy-ridden BPL again

Mohammad Isam17-Apr-2014Despite a surfeit of controversies marring the first two seasons of the Bangladesh Premier League, the BCB is looking for a window in the coming season to host the league again. The second edition was held in January-February 2013, after which problems over player payment and a prolonged match-fixing investigation stalled the domestic T20 tournament. At this stage, the November 2014 to January 2015 slot is being looked at by the BCB. Bangladesh are scheduled to take on Zimbabwe in a Test series in early November, while according to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), Pakistan are supposed to tour Bangladesh in January 2015.”BCB is willing to stage the BPL,” Ismail Haider Mallick, BPL governing council’s member secretary, said. “We have selected an approximate date to hold the tournament. We are looking to arrange the tournament between November 2014 and January 2015. However, we of course have to see the international and local cricket’s schedule first.”Mallick also said that the tournament’s event management company, Game On Sports, have paid Tk 10 crore ($1.3 million) of the 19 crore (approx $2.45 million) it owed to the BPL, albeit in three parts. “Game On Sports has given a cheque worth Tk 10 crore. We already received Tk 2.5 crore (approx $323,000) and we will get another 2.5 crore by April 20 while we will be receiving the remaining Tk 5 crore (approx $645,000) very soon,” he said.Whether this payment would be used to pay the players was left unsaid, but it is one of two major problems in the BPL. Even now, several players have remained unpaid. The last reported claim was on February 28 when Netherlands’ Ryan ten Doeschate, West Indies’ Kevon Cooper, Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor and England players Ravi Bopara and Jason Roy said that they were still to get money from the Chittagong Kings. The other major problem is the BPL corruption investigation and while the tribunal has given its short verdict, the BCB is planning to appeal against their judgment after only one individual among nine accused was found guilty of “being party to an effort to fix” a match in the 2013 BPL. The long verdict is still due, although it was to be announced shortly after the World T20 held in Bangladesh.Last year, BCB president Nazmul Hassan had said that it would be difficult to hold the BPL without clearing it of the controversies.

Northern Districts sneak into final

Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 79 off just 55 deliveries to set up a narrow three-run win for Northern Districts against Canterbury, and secure their place in Saturday’s final against Otago

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFile photo: Kane Williamson’s 55-ball 79 pushed Northern Districts to a mammoth total•Getty ImagesAt the start of the 19th over of their innings, Canterbury needed 20 runs to pull off an incredible chase, and with their captain, an in-form Peter Fulton, still at the crease, the team would’ve though that they had every chance of overcoming Northern Districts for a place in Saturday’s final against Otago.Fulton had been making sweet connection with the ball, slamming six sixes before that over to bring Canterbury to within touching distance of victory, and when Chris Tremain lined up to bowl the penultimate over, not many would have bet against a Northern Districts defeat. However, the seamer conceded just five runs off his over, restricting Fulton and his partner at the other end, Andrew Ellis, with yorkers. Tremain’s heroic effort meant that Canterbury needed 15 off the last over. Scott Kuggeleijn held his nerve and just like Tremain, frustrated Fulton with full-length deliveries to set up a narrow three-run win for Northern Districts.Electing to bat, Northern Districts were lifted by an unbroken partnership of 73 for the fourth wicket between Scott Styris and Kane Williamson, which eventually helped the team post a formidable 181 for 4. Styris, though, had only contributed 29 to that stand, allowing the more aggressive Williamson to get among the Canterbury bowlers. Williamson remained unbeaten on 79, with seven fours and a six.The defeat would’ve been all that more difficult to swallow for Canterbury and Fulton in particular, as he had almost single-handedly dragged the team from a precarious 37 for 3, to within one scoring shot of a place in the finals.Canterbury had lost their openers as well as No. 3 Dean Brownlie inside seven overs of the chase, but Fulton, coming in at No. 4, unleashed a counterattack along with Ronnie Hira. The pair took 22 runs off Kuggeleijn’s first over, and from 37 in the seventh over, Canterbury were 121 by the 14th. However, keeping with the see-saw nature of the contest, the momentum once again swung Northern Districts’ way as Canterbury lost three more quick wickets to stumble to 129 for 6.Fulton, however, remained unfazed and dragged the tail with him to keep the match alive until the very last ball. He needed a six to seal the win, but this time, Kuggeleijn won the mini-battle to leave Fulton stranded on 88, and Canterbury three runs from a place in the final.

Parnell unlikely to bowl in Port Elizabeth Test

Wayne Parnell is unlikely to bowl for the rest of the second Test after straining his groin

Firdose Moonda in Port Elizabeth22-Feb-2014Wayne Parnell is unlikely to bowl for the rest of the second Test after straining his groin. Parnell left the field on the third morning after delivering 8.3 overs and was immediately taken to hospital for scans. The scans showed no tear but the strain was significant enough to rule him out of action for the next five-seven days.Morne Morkel said although South Africa’s bowlers would have a greater workload in the second innings in Parnell’s absence, they would be willing to “put in any extra effort that’s needed.”Parnell was spotted walking around the field after the day’s play with a member of South Africa’s team management. He took his steps gingerly and made slow progress, a sign running will not come too easy for him.Although Parnell will probably not be able to bowl again in the Test, he will bat if needed. His status for the Newlands Test is still uncertain, given his troubled history with groin strains. In 2010, he had picked up a strain during the IPL, which forced him out of the tournament and kept him out of the game for months, while also stunting his progress at the international level. He yo-yoed in and out of South Africa’s limited-overs sides after debuting in 2009 but had to wait four years and three days for a Test recall. Parnell played three Tests for South Africa in 2010 and was left out of the side until this Test, in which he replaced Ryan McLaren, who was suffering from concussion.Parnell’s progression was on show from the first ball he bowled in the Test, when he dismissed Alex Doolan. Parnell had another wicket in that over and bowled consistently at speeds in the upper 140kph.

Umar Gul joins ODI squad in UAE

Umar Gul has been called up to the ODI squad for the remainder of the series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. He will join the team on December 22, the day of the third match

Umar Farooq21-Dec-2013Umar Gul, the Pakistan fast bowler, will return to international cricket following a nine-month injury layoff, after the selectors included him in the squad for the remainder of the ODI series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. He will join the squad on Sunday, ahead of the third of five matches.”The national selection committee in consultation with the tour selection committee has decided to send Umar Gul to UAE as part of national ODI squad,” the PCB said. “He will join the Pakistan team on December 22.”The decision to pick Gul was made after Pakistan lost the second ODI in Dubai by six wickets despite posting 284, due to sloppy bowling in the death overs. Following the defeat, which left the series 1-1, Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq immediately expressed concern about the lack of experience among his bowlers.Gul sustained a knee injury in March during the second ODI against South Africa in Centurion, and missed five series since, including the Champions Trophy. Following the injury, he travelled to Australia for surgery and after six weeks of rest, began his rehabilitation. He eased himself back into competitive cricket by featuring in List A matches in October and went on to play the Department Twenty20 Cup for Habib Bank, but his form remained unimpressive.Gul was to make a return against South Africa in October after regaining full fitness, but lacked match practice and continued his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. He subsequently failed a fitness Test before the announcement of the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series, and was asked to continue playing domestic cricket to regain his rhythm and form. He did that by taking 11 wickets against Port Qasim Authority in the President’s Trophy.

Gazi Tank loss gives Prime Doleshwar chance at title

A round-up of the Dhaka Premier Division matches played on November 25, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2013A century from Gazi Tank Cricketers’ captain Mahmudullah was in vain as the side lost by 54 runs to Mohammedan Sporting Club, squandering a chance to seal their maiden title triumph in the Dhaka Premier Division. With Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club beating Kalabagan Cricket Academy, the last league round game between Gazi Tank and Prime Doleshwar SC on November 27 is a virtual final as both teams have 20 points from their games so far. The team with the most points at the end of the Super League will win the Dhaka Premier Division title.Set a target of 269, Gazi Tank were struggling at 7 for 3 in the fourth over, before Mahmudullah led the side’s recovery. He was involved in key partnerships with opener Imrul Kayes, Ryan Ten Doeschate and Ashar Zaidi for the fourth, fifth and sixth wickets, respectively, before falling a 125-ball 106. Mahmudullah’s second List A hundred included 12 fours and two sixes. His wicket in the 41st over, however, ended Gazi Tank’s resistance and they folded in the 42nd over for 214.Earlier, a 109-run third wicket stand between Upul Tharanga and Samit Patel and a cameo from Mashrafe Mortaza helped Mohammedan SC post 268 for 6. Tharanga and Patel came together at the fall of Shamsur Rahman’s wicket in the 19th over and the pair batted for the next 20 overs, Tharanga scored 62 off 90 balls while Samit Patel was out for 76 off 90 balls. Mortaza, who came in to bat in the 47th over, blasted a 15-ball 37 with six fours and a six before his fall in the last over.Dawid Malan’s fourth List A hundred helped Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club go level on points with Gazi Tank Cricketers in the Super League table, after securing a 15-run win over Kalabagan Cricket Academy in Fatullah.Malan’s 120-ball 123 included eight fours and six sixes, as he helped Prime DSC overcome a shaky start in which their openers, as well as Rony Talukder were all dismissed within 10 overs, leaving the team at 42 for 3. Malan was involved in two big partnerships – an 80-run stand for the fourth wicket with Mominul Haque and a sixth-wicket partnership of 104 runs with Sabbir Rahman – that eventually propelled the team to 287 for 7 in their 50 overs.KCA began poorly with the openers Avishek Mitra and Zakaria Masud both departing after 4.1 overs. They were precariously placed at 7 for 2, but Hamilton Masakadza and Marshall Ayub led the recovery, adding 123 runs in 21.2 overs for the third wicket. KCA were stable at 130 for 2, but Masakadza fell for a run-a-ball 69 in the 26th over, while Ayub lost his wicket for 67 in the 33rd. In between those two dismissals, Abdul Mazid had also been run-out for one to leave KCA at 159 for 5. Sharifullah’s late surge – a 55-ball 72 – was not enough for KCA as Prime DSC restricted them to 272 for 8.Mushfiqur Rahim led Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club’s charge once again, scoring a brisk 82 before Nahidul Islam and Elton Chigumbura took the side to a narrow, two-wicket win over Prime Bank Cricket Club.Chasing a target of 257, Dhanmondi Club were struggling at 73 for 4, before Mushfiqur stepped up and added 107 runs with Tanveer Haider for the fifth wicket. The pair, however, were dismissed in successive overs, Mushfiqur falling for 82 off 74 balls, with the score at 180 for 6. However, Nahidul and Chigumbura added 61 in nearly 10 overs to take the side closer to the target. Chigumbura remained unbeaten on 28 off 35 balls as Dhanmondi edged to victory with three balls to spare.Earlier, half-centuries from Ravi Bopara and Taibur Rahman helped Prime Bank reach 256 for 6 after the side were struggling at 64 for 3. Bopara and Taibur added 114 runs for the fourth wicket and Taibur finished unbeaten on 89 off 103 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

Shakib's six overwhelms Trinidad in low-scorer

Only four batsmen reached double figures and two bowlers took five-fors in Barbados Trident’s low-scoring four-wicket win against Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel in Bridgetown

The T20 match actually lasted just over 20 overs and only 105 runs were scored in all on the same ground where over 300 were scored in the opening match of the Caribbean Premier League.Jason Holder accounted for two of the top three T&T batsmen, who fell within five overs after they elected to bat. It was a Shakib Al Hasan show from there on as he ran through the batting line up, dismissing the next six batsmen to finish with figures of 6 for 6 from his four overs. The solo performance had started much earlier when he took the openers’ catches off Holder and Shannon Gabriel. His spell included a triple-wicket maiden, the tenth over of the innings, in which he trapped Dwayne Bravo lbw with an arm ball for 5, got Nicolas Pooran caught at short leg for a duck, and then rattled Kevon Cooper’s stumps on the last ball of the over. From 40 for 4, T&T were now 40 for 7. Shakib came back to dismiss Samuel Badree and Kevin O’Brien in his fourth over. Gabriel finished the innings with his second wicket and only two batsmen, Davy Jacobs and Ross Taylor, reached double figures.Chasing only 53, Jonathan Carter gave Barbados a flying start smashing two sixes in the first over in which Sulieman Benn conceded 20 runs. But Fidel Edwards counterattacked by dismissing the openers in his first over with his swing and pace. Benn continued and had Shoaib Malik caught at second slip for 5. Barbados’ hopes of finishing the chase easily were dashed further when Edwards got Umar Akmal caught at slip and took two more wickets, of Shakib and Kyle Mayers, in his third over to reduce Barbados to 39 for 6. However, they needed only 14 more and Ashley Nurse finished it off two overs later with a four over the midwicket boundary.Barbados are at the top of the table with six points from three unbeaten matches.
