Levy claim emerges behind-scenes at Spurs

A very intriguing claim has emerged behind the scenes at Tottenham Hotspur this week…

What’s the word?

According to reliable football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, chairman Daniel Levy has been delivered some home truths by manager Antonio Conte in recent weeks.

“Spurs maybe just took for granted a little bit of what they had in Poch [Mauricio Pochettino], rather than seeing that everything needed to continuously improve around him,” he revealed to his YouTube channel.

“And hopefully, this is what Conte’s kind of ramming down everyone’s throats, and it might not be the worst thing for Tottenham and a bit of a wake-up call.

“Because like I say, I think Daniel Levy, from my understanding from people within the club, has been hearing some things that maybe he’s just not used to hearing – and Conte’s a man you listen to, hopefully.”

Times changing?

This relationship could either be a recipe for disaster, with the Telegraph’s Matt Law recently describing it as a ‘ticking timebomb’, or a huge success, given the Italian’s trophy record.

That still very much remains to be seen as Conte will be hoping for substantial financial backing during the summer and even then, it may take another window or two to fully transform the playing squad into the sort of team he wants.

Some early measures have been taken, which saw the likes of club-record flop Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso depart on loan, both of whom have options to buy at their new clubs, whilst they did sign two new players, albeit both familiar from sporting director Fabio Paratici’s former club Juventus.

It’s thought that Conte asked for four new additions. Well, he only got half that in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur – the latter being perhaps the only one he ‘truly’ needed.

There are still gaps to plug at right wing-back, left centre-back and up front.

In the past, Conte has shown that he isn’t afraid to walk away from a project if things don’t go his way. He left Inter Milan in the summer after clinching the Serie A title over differences with the board and there were some fears he may do the same at Spurs this winter, according to reports.

But ultimately, Spurs have long needed a figure like this – someone who is going to tell it like it is – so that should provide supporters with plenty of encouragement. Whether Levy decides to listen and act is another story but time will soon tell if Conte is going to be a success in N17.

Malcolm Speed, the former ICC chief executive, has slammed the boards that have blocked John Howard’s nomination as the next ICC vice-president. During the ICC annual meeting in Singapore it was confirmed that Howard didn’t have enough support, while Australia and New Zealand have been asked to nominate another candidateSpeed, who was CEO from 2001 until 2008, was scathing in his assessment of what had taken place to undermine Howard’s nomination, which itself was the subject of a compromise between Australia and New Zealand. He said those who didn’t want Howard in the role are politically motivated.”Howard has been rejected because his appointment would provide ICC with strong leadership that would thwart the ambitions of several current administrators to downgrade and devalue the role of the ICC,” Speed wrote in the .”Howard would have stood in their path. The role requires strength of character – a leader, diplomat, statesman and politician. The ICC board is as political as any political party. The countries that voted him down want a compliant figurehead who will do their bidding.”Speed added that Australia and New Zealand have previously accepted nominations despite reservations. He said that they should decline to make another candidate available and instead pass the role onto Pakistan and Bangladesh, who are next in line on the rotation system, then refuse to vote themselves.”In the meantime, they should be banging the table and making their displeasure widely known,” wrote Speed.Speed also questioned whether ICC president-elect Sharad Pawar would have time for cricket in the midst of his political career. “Sharad Pawar, is the Minister for Agriculture in the Indian government – a serious full-time job, feeding 1.2 billion people. He is a good and fair man but he will be working part-time as ICC president and, take it from me, he knows little about cricket administration.”I was present at several ICC board meetings he attended. ICC meetings generally last two days. Pawar attended for one hour and was then replaced by one of the Board of Control for Cricket in India apparatchiks. They were concerned that he was too busy and would be too reasonable,” wrote Speed.Cricket Australia’s chairman Jack Clarke and his New Zealand Cricket counterpart Alan Isaac said in a joint statement they were “deeply disappointed” after supplying “the best possible candidate”. “We jointly nominated Mr Howard as he possesses significant leadership and administrative skills,” they said. “We believe cricket needs to continue to seek excellence and dispassionate independence in the game’s global governance.”We were delighted that the most senior world figure ever considered for this role agreed to accept the nomination. We remain convinced it is reasonable for his nomination to be supported by the ICC executive board and we are deeply disappointed by the position taken.”

Collingwood confident of resurgent England

There will be no rousing speech or chest-thumping patriotism from Paul Collingwood when England take the field for their semi-final against Sri Lanka because he doesn’t think his team needs it

There will be no rousing speech or chest-thumping patriotism from Paul Collingwood when England take the field for their semi-final against Sri Lanka because he doesn’t think his team needs it. The prospect of securing a place in their first major final since 2004 is motivation enough.”The guys are ready; they are excited,” he said. “If there was a feeling around the camp that the guys are nervous or anything like that then maybe something would have to be said. But the guys are so focused in the jobs they’ve got to do, roles they’ve got to play. We’ll have a team meeting tonight, but let me tell you I’m not going to come out with any rip-roaring speech.”England have been the surprise package at this tournament (Australia were always going to get the hang of Twenty20 eventually) and there has been a supreme confidence about their play since a nerve-wracking evening in Guyana when they feared a short run chase would give Ireland a chance of piping them. That would have been a cruel exit and since then they have shown how far they have developed as a Twenty20 unit. From the power-packed top order led by the selfless styles of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter to the in-form middle order of Kevin Pietersen (who is due back in the Carribbean on Wednesday afternoon after being at the birth of his first child) and Eoin Morgan right down to the allrounders in Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan who have contributed important innings England have their batting bases covered. With the ball the seamers have held their own while the spin duo of Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy have excelled. In the field they have been as sharp as anyone, barring perhaps the Australians.Pietersen raring to go

Paul Collingwood is confident Kevin Pietersen can shake off the effects of an 8000-mile round trip back home to attend the birth of his child and be a major force in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. The biggest concern over his return to the Caribbean was the ash cloud that continues to linger over the Atlantic.
Pietersen left Barbados after England beat South Africa and missed the final Super Eight match against New Zealand and arrives back on Wednesday afternoon. He will slot back into the team at No. 3 with Ravi Bopara making way.
“Thankfully the ashes [from the volcano] stayed away, he is due in this afternoon so I am sure he’ll be a happy man and raring to go,” Collingwood said. “I don’t think with it being five hours ahead it should be an issue with tiredness and fatigue or anything like that, he’ll be a very happy man and as soon as he touches down, until then there will be doubts around, but he’s pretty much 100 percent playing tomorrow.”

They have also shown an adaptability and quickness-of-thinking that hasn’t always been an attribute of England’s one-day cricket. When the batting suffered mini wobbles against West Indies and New Zealand there was calm consolidation before the accelerator was pushed again – on both occasions by Morgan. With the ball there has been no one-dimensional game plan and the only aspect we have yet to see is how flexible the batting line-up can be and how the bowlers react of a sustained onslaught.”This is certainly the most powerful England side that I’ve played in, definitely,” Collingwood said. “When you look at all the guys going down to probably number ten, everyone can hit sixes, so also what the guys are doing with the ball, a lot of credit has to go to them as well because they are thinking for themselves a lot.”Whereas maybe in the past they were always kind of guided by the captains or whatever but they really are going out there and thinking for themselves and thinking what the oppositions strengths and weaknesses are and adjusting the fields accordingly, that’s been one of the crucial things in our development.”Collingwood has admitted he feared for England’s future in the tournament as Duckworth-Lewis played a major part in Guyana and all he wanted was a chance for his team to show their full potential.”It hasn’t surprised me at all, but we’ve got to take all that talent we’ve got on the team sheet out into the middle,” he said. “Thankfully, we’ve done that [so far]. There were times against Ireland, where we were close to going out of the tournament.”You were thinking ‘all this potential we’ve got, and we were nearly going out’. We had that little bit of an early scare, which wasn’t probably a bad thing – because it kickstarted us into something special.”This is England’s second semi-final in a row after they reached the same stage at the Champions Trophy in September. On that occasion they were hammered by nine wickets against Australia, but there is now a far more confident air about the side.”I think the belief is the key thing,” Collingwood said. “We have done a few different things in training, there have been a couple of different selections that have proved crucial as well and overall that has given the side a lot of belief in areas that we were probably a little bit weaker. Once you see these guys on the team sheet its kind of, oh, we can take the opposition on now.”

Aston Villa fans react to £25m Bissouma bid

Aston Villa saw a £25million bid for Yves Bissouma rejected by Brighton and Hove Albion, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

The journalist tweeted that Villa are now prioritising a deal for Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentancur after Brighton batted away their offer for the 25-year-old.

Steven Gerrard seems intent on signing another midfielder before the January transfer window closes in a week’s time.

Villa bid was only half of Brighton’s valuation

The Athletic’s Brighton correspondent Andy Naylor wrote earlier in January that it would take a bid of £50m for the Seagulls to consider parting with Bissouma this month. They don’t see any need to sell, even though the Mali international is into the final 18 months of his contract and has apparently given no indication that he will sign an extension at the Amex Stadium.

Bissouma has previously been ‘linked’ with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, who all may now hope to beat Villa to his signature.

The Midlands outfit have spent £27m so far in Gerrard’s first transfer window, signing Lucas Digne permanently from Everton and loaning in Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen.

Here’s what Villa fans made of Percy’s revelation about the rejected bid for Bissouma, with many believing that sporting director Johan Lange has foolishly low-balled on the midfielder’s true value.

Taylor, Daley and Mohammed ensure clean sweep

Stafanie Taylor and Anisa Mohammed frustrated Sri Lanka and ensured West Indies swept the three-match Twenty20 series

Cricinfo staff25-Apr-2010
Scorecard
Sri Lanka will be sick of Stafanie Taylor, Shanel Daley and Anisa Mohammed after their tour of the Caribbean is over. For the third consecutive game, the West Indies trio frustrated Sri Lanka and ensured West Indies swept the three-match Twenty20 series. Sri Lanka had done well to keep West Indies to 112, out of which Taylor made a match-winning 59, but their inability to cope with Mohammed’s teasing offspin saw them slump to a 28-run loss at St Mary’s Park.Taylor, who in the previous two games had hit half-centuries, was again to the fore in testing circumstances. Sripali Weerakkody, bowling right-arm medium with the new ball, struck in the first over and then again to snap a brisk 40-run stand between Taylor and Juliana Nero. When Deandra Dottin edged Weerakoddy behind for 6, West Indies were 55 for 3 and Taylor had to reassess the situation. Shashikala Siriwardene, bowling her tidy offspin, and the left-armer Suwini de Alwis struck as well to keep the pressure up on the hosts. Taylor’s 59 off 50 balls was the highest score after Nero’s 24 and no other batsman crossed 6. Taylor was last out off the penultimate ball of the West Indies innings. As it turned out, she had again done enough with the bat. Sri Lanka’s chase got off to a good start with Dedunu Silva and Chamari Atapattu adding 40 in 5.5 overs, but Silva’s run-out for 13 off the last ball of the sixth over changed the complexion. Daley, who had been impressive in the first game with 3 for 13 off her quota, induced false strokes in consecutive overs to have Atapattu (27) and Inoka Galagedara stumped. From here the chase completely fell apart at the seams and like West Indies middle and lower order has succumbed, so did Sri Lanka’s. Only one other batsman reached double-figures and Mohammed accounted for the last four wickets in another outstanding spell of 4 for 8 from 3.3 overs.

Essex stung by Yusuf Pathan withdrawal

Essex have become the latest victim of the BCCI’s decision to revoke ‘No Objection Certificates’ for their contracted players to play in the English Twenty20 cup competition with Yusuf Pathan being ruled out

Cricinfo staff01-Apr-2010

Yusuf Pathan would have been an exciting prospect at Essex•Indian Premier League

Essex have become the latest victim of the BCCI’s decision to revoke ‘No Objection Certificates’ for their contracted players to play in the English Twenty20 Cup with Yusuf Pathan being ruled out.Pathan, a destructive batsman and offspin bowler, had been signed by Essex six weeks ago under agreement that he would be available. Yet, days after Northamptonshire announced that Virender Sehwag’s NOC had also been revoked, Essex were told by the BCCI that Pathan would not be made available.David East, the Essex chief executive, was disappointed and puzzled by the decision. “Six weeks ago we completed the signing. We made the decision not to make this public until we had received the NOC from the BCCI. We made a formal request for Yusuf’s release to the BCCI and received verbal confirmation from the player that this would be granted by them,” he said.”On the March 26 we received official confirmation from BCCI that Yusuf could play for us this season, subject to the usual agreement that should he be required for international duty during his time with us then he would be released back to play for India.”Unfortunately the following day (March 27) we received notification that the NOC had been revoked by the BCCI because of a review of the Indian players international workload during the course of the year. Naturally we are very disappointed and puzzled by the timing of their decision.”Pathan is currently playing for the Rajasthan Royals at the IPL and recently scored the fastest ever IPL hundred, off 37 balls against Mumbai Indians. His presence would have been a major boon for cricket fans in England and will be seen in some quarters as an example of the BCCI flexing its muscles at the ECB. No decision has been made over Piyush Chawla, who is due to go to Surrey this season. He is a less high-profile player than Sehwag or Pathan but the precedent set does not bode well for Surrey.
