Leeds eyeing Southampton’s Angus Gunn

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is eyeing a move for Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Leeds boss was reported to have wanted to sign the 25-year-old prior to his £13.5m move to the south coast in the summer of 2018 and appears to have kept tabs on his progress ever since.

Football Insider claim that despite newly-promoted Norwich having agreed a fee with the Saints, Bielsa’s side are looking to “hijack” the deal.

The report reveals that Leeds have registered their interest in the goalkeeper as they look to swoop in late, and that Gunn is seen as the perfect cover for Illan Meslier as they look to offload Kiko Casilla.

Perfect back-up for Meslier

Hailed as being “tremendous” by former Southampton boss Mark Hughes, and someone who could eventually be an England international, Gunn could finally arrive at Elland Road after a few years of Bielsa wanting him.

Gunn is on around £4ok-per-week at St Mary’s, which isn’t much of a financial gamble for Andrea Radrizzani to take, and in signing him, he would give Bielsa someone who’s Premier League experienced and capable of providing back-up to Meslier.

The Saints stopper has played top-flight football with the Saints, as well as enjoying Championship stints with the likes of Norwich and Stoke.

And, at 25, he still has plenty of years to develop and he could give Leeds and Bielsa a number of seasons keeping Meslier on his toes.

The Leeds boss will surely be buzzing at the prospect of seeing the club potentially landing a man he first wanted back in 2018.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has dropped a major Leeds United transfer update…

Final-ly, Dolphins to clash withTitans

To the relief of everyone concerned – except perhaps the Eastern Province Jumbos – KwaZulu-Natal cruised into the Standard Bank Cup final with a seven-wicket victory in their rain-affected, extended semifinal at Kingsmead on Wednesday

Peter Robinson19-Feb-2001To the relief of everyone concerned – except perhaps the Eastern Province Jumbos – KwaZulu-Natal cruised into the Standard Bank Cup final with a seven-wicket victory in their rain-affected, extended semifinal at Kingsmead on Wednesday.Despite the loss of 90 minutes play in midafternoon as drizzle fell, Natal were able to track down a revised target of 165 in some comfort in an innings shortened to a maximum of 33 overs. EP, earlier, had struggled to 210 all out as they failed to bat out their 45 overs. The Natalians, who had a dismal first-class season, failing to qualify for the Super 8 stage, will meet Northerns Titans in the final at Kingsmead on Wednesday.Natal were set on their way by an 85-run opening partnership between Doug Watson and Ashraf Mall that all but put paid to the possibility of a Jumbos victory. The conditions undoubtedly favoured the home team with EP having to contend with a soggy ball and slippery run ups – Nantie Hayward bowled seven wides in his first over before the rain break, and then had Mall dropped at slip with his first ball after the interruption – but in the end the visitors were well beaten on the day.Mall had his life on 29 and went on to make 40 before he went tamely, steering Hayward straight down to Garnett Kruger at third man, but Gulam Bodi then produced a run-a-ball 32 to keep Natal going and with Watson standing firm for his fifth 50 of the competition, the Dolphins were seldom in trouble.Watson eventually made 56 to make him the leading run-scorer in the competition this summer and with Lance Klusener heaving it about as late afternoon sun finally broke through the clouds Natal got home in the penultimate over of the game. The EP innings began slowly, picked up in the middle as Dave Callaghan and Mark Benfield fashion half-centuries, and then collapsed at the end with the last five wickets falling for the addition of only eight runs.Natal, it must be said, bowled with far greater intelligence and control than had been the case on Sunday when EP stormed to 253 for two in 41.2 overs before the rain washed things out.Left-arm seamer Gary Gilder was brought into the Natal team for his first run in this extended semi and justified his selection inside the first eight overs by nipping out both EP openers, including Robin Peterson whose spirited hitting on Sunday seemed at one stage to have won the Jumbos a place in the final. There were relatively minor contributions from James Bryant (21) and Justin Kemp (27) before Callaghan came in to make a thoughtful 63 and Benfield crunched out 51 off 43 balls. But both managed to get out just when EP needed to push on. Benfield holed out to deep square leg off Bodi, but, more crucially, Shaun Pollock ran Callaghan out with a direct hit in the 41st over to prompt the lower order collapse. It was, perhaps, the key moment in the match. Had Callaghan stayed through until the end, EP might have totalled around 240, but instead they contrived to get themselves out with eight balls still unbowled. From that moment on, the visitors either had to bowl brilliantly or look to the heavens for assistance. Neither eventuality was forthcoming.

Zaheer Khan bowls Baroda to Ranji Trophy glory

Zaheer Khan delivered when it mattered most, picking up five wicketsfor just 16 runs on the final day to bowl Railways out for 201

Santhosh S23-Apr-2001Zaheer Khan delivered when it mattered most, picking up five wicketsfor just 16 runs on the final day to bowl Railways out for 201. Barodawon by 21 runs and took the Ranji Trophy for the fifth time since itsinception. Railways wilted under pressure to lose the match afterbeing in the driver’s seat for the best part of the contest, in thefinal played at Gujarat State Fertilizer Corporation Ground, Baroda,on Monday.Baroda had to dismiss the remaining six Railways wickets to take theRanji Trophy. Railways had their eyes set on knocking off the required132 runs to win. Without the services of Rakesh Patel, who is injured,Baroda had to rely on Zaheer Khan and he did not disappoint. Resumingon their overnight score of 91/4, Yere Goud (20) was given out, caughtbehind off the bowling of Zaheer Khan in the third over of the day.Goud’s bat was nowhere near the ball as the TV replays suggested.Railways were soon reduced to 107/6, when S Khanolkar (3) was trappedin front of the wicket by Khan. SV Wankhede and Santosh Sahu added 83runs for the seventh wicket, as they went about sweeping the spinnersValmik Buch and Bhoite to the leg side. Runs kept flowing as the twobatsmen kept playing across the line.Railways were 33 runs away from victory with four wickets in hand. Adesperate Jacob Martin had to call upon Zaheer Khan to deliver theimpossible. In the space of 26 balls Railways lost the remainingwickets; Sahu (42) was brilliantly caught by Martin off the bowling ofKhan.Murali Kartik who played a resilient knock in the first innings cameout to bat. He was adjudged caught behind off Bhoite after making justtwo runs. A visibly dejected Kartik had a few words of dissent andtook a wild swing with his bat at the stumps. The umpire had to callhim back and reprimand him. Kartik who has been in trouble for hiserratic behaviour will certainly be reported to the BCCI.Kulamani Parida (0) was caught by Buch at second slip off a ZaheerKhan bouncer. Parida was injured in the first innings when he was hitby a beamer from Khan and that must have been playing in his mind ashe took evasive action. The ball seemed to have brushed his gloves onits way to the fielder. It was a close call and as luck would have it,Baroda got the benefit of the doubt. The end came without a trace of doubt, Wankhede managing to get aninside edge onto his off stump for Khan’s fifth wicket of the morning. There was so much jubilation all around as the home crowd ran onto theground to celebrate a great victory. Baroda has had a good season andthere is nothing like winning India’s premier domestic championship, the Ranji Trophy.

O Cuca confiou em me bancar no início.

Primeiro eu penso no Palmeiras.

Liverpool: Fans react to Curtis Jones update

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been nominated for the 2021 European Golden Boy Award, as reported by The Liverpool Echo.

Enjoying an outstanding 2020/21 season, the 20-year-old registered nine goal contributions from 34 fixtures in all competitions; four goals and five assists [Transfermarkt].

The playmaker joins England internationals Bukayo Saka, Mason Greenwood and Jude Bellingham on the 100-man shortlist for the accolade [Liverpool Echo].

The award was founded by world-renowned Italian sport newspaper Tuttosport, whilst journalists across continental media outlets such as Bild, L’Equipe and A Bola will come together to announce an eventual victor [Liverpool Echo].

Fellow Red Neco Williams made a 40-man select for the prize last year, however the Welshman has not been selected as a 2021 candidate [This is Anfield].

As you can imagine, loads of Liverpool diehards took to Twitter to summarize their feelings upon hearing about these latest developments.

Liverpool fans react:

Replying to Liverpool outlet Anfield Watch, here is what some Reds fans had to say about the latest news, with many seemingly stunned that their local lad has made the list:

Southampton missed out on Tielemans

Former Southampton sporting director Les Reed has confirmed that Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans was once on the Saints’ radar and judging by his superb performances with Leicester City in recent seasons, it seems clear that it was a poor decision by the South Coast club not to pursue their interest in the Belgian any further.

Reed revealed in an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern that Tielemans was one of a number of current Leicester City players that was on Southampton’s transfer radar during his time with the club.

The Belgium international initially joined the Foxes on loan in January 2019 and after an impressive second half of the season, he joined Brendan Rodgers’ side in a club-record deal worth £40m.

In his time at the King Power Stadium, the 24-year-old has made 108 appearances, contributing 17 goals and 19 assists, which included a stunning effort in the FA Cup Final last season, whilst he has also established himself as a regular in Roberto Martinez’s Belgium side.

His performances have reportedly caught the eye of Liverpool and the Merseyside club could make an approach for the 24-year-old in the current summer transfer window, especially after they pipped Leicester City to a Champions League spot in the Premier League last season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Therefore, it seems clear that Southampton should have worked harder to bring in Tielemans back when they were interested in him, as he could have been an excellent player for the South Coast club.

You could certainly argue that Tielemans has been just as good as Saints captain James Ward-Prowse last season, as his 7.09 average rating from WhoScored in the Premier League was slightly better than the Englishman’s 7.07 average rating, and having two players of such quality in the middle of the park would have been brilliant for Southampton.

The Leicester City man would have been a superb signing by Southampton and fans should be frustrated that the club didn’t do more to bring him to St Mary’s back when they were interested in him.
