The wicketkeeper Chris Hartley has been named Queensland’s player of the year for 2012-13 while the fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile won Western Australia’s equivalent award after a strong summer. The state awards period was wrapped up at the weekend with the Queensland titles handed out and Hartley almost swept all categories. He won the Ian Healy Trophy as the state’s player of the year and also picked up the one-day player of the year prize and the players’ player award after a season in which he completed the double of 500 Sheffield Shield runs and 50 dismissals. However, the Shield award was the only honour Hartley did not collect as that went to the captain James Hopes for a season that brought him 473 runs at 31.53 and 32 wickets at 22.75.Hartley was Queensland’s second-leading run scorer in the Shield behind Joe Burns, with 510 runs at 28.33 and he also picked up 51 catches and a stumping. The likelihood is that Matthew Wade and Brad Haddin will be Australia’s two glovemen on the tour of England later this year but all the same, Hartley’s efforts are a reminder to the national selectors in an Ashes year of his consistent output – it was the fourth time he had completed the double of 500 runs and 50 dismissals. In Western Australia, Coulter-Nile had another encouraging summer and will be in contention for the Ashes squad, although fast bowling is not an area in which Australia lack depth. He collected 26 Shield wickets at 27.92 and was the second leading wicket taker in the Ryobi Cup with 16 victims at 23.18.The other four states all named their players of the year last month. James Faulkner won the Ricky Ponting Medal in Tasmania, Chris Rogers took out the Bill Lawry Medal in Victoria, in South Australia Chadd Sayers claimed the Neil Dansie Medal and Gurinder Sandhu won the Steve Waugh Medal in New South Wales.

Stewart Walters fell two runs short of securing Glamorgan’s first century of the season but they built a useful second-innings lead on the third day of their Division Two clash with Essex at Cardiff.Walters made 98 to follow up his first-innings 67, while captain Mark Wallace struck an unbeaten 61 as Glamorgan reached the close on 303 for 6, a lead of 189 going into the final day.Essex resumed on 343 for 9 but their first innings lasted just three more balls. Graham Napier added two runs before he edged Michael Hogan to Jim Allenby at slip, giving the bowler career-best figures of 6 for 70.Essex finished on 345, missing out on a fourth batting bonus point, but held a useful 114-run first-innings lead.In a dramatic start to the Glamorgan second innings David Masters struck withhis second ball to remove Ben Wright. Will Bragg and Walters rallied in a bid to reduce the deficit with Glamorgan reaching the 50-run mark in the 12th over.Bragg looked in good touch until he went lbw to Ravi Bopara on 42 to leave Glamorgan 65 for two. And before lunch Marcus North became Masters’ second victim, the bowler breaking through the Australian’s defence.Glamorgan reached lunch on 80 for 3, with Essex still well placed, but Walters and Murray Goodwin wiped out Essex’s lead in the 40th over before rain heralded an early tea at 157 for 3.Essex fought back briefly in the evening session. Goodwin fell eight short of his second half-century of the season, caught behind off Reece Topley, before Allenby was bowled by Masters for 11.Much depended on Walters and the out-of-form Wallace if Glamorgan were to leave Essex a challenging run chase.Glamorgan’s lead was 120 when slow left-armer Tim Phillips snared the important wicket of Walters, who edged behind, leaving the batsman agonisingly short of his century. But Wallace, who reached his first half-century of the season from 90 balls, and Graham Wagg (32 not out) added 69 for the seventh wicket as the hosts reached stumps with their tails up.

BCCI to regulate player agents

In the light of the spot-fixing controversy, the Indian board has decided that all player agents will need to be accredited

ESPNcricinfo staff19-May-2013The Indian board has outlined its first detailed response to the spot-fixing controversy, which includes an accreditation process for player agents and increased security for teams during the IPL. The plan was announced by BCCI president N Srinivasan after a meeting of its working committee on Sunday, three days after three Rajasthan Royals players were arrested on charges related to corruption in cricket. The BCCI also appointed a commission of an inquiry into the spot-fixing, to be headed by its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) chief Ravi Sawani. He will present his findings to the BCCI’s disciplinary committee, after which the Indian board will decide what action to take on the three players.Srinivasan also said that Rajasthan Royals will file a police complaint against three of their players arrested earlier this week on allegations of spot-fixing. He said the BCCI itself will not press legal charges. “We are advised that the BCCI by itself cannot because they (the players) are contracted to the franchise, the franchise is filing.”In a statement issued by Royals on Sunday, the franchise said they would file FIRs to help the police carry out the investigation. “It is critical that this evil is rooted out of the game, and as such we will be filing FIRs with the Delhi Police. This will ensure that justice is pursued to its most complete end, and that the police is able to appropriately conduct its investigation.”Betting on sports, except horse-racing, is illegal in India and since the controversy broke, there have been demands for legalising betting, but Srinivasan wasn’t sure that would solve the problem. “In other countries they have legalised betting and it has helped control … but I do not know as far as India is concerned.”Srinivasan also acknowledged the limitations of the ACSU in stopping corruption in cricket. “They can’t gather information like police can. They can’t tap phones. They have got a lot of restrictions,” he said. “Not being a police organisation, we are handicapped when it comes to control over bookies.”The BCCI meeting was convened after three cricketers playing in the IPL – Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila – were arrested by Delhi Police for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing. Amit Singh, a former Royals cricketer, was arrested as a bookie.BCCI had suspended the four cricketers, pending enquiry, after the controversy occurred. The three Royals players were arrested on Thursday by Delhi Police for allegedly indulging in spot-fixing during three IPL matches. The Delhi Police also arrested several bookies for their role in the matter.

Cuca, Marrony, Zidane, Pato… O resumo do vaivém desta segunda

RENOVADO

EXPERIÊNCIA NO GLORIOSO

PAPAGAIO É DO GALO!

EXIGÊNCIAS DO FRANCÊS

Posteriormente, a equipe argentina ainda adquiriu 50% do passe do jogador.

Pollard wicket hands South Africa semi-final place

It has been a decade since South Africa’s miscalculation of Duckworth-Lewis saw them exit the World Cup in the first round. Finally, they will consider themselves redeemed. In a twist of fate as perfectly formed as the ringlet on a young girl’s crop of hair, West Indies were pushed out of the Champions Trophy after a rain-affected tied match. After 26.1 overs, with six wickets down, they needed 191 runs to win the match. They left the field on 190 for 6 as the drizzle drifted down. The result awarded a point to each side and South Africa progressed to the semi-finals by virtue of a greater net run rate.If ever one ball was wholly decisive on the outcome of a match, the first ball of the 27th over was it. Kieron Pollard was dismissed when he threw his bat at a Ryan McLaren short ball and was caught at third man.Had Pollard not been out, West Indies would have won the match because they were ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis par for five wickets down. Then it would have been them, not South Africa, who advanced to the semi-finals.As the second innings developed, it seemed more likely West Indies side would pull off a heist. Despite losing Chris Gayle early and seeing their required run-rate soar to 9.5 per over, Marlon Samuels and Pollard plundered 58 runs off 33 balls to resurrect ghosts of tournaments past for South Africa. When the requisite 20 overs had been reach to make sure the match would count West Indies were 14 runs behind the Duckworth-Lewis total they would have needed to win. At 130 for 4, Samuels decided it was time to tuck in and he took 15 runs off Robin Peterson’s next over to close the gap.West Indies fined for slow over-rate

West Indies have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their rain-affected match against South Africa in Cardiff. Match referee Andy Pycroft found West Indies one over short of their target at the end of the match, taking time allowances into consideration. The captain Dwayne Bravo, who accepted the penalty without contest, was fined 20% of his match fee and his team-mates were fined 10%.

But the fit-again Dale Steyn swung the pendulum back South Africa’s way. He sent down four dot balls, including a superb bouncer, before conceding just two singles and the onus was on the batsmen again. Lonwabo Tsotsobe entered the ring next and Pollard took him on. Two blistering boundaries, one mistimed over third man, the other a pull to midwicket, clawed West Indies in again. The protagonists would not have been misplaced at a Wimbledon doubles match as Samuels set on Steyn again. A pull for four off the first ball of his next over put pressure back on Steyn but he delivered the ace. Full, straight and on-target, he uprooted Samuels’ middle-stump.Enter Dwayne Bravo, whose clip for four kept West Indies exactly on par at the end of the 24th over. Pollard played the shot of the match with a straight drive for four off Tsotsobe in the next over and West Indies inched ahead. They stayed ahead after 26 overs and then Pollard made the mistake he will rue on the flight back home.West Indies had taken 72 runs off the seven overs before Pollard was dismissed and seemed capable to continuing in that vein. The way West Indies batted will not answer questions of whether South Africa – propped up by Colin Ingram’s 73 at the top of the order and the 68-run fifth-wicket stand between Faf du Plessis and David Miller – had managed enough runs in a rain-affected affair. The performance will, however, put to rest some of their other concerns. Ingram notched up his highest score since taking over the opening role and acquitted himself particularly well against the spin of Sunil Narine. He and Hashim Amla put on the highest first-wicket stand of South Africa’s campaign so far.Their finishers had the opportunity to get into the game and did. Du Plessis and Miller took an average total and turned it into something South Africa would feel comfortable with. Most importantly for them, Steyn made a successful return from his side-strain. He bowled at good pace and found swing to restore confidence in their pace attack they can present later in the competition.West Indies showed glimpses of the same. Tino Best bowled quickly – his fastest ball was 151.3kph – Ravi Rampaul had a menacing slower ball and Gayle, Samuels and Pollard cleared the boundary at will. They got the most crucial thing wrong. So often, South Africa have been on that side of the equation. In 1992, they were eliminated from the World Cup because of rain. In 1996, the lost to West Indies. In 1999, they tied a semi-final against Australia and had to leave the World Cup because they had lost to them in the group stage. In 2003, they fell foul of Duckworth-Lewis. And at the 2004 and 2006 Champions Trophies defeats to West Indies put them out. They may well see this result as a cathartic way to move past all of those and an omen that their major tournament fortunes are changing. But the real knockouts are still to come.
