Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that he’s surprised Crystal Palace offered Christian Benteke a new contract – calling the striker a “Championship player”.

The Belgian has scored just 33 times in five seasons since making the £27m switch from Liverpool, but clearly did enough to convince the Palace hierarchy to offer him another deal.

10 of those came in the Premier League last season as Benteke ended the campaign in red hot form, but he only managed just six in 75 appearances in all competitions in the three years before 2020-21.

He scored six times in his final 10 league outings, including four on the bounce – with Tottenham, Chelsea, and Arsenal three of his victims.

However, Bent isn’t convinced by the £120,000-per-week striker, who made just one substitute appearance for Belgium at the European Championships.

He told Football FanCast:

“He was massive at Villa as a young player, but I don’t think he scores enough goals. Hold-up play? I’m not too sure. I don’t think Benteke would be in my starting XI, squad player yes.

“He’s done well for his country, but he’s not consistent enough and I didn’t think he would be signing a new contract. For me, he’s a Championship player at best.”

Benteke’s five years with Crystal Palace have been strange to say the least. His four goals in as many games gave everyone a timely reminder of his capability, but his form generally in recent seasons has simply not been good enough.

Isso depende do que o Jair pensa de cada jogo. Me sinto bem como terceiro ou quarto homem do meio-campo. Cabe ao técnico escolher o que for melhor – completou João Paulo.

Na ausência de Montillo, o meia acabou sendo titular na classificação sofrida contra o Olimpia-PAR, nos pênaltis, pela Libertadores. João Paulo chegou no Botafogo depois de se destacar por duas temporadas com a camisa do Santa Cruz. O Glorioso pagou ao time pernambucano R$ 3 milhões pelo seu passe.

قد يوافق نادي ريال مدريد على طلب قائده البرازيلي، مارسيلو، بشأن تمديد تعاقده مع النادي الملكي.

مارسيلو كان انضم إلى ريال مدريد في شتاء عام 2007، قادمًا من فلومينينسي البرازيلي، وبعد أقل من موسم واحد، أصبح أحد الأعمدة الرئيسية مع اللوس بلانكوس، وعقده ينتهي في 30 يونيو 2022.

مارسيلو كان خرج في تصريحات بعد تتويج ريال مدريد بلقب الدوري الإسباني، مؤكدًا أنه لا يريد الرحيل هذا الموسم ويرغب في الاستمرار لفترة أطول، بل يريد البقاء حتى يبلغ من العمر 50 عامًا.

وقالت صحيفة “موندو ديبورتيفو” الإسبانية، إن ريال مدريد يدرس بجدية تمديد عقد مارسيلو لموسم آخر.

وذكرت الصحيفة أن مارسيلو يريد الاستمرار لعدة أسباب، إذ يريد مواصلة اللعب ولا يرغب في الاعتزال، كما يريد الاستمرار في الاقتراب من اللعب مع ابنه إنزو، الذي فاز بلقب الدوري الإسباني في أكاديمية ريال مدريد.

ريال مدريد كان يخطط لعرض منصب إداري على مارسيلو، مثل إيكر كاسياس، روبرتو كارلوس، وراؤول جونزاليس، ولكن النادي يرى أنه من المنطقي أن يستمر في اللعب أيضًا لموسم آخر على الأقل.

وأوضحت الصحيفة إن ريال مدريد سيعرض على مارسيلو البقاء لموسم آخر، ليظل مع الملكي حتى نهاية 2022/2023.

يُذكر أن مارسيلو أصبح الأكثر حصولًا على الألقاب في تاريخ ريال مدريد، بـ24 لقبًا، متخطيًا أسطورة النادي خينتو.

Kieran Maguire has given his reaction to the statement which was released by Newcastle United on their upcoming arbitration case against the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Newcastle statement

The St James’ Park club released a statement on their official website citing the need for ‘transparency and fairness in football governance’.

They also called for the arbitration process to be made public, and consortium member Amanda Staveley asked for the same when speaking to Sky Sports recently.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, football finance expert Maguire has claimed that the statement should not make a difference on the results of the arbitration hearing, and even went as far as to accuse Newcastle owner Mike Ashley of being a ‘hypocrite’. He said:

“It shouldn’t make any difference on the case itself, in theory.

“The people making the final decision are legal professionals and you’d expect them to be objective.

“But what I think Staveley and Ashley are trying to do is get populist support. They hope that this will mean the pressure’s on the people making that final decision.

“They’ll know that every word and every utterance is going to be scrutinised by Newcastle’s fanbase.

“Mike Ashley is a hypocrite because Newcastle are the only club in the Premier League not to publish anything to do with their accounts. That doesn’t exactly scream transparency.”

The Verdict: Transparency needed

While Ashley may be a ‘hypocrite’ for calling for transparency when, as Maguire references, they are the only team in the Premier League yet to publish anything on their accounts, there is no doubt that transparency is still needed ahead of the arbitration proceedings.

The Toon Army have largely been kept in the dark until now with regards to the takeover, and they deserve to know what exactly is going on in their club.

Making the arbitration public will show exactly why the takeover may or may not be rejected, and it would also give valuable insight from the Premier League into their decision.

Given the confidence of both parties in getting a positive result, the top flight should also be calling for the process to be made public, assuming that they have nothing to hide.

No wonder there’s little time for the regulars to get involved in county cricket any more. Not that it affects us at Middlesex just now because we’re not blessed with anyone in the England team.I thought it was a top performance by the lads at Edgbaston. They did absolutely everything that was asked of them to go one-nil up in the series. Andrew Caddick and Matthew Hoggard setting it up with the ball, Graham Thorpe, Marcus Trescothick and Mark Butcher doing what was required with the bat – well played the lefties – and that was that. Simple game, cricket, when you stick a big score on the board and bowl the other side out twice cheaply!It might have been a bit of a lack-lustre performance at Lord’s, but in Birmingham it was a good comeback. They got stuck in and did the business. It’s got to boost the confidence going to Old Trafford with a draw or a win in their sights to take the series.Talking of confidence, I was interested to come across the fact that Matthew Hoggard had a long chat with the captain just before the Test – admitting that he was suffering some sort of crisis of confidence. I don’t think people realise that bowlers can suffer in that way. As always in this game, the attention is on the batsmen. If the poor dears are not in top nick, everyone rallies round to get them through it. Don’t forget that bowlers need confidence too and it’s not just a case of running up, letting go of the thing and expecting wickets to fall.Sometimes you get on flat wickets, like Lord’s was, and you’re feeling good. Then you go out there and they get a load of runs against you and you wonder how you’re ever going to get any success again. It happens, and when those days do come along all you can do is put it in good areas (even if the batsman then hits the thing out of that area – sometimes even out of the district!), it’s coming out well but it’s just one of those days. That’s when you have to believe in your own ability in the knowledge that when it is your day, you have to make the most of it and pick up your wickets.It happens with the batsmen too. You are hitting the ball well – I’m led to believe – and yet you get out. Then one day you get a scratchy fifty and off you go again. These crises of confidence do come along and it’s a question of how you deal with them. Your team-mates, the captain and the coaching staff have to say “We believe in you; you believe in yourself.”It will be interesting to see how the wicket plays over five days at Old Trafford. It’s Muralitharan’s adopted home ground, but I’m sure they won’t prepare a big turner for him. I reckon it will be fairly flat with a bit of bounce and a bit of pace. England’s job? That’s easy. Keep the same disciplines we had at Edgbaston with some good, steady cricket. Get runs on the board in the first innings and bowl one side of the wicket. If the win comes along, that’s great. We win the series two-nil. If it doesn’t because there’s a bit of rain around, well, let’s make sure we nick the draw and still win the series.One thing I would say to the bowlers. If the wicket turns out to be a really flat one and you’re hot and bothered because a few decisions haven’t gone your way and you’ve been flayed round the park, don’t snatch your cap from the umpire after you’ve bowled the last ball of the day and wander off having a bit of a chunter to yourself. If you do, you might get yourself on a dissent charge. I was given a right old telling off, I can tell you, after our game against Durham on the flattest pitch you will ever see. But now I’ve apologised and it’s all in the past. I’ll learn. One day. Probably.

A suspeita de envolvimento de seus integrantes na morte do botafoguense Diogo Silva dos Santos, antes do jogo entre Flamengo e Botafogo, pode custar caro à organizada Torcida Jovem Fla. Em entrevista divulgada nesta sexta-feira no blog de Mauro Cezar Pereira, na ESPN, o Major Silvio Luiz, comandante do Gepe (Grupamento Especial de Policiamento em Estádios da Polícia Militar do Rio de Janeiro), revelou que exigirá o banimento da facção dos estádios por um ano.

– Da minha parte será feito o pedido ao Juizado do Torcedor.

Segundo o Major, após a solicitação ser feita, haverá uma análise judicial para a punição ser sacramentada:

– Essa punição de afastamento dos membros é feita por intermédio de decisão judicial. Somente o juizado do torcedor aplica, para lá fazermos o encaminhamento e também para o Ministério Público.

Caso a decisão seja acatada por decisão judicial, haverá uma restrição drástica à organizada; criada em homenagem ao Flamengo. Além de não poder entrar em campo com camisas, faixas e bandeiras referentes à facção, os associados da TJF estarão impedidos de ir a jogos.

Na quinta-feira, uma megaoperação culminou na prisão de cinco suspeitos de envolvimento na morte de Diogo Silva dos Santos, de 28 anos. Outros três suspeitos que tiveram prisão decretada estão foragidos. Ainda houve outros 12 mandados de prisão temporária.

O botafoguense Diogo Silva dos Santos morreu em 12 de fevereiro, nos arredores do Estádio Nilton Santos, após ser golpeado com um espeto de churrasco.

Rex Clementine27-Jul-2002Muttiah Muralitharan will face a disciplinary inquiry conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) next week after remarks made in a recent live television chat show.An interim committee member confirmed Friday that Muralitharan will face the inquiry: “We were to have the inquiry this evening (Friday), but had to put it off due to a request from Mr. Muralitharan who said he had a private function to attend.”The inquiry will now take place next week at the cricket board headquarters.Cricket board chairman Hemaka Amarasuriya, chief executive Anura Tennakoon, as well as interim committee members Guy de Alwis, Lawrence Amarasena and Ranil Abeynaike will attend the inquiry.”We brought down a tape from the television station which aired the interview and have previewed his remarks,” said the interim member.Muralitharan spoke about a wide range of issues, criticising the cricket administration, the role of businessmen in Sri Lankan cricket and the domestic cricket scene.The BCCSL had given permission to Muralitharan to appear on the show, which was also attended by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga, but had expected him to talk only about his recovery from injury and other cricketing matters.If found guilty Muralitharan could either face a suspension or a fine.Following the interview, sports minister Johnston Fernando slapped a media ban on all cricketers and board officials until the 2003 World Cup.

أكد وليد الركراكي المدير الفني لنادي الوداد المغربي أنه لن يعلق على الأزمة المثارة بشأن ملعب نهائي دوري أبطال إفريقيا، لأن فريقه لم يحسم التأهل من المربع الذهبي حتى الآن.

ويستعد الوداد لمواجهة بترو أتليتيكو الأنجولي غدًا الجمعة على مركب محمد الخامس، في إطار منافسات جولة الإياب من نصف نهائي دوري الأبطال.

وكان الاتحاد الإفريقي لكرة القدم قد أعلن عن استضافة مركب محمد الخامس لمباراة نهائي دوري الأبطال في الموسم الحالي وذلك للعام الثاني على التوالي.

واعترض الأهلي على قرار الاتحاد الإفريقي وطالب بإقامة المباراة على ملعب محايد، إرساءً لمبدأ تكافؤ الفرص بين الفرق المتنافسة.

وأضاف مدرب الوداد: “هناك بعض الأندية لا تحترم خصومها، بالحديث عن النهائي الذي لم نصل له بعد، كل الفرق لازالت تنافس على حظوظها في التأهل للمشهد الختامي”.

واختم حديثه قائلًا: “الأندية الكبيرة تحترم منافسيها، وبما أننا لم نحسم التأهل بعد، فلن أتحدث عن أي شيء خارج إطار مباراتنا غدًا”.

وكان الوداد المغربي قد فاز على بترو أتليتيكو في جولة الذهاب بثلاثة أهداف مقابل هدف، فيما انتصر الأهلي على وفاق سطيف برباعية نظيفة.
