Robin Peterson looks for his place

In a team heavily dependent on quick bowlers, which plays regularly in seam-friendly conditions, Robin Peterson hasn’t had much of the limelight

In a team heavily dependent on pace, Robin Peterson has had a marginal role to play so far in Tests•Associated Press

Robin Peterson was feeling restless. While most of Test team-mates took a break after their victory over Pakistan at the Wanderers, he and his namesake Alviro, chose to play for their franchises in the final round of the first-class competition. For Alviro, it may have been important to contribute in what was set up as a championship decider for a team desperate for silverware (which they did not win) but for Robin it was more a case of itchy feet. “I wanted to play for the Cobras,” he said. “It’s no fun sometimes being the spinner in South Africa and you go through periods of play where you don’t even bowl.”In a team where winning has been the theme of the summer and the culture is as strong as it has ever been, it would seem unusual that the enjoyment isn’t evenly spread. But Peterson can be forgiven. Although he has leapfrogged Imran Tahir as the first-choice spinner for the Test team, like Tahir, his opportunities to contribute have been minimal.Since his six wickets against Australia in Perth, Peterson has spent two innings as a spectator – against New Zealand in the New Year’s Test and against Pakistan in Johannesburg. Only Jacques Kallis, whose workloads are being managed, bowled fewer overs than Peterson in Cape Town against New Zealand and Peterson bowled the least number of deliveries of all the bowlers in Johannesburg. On surfaces that have something for the quicks and with a pace attack as potent as the current South African one, Peterson understands that he is “surplus to requirements,” and, for the most part, accepts it. “It can be frustrating but you have to realise you are part of a team. The team comes first.”It’s magnificent to watch Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Jacques perform the way they do with the ball. I know my time will come so I just have to hang in there and be patient and keep working hard. It’s the best bowling attack I’ve ever played with and it’s something special to be part of. I have a front row seat to awesome performances.”To the average cricket fan, that would sound ideal. But Peterson is not a fan, he is a paid professional and he is starting to realise how trying that can be when the chosen vocation in South Africa is spin. Having flirted with the idea of a wicket-taking spinner in Tahir, South Africa’s Test strategy has resorted back to a holding tweaker in the Paul Harris mould.Peterson is learning how to adjust to that. “In South Africa, you need to realise that there is a certain role you’ve got to perform, whether it’s to keep it tight and give the seamers a bit of a break if there’s no spin or if there is a bit on offer, to try make a breakthrough when the seamers can’t. I’d love to play on turning wickets every weekend, but that’s not the case in South Africa and you’ve got to adapt.”Newlands is the most spinner-friendly surface Peterson will come across but it is not the subcontinent. In the last 14 months, it has been the scene of two of the three first innings scores of under 50 in the country. The last spinner to prosper there was Harbhajan Singh who took 7 for 120 in January 2011 but in recent times, it has had more for Philander than Peterson. He is not expecting that to change too much. “It would seem to be that the seamers do a lot of the damage but in saying that it’s probably the only surface that we are going to play against Pakistan on where a spinner could come into his own so hopefully I get an opportunity. I think there will be a little bit on offer if the weather stays good.”South Africa also want to be careful not to prepare a pitch that will deteriorate too much because of the threat of Saeed Ajmal. “It would be foolish to do that,” Peterson said. “He was their No. 1 Test bowler last year and you don’t want to give him something that assists him.”That probably means that Peterson won’t get any help from the pitch either so he may have to look for other ways to get in the game. His batting is thought to be another reason he trumps Tahir in selection terms but, like his bowling, that too has waned since Perth. There he scored 31 runs but since then has only managed 5, 8 and a duck.”I was disappointed with the way I got out in Johannesburg,” he said, remembering leaving a straight one from Mohammed Hafeez. “If the opportunity comes I’m going to go out there and show I’m a lot better than that.”He hopes to do the same with ball in hand which is why he opted for an extra match instead of a week off. However, Peterson bowled only 15 overs against the Knights. He took 2 for 33 in a first-innings workout of 13 overs and bowled just two in the second innings while the seamers did the bulk of the work. Business as usual then for Peterson.

New Zealand’s World Twenty20 squad have been hit by some serious bouts of gastro, with the fast bowler Tim Southee and the batsman Rob Nicol too ill to travel with the team from Colombo to Kandy ahead of their opening match against Bangladesh, New Zealand Cricket has confirmed.Southee felt unwell on Monday morning, and was unable to take part in New Zealand’s warm-up loss to South Africa. Nicol was ill overnight and it was decided that neither he nor Southee should accompany the team on the journey to Kandy.Instead, both have remained in Colombo under the observation of the New Zealand team doctor. Southee has been taken to hospital to be treated for signs of dehydration.”Southee reported to medical staff that he felt unwell yesterday morning,” New Zealand cricket said in a statement. “He was not able to attend the warm-up match against South Africa and subsequently displayed symptoms associated with gastro-enteritis.”Nicol was sick over-night and could not travel comfortably this morning so also remain in Kandy under observation of the team doctor. Because Southee showed signs of dehydration it has been decided that he will receive re-hydration treatment at the local hospital.”If sufficient improvements are made today the pair will travel to Kandy this afternoon.””We’re pretty diligent in how we go about things but we can’t contain everything,” New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said. “I think they’ll be up either tonight or first thing in the morning, it’s just precautionary.”The spin bowler Daniel Vettori, meanwhile, has also suffered from stomach trouble but has recovered sufficiently to travel with the rest of the squad. “Dan’s still pretty low in terms of energy levels but getting back up,” Hesson added.Their match against Bangladesh will take place on Friday.

Ganguly match just another game for Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, has sought to downplay the huge hype that surrounds their Saturday game against Pune Warriors India

Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, has sought to downplay the huge hype that surrounds their Saturday game against Pune Warriors India. This is the first time Sourav Ganguly, now Warriors’ captain, will be part of the opposition in front of the passionate Kolkata fans. Eden Gardens is sold out, black marketers are having a field day, and given Ganguly’s popularity in Kolkata, the home side could possibly be in for an “away game”.”Sourav is an individual,” Gambhir said. “We are playing against Pune Warriors, and not against Sourav Ganguly.” Gambhir then went on to say he couldn’t control how the crowd behaved, except for trying his best to win the game.”Whoever Kolkata wants to support they are free to support. I have always maintained KKR belongs to Kolkata. There is no other team that belongs to Kolkata. We always play for the pride of Kolkata. We will always do that, whether we get the support or not. We go out there to make people happy, and bring joy to them. Our job will be the same whether we would be the away or home team tomorrow. We will keep playing for Kolkata be it tomorrow or near future.”However much Gambhir might want to downplay the presence of Ganguly, it is impossible to run away from. They have been talking about this game in Kolkata ever since the schedule was finalised. An emotional back-story is how Knight Riders had first taken away Ganguly’s captaincy, and later let him go. The Kolkata fans are known to be an emotional lot, which makes divided loyalties a distinct possibility. Knight Riders’ bowling coach, Wasim Akram, is reported to have even compared this to an India-Pakistan match. When asked about that, Gambhir didn’t seem impressed.”That’s his perspective of tomorrow’s game,” he said. “For me, it’s another game of cricket. There is nothing so-called India vs Pakistan. We are playing against Pune Warriors, and there is no such rivalry as Pakistan. India and Pakistan is a completely different ball game. It’s just the media that is creating the hype. It’s Wasim’s way of looking at the game tomorrow. For me, it’s just another game of cricket.”Nor did Gambhir seem interested in any mind games. Asked if he drew any comfort from Ganguly’s struggles with the bat and their coinciding with Warriors’ downward spiral, Gambhir went back to his mantra of not speaking about individuals. “We are not playing against individuals. We are playing against a team. If individuals are struggling that does not make them a lesser force. Any one of them can fire with the ball or bat, and can win the game. If one or two are struggling, it’s not going to make any difference.”Gambhir stayed away from any captaincy debate as well. “Captains are only as good as their team,” he said. “Captain does not win games. It’s just the planning that they do. It’s the 11 men on the field that contribute. Captain can only be successful if you have the people to execute those plans. It can be a failure as well if you don’t have the people to execute them.”However, given the mad rush for tickets, the huge crowds to watch training sessions, the history between Ganguly and Kolkata, and Ganguly and Knight Riders, Gambhir did seem to be in a small minority of people who believed this was just another game.

Prior excited by Bairstow presence

Matt Prior said he was not worried about fellow wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow’s inclusion in the England squad to face West Indies

Alan Gardner15-May-2012

Matt Prior is likely to return to No. 7 in the England order if Jonny Bairstow makes his expected debut at Lord’s•Getty Images

Matt Prior is currently regarded as one of the finest wicketkeeper-batsmen in Test cricket, so you wouldn’t expect him to be ruffled by the prospect of a little competition. With England set to give a debut to Jonny Bairstow in the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s, Prior said he is actually enjoying the presence of a fellow gloveman in the dressing room – though if his 22-year-old team-mate enjoys a similar Test debut to the one Prior made five years ago, he may scratch his beard and mull the question a little more deeply next time he’s asked.Prior made an unbeaten 126 in his first Test in 2007, against the same opponents on the same ground, and despite a brief period when he lost the gloves to Tim Ambrose at the start of 2008 has carved an unassailable niche for himself as England’s wicketkeeper in the long format. Bairstow, who keeps wicket for Yorkshire and was behind the stumps for the Lions’ ten-wicket win over the West Indians last week, is expected to play as a specialist batsman, coming in at No.6, but Prior is not worried about welcoming a man who could become a rival for his spot into the side. At least not yet, anyway.”If he smashes a double hundred and I get nought he’ll probably become a rival pretty quickly,” Prior said, with a laugh. “He’s a team-mate, obviously he’s a wicketkeeper as well, but there are a number of wicketkeepers around the country and there always has been. Whether they’re in the team or playing county cricket I know that I have to perform well to keep my place.”It’s always exciting when a player like Jonny comes through into the squad, he’s settled in very well. It’s nice to form a relationship with another keeper because ultimately he’s the only other bloke in the room that knows what it’s like to be a keeper. It’s hugely exciting for Jonny this week and if he does get selected to make his debut it will be a great feeling I’m sure.”Prior, who has made three of his six Test tons at Lord’s, including two in his last two Test matches at the ground, is the sort of player who would not begrudge Bairstow success, even if his place were less secure. He may have received a ticking off from the ICC for breaking a window in the pavilion and discombobulating a few MCC members during the Sri Lanka Test last year but it is team achievement, rather than individual accolades, that gets Prior worked up, a trait that is common to Andy Flower’s hard-working England side.”I’ve never been a big stat watcher. I’ve always tried to play the role that’s needed to win the game, or save the game, or whatever it may be, so that’s for me more important than the individual score,” Prior said. “I’ve always played like that and I think I would struggle to play any differently. I find it more exciting to play for the team and to win a Test match.”I believe it is one of our strengths. The team goal and team performance comes ahead of any one person’s own goals and ego and I think it’s vital in any successful team to have that.”Similarly, he will happily resume his place at No. 7 in the order, having been promoted to No. 6 on England’s tour of Sri Lanka, as they supplemented their four-man attack with Samit Patel as the spin-bowling allrounder. In English conditions, on green pitches and against green opponents, a return to four bowlers and six batsmen is almost certain.”I really don’t mind. It doesn’t make any difference, really, batting six or seven, that one spot,” Prior said. “Batting at six you potentially have more opportunity to get a bigger score but then batting a seven has its challenges as well and that’s something I enjoy doing. I genuinely believe the most important thing is getting the balance of the team right to win the Test match and if I bat at six or seven, I’m easy with either one.”While West Indies are depleted by the absence of key players at IPL, Prior was unequivocal about what his priorities are. “Personally for me no, because Test cricket is my life, all my goals are based around Test cricket at this moment in time,” he said, when asked whether he would put an IPL contract above playing for England. “But it’s an individual choice and it’s up to those people to make their decisions. For me, I love playing Test cricket and it’s something I want to do for a few more years to come.”It is perhaps easier to be enthusiastic when you are ranked No. 1 in the format, as England are. West Indies are currently rated the world’s No. 7 Test side, a position they have not been higher than since the summer of 2000, when England beat them in a Test series for the first time in 31 years. But while Prior was not taking victory for granted, he denied that England needed to reassert their credentials after losing four Tests out of five over the winter and with their closest challengers for the No. 1 spot, South Africa, arriving later in the summer.”I don’t think we need to prove anything, as such, I think we’ve played pretty good cricket over a number of years now so I don’t know about that. But certainly we want to get off to a good start this summer, after a few little glitches in the winter I know that everyone’s very keen and pumped up to perform well from the off. There are two big series coming up, we want to play well, we want to win those series.”
