It's good that we never gave up – Bollinger

Australia are praying their final-session surge of seven wickets will motivate the batsmen into a significantly improved performance as they battle to avoid giving up their series lead.

Australia are praying their final-session surge of seven wickets will motivate the batsmen into a significantly improved performance as they battle to avoid giving up their series lead. Pakistan have dominated the first two days against a struggling home side and hold a 204-run advantage after finishing at a healthy 9 for 331.Doug Bollinger, the left-arm fast bowler, led the Australian charge by snatching three victims with the second new ball in an action-packed conclusion, but whether the hosts can remain in the game depends on the batsmen. “It was a good fight-back by the guys,” Bollinger said. “It was frustrating early, but they were two-for at tea and now they’re nine down. We just need to try and get the last one tomorrow and then get our batting hats on for a certain amount of time and get something to bowl at in the second innings.”Australia got into trouble when Ricky Ponting won the toss and batted on an unusual SCG surface, sliding to 127. Bollinger would not admit his personal feelings on Ponting’s decision, which has attracted heavy criticism, but said he had never seen an SCG pitch as green as this one. “It doesn’t bother me, it’s just the way it goes,” he said of Ponting’s call at the toss. “I can’t change anything now. It’s gone, we’re just worrying about the second innings now. Everyone’s really positive and we all back Ricky 110%.”While Bollinger said the pitch offered less movement on the second day, the bowlers still failed to take their opportunities before lunch as Salman Butt and Imran Farhat opened with a 109-run stand. There were regular plays and misses, although the fast men seemed reluctant to change to a consistent, fuller length.”It is frustrating, but it is the second day and we kind of knew that was going to happen,” Bollinger said. “We’ve just got to be as patient as they were [when we bat]. I think we bowled well and we fought really well and they’re nine down. It’s good that the guys never gave up.” Bollinger finished with 3 for 70 while Shane Watson, who succeeded against the slogging tail-enders, and Mitchell Johnson gained two wickets each.

Utd fans love Rangnick’s Van de Beek plan

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has decided to keep hold of Donny van de Beek during the January transfer window, according to The Mirror’s David McDonnell.

Van de Beek is reportedly ‘valued’ by the German coach and as such, he ‘will not be allowed to leave’ at the turn of the year.

Opportunities under Rangnick?

Rangnick has only taken charge of three games so far, but Van de Beek has been involved each time. He was handed brief run-outs in the 1-0 victories over Crystal Palace and Norwich City and played the full 90 minutes of United’s final Champions League group stage game against Young Boys.

The £22.5million-rated midfielder still has at least three and a half years left on his contract at Old Trafford, having joined from Ajax in 2019.

Van de Beek scored the final goal of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era in the 4-1 defeat away to Watford in November, and was hailed by ex-United player Owen Hargreaves for an ‘absolutely fabulous’ display.

Fan feed Utd Report relayed McDonnell’s claim, and here’s what supporters made of it, feeling he can recapture the type of form he enjoyed with Ajax, where he bagged 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 games.

Lugano

India dominate Sri Lanka on way to final

India’s best fielding performance in ODIs since the Champions Trophy in September last year set up their march to the final by way of a thumping win

India’s best fielding performance in ODIs since the Champions Trophy in September last year set up their march to the final by way of a thumping win. It wasn’t anything spectacular: half chances were taken and easy ones not missed, marking a big improvement on their recent fielding form. That, coupled with impressive bowling from Zaheer Khan and Amit Mishra, pulled Sri Lanka from an explosive start and restricted them to a paltry 213, which was chased down with 17.2 overs to spare.Zaheer was the pick of the bowlers, creating one half chance, and two fairly easy ones. At one stage his figures read 6-2-11-2. Sri Lanka had chosen to bat to allow their bowlers experience first-hand the wet conditions before the final, but it took resilient half-centuries from Kumar Sangakkara and Suraj Randiv to take the match far enough for the dew to set in.If Sangakkara and Randiv had to work hard, India’s runs came withpredictable ease: Gautam Gambhir scored his 19th half-century, DineshKarthik narrowly missed a fourth, and Virat Kohli made it to his fourth 50-plus score in his last five innings. But it was the first 11 overs of the match that staged the decisive action: two wicket-maidens, a wicket in the first over of new spells on three occasions and, between that, scintillating batting from Tillakaratne Dilshan. Coming back from a groin injury, Dilshan decided to do away with the running. He just drove, cut, pulled and late-cut eight boundaries in 17 deliveries to deflate any confidence India and Sudeep Tyagi would have gained from getting Upul Tharanga out in the first over. When Zaheer was brought on, in the sixth over, Dilshan had hit sevenboundaries in his 29, and Sri Lanka nine in their 38. He was pulled for a four second ball. The next ball took a thick edge, and was dying on Gambhir at fine gully before he snared it. Zaheer was pumped, and proceeded to bowl to a plan that worked just fine for him. Nothing to drive, a short cover in place, playing on the batsmen’s patience with the nagging accuracy. Mahela Jayawardene gave in, driving a ball that should not have been driven, and Kohli hung on to a sharp catch at short cover.Back came Sreesanth, whose first two overs had gone for 16, and ThilanSamaraweera walked across to a straight delivery and missed. Forty-two for 1 in 5.2 overs became 61 for 4 in 10.2. Soon Thilina Kandamby was run out, his fifth such dismissal out of 23. This time, though, he was sold a dummy by his captain, and was done in a by a smart throw from Karthik and quick backing-up by Zaheer.Thissara Perera, bounced and verbalised by Zaheer, tried to target Mishra, but Yuvraj Singh pulled out a diving catch at wide long-on, not his last contribution to Sri Lanka’s woes. Sangakkara, who had reached 32 off 42 by then, responded to Perera’s wicket by stepping out and hitting Sreesanth for four. He dominated a seventh-wicket partnership that took Sri Lanka closer to 150, but that’s when Yuvraj struck.Sangakkara had tried to make full use of every loose delivery that came his way, and also took calculated risks to keep the scoreboard from stagnating. But when he pulled a Yuvraj delivery which was too full, he had completed 43 innings without a century. Randiv and Thilan Thushara added 59 for the eighth wicket, a stand that saw Randiv through to his first List A fifty. But when the time came to press on, when they opted for the Powerplay in the 44th over, the tail came up short, and Sri Lanka were bundled out by Zaheer and Mishra, with four overs still to go.If there was any doubt to which way the match was going, Karthik and Gambhir removed it by taking 86 off the first 10 overs. Sri Lanka’s last chance of preventing India from getting the bonus point vanished when Dilshan and Tharanga dropped Gambhir on 41 and 44 respectively.Karthik did no harm to his chances of pushing for a place in further matches by following up a catch and a smart run-out with a dominating role in the opening partnership. He started off with a streaky boundary past the slip but soon got into the groove, punishing errors in both line and length. Anything straying on the pads was flicked through midwicket, and the ones short were cut through point and covers. Gambhir smartly assumed the second fiddle, capitalising on width when not milking singles.Once with Kohli, and with fields spread, the two got down to exploiting the gaps, running almost on intuition, scoring 60 off their 72-run partnership on foot. Upon Gambhir’s dismissal, Kohli asked for the Powerplay and quickly finished Sri Lanka off, accelerating from 33 off 48 to 71 off 68.

Liverpool fans slam Trent vs Leicester

Many Liverpool fans were left slamming the display of Trent Alexander-Arnold in their 1-0 loss away at Leicester City in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The right-back was partially at fault for the only goal of the game, as he let Ademola Lookman run off of him into the penalty box to tuck the ball away past Alisson at the near post.

It pretty much summed up his night, as he seemed to struggle like many other Reds throughout the match, losing out on all five of his duels, while he also failed to record a single shot on goal, dribble, blocked shot or tackle (SofaScore).

Alexander-Arnold was also unsuccessful with 11 of his crosses, and lost possession no fewer than on 32 separate occasions in total, by far the most out of any player on the pitch (SofaScore).

Liverpool fans slam Alexander-Arnold

These members of the Anfield faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one Red even going as far as claim that he was a ‘weak link’:

“Little or no mention of Trent for the Leicester goal. Mistakes happen and poor decisions are made in every game of football but laziness is inexcusable. He just refuses to track Lookman. Very poor.”

Credit: @ats31289

“Terrible performance tonight but let’s be honest Trent was awful for me one of his worst games in a #LFC shirt. He didn’t track his man or run back it’s as if he was injured he just didn’t seem bothered. Simply not good enough Klopp needs to have a strong word”

Credit: @razorsharpe09

“Absolutely awful display from Liverpool. Mane’s best is well behind him now, must look to upgrade. Firmino offered nothing coming on. Trent/Matip terrible in the lead up to the goal. City’s title to lose now.”

Credit: @corza_89

“Very poor night from Liverpool tonight. 6pts behind City is a big gap. Trent, Mane, Ox were all well off the pace. When the pen didn’t go in it felt like the night wasn’t going to be our night.”

Credit: @AndrewMort18

“We can talk about Mane and Henderson but they’ve been poor a lot. Salah and Trent absolutely stunk the place out. Leicester have no right to win with 10 players missing. Rubbish. Never seen subs make less of an impact.”

Credit: @GraemeKelly1

“Our inability to adapt to these games will cost us. Trent was targeted as our weak link and it’s proved fruitful as defensively he was poor this evening”

Source shares Handanovic to Spurs news

Taking to Twitter, journalist Rudy Galetti of Sportitalia TV has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Inter Milan shot stopper Samir Handanovic.

The Lowdown: Paratici eyeing new keepers?

Even though it seems as if Tottenham number one Hugo Lloris is likely to pen a one-year extension at the club, the future of number two Pierluigi Gollini is up in the air.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reports even claim the Lilywhites could decide to cut short his loan spell and send him back to Atalanta despite having the option to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of 2021/2022 (L’Eco di Bergamo via The Spurs Web).

This comes amid ‘concerns’ those within Tottenham have over Gollini’s fitness as they weigh up making his move a permanent one (The Athletic), but it appears Spurs may also have their eye on alternative options already.

The Latest: Galetti makes Handanovic claim…

Taking to Twitter, reporter Galetti has shared news on a brand new target for Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici as news emerges on Handanovic.

The 37-year-old’s contract at the San Siro expires this year, meaning he is now free to negotiate pre-contract summer moves with overseas clubs.

Tottenham have apparently taken an interest in doing this and Handanovic now ‘could arrive’ in England as a free agent later in 2022.

It is also believed that Conte has personally ‘asked for’ his former keeper as Spurs keep tabs.

The Verdict: Right call?

Arguably solid for a quick-fix, the 81-cap Slovenia international is a player Conte certainly knows well and played regularly during his time at Inter Milan.

Over the last two seasons, Handanovic has been a mainstay in the Nerazzurri starting line up but came under-fire for some of his unreliable performances near the end of 2021.

He has, however, stood out with brilliant performances as well since then and his experience working under Conte could be of real benefit to Tottenham.

A seasoned and experienced shot stopper with plenty of time at the top level, he has also been called a ‘monster’ by his goalkeeping teammate Michele Di Gregorio, currently on loan at Serie B side Monza.

On a free deal, Handanovic certainly shouldn’t be dismissed as an option should Gollini leave.

Daren Powell withdraws from Jamaica squad

The West Indies fast bowler has withdrawn from the Jamaica squad for the remainder of the regional first-class season

Dimming hopes of a recall to the national setup could have also contributed towards Daren Powell’s decision•AFP

West Indies fast bowler Daren Powell has withdrawn from Jamaica’s squad for the rest of the regional first-class season, according to Nehemiah Perry, the Jamaica Cricket Association’s chairman of selectors. Powell, who has managed just two wickets in two matches at 73.00 in the tournament so far, called Perry and cited “personal reasons” behind his decision.”He has some issues where he is not up to it [playing cricket],” Perry told the . “He is not giving 100% and he figures he should give someone else a chance. His mind is not there to really come out and train and play the game and he’s not motivated to perform at the highest level.”He has decided to take a break and won’t be available for the rest of the season. It’s not a situation where he got dropped or anything. He’s not enjoying cricket anymore as a person. The team spirit is good, but he has things to deal with and his mind is not there. He probably lacks confidence as well.”Powell, 31, last played a Test in March last year, at home against England, and has a modest career haul of 85 wickets from 37 matches at 47.85. He also has 71 ODI wickets from 55 matches at 31.73. Perry said the dimming hopes of a recall to the national setup could have also contributed towards his decision.”He hasn’t been getting a lot of wickets in any one innings and he’s over 30 and he probably isn’t motivated and doesn’t think West Indies’ [selectors] are looking at him anymore,” Perry said. “If you are 20-odd years old and running in hard and hitting the pitch then you would be motivated to train hard and work hard, but he’s been there and done that and people might be thinking he has passed his best.”Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert expressed surprise at Powell’s decision. “The team was a little bit surprised to hear that Powell has opted out,” he told the . “But having said that, people come and people go and everyone realise that we still have a job to do and we will just have to do it to the best of our ability. We cannot allow that to distract us from our goal.”He will definitely be missed as an experienced player. It was always good to have him around, having represented the West Indies and Jamaica on numerous occasions. He is a strike bowler and it was always good to have a player like that, who will bowl fast and get us early wickets.”He is someone that always gives 100 per cent. You can’t not notice a person like Daren when he is around.”
