Tendulkar's 49th century grinds Australia down

Only a man blessed with immense powers of endurance could sustain a 20-year Test career and Sachin Tendulkar displayed exactly that quality on a day of Indian dominance in Bangalore. Tendulkar batted through the day, along the way recording his 49th Test century and helping to steer M Vijay to his first, as India all but demolished Australia’s first-innings advantage.Tendulkar finished the day unbeaten on 191 and MS Dhoni was on 11, and with India requiring only a draw to win the series, there was no need for Dhoni to consider a declaration. How Ricky Ponting would love to have called a close to India’s innings himself, after a day on which his attack looked toothless and failed to make a breakthrough until 3.21pm.When they did, they quickly made it two. Vijay’s edge behind off Mitchell Johnson was followed four balls later by the departure of the unlucky debutant Cheteshwar Pujara, who was padded up for more than six hours only to be greeted with skidder from Johnson, who trapped the new man lbw for 4.Suresh Raina made 32 before he drove Michael Clarke to mid-off late in the afternoon, but by then India were within sight of Australia’s first-innings 478. They had Tendulkar and Vijay to thank; their third-wicket partnership began on Sunday afternoon, stretched until after tea on Monday and was worth 308 runs. Both players batted wonderfully well, barely giving Australia the sniff of a wicket.Tendulkar moved to 99 with a slog-swept six off Nathan Hauritz and repeated the stroke to move into triple figures while offering the spectators at long-on a catch. Nobody has scored more Test hundreds than Tendulkar, who celebrated his seventh in the past year with his usual bat-raise and glance to the heavens, but without any major display of emotion.Vijay witnessed the ease with which his senior partner raced through the nineties but found it not so simple himself, and was stuck on 99 for more than 20 minutes. The Australians tried to dry up his options with short balls and when he eventually pushed a quick single to cover, he leapt for joy and was embraced by Tendulkar, who had started his Test career when Vijay was five years old.In those two decades, Tendulkar has had only one year – 2002 – better than his vintage efforts of 2010, which earned him the ICC Cricketer of the Year award last week. He continued that form by handling all of Australia’s bowlers with supreme comfort, racing to triple figures before lunch after he had started the day on 44.Tendulkar pulled Johnson for consecutive fours, sliced Shane Watson over cover with ease and respectfully kept out the most consistent of Australia’s bowlers, Ben Hilfenhaus. But the harshest punishment was saved for Hauritz. Even Shane Warne failed to mesmerise Tendulkar and in comparison, he found Hauritz easier to read than a cheap paperback.Smart Stats

Sachin Tendulkar scored his 49th Test century and 11th against Australia. His tally of 11 centuries against Australia puts him second on the all time list behind Jack Hobbs.

Tendulkar reached his century with two sixes off Nathan Hauritz. He has reached a century with a six on five occasions.

Tendulkar’s century was his sixth of the year putting him third in the list of batsmen with the most centuries in a calendar year.

No wicket fell in the first session on the first three days of the Test. The most runs scored in the first session were 99 on the second day when Australia moved from 285 to 384.

The 308-run partnership for the third wicket between M Vijay and Tendulkar is the second highest against Australia.

During his innings, Tendulkar went past 150 for the 20th time in Tests surpassing Brian Lara’s record of 19 150-plus scores. It was also his sixth score of 150 plus against Australia, going past Wally Hammond and Lara who have five each.

As well as the two sixes, Tendulkar worked Hauritz effortlessly through the gaps, using his feet with the confidence of a man who knew exactly what was coming. The morning began with Hauritz conceding two boundaries down leg side to Tendulkar and that set the tone for much of the day.By comparison, Vijay was generally not as forceful but was no less important for India. He scored slower than his partner but showed sublime placement on both sides of the wicket and occasionally went over the top against Hauritz. There were echoes of VVS Laxman in Vijay’s clips and drives through the gaps, and that is enough to worry any Australian side.Unlike Tendulkar, Vijay did have a couple of nervous moments, including an lbw appeal from Hilfenhaus just after lunch that could easily have been given out. Before the break, Vijay had nearly run himself out in his eagerness to move from 49 to 50 when he pushed to cover, took off and was turned back, and was only saved by a wayward ping from the fielder Hauritz.Had Hauritz simply lobbed the ball to Tim Paine, Vijay would have been out by many metres. Peter George also gave up four overthrows with a high hurl from mid-off that would only have been appropriate had Paine also been 203 centimetres tall. Those efforts epitomised Australia’s sloppy and wearying day.The only man who didn’t seem tired at stumps was Tendulkar. That’s the benefit of 20 years of practice.

Nesta quarta, diante do campeão brasileiro, a ilusão será renovada.”

DEPORTIVO LARA (VEN)
O Deportivo Lara é o grande azarão do grupo.

O sólido goleiro Martín Campaña herdou a braçadeira.

Resurgent Zimbabwe face stern test

As next-door neighbours and useful sparring partners, Zimbabwe are regular opponents in the early stages of South Africa’s international season, with 20 of their previous 36 encounters taking place between late August and early November

Andrew Miller and Sahil Dutta07-Oct-2010Match FactsFriday, October 8, Bloemfontein
Start time 6:00pm (1600 GMT)All eyes will be on Grant Flower to see if he can reproduce his Essex form on the international stage, six years after last playing for Zimbabwe•PA Photos

The Big PictureAs next-door neighbours and useful sparring partners, Zimbabwe are regular opponents in the early stages of South Africa’s international season, with 20 of their previous 36 encounters taking place between late August and early November. On paper, therefore, this short series would appear to be just another unequal struggle, especially given that Zimbabwe have only ever won two encounters against the regional heavyweights, none of which have come in the past decade.Unusually, however, the true focus of this tour is Zimbabwe’s resurgence, rather than South Africa’s search for early-season fluency, and the first match in Bloemfontein – which will also be the first time the two teams have met in a Twenty20 international – will be a significant indicator as to the extent of the country’s redevelopment. Everything about the team, from the return of Grant Flower at the age of 39 to the announcement that Reebok will be their new kit suppliers, suggests that the traumas of the recent past are dissipating, and a bright new dawn is in the offing.Whether the dawn is bright enough for them to pull off a surprise victory in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but with Graeme Smith having stepped down from his Twenty20 role in favour of the spinner Johan Botha, there’s a hint of inexperience upon which they’ll hope to capitalise. Besides, in the shortest form of the game, there’s a much greater scope for upsets, as Zimbabwe proved in beating Australia at the 2007 World Twenty20.Elton Chigumbura, Zimbabwe’s captain, has promised his team will come out with a new aggressive approach, having talked his tactics through with a brains trust that includes Alan Butcher, the former head coach at Surrey, as well as several stars of Zimbabwe’s brief golden era of the late 1990s, most notably Flower, Heath Streak the bowling coach and Alistair Campbell, the chief selector. With the 2011 World Cup fast approaching, this brief encounter could prove more instructive than past history would suggest.Form guideSouth Africa WWLLW
Zimbabwe LLLLWWatch out for…Grant Flower’s return to the fray after a six-year absence has been the biggest talking point of the tour. Despite a visa glitch that left him stranded at Harare Airport while the rest of the team set off for Johannesburg, he has now caught up with the squad and is ready to resume an international career that already encompasses 67 Tests and 219 ODIs. Assuming he’s fit and ready to take part in his first Twenty20 international, Zimbabwe will hope he can rediscover the form he displayed for Essex in the 2010 English summer, in which he was especially effective in the CB40 competition with 511 runs at 73.00 in 10 innings.David Miller had already created a stir by the time he made his international debut – age 20 – earlier this year against West Indies. He didn’t disappoint – making 33 from 26 balls down the order to help revive a flagging total and set up a narrow win. His blend of power and dexterity, alongside a clear-headed confidence makes him an ideal finisher who could prove the catalyst to South Africa’s improvement in the way Eoin Morgan has done for England.Team newsSouth Africa may have followed their lethargic showing in the World Twenty20 with a pair of wins over West Indies but suspicion remains they are still groping for a combination capable of challenging the best teams in this format. They have a new-look team for this series with Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis resting and AB de Villiers out with injury. The exciting prospect Colin Ingram will make his debut and Heino Kuhn gets another chance behind the stumps in place of de Villiers. Wayne Parnell’s return from injury gives the home side a boost while Ryan McLaren, who was surprisingly overlooked for the original squad, comes in for Albie Morkel, who picked up a side strain while playing for Chennai Super Kings in the Champions League.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Loots Bosman, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Heino Kuhn (wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Johan Botha (capt), 8 Ryan McLaren, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Wayne Parnell, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.Grant Flower’s presence in the top order dominates the team news while Ed Rainsford should get his chance after a strong showing in the ODI series against Ireland where he picked up 10 wickets in the three matches.Zimbabwe (possible) 1 Brendan Taylor, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Grant Flower, 4 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 5 Charles Coventry, 6 Chamu Chibhabha, 7 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 8 Prosper Utseya, 9 Shingirai Masakadza, 10 Ed Rainsford, 11 Chris Mpofu.Pitch and conditionsThere has not been an international match played at Bloemfontein since South Africa eased to an innings victory over Bangladesh almost two years ago. Back then there were runs aplenty for the home side before Bangladesh’s batsmen struggled. Twenty20 conditions should be benign and with the forecast set fair runs should be on offer.Stats and trivia 39 may not seem the normal age for newcomers but Grant Flower will make his Twenty20 International debut at Bloemfontein. Flower can at least claim to have some good form behind him. In his last international game, six years ago, he took 3 for 36 before top-scoring with 59 to help Zimbabwe edge to victory over Bangladesh. Since clubbing 94 from 45 balls against England at Centurion Loots Bosman has made 8, 0, 7, and 0 in Twenty20 Internationals.Quotes”Pro20 cricket is about who is the better team on the day, the uncertainty of this format is what makes it so exciting.”

Leeds: Ian Poveda set for Blackburn return

Leeds United correspondent Graham Smyth has provided an update on winger Ian Poveda and a return to Blackburn Rovers.

The Lowdown: Poveda’s Leeds career

Poveda was brought to the club by Victor Orta back in 2020 and has gone on to make 20 appearances for the first-team at Elland Road, 14 of which came in the Premier League last season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 22-year-old was sent on loan to Blackburn Rovers for the 2021/22 campaign, however, he has been out through injury since November.

The winger has been recovering at Thorp Arch in recent months, but now looks set to make a return to Ewood Park.

The Latest: Smyth’s post

Smyth took to Twitter on Monday to provide an update regarding Poveda and a return to Blackburn.

He confirmed that Poveda will ‘return’ to Blackburn ‘this week’, labelling it as a ‘trial of sorts’ with Tony Mowbray to decide if he wants the Leeds man around for the final three Championship games.

“Ian Poveda will return to Blackburn Rovers towards the end of this week for a trial of sorts, to see if his loan spell can resume.

“A chance to finish the season on a high, after a lot of potential and promise was dashed by injury.”

The Verdict: Caution needed

Poveda has returned to the grass in recent weeks but hasn’t played competitively in 2022, so there could be a risk of a new injury occurring if Rovers overload the winger in the coming weeks.

However, you can see why Blackburn want to see Poveda in action, especially as they have continued to pay a percentage of his salary while he has been sidelined.

Blackburn’s playoff hopes are also fading quickly as they are without a win in five, so they may see Poveda’s return as a welcome boost as they look to turn things around and finish in the top six.

Tottenham prepare Edwards bid

According to Football Insider, some promising transfer news has come out of Tottenham Hotspur and it involves promising Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites eye lower league talent?

Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have been no strangers to lower league talent, according to reports in recent months.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The likes of Djed Spence, currently shining on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough, has been at the centre of Tottenham’s interest alongside Posh defender Benjamin Mensah.

Tottenham have also apparently turned their attention to the signing of Oxford United defender Luke McNally in recent months with one bid of £2 million having already been put on the table (Football Insider).

Now, as per FI, news has emerged on another.

The Latest: Spurs prepare Edwards bid…

According to their information, Tottenham are preparing an offer for the centre-back as they line up a move.

Peterborough, it is believed, are braced for bids from the Lilywhites and other clubs with the north London side now stepping up their interest.

This comes after Spurs started making regular checks on Edwards ‘in recent weeks’.

The Verdict: Make a move?

The England Under-19 international is apparently very highly rated and has already been impressing in England’s second tier.

Edwards, still only a teenager, has played very regularly in the Championship under both ex-boss Duncan Ferguson and new manager Grant McCann.

In that time, he has stood out as a brilliant performer, averaging one of the highest pass accuracy percentages out of Peterborough’s squad whilst also a noteworthy amount of clearances per 90 (WhoScored).

Described as an ‘incredible talent’ by his former gaffer Ferguson, Edwards now attracting Spurs’ interest is hardly a surprise given some of his exceptional 2021/2022 performances.

Tottenham: Gold makes Sergio Reguilon claim

Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold has made a worrying revelation regarding Sergio Reguilon ahead of the meeting with Manchester City on Saturday evening.

The Lowdown: Reguilon a regular

The Spaniard, who Gold labelled ‘phenomenal’ back in 2020, has been a regular under Antonio Conte in recent months.

The left-back netted the winner in Conte’s first home league game in charge against Leeds United back in November and has been involved in every Premier League matchday squad under the Italian.

The 25-year-old was an unused substitute last time out against Wolves, though, and he may well be missing this weekend if training ground images are any barometer.

The Latest: Gold’s claim

Reliable reporter Gold shared a story on football.london on Thursday, looking at five things spotted at training.

One of the talking points to come out of Hotspur Way was that Reguilon, who Gold said is normally front and centre in training images, was nowhere to be seen.

The Verdict: A worry

Reguilon is yet to miss a Premier League squad all season, but he may well be missing against Pep Guardiola’s side on Saturday with no sign of the defender in training.

Hopefully it is simply a case of managing to dodge all camera shots at Hotspur Way, but judging by Gold’s claim, that may well not be the case.

Ryan Sessegnon came in at left-wing back against Wolves but made way after just 28 minutes for Dejan Kulusevski, and Conte’s options could well be limited once again.

Jayasuriya ends Worcestershire's losing run

Sanath Jayasuriya smashed a dazzling 87 as Worcestershire ended a grim run of defeats with a crushing nine-wicket win over Northamptonshire

25-Jun-2010
ScorecardSanath Jayasuriya smashed a dazzling 87 as Worcestershire Royals ended a grim run of defeats with a crushing nine-wicket win over Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the Friends Provident t20 match at New Road. After losing their previous six North Group games, the Royals stormed to their 141-run target with 34 balls to spare.Jayasuriya, whose three previous knocks since arriving at New Road had yielded just 21 runs, smacked five sixes and 10 fours off 45 balls. The was backed up by Australian Phil Jaques, who was undefeated on 47 – which contained one six and five fours off 41 deliveries. They put on 138 in 14.1 overs before Jayasuriya was caught at deep backward square by David Willey off Nicky Boje. Worcestershire, however, remain bottom of the table while it was only Northamptonshire’s second defeat in their last six outings. The Steelbacks, after winning the toss, were restricted to 140 for 5 with Royals’ spinner Moeen Ali taking a career-best 3 for 25. Northamptonshire lost their first wicket off the first ball of the third over when former New Road campaigner Chaminda Vaas was smartly run out by a diving underarm throw from James Cameron off Jack Shantry. It was an important wicket for the hosts, particularly as Vaas top-scored with 54 when his side won by 21 runs against Worcestershire in the match at Northampton on June 11. The Steelbacks’ unspectacular start to their innings was largely down to the Royals’ left arm paceman Shantry, whose opening three overs, including a maiden, cost a mere six runs.Niall O’Brien and Alex Wakely, however, stayed together to take the visitors on to the 50 mark in the ninth over. Their partnership was worth 49 in seven-and-a-half overs before Wakely drove Moeen to Richard Jones at long on for 31.Shortly afterwards Jones was unable to hold on to an awkward chance at long-off to dismiss O’Brien when he was on 23. He moved on to 34 before becoming the first of two wickets in successive deliveries for Moeen, who also accounted for David Sales.Rob White fell cheaply to Jayasuriya before Northamptonshire moved into three figures in the 17th over. They were then given a valuable lift by Elton Chigumbura, who cracked an undefeated 39 off 20 balls – including three sixes and two fours.
