PNG favourites on home soil

The chances for the smaller cricket nations to reach the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in 2012 have been reduced now that the tournament will again be a 12-team event rather than 16

Papua New Guinea have enjoyed considerable success in recent times•ICC/Cricket Europe

The chances for the smaller cricket nations to reach the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in 2012 have been reduced now that the tournament will again be a 12-team event rather than 16, but there are still two places up for grabs for Associate and Affiliate nations. Those from the Asia-Pacific region have reached their final stage of qualifying for the global play-off in UAE early next year. Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Japan and hosts Papua New Guinea will take part in a four-day event in Port Moresby to determine which team travels to the Middle East.Papua New Guinea have sped up the rankings in the last 12 months and now sit at No. 19 in the world, but that success brings with it added pressure of being hosts and favourites.According to wicketkeeper Jack Vare, preparations have been going exceptionally well for the team, who are coached by Andy Bichel, and they are determined not to waste an opportunity to perform at their peak on the turf wickets of Amini Park and Colts Cricket Ground.”Representing your country in front of your family and friends is a great honour,” Vare said. “It is great to be able to show them the exciting and entertaining brand of cricket the Hebou Barramundis can play and demonstrating the spirit of PNG through the game of cricket. Although there is the added pressure of playing on home soil, I know all the players are excited and looking forward to the tournament.”Fiji are looming as the team most capable of toppling the seemingly invincible PNG. With an extremely busy international schedule ahead for the national team, including the tournament in PNG, the South Pacific Games and then World Cricket League Division 6 in the next three months, preparation has been more important than ever before and allrounder Kitione Tavo was happy with the level the team have reached.”Training has been good and I think our preparation is going well,” Tavo said. “There’s a great feeling among the team this year.”Fiji have also been boosted by the return of two players, who have been out of the national side for a number of years. Fast bowler Imran Kahn returns after a six-year absence, teaching in the USA, and Jikoi Kida returns after a stint in Egypt with the Fijian army.Japan will enter the tournament with new-found confidence after an intense couple of months of training since their last tournament. It has been well documented that Japan performed considerably below the standard they expect of themselves at the recent World Cricket League Division 7 event in Botswana. However coach Chris Ferguson is confident his side can learn from the mistakes made and begin the rebuilding process in PNG.”That is the nature of international cricket,” Ferguson said. “There is always another tournament coming up and you need to respond quickly. We made mistakes in Botswana but the players have reviewed their own performances, been honest with themselves and the team, and have put in a lot of hard work over the past six weeks to rectify the problems that we encountered.”With an average age of under 23, Vanuatu will be the youngest side competing in Port Moresby. After a strong showing at the Regional Under-19 event in February, when they finished second behind PNG, Vanuatu will be hoping their young talent can demonstrate the mental toughness required to match it with the best senior developing countries in the region.”We are pleased with the progress we are making but understand we are in for some tough battles,” captain Andrew Mansale said.Despite fielding a side with seven players who are 21 years or under, Mansale is confident that his side can compete. “We are expecting all teams to be tough, we have worked very hard with our fitness trainer Brett Wright for 20 weeks now and have been working hard with a special emphasis on running between the wickets and bowling and batting variations.”Samoa are the only Affiliate participating in the ICC EAP Division 1, but that is of little concern to their squad who plan to make a real impact against the four Associate sides. The Samoan team breezed through Division 2 in April undefeated, and have been preparing in New Zealand to take the next step up. “Samoa will go into the tournament as, no doubt, underdogs,” Samoan Cricket general manager Andrew Flynn said. “However members of the team are fit, healthy, ready to compete and will be carrying the pride of Samoa with them.”Former New Zealand bowler Murphy Su’a will coach the side, which despite having a wealth of older more experienced players in their line-up, will need some young talents like Tiafala Alatasi to perform well with the ball if they are to make a genuine impact in Port Moresby.”If I can limit the runs and do my job, and each of us do our job, we will do well,” Alatasi said, who was the leading wicket-taker at the Division 2 event in April.

Warriors seal thrilling last-ball win

The Warriors lower-order batsmen kept swinging their first balls for boundaries to make sure the comeback from Ashwell Prince and Johan Botha was not wasted

The Warriors lower-order batsmen kept swinging their first balls for boundaries to make sure the comeback from Ashwell Prince and Johan Botha was not wasted. Royal Challengers Bangalore had the game won, then lost, then won, then lost, then won, until they finally lost it last ball. Prince and Botha came together with 91 required off 8.1 overs, but by the time Prince fell for 74 off 55 they were left needing 18 off 10. Craig Thyssen then squeezed a yorker out for four before edging the next, Nicky Boje came out to pull the first he faced for a six only to watch Botha play two dots before getting out in the final over. With six required off two, it was Wayne Parnell’s turn to pull a slower bouncer away for four before hitting the final ball to the left of long-on for the match-winning couple.Like the famous World Cup tie between India and England at the same venue, this match kept turning this way and that so frequently it left you dizzy. Trusting a flat track and short boundaries, the batsmen remained brave, even when it was tense. Especially when it was tense. All five of Bangalore’s set batsmen, whose attractive efforts ranged between 34 and 23, were caught at the boundary, leaving them an in-between total by Chinnaswamy Stadium standards. The main beneficiary of that hitting was Rusty Theron who ended up with four wickets.Warriors came out swinging too: JJ Smuts lofted S Aravind, the near last-over hero, for a six off the first ball he bowled, Prince swung Chris Gayle for two sixes in his second. Led by Daniel Vettori, the man with the best T20I economy rate among bowlers with at least 50 overs to their name, Bangalore inched back into the match. Vettori accounted for Colin Ingram and Justin Kreusch, but his side’s fielding was to soon let him down.Prince should have been out for 28 off 28 when Viratn Kohli dropped a sitter at midwicket. Botha should have been out for 14 when his top edge lobbed over Mayank Agarwal, who was a couple of yards inside the boundary, at fine leg. That shouldn’t take the shine off the efforts of the two. A long-form specialist at international level, Prince showed there was enough room for correct batsmen playing correct shots in Twenty20. He kept the fight up even as wickets fell at the other end, and stayed long enough to bring up his highest Twenty20 score. And if he did lose faith with the wickets falling, Botha would have reinforced it with a smacking off-drive for four off the first ball he faced. The two then started peppering all boundaries, and a game of tactics ensued. Vettori kept attacking through himself, Dirk Nannes and Chris Gayle, leaving the final two overs for the Indian bowlers who had gone for plenty earlier. Neither Prince nor Botha took a backward step. Prince saw Vettori off with a six off the last ball he bowled, and Botha bid Gayle farewell with two sixes in his last. Then began two crazy overs for two Karnataka youngsters. Abhimanyu Mithun ran in with 18 to defend in the last two, with 72 having come off the previous 6.1. Prince top-edged a slog to send Bangalore into ecstasy. Mithun followed it up a decent full and wide ball, which Thyssen squirted past point. Mithun came back next ball with a short-of-a-length delivery that took the edge. Six off five with two wickets so far. In came Boje, got a short ball, pulled it over wide long-on for six.Time for another Bangalorean then to try to redeem himself. With just six to defend, Aravind responded boldly. He went round the stumps, called the keeper up, and beat Botha with back-to-back slower deliveries. Then the man with 42 off 23 made the mistake, holing out to long-on. Boje managed only a single next ball, and Royal Challengers were about to make the final mistake. For the first time in the over Aravind sent the keeper back. Parnell was almost expecting a short ball, when he sat back and waited for the slower bouncer to arrive. He pulled it in the air, it bounced inches inside the midwicket boundary. Botha thought it was a six, and charged onto the field. He had to go back and watch a mis-hit to long-on off the last ball before he could finally celebrate. Bangalore had lost the inaugural match of a league season again, taking the count to two in IPL and two in Champions league.

Essex draw despite stumble

Surrey’s County Championship clash with second division rivals Essex petered out into a draw in Croydon, but not before Essex had flirted with the cricketing equivalent of hara-kiri

Mark Pennell at Whitgift School21-May-2011ScorecardSurrey’s County Championship clash with second division rivals Essex petered out into a draw in Croydon, but not before Essex had flirted with the cricketing equivalent of hara-kiri. Having posted a mammoth season’s-best first innings total of 548 to secure a slender lead of 42 at the mid-point of the game, Essex were in danger of throwing away all their good work away in Saturday’s opening session as they slumped from 118 for 2 to 201 for 7.Staunch Hammers fan and former England captain Graham Gooch, the Essex batting coach, moaned: “This is like watching West Ham play,” as he witnessed his county’s batsmen tossing away their wickets in the first two hours of the day.The visitors lost England opener Alastair Cook to the ninth ball of the day after adding only two to his overnight score. Prodding forward at Gareth Batty the right-hander nicked one to keeper James Foster to go for 64. Matt Walker then pushed well forward to a turning delivery from theformer Yorkshire spinner and appeared to be outside the line, only to be given leg before for 35 to make it 151 for 4.James Foster (7) called for a suicidal single to mid-on to be run out by Yasir Arafat’s direct hit then Adam Wheater’s slog sweep against Batty sailed into the hands of Kevin Pietersen at deep midwicket to go for 34. First innings top-scorer and world record six-hitter Graham Napierreached 15 before being bowled by a shooter from Zander de Bruyn then alarm bells started to ring in the Essex dressing room when David Masters became their second run out victim.Committing the cardinal sin of failing to ground his bat when running a single, he was undone and red-faced when substitute fielder Jason Roy threw down the stumps from backward point. With the Essex score on 222 for 8 for an overall advantage of 266, Surrey began to scent an amazing turn around but hopes of a remarkable last day win were slammed firmly in their faces by a ninth wicket stand of 71 between Tim Phillips and Chris Wright. Phillips notched a worthy 114-ball 50 while Wright matched his first innings score of 34 as Surrey ran out of luck and ideas. The stand eventually came to an end after 21 overs when Phillips, in attempting to glance, edged a leg-side ball from Rory Hamilton-Brown into the keeper’s gloves to give the Surrey captain his first championship wicket for the club. Wright soon followed, chasing a wide one from Tim Linley to toe-end another catch to Steven Davies, but with 324 on the board the visitorscould consider the game safe.Surrey were left with a minimum of 27 overs to chase an impossible target of 367 for victory and though Tom Maynard entertained with his stroke play, the sides shook hands on the draw at 5pm shortly after Maynard’s demise for a cameo 26. Hamilton-Brown was left unbeaten on 34, his side banking 10 points while Essex travelled home with nine after an entertaining four days at Whitgift School.

Playing for Sri Lanka bigger than IPL – Dilshan

Sri Lanka’s newly appointed captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has said he doesn’t mind leaving the IPL early in order to prepare for the upcoming tour of England

Sri Lanka’s newly appointed captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has said he doesn’t mind leaving the IPL early in order to prepare for the upcoming tour of England. Dilshan is among the 11 Sri Lankan players who have been asked by Sri Lanka Cricket to return by May 5, in order to attend a training camp before leaving for England on May 11.”Personally, I am not unhappy to return early,” said Dilshan, who is on a brief visit to Colombo amid his IPL commitments with Royal Challengers Bangalore. “Playing for my country is more important than playing the IPL. I think everybody selected for the England tour will be happy to come early. We have a new interim coach [Stuart Law] and a new batting coach [Marvan Atapattu]. I am also new as captain. We need to prepare together to build up for the big England tour.”The Indian board, however, said it would ask its Sri Lankan counterpart to reconsider. “According to us, the Sri Lankan players were to stay here till May 21, as they had promised, and the franchises are also under the same impression,” BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said. “But now they want to go back early and it is not appropriate.”Apart from reaffirming his commitment to the national side, Dilshan has also toned down the flashier aspects of his image as he gets ready for captaincy. “Times have changed. I pierced my ear when my daughter cried when her ears were being pierced,” he said. “Now I don’t see a need to wear the earring. It’s the same with my hair. [Streaking it] was fashionable then for me, it is not so now.”Dilshan, however, said he was not planning to tone down his attacking brand of cricket. “I have come this far today because of the way I play my cricket. I don’t see any reason why I should change it. I am an aggressive player and I may apply that aggression to my captaincy as well, depending on the circumstances.”Captaincy is a challenging role for me. It’s a dream come true. I never expected it. I want to give it my best shot. I have played for nearly 12 years. It’s been a very long journey to the top.”Dilshan said he was “lucky” to have two past captains – Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene – in the side and was looking forward to playing “good cricket” on the England tour. “We know they [England] are a strong side in their own conditions but we are capable of giving them a good run.”We have an experienced batting line up and the first thing we need to do is to get used to the conditions there. We need to get acclimatised as quick as possible if we are to put up a good contest against England,” he said. The England tour will be Sri Lanka’s first full series after the retirement of offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, but Dilshan was confident his spinners – Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv – would deliver. “We have to look forward to the new bowlers like Suraj Randiv,” he said. “We are giving the opportunity to Suraj to do the job for us.”In the absence of Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s pace attack will be led by Dilhara Fernando, who has played 35 Tests. Chanaka Welegedara and Suranga Lakmal have played eight Tests between them, while fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep and bowling allrounder Thisara Perera are yet to make their Test debuts.”I have the fullest confidence in my fast bowlers. Nuwan Pradeep is playing with me in the same team for Royal Challengers in the IPL and he is the best bowler in the squad.” Dilshan said. “We want to give young fast bowlers a chance if we don’t they’ll never get the experience. We have given the opportunity to the young fast bowlers and I hope they will make use of it.”SLC had initially signed a No Objection Certificate (NOC) with its players allowing them to participate in the IPL until May 20. The tournament carries on until May 28, while the England tour kicks off with a warm-up game on May 14. The BCCI has been in talks with SLC, to convince them to allow their players to extend their IPL participation, but Sri Lanka is unlikely to relent.”The BCCI has asked us to reconsider our decision, but we have not changed our stand,” SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said. “We did sign a no-objection agreement with the players to play in the IPL. But there was no date to return. I am sure the BCCI will understand country must come first before IPL.”
