Lankans sail into the Sharjah Cup final

SHARJAH–Sri Lanka notched another win, their third out of four in this event, to be the first to make it to the final of this Sharjah Cup 2002, leaving Pakistan and New Zealand to slug it out for the other berth today

Agha Akbar14-Apr-2002SHARJAH–Sri Lanka notched another win, their third out of four in this event, to be the first to make it to the final of this Sharjah Cup 2002, leaving Pakistan and New Zealand to slug it out for the other berth today. And, with both having a win apiece under their belt, the game is indeed a knock-out: the winner lives to fight for the title, and the loser goes home. In case it is New Zealand, they cross over the Persian Gulf to Pakistan for their rescheduled one-day and Test rubber, in that order.Having set them 244 for victory, Sri Lanka allowed New Zealand only 197 for nine wickets, winning the fixture comfortably by 46 runs. The Lankans were keen to win this tie so that their qualifying for the final did not linger unduly for another day. Sharp in bowling and even sharper in the field, once they had reduced the Black Caps to 38 for three were not willing to give anything away. They had wrested control, more than that, a vise-like hold, and they were in no mood to concede an inch. Only Kumar Sangakkara, keeping wickets missed a stumping and a run-out, but even those reprieves fell in the realm of too little to save the day for the Kiwis. As the game entered the home stretch, the final 10 overs, the Kiwis were 93 runs adrift, the asking rate 9.3, and Jacob Oram, who had already hit Kumar Dharmasena for a straight six, and James Franklin were on the crease. It really was beyond them to plunder the runs at this rate against an attack that is very good at prising out better-endowed opposition. Oram clouted Dharmasena over long on but the bowler had his revenge next ball by having him stumped. Franklin and Tuffey fooled around for a while, but Arnold bowled the latter and Franklin stayed on with Butler to save the ignominy of getting all-out.From the word go, the Kiwis really made a mess of their chase, and were reduced to 38 for three. Chaminda Vaas struck first ball, to have Mathew Horne so plumb in front that umpire Venkatraghavan had his finger up as soon as the bowler turned around to raise his hands in appeal.Out of sorts, Nathan Astle (14, 26 balls, 2 fours) made his best score of this tournament so far before Vaas had him brilliantly caught and bowled. The disaster was compounded when Nuwan Zoysa’s appeal for leg before against Chris Harris was upheld. The most seasoned Black Caps pair, Stephen Fleming and Craig McMillan found the going tough. McMillan took a boundary apiece from Kumar Dharmasena and Upul Chandana. But to make an already near irretrievable situation worse, Fleming got himself bowled round his legs off Dharmasena.Muralitharan was finally brought into the attack as late as the 25th over. He conceded one and two in the first and second overs of his spell, but as Mathew Sinclair and Fleming went after him.He conceded 11 in his third, the 29th over, which also saw Black Caps raise the 100 of their innings, 101 off 179 deliveries.Next over, the 30th, McMillan clouted Jayasuriya for a glorious six straight on to the sight screen first ball to take another 10 runs from the over. And Jayasuriya’s next over too went for 11 runs, as McMillan contemptuously thumped him to the long-on fence and then guided him to deep fine leg for another boundary. The Kiwi innings seemed to be gaining a fluency of sorts, but it was too good to last. In Muralitharan’s next over, two wickets fell to make any hopes of revival a remote possibility. Sinclair, who had made 56 for the fifth wicket with McMillan, was run out courtesy a ferocious throw by Jayasuriya and Styris was leg before Muralitharan.McMillan was snared into a false shot by Muralitharan and with Atapattu making no mistake, at 138 for seven, the writing was on the wall for the Kiwis.Earlier, the fact that the Lankans managed just 243 after being rather well placed at 155 two in the 30th over was a tribute to the Black Caps resilience in the field and some imaginative captaincy.Having lost skipper Sanath Jayasuriya, leg before to Daryl Tuffey third ball after winning the toss and electing to bat first, Sri Lanka recovered quite considerably, as Marvan Atapattu (82, 94 deliveries, 12 fours) and Kumar Sangakkara (50, 64 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) made 114 runs.It was Atapattu who took the fight to the Kiwis, by stroking the ball sweetly for fours, mostly in front of the wicket, mostly straight as an arrow in copybook fashion. Sangakkara, having started with a six off James Franklin settled down to play second fiddle to Atapattu, until late in the innings when he raced to his 50 with three fours in as many overs on the off side, only to get out immediately after reaching his fifty.Atapattu, who scored his third score of 50-plus on the trot, and Mahela Jayawardene continued scoring in singles and twos, until they tore into Franklin, hitting him for two boundaries apiece to gather 18 runs off the over. At this point things seemed to be getting out of hand, when seamer Ian Butler struck twice, removing Atapattu and Arnold in the same over. Harris delivered another blow, by getting Tillekeratne Dilshan caught at the wicket by Sinclair.Three wickets in the space of 20 deliveries for the addition of 12 runs was a collapse from which the Lankans recovered but never fully.Jayawardene (39 runs, 55 balls, 3 fours) soldiered on in association with Upul Chandana (21, 36 balls, 1 four), but another three wickets fell in a bunch. Harris claimed Jayawardene’s wicket, and from 5 for 196, the Lankans again plunged to 208 for eight within the space of 21 balls.Chaminda Vaas, dropped at one by Sinclair off Jacob Oram, scored a run a ball 20 with the help of one four to rally the tail around him and take the total to a respectable 243.

Josh Griffiths tipped to join Portsmouth

West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths would be a ‘great signing’ for Portsmouth this summer, according to former Pompey midfielder David Norris.

The Lowdown: Griffiths linked with Pompey move

The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb 2020/21 season, shining on loan at Cheltenham Town and helping them finish the League Two campaign as champions.

Griffiths started 44 of their 46 league matches, proving to be an influential figure and being hailed as ‘brilliant’ by manager Michael Duff.

The youngster has been linked with a move to Pompey this summer as Danny Cowley looks to steer his side into the Championship.

The Latest: Norris keen on goalkeeper signing

Speaking to Football League World, Norris talked up the idea of Griffiths moving to Fratton Park, saying that he could be a great addition for the League One side. The 40-year-old stated:

“I think he’d be a great signing, Cheltenham had a very good defensive record when he was there.

“They kept a lot of clean sheets with him in the team, you know, over 20 clean sheets. So they obviously had a decent keeper in their side, so I think that would be a good signing for the club to make.”

The Verdict: Potential great addition

Griffiths seems to be a wonderful prospect, already thriving at such a young age in a position where players can often peak into their 30s.

He could be an exciting signing by Pompey if they pull it off, replacing Craig MacGillivray after his move to Charlton Athletic and aiding a hopeful promotion push.

Griffiths is still only a teenager and the step up to League One could be significant at this stage in his career, but he showed such confidence at Cheltenham that this seems the next natural step for him.

In other news, Norris has called for one player to return to Portsmouth this summer. Find out who it is here.

Everton interested in Mattia De Sciglio

With no manager in place at Goodison Park, it’s particularly difficult to envisage how this transfer window pans out for Everton.

Rafa Benitez is the favourite for the job and is on the verge of becoming the new boss. The sooner he arrives, the quicker they can bring in new faces.

What’s the word?

One area of the squad the Toffees look keen on improving is in defence.

Merih Demiral is on their radar, a player who was rather disappointing for Turkey at Euro 2020.

Another experienced international Everton have now been linked with a move for is Mattia De Sciglio.

He spent last term on loan at Lyon but he’s now back at Juventus and searching for the exit door again.

Italian media suggest a fee of £5m could prise him away from Turin, with the Merseyside club believed to be a suitor.

Should they sign him?

With Seamus Coleman now in the final year of his contract at Goodison Park, it would be a wise idea for Everton to sign a new full-back.

De Sciglio’s career hasn’t quite turned out in the way it was hoped when he first came through the ranks but he’d still be a valuable signing for the Merseyside club.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

As he was breaking onto the scene, the great Italian defender Paolo Maldini suggested he could have a career like his: “I think De Sciglio can follow a similar path to me at Milan. Things aren’t going too well at the moment, but he can have a career like mine.”

At the age of 28, that ship has sailed but the £97k-per-week earner is a particularly versatile player.

Last term, the Juventus defender played at left-back, in the centre of defence and at right-back. Everton already have a like-minded player in Ben Godfrey who was a huge success under Carlo Ancelotti in his first term at Goodison.

He is a different age to De Sciglio but it proves how valuable it is to have a defensively versatile player in their ranks.

Described as a player with “electric feet” by Alberigo Evani, the defender is two-footed and strong in the tackle. During the course of his career, he’s averaged 1.8 tackles per game; a higher tally than Coleman.

The arrival of the Italian, therefore, could put the final nail in the coffin of the captain’s Everton stay.

Powell and Thomas lead Glamorgan to another win

Glamorgan recorded the second win of their pre-season tour to Cape Town, beating a Western Province Academy XI by four wickets in a 50 overs contestat Uitsig yesterday

Andrew Hignell09-Apr-2002Glamorgan recorded the second win of their pre-season tour to Cape Town, beating a Western Province Academy XI by four wickets in a 50 overs contestat Uitsig yesterday. The Welsh side were indebted to Mike Powell and Darren Thomas who shared a blistering partnership of 172 runs in a mere 19 overs, and all after Glamorgan, who had rested Steve James and David Hemp, had slumped to 67-6 chasing 237 to beat the Academy side that contained some of the leading young players in the Cape. Both Thomas and Powell hit rapid half-centuries, with Powell reaching 50 off 48balls, whilst Thomas smashed 50 from just 34 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 6 fours. Thomas finished unbeaten on 73, with Powell 86* as the county reached their target with 12.5 overs to spare.Earlier in the day, Robert Croft had been the pick of the Glamorgan bowling, taking 2-21 from his 10 overs. Dav keen to play Murali, but Sanath wary

Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore said he was keen to play champion off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan in the second cricket Test against England beginning at Edgbaston here on Thursday, but skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was however wary of exposing his trump

Saadi Thawfeeq29-May-2002Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore said he was keen to play champion off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan in the second cricket Test against England beginning at Edgbaston here on Thursday, but skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was however wary of exposing his trump card too early from injury.”Ideally we like to play everyone who is 100 percent fit. But there are occasions that can come up when players can do more than a decent job when they are not 100 percent fit, as long as everyone knows the boundaries and limitations,” said Whatmore today as his team was confined to indoor net sessions here because of bad weather. “In certain instances the risks are greater. In special sort of circumstances, the likes of which exists with Murali at the moment. That full 100 percent effort that he generally generates on the ball when he delivers, to me is as I see it, is not 100 percent. But the ball behaves abnormally and will still cause some problems,” he said.”There are a number of angles you have to consider before a decision is made. You’ve got to understand what he can and what he can’t do basically with the bat and in the field. You can see what he can do at the nets because he is performing the skills. But in terms of his fielding you know what he is like. He’s got no regard for his body at times. In his batting, he has to lift the bat with the left hand. There are a few things to cover before a decision is made,” Whatmore said.Whatmore said that Muralitharan has been bowling in the nets today as he has been over the past four to five days.”He is showing that he can run up and bowl and he’s still got a few tricks as you see the different varieties of deliveries that he’s got. He is not 100 percent fit, but he is building up to that and if he is selected in this Test match, it will be a calculated decision the selectors will have to take,” said Whatmore.Skipper Jayasuriya said: “It all depends on how Murali feels. We don’t know what his injury is like and what pains he is going through. We want him to play. As a captain I would love to play Murali, but if something happens to him, he will be out for another 3-4 months. We can’t take that chance”.”I would rate Murali’s chances of playing as still 50-50. He is still working hard with Alex (Kountouri). It all depends on what the doctors have told Alex and how he improves in his physical therapy. Murali hasn’t bowled for the last eight weeks and he needs a lot of practice also. Alex and Murali will have to talk with each other and decide. We can’t come to a conclusion at the moment. We will be knowing by tomorrow evening whether he will be playing or not. It is very unlikely, but you know,” said Jayasuriya.Muralitharan (30) has not bowled in a match since he injured his left shoulder while fielding in the Sharjah Cup final against Pakistan at Sharjah six weeks ago. He underwent treatment in Australia under the supervision of Dr. David Young and joined the Sri Lanka team in England a week ago. Since then he has got the sling which held his injured arm in place removed and has been working on his arm with Kountouri to try and regain full fitness.
