Jimmy Maher to replace injured Damien Martyn

Australia have been forced to make a change ahead of their ICC Champions Trophy clash against Bangladesh on Thursday

Staff Reporter18-Sep-2002Australia have been forced to make a change ahead of their ICC Champions Trophy clash against Bangladesh on Thursday. Jimmy Maher takes the place of Damien Martyn, who suffered a hip injury while top-scoring with 73 in Australia’s 164-run win over New Zealand on Sunday.Australia are well placed to reach the semi final, as beating Bangladesh remains only a formality for this strong Aussie side. Skipper Ricky Ponting is extremely hopeful of having Martyn’s services for the semi final game to be played on September 27, where their opponents will be the host nation Sri Lanka.”Damien picked up a slight strain in his hip while batting," said captain Ricky Ponting. "He tried to have a run about yesterday but aggravated it so he stayed at the hotel today and we’ll see if he can get over it with the semi-finals coming up.”Maher’s inclusion is the only change to Australia’s line-up from their opening match. Maher is expected to bat at six, allowing Michael Bevan to take Martyn’s place at number four.”Michael’s not had much batting and that’s why he’s at four,” said Ponting. “It would be nice if everyone in the batting and bowling line-up gets the chance for another solid hit-out.”Ponting admitted he knew little about Bangladesh, who have won only three one-day internationals in their history.”We’ll attack the Bangladesh game in exactly the same way as we did the New Zealand game,” he said.”We don’t know that much about them and we had a fairly short team meeting yesterday, but we are probably focusing more on what we have to worry about rather than them at the moment.”If we do the basics of one-day cricket well then everything else should look after itself,” Ponting added. The Australian team, who will remain in Colombo after the tournament for the first test of a three-match series against Pakistan, are set to spend the weekend in the nearby Maldives islands.”It looks a nice place so we are planning to get away from cricket for a few days, take it easy then come back refreshed,” said Ponting.Bangladesh, who go into the game with no injury concerns, have decided to drop 18 year-old batsman Mohammad Ashraful.Ashraful made a name for himself when he scored 114 against Sri Lanka on his Test debut to become the youngest ever Test centurion. He also scored 75 against Sri Lanka in a Test this year, but those two innings are his only scores over 50 in seven tests and seven one-day internationals.”We are giving him a break because he is not getting any runs,” team manager A.S.M. Faruque told reporters on Wednesday. Batsman Javed Omar, who missed the recent test and one-day tour of Sri Lanka with a knee injury, returns to the side. Young fast bowler Talha Jubair and off-spinner Fahim Muntasir are the others players left out from their squad of 14.Teams:Australia:Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Bevan, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie, Matthew Hayden, Brett Lee, Darren Lehmann, Jimmy Maher, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Shane Watson.Bangladesh:Khaled Mashud (captain), Al-Sahariar, Tapash Baishya, Habibul Bashar, Mazharul Haque, Tushar Imran, Manjural Islam, Alok Kapali, Khaled Mahmud, Javed Omar, Mohammad Rafique.Umpires: Asoka de Silva and Russell Tiffin.Third umpire: Srinivas Venkataraghavan, fourth umpire Steve Bucknor. Liverpool fans bemoan Jarrod Bowen rumour

Some Liverpool supporters have been reacting negatively to a rumour claiming the Reds could sign West Ham winger Jarrod Bown this summer.

The Reds may be on the lookout for another attacking addition in the coming weeks, as Jurgen Klopp aims to add depth to his squad.

Another wide player could come in and provide competition for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota, with both Salah and Mane expected to miss around a month of action when AFCON kicks off in early 2022.

Estamos no caminho certo – disse.

Paul Stewart thinks Jack Grealish will end up at City!

Former Manchester City player Paul Stewart thinks that Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish will end up at Manchester City.

The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that City were set to make an opening bid worth £75m plus add-ons, but Villa don’t want to sell Grealish unless their valuation of £100m is met.

Grealish scored seven goals and created 12 in all competitions last season for Aston Villa, before being picked for England’s Euro 2020 squad, where he put in a string of good performances and got two more assists.

With plenty of speculation linking Grealish to Manchester City, Paul Stewart told The Transfer Tavern: “I’m a big fan of Jack, I wish he had played more at the Euros to be honest.

“We used him as sort of what we call an impact player, but I think he offers more than that, he retains the ball, he’s great on the ball and he draws players in and there’s very few players that have that ability.

“Gazza had the ability to draw players in which leaves spaces for other players and Jack’s one of the best in the Premiership at the moment doing that, he gets free-kicks and I think he was the most fouled player as well, so yeah I think he will end up at City as well.”

The Premier League Champions only bit of transfer business so far this summer, is Scott Carson signing a one-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Alongside the speculation about Jack Grealish, City are also linked with Tottenham striker Harry Kane, but journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that no fee has been agreed, with the only bid of £100m turned down by Spurs last month.

Rangers handed Gary Cahill boost

Rangers’ hopes of signing Gary Cahill this summer have been given a boost after he officially confirmed his exit from Crystal Palace, meaning that Steven Gerrard could bring him to Ibrox on a free transfer.

What’s the word?

The Sun claimed last month that Rangers were keen on adding the 35-year-old to their squad this summer and were willing to offer him a big wage in order to tempt him to a move north.

The centre-back has spent much of the past decade living in London after spells with Chelsea and Crystal Palace and he certainly shouldn’t be short of offers in England after his exit from the Eagles was confirmed.

Should Rangers sign Cahill?

Cahill would offer Gerrard a wealth of experience at the back and could well be tempted with a move to Rangers due to the Champions League football that could be on offer at Ibrox this season.

The veteran centre-back will be well known by Gerrard from their time playing together for England and whilst he might only be a short-term option from a playing perspective, he could perform a similar role to Jermain Defoe in the future by offering his defensive expertise as a coach in Gerrard’s side.

Although the 41-year-old manager already has the likes of Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Nikola Katic and Jack Simpson available as centre-back options in his side, the £1.35m-rated Cahill could be a leader for Rangers both on and off the pitch.

Former Palace boss Roy Hodgson lauded his leadership qualities last season, saying:

“He’s also brought us leadership qualities, he’s been very good leadership-wise. He’s the best type of leader; he’s the quiet leader people don’t see from Row Z in the stand. He’s the leader we see in training week to week.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Therefore, he could prove to be a very shrewd acquisition by Rangers this summer, so following the news that he is officially a free agent, Ross Wilson should definitely be looking to bring Cahill to Ibrox if his wage demands aren’t too excessive.

Horton and Sutcliffe give Lancashire the edge

Lancashire perhaps had slightly the better of a bread-and-butter opening day at Old Trafford against Nottinghamshire

Lancashire perhaps had slightly the better of a bread-and-butter opening day at Old Trafford, thanks to a determined and invaluable opening partnership of 109 between Paul Horton and Iain Sutcliffe when conditions were the most testing. They did not quite build as they might have done on such a good foundation, with three batsmen getting out after scoring good fifties, but a fourth in Steven Croft is still there, and his team will be looking for him to play the leading role in building a daunting total tomorrow.Lancashire won a toss they might have preferred to lose, given that swing was likely under an overcast sky. The pitch itself played soundly enough on the whole, giving some help to the bowlers, even Graeme Swann’s offspin on the first day, but not enough to interest the ECB pitch inspector, Mike Denness, who arrived by train from his home in Essex, after the previous championship match on this ground, against Durham, had finished before lunch on the third day.A minor curiosity in this match is that the two captains are both wicketkeepers: Chris Read, the official captain of Nottinghamshire, and Luke Sutton, standing in for the injured Lancashire skipper Stuart Law. The ball did indeed swing copiously at times, especially early on and especially when the medium-pacer Mark Ealham was using it. Ealham came into the action early on, as Charlie Shreck had difficulty finding his line from the Brian Statham End, although later he came back with better results from the Stretford End.The Lancashire openers, Horton and Sutcliffe, did a superb job for their team as they saw off the difficult overs with the shine still on the ball, and survived until after lunch in their team’s first century opening stand of the season in any competition. Inevitably there were a few plays-and-misses, but on the whole remarkably few errors, and they also managed to take advantage of loose deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking along.Ealham was the most difficult of the bowlers to face, swinging the ball considerably away from the right-hander and bowling a good line and length; with a little more pace, he may well have been lethal. Again, the openers handled him with great skill and judgement.Sutcliffe was the first to his fifty (91 balls), just after lunch, reaching it with one of his few errors, an edge that would have been a chance had third slip been in place, but instead flew between second slip and gully to the boundary. He then survived a very close lbw appeal against Ealham, before Horton reached his 50 (112 balls) – ironically also with a false stroke, an inside-edge that missed the off stump and shot to the left of the keeper to the boundary. Then came disaster for Lancashire, as Horton played a ball into the covers, called for a quick single, and a superb pick-up and direct hit from Adam Voges found the irate Sutcliffe just short of his crease. He made exactly 50 of the 109-run partnership. The balance of the match swung as Horton (64) fell to the swing of Ealham, well caught one-handed by Swann at slip, who then also caught a struggling Mal Loye (3) in the same position as he edged a rather desperate slash off Shreck. With Lou Vincent, clearly out of practice in his first first-class match of the year, bottom-edging a hook off Shreck to the keeper for 5, Lancashire slumped to 131 for 4 and the balance of the match had quite shifted. The situation did not faze ‘Faf’ du Plessis, the South African still undervalued by home supporters. He and Steven Croft began cautiously, but du Plessis grew in confidence and the pair gradually pulled their team out of the mire. They put on 84 together, but du Plessis was another whose valuable fifty (105 balls) was not converted into three figures; he flicked at an arm ball from Swann outside off stump and was caught by the keeper for 55.Croft appeared to be much slower, but in fact he had less of the strike. Just before the close he reached his fifty off 117 balls, and then survived a hard low catch to slip off the petulant Swann. Hard as the Notts bowlers tried, they could effect no further breakthroughs, and Croft survived to make an attempt tomorrow morning to reach the century he narrowly missed in his last match at Headingley.
