Buchanan calls for review of coaching role

John Buchanan has called for a review of the position of coach, currently occupied by Tim Nielsen, in the aftermath of Australia’s 2-1 defeat in the Ashes

John Buchanan has called for a review of of current Australian coach Tim Nielsen’s position, in the aftermath of Australia’s 2-1 defeat in the Ashes. Nielsen had accepted responsibility for the outcome and had said there were things he could have done differently, but added that he had to concentrate on the job ahead. Buchanan, who coached Australia before Nielsen took over, stressed that it wasn’t just the coaching position which had to be reviewed but the entire system.”The coaching position needs to be looked at, whether we need a restructure of the position and the personnel,” he told the . “The first step is to deal with all the emotional criticism and then sit down and work out the best way forward.”My view, having gone through it in 2005, was that there was a lot to be achieved, once you actually try to find solutions rather than looking for scapegoats. It’s not just about the players. Some people have called for the selection panel to be looked at and I think we need to look at the whole system.”Nielsen began his tenure as coach successfully, with series wins over India and West Indies in the early part of 2008. But, since then, Australia’s record has been mixed. While they won against New Zealand at home and against South Africa away, they were defeated by India in the return series, experienced their first series loss at home in 16 years when they were beaten 2-1 by South Africa, and lost the Ashes.Buchanan said that Australia had not done well enough to monitor and study the opposition prior to taking them on. He was speaking more with regards to their performance in England, having lost twice in two attempts there since 2005.”We’ve lost two series in a row there now and even though we’ve got computer information on the opposition, we’re probably not scouting as well as we could,” he said. “It could be that we have a coach or somebody who follows the English team for a couple of months prior to an Ashes series.”It could be that we talk to professional players or coaches who are already over there, about conditions and what the ball is doing. But we need to find long-term solutions.”Ricky Ponting, the Australia captain, has expressed his interest in returning to England in 2013 in the quest for an elusive victory under his leadership there, and Buchanan was fully supportive of his ambition. However, he added that the coach needed to shoulder a greater element of responsibility in easing the burden off the captain.”Ponting has said he wants to be there when they go back in 2013 and I support that, but I think the point it raises is the issue of player management,” Buchanan said. “The captain doesn’t have to be the first person to answer questions, but it would be a radical change to the traditional cricket hierarchy. Everything revolves around the captain and that makes the position extremely, extremely difficult to handle over a long period of time.”

Grêmio (18%), Santos (5%), Palmeiras (2%) e Flamengo (1%) completam a lista.

O Verdão tem até números a seu favor. Isto porque em 2009, também após 23 rodadas, o Flamengo, que terminou como campeão, estava a 13 pontos do líder, coincidentemente o Palmeiras.

WIPA asks national governments to step in

The West Indian players currently boycotting the series against Bangladesh have written to CARICOM to help solve the impasse with the WICB

Cricinfo staff16-Jul-2009The West Indian players currently boycotting the series against Bangladesh have asked the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) to help solve the impasse with the WICB over player contracts. The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) hopes that Guyana president Bharat Jagdeo, the current chairman of CARICOM’s heads of government, will be able to intervene and resolve the dispute.”We at WIPA are fully conscious of the importance of cricket to the economy and unity of the region, and the psyche of its peoples – matters in which you and other Heads of Governments are continuously and intrinsically involved,” WIPA chief executive Dinanath Ramnarine wrote in a letter to Jagdeo. “Our players are deeply mindful of this responsibility they shoulder on behalf of this important group of stakeholders. It is, therefore, in this context that we at WIPA wish to have a speedy resolution to these issues.”A meeting between all three parties has reportedly been suggested though it is unclear whether the board has agreed.CARICOM – a nodal organisation of the region’s national governments – has in the past played a leading role in similar disputes, particularly when Keith Mitchell, the former Prime Minister of Grenada, was the chairman of the Heads’ sub-committee on cricket.Meanwhile, the WICB said it would start paying the players for the England tour and the home series against India according to agreements it believed it had already established. Although there are no contracts in place, payments will be made on the basis of verbal agreements and written undertakings the board had with WIPA.”At present, the situation remains the same,” WICB vice-president Dave Cameron told the . “We are not going to negotiate under duress and that is final. What we have done, however, is to make arrangements to pay players for their services. Presently, the wages for the England tour and the India tour are being processed and we will get it to the players as soon as possible.”Cameron said payments for the ICC World Twenty20 would be made when the WICB received its money from the ICC. The next ICC event is the Champions Trophy in September, for which the selectors are due to pick a provisional squad of 30 soon.

Vaughan expected to announce retirement

Michael Vaughan is expected to announce his retirement from international cricket this week

Andrew Miller28-Jun-2009Michael Vaughan, the man who led England to more Test victories than any other captain, is expected to announce his retirement from all cricket this week. A press conference has been scheduled for 11.30am at Edgbaston on Tuesday, at which it is widely anticipated that he will call time on his 16-year first-class career.Vaughan has struggled with injuries to his right knee which kept him out of cricket for over a year between November 2005 and May 2007. In January, he withdrew from the IPL auction to concentrate on getting back into the Test side in time for the Ashes, but still lost out on a place in the 16-man pre-Ashes squad.Vaughan’s timelineDecember 1999 – Makes England debut in Johannesburg, and impresses with an unflappable 33, despite a scoreline of 2 for 4
January 2000 – Named Man of the Match after scoring 69 to seal a consolation win for England at Centurion, in a match later discredited after Hansie Cronje revelations
May 2001 – First Test century, 120 against Pakistan at Old Trafford
Aug-Sept 2002 – Makes a Test-best 197 against India at Trent Bridge, closely followed by 195 at The Oval, in a remarkable tally of 615 runs in four Tests
January 2003 – Climbs to the top of the world rankings after his third century in five Tests against Australia, a brilliant 183 that secures a consolation win in Sydney
July 2003 – Named England captain for the second Test against South Africa at Lord’s after Nasser Hussain steps down
August 2003 – Secures first Test win as captain, by 70 runs at Trent Bridge
August 2003 – England level the series against South Africa with a nine-wicket win at The Oval
March 2004 – Leads England to their first series win in West Indies since 1967-68
May-August 2004 – England win all seven Tests in the summer against New Zealand and West Indies
January 2005 – A draw at Centurion Park gives England a series victory in South Africa for the first time since 1965
September 2005 – England regain the Ashes after 16 years with a draw at The Oval
February 2006 – Breaks down with a knee injury at the start of tour of India. Doesn’t play again for nearly a year
May 2007 – Makes Test comeback with a century at Headingley against West Indies
June 2007 – Resigns one-day captaincy
August 2007 – Loses his first home series as captain, going down 1-0 to India
August 2008 – Resigns as Test captain following five-wicket loss against South Africa at Edgbaston
September 2008 – Retains central contract, but is omitted from winter tours to India and West Indies
June 2009 – Overlooked for 16-man preliminary squad for Ashes seriesIt had been speculated that Vaughan’s final appearance for Yorkshire would take place in Sunday’s Twenty20 Cup fixture against Derbyshire at Headingley, but he was omitted from the starting line-up for that match. According to Stewart Regan, Yorkshire’s chief executive, any official announcement is on hold until Vaughan has met with the ECB, to whom he is still centrally contracted.”There is a meeting between Michael and the ECB scheduled for tomorrow, and after that it will be up to the ECB to make any formal announcement,” Regan told Cricinfo. “Michael has obviously not been selected in the squad today, his place has been taken by Anthony McGrath, and we are very much concentrating on what is a very important game for Yorkshire.”Vaughan, 34, captained England in 51 of his 82 Tests, and won a record 26 of these, including most famously the two matches that enabled England to regain the Ashes in 2005. But he hasn’t played international cricket since stepping down from the captaincy during the home series against South Africa last year, and this season he has made only 159 runs at 19.88 for Yorkshire. The last time he scored a century in a competitive match was for Yorkshire in a 50-over game against Surrey in Abu Dhabi this March.Aside from the growing acceptance that he will never play international cricket again, not least since Ravi Bopara burst onto the scene at the beginning of the season to nail down the No. 3 slot, Vaughan is believed to be wary of hampering the opportunities of young talent at Yorkshire – among them Jonathan Bairstow, the 19-year-old son of the former England wicketkeeper, David, who made his debut this season.”If Vaughan really is packing it in I can understand his decision, though it’s a sad day for all of us who played in 2005,” Steve Harmison told The Mail on Sunday. “He was a great leader on the field. He knew how to get the best out of me, by telling me I was the best bowler in the world. Maybe he was lying, maybe it was kidology but he knew how to press the buttons and we all wanted to play for him.”Vaughan scored three centuries out of a tally of 633 runs in the 2002-03 Ashes that preceded his 2005 triumph, and was one of the few English cricketers whom Australia hold in the highest regard. “I was slightly shocked about Vaughan not getting the inclusion [in the current Ashes squad],” said Brett Lee last week, “more so from what he’s done against us in the past, he’s got the utmost respect from all our players.”If, as expected, he does call it quits this week, the timing of Vaughan’s retirement will serve to spare the current Ashes team endless speculation about his chances of a recall, should early results against Australia go against them. One of his finest achievements as captain was to shield the side against panic in 2005, after a heavy defeat in the first Test at Lord’s. The same side was retained for each of the first four matches of the series.Vaughan is highly likely to remain close to the action this summer, however, as he is sure to be welcomed straight into the Sky commentary box, alongside his former team-mates and fellow England captains, Mike Atherton and Nasser Hussain, and his most formidable Ashes foe, Shane Warne.

Mortaza raring to go in World Twenty20

Having played only one IPL game, Mashrafe Mortaza can’t wait to get back on the field

Mashrafe Mortaza had a poor IPL, conceding 58 runs in the one match he played•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh fast bowler, who played only one match in IPL, can’t wait to get back on the field when the World Twenty20 begins on June 5 in England.Mortaza warmed the Kolkata Knight Riders bench for nearly a month after being bought for an unexpected US$600,000 and then conceded 58 runs in four overs for no wickets. However Mortaza said it was a great experience to mix with the top players in the IPL. “Now I want to play and do well for my country,” Mortaza was quoted telling . “That is the only thing on my mind.”Mohammad Ashraful, the Bangladesh captain, said the team relied on Mortaza to improve on their eighth position in the last World Cup. “He is a kind of player you turn to when in trouble and invariably he will deliver whether it is with the bat or ball. The whole team relies on him. He is our superstar.”The coach Jamie Siddons was confident the English conditions would favour Mortaza’s bowling. “Mashrafe is obviously one of our key players.”Bangladesh begin their World Cup campaign in Trent Bridge against India on June 6. They won two of their three warm-up games, beating Netherlands by 64 runs, Scotland by six wickets, while losing to New Zealand by four wickets.Mortaza picked up three wickets for 54 runs in the matches.

Rangers: McCann frustrated with Morelos

Neil McCann has lamented Alfredo Morelos’ attitude after what he spotted following Rangers’ win over St Mirren on Sunday.

The lowdown

The 25-year-old scored what turned out to be the winning goal as the Gers came from behind to win at St Mirren Park.

It was his 100th goal in Rangers colours, just over four years on from his arrival from HJK Helsinki. The Colombian reached the milestone in 199 appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Incidentally, the win saw Steven Gerrard’s side go three points clear at the top of the Premiership after second-placed Hearts were held to a draw by Dundee.

The latest

McCann claimed that he saw Morelos snub a request for a post-match interview from in-house media, saying that the Gers striker should have granted the club channel the courtesy and confessed himself ‘puzzled’ by his behaviour.

“Just a wee side note,” he told BBC Sportsound, as quoted by The Daily Record. “I’m watching, I think, one of the press officers walking out with Alfredo Morelos.

“I think Rangers TV have just asked for an interview and he’s just strolled right past them.

“Just strolled right passed them as if he’s not interested. I just think it’s really poor. Sometimes his attitude puzzles me, it really does.

“Everybody I speak to in house says he’s a great guy, and you get him the wrong way.

“But I think scoring 100 goals today, which turns out to be the winner and your club channel wants to get your thoughts on it, whether his English is great or not, just one question would’ve been good.”

The verdict

There are certainly grounds to question Morelos’ attitude. Last season, Rangers accepted charges of violent conduct against the 25-year-old after incidents against Hibernian and Dundee United (via BBC Sport).

Overall, he’s racked up seven red cards since he arrived at Ibrox, along with 50 yellows, and his apparent snub of the club’s in-house media outlets is very much a blot on the copybook of a player whose exploits in front of goal have been hugely impressive.

In other news, some Rangers fans were left fuming by this development.

Yorkshire survive despite Onions' five

It is an excitement unknown in one-day cricket but still loved by the traditionalist: the sight of a team fighting the odds trying to salvage a hard-earned draw

It is an excitement unknown in one-day cricket but still loved by the traditionalist: the sight of a team fighting the odds trying to salvage a hard-earned draw. Yorkshire, regaining their pride after a dismal third day against Durham, fought their way through the tense final day to achieve this, despite the superb bowling of Graham Onions. At the start of the day Yorkshire, needing another 391, but that was never an option and Yorkshire’s mindset was clear from the start they battened down for the draw. The Durham bowlers were able to find little swing or seam movement and only the noble Onions really impressed, as the others, Steve Harmison included, were a little below par for a team eagerly pressing for victory in their opening Championship match. Onions was undaunted by the hard work – of which he had plenty throughout the day in taking 5 for 56 off 28 overs – and produced several fine deliveries, one of which moved in and bowled the experienced Jacques Rudolph for 16, after he and Joe Sayers had made a very solid start to the day. This brought in Michael Vaughan, whose chief preoccupation seemed to be to play for the needs of his team ahead of his own England ambitions. He subdued his natural attacking flair and concentrated on occupying the crease for as long as possible. When he finally reached double figures, with a typically handsome back-foot cover drive for four, he had faced 45 balls. Only 57 runs were scored in the pre-lunch session but, most importantly for Yorkshire, only one wicket had fallen.Briefly the scoring rate quickened after lunch, but this was mainly due to some loose bowling, and when Harmison went round the wicket and Durham tightened up, the rate again dropped below two an over. Sayers faced 112 balls for his gallant 30, before Onions slanted a ball across him, producing an involuntary nudge to the keeper. In his next over Vaughan fell for 20 to a similar dismissal, fishing fatally at a ball just outside his off stump to further dent his hopes of a Test recall when the squad is named next week. With two crucial wickets falling in quick succession, this was the critical moment of the day. Could Yorkshire rebuild – or was this the vital match-winning breakthrough for Durham? Yorkshire it was who grasped the moment. Anthony McGrath and Andrew Gale stood in the breach, presenting the broadest of Yorkshire bats and taking runs only as they offered themselves. They added a solid 44 before Gale tried to cut a ball from Liam Plunkett, brought on late, that was too close to him and was caught at first slip. After tea the light worsened rapidly. It was a sickening moment for McGrath, on 26 and fighting for his side’s survival, when a superb delivery from Onions out of the gloom found the edge of his bat and was brilliantly caught low to his left by Michael Di Venuto at second slip. Immediately the umpires took the players off the field and, with a bit of rain, nine crucial overs were lost.Gerard Brophy has a reputation for inconsistency in a crisis, and lived up to it on this occasion. Having played quite responsibly for 27, he then threw his wicket away with a needless hook that presented long leg with a straight-forward catch. Durham, with 17 overs to go, were still in with a good chance now with four more wickets to take.Tim Bresnan and Adil Rashid, two who have done well in tight situations before, stood firm until Bresnan had a rush of blood to the head, swung at a ball from Onions just outside his off stump and was given out caught at the wicket. He was the sixth Yorkshire batsman in the innings to reach 20 while failing to pass 30. The mantle of saviour passed to Rashid. Harmison cut his pace somewhat but was not accurate enough to force the batsman to play often enough and with Steve Patterson, another youngster hanging in with determination, Yorkshire managed to salvage a respectable draw in a tense finish.Perhaps, though, it is a fault of modern county cricket that such a finish should be possible. Fifty years ago, when players often bowled more overs in three days than they now do in four, top-class spin bowlers would expect to bowl a team out almost every time on crumbling pitches. Today, pitches rarely crumble and spinners are rarely top-class unless from overseas. The game has lost something, but we can be grateful that the exciting draw is still a possibility.
