Jude Bellingham should ignore Real Madrid, Man City and PSG – and stay at Borussia Dortmund for another year

All of Europe's richest clubs want to sign the England midfielder, but his development would be better served by another season at Signal Iduna Park

So, now we know. Liverpool are out of the running to sign Jude Bellingham this summer, which is a shame both for the club and the player. Because a move to Merseyside made so much sense.

Liverpool are in dire need of a new Steven Gerrard, while Anfield would have provided Bellingham with the perfect platform to prove himself as a truly generational talent.

He wouldn't have just been a guaranteed starter, he would have been the foundation on which Jurgen Klopp constructed his next great Liverpool team.

Unfortunately, this season's dramatic dip in form, which will likely result in the Reds missing out on Champions League football and financing next season, has put paid to any hope the German coach had of landing Bellingham.

After all, Dortmund are, quite understandably, seeking around €150 million (£132m/$165m) for their most prized possession and Liverpool are no state-sponsored club. They simply do not have the resources to sign the most-coveted teenager in world football overhaul their squad.

Bellingham, of course, still has plenty of potential destinations to choose from, but are any of them really as attractive as Anfield?

GettyManchester City

Manchester City are obviously one of the leading contenders to sign Bellingham and the prospect of working with Pep Guardiola would appeal to the England youngster.

Crucially, unlike Liverpool, money is no object to the club's Abu Dhabi-based owners. Meeting both Dortmund's asking price and Bellingham's wage demands would not be an issue.

But City's wealth is not without its downside, certainly from a player's perspective. The reigning Premier League champions can afford to make mistakes in the transfer market. If an expensive signing doesn't work out, they can just make another one.

They are in the rather enviable position of being able to pay £42m ($53m) for a promising young English midfielder and leave him on the bench for almost the entire season. Now, people may argue with some justification that Bellingham is a far better player than Kalvin Phillips – and a very different one too – but the former Leeds United star's struggles at the Etihad this season underline just how difficult it is to break into this City side.

Pep will obviously have a plan for Bellingham, but he doesn't exactly look like a perfect fit from a tactical perspective. City don't have another player like the 19-year-old, which is good in one way, but potentially problematic in another.

Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva could both leave this summer, but Bellingham hardly represents a like-for-like replacement for either player.

He is far more direct and actually more akin to Kevin De Bruyne but, again, it's difficult to see Bellingham playing instead of the Belgian or even with him, unless he makes some modifications to his game. Just look at how the ridiculously talented Phil Foden is in and out of the City starting line-up this season.

Bellingham would obviously learn a lot playing under Guardiola, and alongside some of the most intelligent footballers in the game today, but, at his age, he needs to play, and he needs to grow. It's not as if Phillips is doing either right now…

AdvertisementGetty ImagesReal Madrid

As it stands, Madrid don't appear to have quite enough money in the bank to bring Bellingham to Santiago Bernabeu this summer, not that a lack of cash has ever stopped them before. Real usually find a way to get what they want.

A player's desire to move to Madrid often helps too. It remains the dream destination for most footballers, representing the most successful side in the history of the European Cup is still considered by many to be the pinnacle of their profession. Bellingham would be no different in that regard.

Again, though, there are some red flags. Madrid have signed two young midfielders of enormous potential during the last summer two transfer windows, in Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

The former was once again on the bench against Chelsea on Wednesday night, while the latter played at left-back.

Both were obviously bought with the future in mind. Despite some compelling evidence to the contrary, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos cannot continue forever.

But, again, Bellingham might have to spend more time on the bench than he'd like if he were to join Madrid at this particular moment in time.

After all, another midfielder really isn't really Real's priority right now, which is telling in itself.

GettyManchester United

In recently urging Bellingham to stay at Dortmund, club legend Stefan Effenberg pointed out in his column for that there are "no guarantees elsewhere – [Jadon] Sancho is the best example of this."

It was a valid point. Sancho appeared perfectly primed to become a superstar at Manchester United in 2021 after three stellar seasons at Signal Iduna Park.

Sadly, the winger has endured a tough time at Old Trafford, with the mental strain of playing in one of the most pressurised environments in world football having taken a heavy toll on Sancho, who is only now starting to look like something resembling his old self.

Sancho certainly wasn't helped by the constant turmoil at United, and while things have improved around the first team following the appointment of the excellent Erik ten Hag as coach, the ongoing unrest at boardroom level is hugely concerning.

Indeed, it was hoped that the Glazer family, who are reviled by many supporters, would sell the club before the end of the season, but that process could now drag on into the summer, meaning less time for the new owners to prepare for next season.

For that reason alone, United appear unlikely to sign Bellingham. They're not presently in a position to commit to such a massive deal, while Bellingham would be well advised to steer clear while the ownership issue at Old Trafford remains unresolved.

Getty ImagesChelsea

If United's interest should be treated with caution, any offer from Chelsea must be immediately dismissed. The new owners at Stamford Bridge are making the previous administration look like models of restraint, having already sacked two managers since taking charge last summer and spent more than £500m ($625m) on players.

Seriously, it's The Muppet Show, an ever-expanding cast of comical characters that appear to exist only for our amusement.

It obviously makes no sense for Chelsea to bid for Bellingham, given they're already in danger of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations because of their historic spending spree, but that doesn't mean they won't.

Todd Boehly & Co. clearly want to sign as many talented young players as possible. However, it would be hugely surprising if Bellingham had any interest in joining a club operating in a total state of flux.

They won't be playing in the Champions League next season, while it's not yet known who their next manager will be – or whether he'll be sacked six games into the new campaign.

Bellingham must avoid Chelsea at all costs.

Mbappe CONFIRMED as new France captain

UAE more worried by storm than WI

Jason Holder refused to worry about the weather in Napier, but UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir did not want his team’s journey home disrupted

Firdose Moonda in Napier14-Mar-2015The Southern Ocean sparkles a shade of aquamarine, a gentler colour than the sapphire of the Mediterranean or the Indian. Its waves lap against the shoreline, so softly that they seem to want to mitigate against the harsh texture of the black pebble beach. The surface does not look the most comfortable place to sunbathe but with the sun’s golden rays creating a mirage, it’s magical in its own way. So much so, that if you strolled down Napier’s Marine Parade on Saturday morning, you would not believe there was a storm on the way.But 3,000 kilometres north, Cyclone Pam has lashed the island of Vanuatu where it is being called the worst weather system in 30 years. It is heading towards New Zealand’s north-east and is expected to make landfall late Sunday night but the precursor to it – rain and wind – could arrive before that and it may find its way to McLean Park. Currently the forecast is for drizzle and heavier rain later; a no-result will send West Indies crashing out of the World Cup.Under the circumstances, Jason Holder could be looking anxiously to the heavens – which remained cloudless on Saturday afternoon – and hoping, but the young captain has chosen to stare straight ahead in his approach to the crunch game. “It’s not on my mind at all. We can’t play the weather,” he said. “If it comes, it comes.”Instead, it is the UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir who is monitoring the weather updates, albeit for a slightly different reason. “I am worried about the cyclone. We’ve got a flight back on Monday. It has been a very long hectic tour, although we have enjoyed it, and we need to go back safely,” Mohammad Tauqir said.Irrespective of the result, UAE will leave New Zealand on Monday and head back to the Emirates by mid-week but, unlike some of the other sides, their players will not able to take break after six weeks on the road. “Our employers are waiting for us,” Tauqir said. His self-titled “amateur” side all have day jobs – those who are not Emirati citizens, which is most of the squad, would not be able to stay in the country if they did not – and this tournament was more about the experience than the outcome. On that front, they have enjoyed every bit of it.”We started well in the games against Zimbabwe and Ireland and then we had one bad game against India. Even against Pakistan and South Africa, it was a decent performance from our side. It has been long but we got a few good breaks between games,” Tauqir said. “We would like to end this tournament on a winning note.”With UAE talking like a side with one foot on the plane, West Indies may be more confident of their chances of doing what they need to do to advance, even though they have left it late and irrespective of the weather.”Any team would have loved to qualified by now and we’ve been up and down but I have confidence in the guys to produce what is needed,” Holder said. “I can’t say we’ve been horrible. What is important is that we forget the past. The better we do, the better our chances later in the quarter finals as well.”The World Cup has already seen one weather system, tropical cyclone Marcia, which passed through Brisbane and washed out the match between Australia and Bangladesh but has not had any other significant weather interruptions.

Moeen joins England for second Test

England have added offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali to their squad ahead of the second Test in Grenada, which starts on April 21.

George Dobell at North Sound15-Apr-2015England have added offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali to their squad ahead of the second Test in Grenada, which starts on April 21.Moeen was not named in the original squad after he sustained a side strain during the World Cup, but he played in Worcestershire’s first Championship match of the season and reported no reaction after bowling. He was then assessed by the ECB medical team and cleared to meet up with the rest of the squad in Grenada ahead of the second Test.Having bowled only 11 overs against Yorkshire, England are keen to ensure Moeen is fit to bowl the heavy allocation of overs that could be required of him in a Test. They will therefore assess him further before making a decision whether to send anyone else in the party home. But it remains likely that Adil Rashid will return to England before the end of the tour. While the England management retain high hopes that Rashid, the 27-year-old legspinner, could go on to play an important job for the team in the future, he produced a modest performance in the warm-up game in St Kitts and missed out on the spinner’s spot in the first Test team to James Tredwell. With no games between Tests, there is little further opportunity for him to impress.Rashid is one of six Yorkshire players in the squad and one of four not picked for the XI in this game. While that situation has irked some at Yorkshire – the club president, Dickie Bird, chided the England management over the situation – Peter Moores and co. feel they need the reserves in case any of the players struggle to get through three Tests in such a short period of time. There are just three days between the first two Tests. While those players not required in the final Test, in Barbados, could be released once the game starts – with the exception of a substitute fielder or two – Yorkshire do not have a Championship match that week. But it could be that any players returning early to England will be considered for the ODI in Ireland on May 8. None of the players involved in the Barbados Test will be available for that game – they are only scheduled to return to the UK at 6am on May 7 – so England are expected to field a new-look side, almost certainly captained by James Taylor and likely to include Kent’s Sam Billings.Moeen established himself as England’s first-choice spinner during the Test series against India when he claimed 19 wickets; only one behind Ray Illingworth’s record for an England spinner in a home series against India. Moeen also made a Test century against Sri Lanka and will strengthen England’s batting. But he may yet find it tricky to displace Tredwell, who bowled beautifully in the first innings in Antigua and finished with Test-best figures of 4 for 47.

NZ take series with 120-run win

A 117-run third-wicket stand between Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor was the centrepiece of New Zealand’s imposing 315 for 8, which founded a 120-run victory against an ailing Sri Lanka

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando24-Jan-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRoss Taylor’s 96 was his first half-century of the series•Getty ImagesA 117-run third-wicket stand between Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor was the centrepiece of New Zealand’s imposing 315 for 8, which founded a 120-run victory against an ailing Sri Lanka. Williamson and Taylor hit 97 and 96 respectively, on a track not offering much beyond the first 20 overs, before Corey Anderson and Grant Elliott provided late-order acceleration to transform the total from dominant to daunting. Anderson also claimed 4 for 52 with the ball, as the hosts sewed up the series. They lead 4-1 with one match to play.Sri Lanka arrived in New Zealand with high hopes for their southern-hemisphere season, but with one win out of seven matches in all, their World Cup plans have veered towards disarray. Once more, a vital catch was dropped. A straightforward chance from Williamson was spurned, and the batsman went on to make 70 more runs. Again the bowling failed to penetrate beyond the early overs, as the hosts’ top order worked themselves into form. And for the fourth time in the series, Sri Lanka’s batsmen collapsed around a good innings from one of the senior three batsmen. It was Kumar Sangakkara’s turn to wage a lone battle this time. He hit 81 from 66, as the team slipped to 195 all out in the 41st over.In the first innings, Williamson played and missed while the ball was still new enough to move in the air and off the seam, but quickly established a tempo while Martin Guptill struggled at the other end. A back-foot punch off Suranga Lakmal brought him his first boundary, before an on-drive and a leg glance off Dhammika Prasad brought two more, a few overs later. When Rangana Herath’s spin arrived, Williamson used his feet adeptly, often trekking out of his ground to work balls into gaps. Herath should have had him for 27 in the 15th over, but Sri Lanka’s trend of shelling vital catches continued. Dilshan got his hands to lofted cover-drive, but ended up parrying it over his head, having misjudged the pace at which the ball was coming to him.Taylor was watchful early in his innings, as he sought to shake off a run of poor form. But he appeared to regain fluency after he hit Thisara Perera for four through the covers in the 18th over, and he and Williamson settled into a pattern of risk-free accumulation. They traveled at around four runs an over until Williamson raised the rate with two beautifully timed sixes over wide long on in the 24th and 26th overs, completing his half-century, off 60 balls, in between. The pair continued smoothly as Lahiru Thirimanne got overs out of his less capable bowlers, partly to make up for those the still-injured Angelo Mathews would ordinarily contribute, but also because Lakmal had left the field with a groin strain, and could bowl no more than seven overs. Williamson was well on track to hitting his second hundred in three innings when he was run out, effectively by Taylor who did not respond to Williamson’s call for a second. Williamson departed for 97 from 95 balls, despondent though he had put New Zealand on course for a second consecutive score of over 300.Taylor completed his first fifty of the series in the same over Williamson fell, and quickly meted out punishment during the batting Powerplay, cracking Prasad square on the off side twice in the 37th over. A promoted Anderson began his charge too, walloping three fours himself in a Perera over that disappeared for 19, but just as he was getting his big hits humming, Herath had him caught at the cow corner fence.Taylor would depart in sight of his 12th ODI ton not long after, trapped plumb in front by a yorker-length Dilshan ball. But though wickets tumbled towards the end of the innings, Grant Elliott’s big strikes ensured that the foundation New Zealand had constructed at 40 overs – when they had 229 for 3 – would result in another commanding score. That New Zealand did not achieve a total as great as their 360 on Friday, despite having been 175 for 2 after 34 overs, was thanks in part to Herath’s control and Dhammika Prasad’s intensity. The pair were brought into the side for this match in place of Nuwan Kulasekara and Sachithra Senanayake.Sri Lanka’s response began with some promise, as the openers progressed to 56 without loss in the 13th over, before a wild Dilshan swipe sent a nick through to the keeper, off Anderson. Thirimanne was strangled down the leg side next over for 29, as the team’s efforts to find a decent opening partner for Dilshan had him batting at the top of the innings again.Mahela Jayawardene was visibly out of touch, and was almost out twice to Daniel Vettori, who was playing a record 280th ODI for New Zealand. Though it was the spinner that troubled him, Jayawardene would be out to Anderson, scooping him gently to mid on in an attempt to correct his languishing scoring rate.Kyle Mills, Trent Boult and Vettori all contributed mean spells of bowling, sending the asking rate ever higher, and it was that pressure that saw Dimuth Karunaratne hole out for 26, and saw both Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis cheaply run out. Sri Lanka were always going to struggle after a big top-order partnership eluded them, but Sangakkara’s dismissal in the 38th over effectively sealed the loss. He was out trying to lift his tour nemesis Boult over the inner ring. A third run-out and another high catch in the circle finished the match off.

Chelsea, Inter and the teams Messi has never scored against

Of all the teams the Barcelona forward has faced, he has failed to hit the net against just 12, including Tuesday's Champions League opponents

A career spent as one of the world's most prolific goalscorers and perennially at the top of the game, Lionel Messi has upset a huge number of teams as a star for Barcelona.

The Argentine's exploits have led the Catalan side to global success and helped keep them within the top echelons of European football.

So consistent has Messi been that it is easier to name the teams he has failed to score against in his senior career since he emerged in Barca's senior side as a 17-year-old in October 2004.

Of all the teams Messi has faced in the near 13 and a half years since his first appearance for the Blaugrana, he has failed to hit the net against just 12.

He will get the chance to knock one of those teams off the list on Tuesday when his side visit Chelsea in the Champions League. Goal runs through the teams the Camp Nou icon has never scored against.

Getty12Gramenet

Messi's third official appearance and first start for Barcelona was also his first defeat with the senior side, as Frank Rijkaard's men lost to Gramenet in the Copa del Rey.

Despite the presence of Messi, Henrik Larsson and Andres Iniesta in the starting XI, the Blaugrana could not find a way through against the third-tier team and conceded the decisive goal in extra-time.

It is the only time Messi has come up against his side's Catalan neighbours.

AdvertisementGetty11Udinese

With just one goal to his name for the Camp Nou outfit, Messi was still far off the level that carried him to five Ballons d'Or when he lined up against Udinese in September 2005.

Back then, he was just a promising youngster lucky enough to be playing in attack alongside Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o.

It was the Brazilian who showed he was still the grandmaster in the Champions League encounter, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 win.

Messi, meanwhile, was withdrawn in the 70th minute and although he scored in his next Champions League appearance, he was left out of the next two group games, one of which was the return clash with Udinese.

Getty10Cadiz

In December 2005, Messi missed another rare chance to add another name to his long list of victims in a game against Cadiz.

The Argentine got an assist as Barca won 3-1, setting up Samuel Eto'o early in the second half.

Messi was injured when the two sides met later in the season in a much tighter affair but, luckily, Ronaldinho was on hand to score the winning goal as Barca went on to win the league.

He has not faced them since.

The 2007-08 season may have been a disappointment for Barcelona, as they finished third in La Liga, an incredible 18 points behind champions Real Madrid.

However, it ended with a lot of fun, as they recovered from the concession of an early goal to storm to a 5-1 lead over Real Murcia in the final game of the season.

Messi again got two assists, but it was Giovani dos Santos who took the plaudits for his hat-trick. While Barca have faced Murcia several times since, Messi has not played in any of those games.

We are not afraid of any team – Sana Mir

The Pakistan Women’s team have a chance of making it to their first-ever semi-final in the Women’s World T20 and captain Sana Mir is unafraid of the challenge of playing a formidable England side on Sunday

Shashank Kishore in Delhi24-Mar-20161:42

‘I can’t ask for more from the girls’ – Sana Mir

Sana Mir received a thunderous applause as she walked in to the post-match press conference after her side beat Bangladesh Women in Delhi. She first allowed Sidra Ameen, who crafted a match-winning unbeaten 53, to soak in the applause and take her seat, before she followed. The big grin on Mir’s face told you a story of a captain, who in her last assignment at the helm, was close to achieving an important milestone in Pakistan women’s cricket history. The nine-wicket win over Bangladesh keeps Pakistan Women in contention for a place in the semi-finals of the World T20.Ameen, however, seemed more overawed facing questions, than she did while batting at the crease, especially unfurling those fierce cut shots to raze down a potentially tricky target of 114. “My captain has backed me, she showed faith in me,” she said, before breaking into a sheepish smile. “Momentum” and “confidence” were the buzzwords, her excitement clearly knowing no bounds, after her first half-century in international cricket.Until the 2012 Women’s World T20, Pakistan hadn’t won a single match in the tournament. Four years later, there scales have turned, and how. With wins over India and Bangladesh, their confidence and net run-rate, too, has taken received a massive fillip. Previous Pakistan teams would have looked at an upcoming clash against England Women as another step towards improving against a top side, but not this team.”We are not afraid of any team,” Mir declared authoritatively. “We have shown how much we have improved as a side. Cricket is played out on the field and not on paper. So we don’t believe they are favourites. The way we have played as a team in this tournament, I would say we have an equal chance. A lot of people would have written us off, but it doesn’t matter who we are playing. That is the positive attitude we will take into the next game.”Mir wasn’t being over-confident. The brutal honesty has stemmed from the performance of her bowling group that has adapted itself superbly. Anam Amin, the left-arm spinner may have well won her third successive Player-of-the-Match award for a haul of 2 for 12, had it not been for the ease with which Ameen began a potentially tricky chase on a pitch that slowed down as the evening progressed.”Our bowling has been outstanding throughout the tournament, credit to Anam Amin and Asmavia Iqbal,” Mir said. “To restrict West Indies to a little over 100 and India to below that was a special effort. That has injected tremendous confidence. Also, our openers didn’t start well in the first game, but there has been remarkable improvement in the next two games. The momentum is with us going into the game against England. We could have had a better result in one game (they lost to West Indies by four runs), but can’t ask for more from the girls.”Mir did not miss another opportunity to acknowledge the support of a festive Holi crowd. The official attendance was pegged at 1026. “” [Pakistan will win] chants were ringing loud as their flag fluttered. “It is wonderful to be in a country where people are chanting for you, it’s welcoming,” Mir said. We are enjoying the support. Hopefully we can continue to impress them with the way we play.”And what about the reception from back home? “Oh, the kind of support we have got from back home this time, I don’t think we’ve ever got that,” she smiled. “The kind of messages we have received from back home has been extremely encouraging. We just want to continue this going forward. The girls are enjoying this. But our prayers are with the men’s team as well. I hope they also give the fans reasons to smile.”

Nike unveiled the all-new Paris Saint-Germain 2023-24 home kit on May 31. The jersey pays tribute to a classic Parisian design and embodies the unique spirit of the French capital.

The new PSG 2023-24 home kit reinterprets a shirt worn by Parisian players in the early 2000s, capturing the essence of Paris Saint-Germain through a striking design. The red and white stripes, symbolic of the club, gradually blend into a dynamic blue, reminiscent of the lights blending into the Parisian skyline.

The tricolour flag is also featured, underscoring the pride of Paris Saint-Germain as the most successful club in France, shining the hexagonal colours beyond the capital and resonating worldwide with passion.

Paris Saint-Germain and Nike launched the new away kit for the 2023-2024 season at Paris Saint-Germain’s inaugural WE RUN PARIS, which took place on July 2. On the starting line, the new Parisian shirt was proudly worn by famous names from the worlds of running and football, such as Caster Semenya, Ladji Doucouré and Zoumana Camara.

The bold white shirt echoes the club’s traditional colours, for a unique strip that will be worn when the team plays away from home. The traditional red and blue Parisian colours blend together in a prism effect on the colourful band across the chest, creating a sharp contrast with the bright white of the rest of the strip.

The emblematic Paris Saint-Germain badge features the club’s colours as well as the French capital’s timeless symbols: the Eiffel Tower and the lily flower.

As with the away strip, there is not too much known about the finer points of the 2023-24 third kit Paris Saint-Germain will sport this coming season, though if their anticipated change number sticks to its planned design, it will need a face-lift.

Early leaks and speculation suggest PSG’s third option could be inspired by one of the great Nike partnerships of all, the Air Jordan range, with a design touch inspired by the NBA legend.

Hues of grey, black and stone have all been floated as likely colour combinations, but as it stands, there is no concrete info on both the design and collar structure for this option.

As with plenty of other third-choice kits for next season, not much is known about an exact release date, but you can expect it to match the price of their other strips, retailing at an anticipated £75.00 through Nike.

When it comes to warm-up gear for Paris Saint-Germain in 2023-24, it appears the club may sport two separate numbers over next season, both offering sharp contrast to each other in refined fashion.

Both appear to sport identical designs, with a singular-colour main body accented by two-tone underarm shading, neckline and sleeves, but it is in the palate where they differ, albeit in classic PSG colour-scheme fashion.

A darker option is set to marry navy with maroon and steel-blue trim, while a lighter effort brings traditional white with navy and maroon accents.

There is no official release date set for the pre-match jersey, but with stock suggested to be close to the shelves, we can expect to see a summer 2023 launch.
