Collingwood confident of resurgent England

There will be no rousing speech or chest-thumping patriotism from Paul Collingwood when England take the field for their semi-final against Sri Lanka because he doesn’t think his team needs it

There will be no rousing speech or chest-thumping patriotism from Paul Collingwood when England take the field for their semi-final against Sri Lanka because he doesn’t think his team needs it. The prospect of securing a place in their first major final since 2004 is motivation enough.”The guys are ready; they are excited,” he said. “If there was a feeling around the camp that the guys are nervous or anything like that then maybe something would have to be said. But the guys are so focused in the jobs they’ve got to do, roles they’ve got to play. We’ll have a team meeting tonight, but let me tell you I’m not going to come out with any rip-roaring speech.”England have been the surprise package at this tournament (Australia were always going to get the hang of Twenty20 eventually) and there has been a supreme confidence about their play since a nerve-wracking evening in Guyana when they feared a short run chase would give Ireland a chance of piping them. That would have been a cruel exit and since then they have shown how far they have developed as a Twenty20 unit. From the power-packed top order led by the selfless styles of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter to the in-form middle order of Kevin Pietersen (who is due back in the Carribbean on Wednesday afternoon after being at the birth of his first child) and Eoin Morgan right down to the allrounders in Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan who have contributed important innings England have their batting bases covered. With the ball the seamers have held their own while the spin duo of Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy have excelled. In the field they have been as sharp as anyone, barring perhaps the Australians.Pietersen raring to go

Paul Collingwood is confident Kevin Pietersen can shake off the effects of an 8000-mile round trip back home to attend the birth of his child and be a major force in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. The biggest concern over his return to the Caribbean was the ash cloud that continues to linger over the Atlantic.
Pietersen left Barbados after England beat South Africa and missed the final Super Eight match against New Zealand and arrives back on Wednesday afternoon. He will slot back into the team at No. 3 with Ravi Bopara making way.
“Thankfully the ashes [from the volcano] stayed away, he is due in this afternoon so I am sure he’ll be a happy man and raring to go,” Collingwood said. “I don’t think with it being five hours ahead it should be an issue with tiredness and fatigue or anything like that, he’ll be a very happy man and as soon as he touches down, until then there will be doubts around, but he’s pretty much 100 percent playing tomorrow.”

They have also shown an adaptability and quickness-of-thinking that hasn’t always been an attribute of England’s one-day cricket. When the batting suffered mini wobbles against West Indies and New Zealand there was calm consolidation before the accelerator was pushed again – on both occasions by Morgan. With the ball there has been no one-dimensional game plan and the only aspect we have yet to see is how flexible the batting line-up can be and how the bowlers react of a sustained onslaught.”This is certainly the most powerful England side that I’ve played in, definitely,” Collingwood said. “When you look at all the guys going down to probably number ten, everyone can hit sixes, so also what the guys are doing with the ball, a lot of credit has to go to them as well because they are thinking for themselves a lot.”Whereas maybe in the past they were always kind of guided by the captains or whatever but they really are going out there and thinking for themselves and thinking what the oppositions strengths and weaknesses are and adjusting the fields accordingly, that’s been one of the crucial things in our development.”Collingwood has admitted he feared for England’s future in the tournament as Duckworth-Lewis played a major part in Guyana and all he wanted was a chance for his team to show their full potential.”It hasn’t surprised me at all, but we’ve got to take all that talent we’ve got on the team sheet out into the middle,” he said. “Thankfully, we’ve done that [so far]. There were times against Ireland, where we were close to going out of the tournament.”You were thinking ‘all this potential we’ve got, and we were nearly going out’. We had that little bit of an early scare, which wasn’t probably a bad thing – because it kickstarted us into something special.”This is England’s second semi-final in a row after they reached the same stage at the Champions Trophy in September. On that occasion they were hammered by nine wickets against Australia, but there is now a far more confident air about the side.”I think the belief is the key thing,” Collingwood said. “We have done a few different things in training, there have been a couple of different selections that have proved crucial as well and overall that has given the side a lot of belief in areas that we were probably a little bit weaker. Once you see these guys on the team sheet its kind of, oh, we can take the opposition on now.”

Mithali Raj’s third consecutive half-century gave India an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series against England in Visakhapatnam. She scored 84 in an attractive stroke-filled innings to give India a convincing five-wicket win.For a second game in a row, India had to chase a below-par total. Raj came to the crease in the fifth over after Katherine Brunt trapped Anjum Chopra leg before for 2. Brunt bowled full and straight and got the ball to move away from the right-hander and beat Raj twice in the over. But in her next over, Raj waited for her to stray wide and drove her for fours to cover and point.India ticked along slowly but lost two wickets and after the 23 overs they were 59 for 3 where England, at the same point of their innings, had been 56 for 2. Wicketkeeper Sulakshana Naik, who replaced Anagha Deshpande for the game, had joined Raj at the fall of the third wicket, of Priyanka Roy. Jenny Gunn came on to bowl the 24th over and was first flicked by Raj to fine leg for four and then guided her to third-man boundary by Naik. The over cost England nine runs. Raj reached her half-century (off 77 balls) in her next over to keep India on course for a series win.The two batsmen tried to up the scoring rate and played some loose shots in the process but luck was on their side. Naik hit a four to third man by playing late to offspinner Laura Marsh while Raj got a boundary behind the wicket after she edged one off Gunn while attempting to drive. Naik fell in the 29th when trying to clear midwicket, caught by a diving Brunt on her fourth attempt.India reached the 100-run mark in the 34th over. It had taken England seven more overs to get to the milestone and it was the middle overs that were the difference between the two innings. While Raj, along with Naik and then Rumeli Dhar, picked up singles and fours with ease, England’s half-centurion Charlotte Edwards, and the middle order, were strangled by the accurate Indian spinners. England’s lack of quality spin options hurt them in the series. But today even their fast bowlers struggled to keep it tight during Raj’s innings. Brunt bowled three wides in the 36th over and five in all.Right through the series, India’s fast bowlers, especially their opening pair of Jhulan Goswami and Dhar, have been more disciplined and economical than their England counterparts. Today, Goswami gave India the first wicket, trapping Ebony Rainford-Brent for 12 in the seventh over. The task of rebuilding fell on Edwards once Jenny Gunn was run out with 26 on the board. Edwards and Atkins then added 39 at over three an over before Caroline Atkins fell in the 28th over trying to slog left-arm spinner Preeti Dimri. The two left-arm spinners, Dimri and Gouher Sultana, tied England down and it was only after Danielle Hazell came to the crease in the 44th over and started throwing her bat at everything that England’s scoring rate increased a touch. However it was too late to make a substantial difference by then, and Edwards’ dream of a first series win in India has been put on hold.

Wolves fans love Jose Sa footage

A number of Wolves fans have been hailing the brilliance of Jose Sa after the club’s official Twitter account posted a video showing his top ten saves.

Bruno Lage’s side are enjoying an increasingly excellent season in the Premier League, looking like genuine contenders to finish in the European places.

The 1-0 win at Manchester United felt like a big moment in Wolves’ campaign and they backed that up with a solid 3-1 victory at home to Southampton last weekend.

One player who has been a key man for Wanderers is Sa, who has performed magnificently between the sticks and easily taken on the difficult task of replacing Rui Patricio, starting all 20 league games and conceding just 15 goals.

On Monday, Wolves’ Twitter account shared footage of the Portuguese’s ten best saves this season, outlining what a superb signing he has been.

Hopkins emerges from McCullum's shadow

Being Brendon McCullum’s back-up isn’t easy but Gareth Hopkins is starting to be viewed as a first-choice instead of a replacement

Being Brendon McCullum’s back-up isn’t easy but Gareth Hopkins is starting to be viewed as a first-choice instead of a replacement. Hopkins, the wicketkeeper-batsman, has chipped in during each of his four limited-overs appearances against Australia over the past two weeks and has also taken the gloves from McCullum.Hopkins, who scored 21 and 36 in the Twenty20s, was not in the original one-day squad but he came in when McCullum hurt his back and registered 35 and 45 in the past two ODIs. His only regret is that he hasn’t been able to win games for his team.”I’m quite happy with my performances to a point, but batting at No.7 the goal is to finish the job, and I haven’t been doing that,” he said. “Although I’m happy with starts, I need to kick on.”However, he thinks his contributions have caught Australia by surprise and he expects them to be paying more attention in Thursday’s fourth ODI in Auckland. “They wouldn’t have seen me [until now],” he said. “They wouldn’t have as strong plans as against other batters, but I’m sure after seeing the last couple of games they will have better plans. It’s up to me to either stick to my plan or tweak it a bit to make it better.”Mark Greatbatch, the coach, has been impressed with Hopkins’ efforts and said he has “stepped up to the plate”. “He’s really fronted up,” he said. “He’s busy, he’s improvising, he’s playing well. When guys are playing like that they tend to get on the selection sheet.”Hopkins is 33 and has usually had to wait for McCullum to break down, ask for a rest or hand over the gloves. He has appeared in one Test, 16 ODIs and four T20s and wants more.”The last five years I have been back-up for Brendon, whenever there’s a series or tour I’ve always been ready just in case Brendon gets injured,” he said. “When he woke up with a sore back [in Auckland], I just carried on. I’ve felt comfortable in the team and with the intensity of the international game.”

Nós adquirimos o Arthur Caike, o Jandrei, estamos encaminhando a compra do Elias, do Luiz Otávio.
