Westfield breaks spot-fixing silence

Mervyn Westfield, the former Essex cricketer, has spoken publically for the first time about the chain of events which led to him receive a prison sentence for spot-fixing

Mervyn Westfield on Mind, Matters, Integrity

Mervyn Westfield, the former Essex cricketer, has spoken publicly for the first time about the chain of events which led to him receive a prison sentence for spot-fixing as part of an anti-corruption campaign headed by the Professional Cricketers’ Association.Westfield describes in the PCA video how he was lured into spot-fixing by the former Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria. Kaneria was banned for life for his part in the affair in June 2012 and lost his appeal against the ban in an ECB hearing in July this year.Kaneria’s lawyers have since filed an appeal in the UK in the Commercial Court, with Kaneria stating that he wants his story to be heard by all. The Commercial Court deals with complex cases arising out of business disputes, both national and international.Westfield tells in the PCA video how his four-month sentence in Belmarsh prison coincided with the discovery that his father had cancer and how he was shaken by the knowledge that he had let down his parents and that he was no longer a good role model for his two younger brothers.”I first met Danish at the age of 18 in the second year of my professional contract,” Westfield tells. “He was a very bubbly person. Everyone liked him in the dressing room. He was a role model for most of the people in our team.”Basically I was at his house and he asked if he could speak to me outside… that’s when he started first talking about it. He said it’s hard for a young person to get money nowadays in cricket and that’s how the conversation started.’If I can give back to anyone – kids, older people it doesn’t matter to me – as long as I can give something back.’- Mervyn Westfield•Getty Images

“He suggested to me that a few people in the game were doing it as well. I felt confused because I didn’t really understand where he was coming from or what he was talking about. Him and his friends kept on asking and asking and I felt pressured into it and I sort of had to do it. I just felt so confused what was going.”Westfield was asked to concede a pre-planned number of runs in a televised 40-over tie against Durham in Chester-le-Street in September 2009. He inadvertently failed to concede the number of runs agreed but after Essex returned home in the early hours of the morning he was paid anyway. He reveals that he resisted suggestions that he should repeat the sting against Somerset five days later.”When I bowled my first over, I didn’t even check the scoreboard to see if I went for 12 or more,” he said. “All the emotions going through my head, I was just confused about what was going on.”Because Danish lived next to me he always gave me a lift home. It was late, it was three o’clock in the morning or something like that. He had two friends in the car as well and they had a black bag and they gave it to me with money.”The next couple of days we went up to Somerset and they tried to get me to do that game as well but I said no definitely not this time. I was worried obviously if someone finds out a what’s going to happen to me and I love cricket and… I didn’t want to lose my career and obviously that Durham game has cost me my career.”He also relates how he was summoned back to Essex’s HQ at Chelmsford after a training session by the coach, Paul Grayson. Essex – in a meeting with Grayson, the chief executive David East and captain Mark Pettini – initially told him that they intended to deal with the affair in house. Westfield’s transgression only became public knowledge six months the event took place.Westfield was banned from professional cricket for five years, and club cricket for three years. In recognition of his willingness to help the PCA with its anti-corruption education programme, an ECB appeal panel in June reduced his ban from club cricket by a year, meaning he will be able to play again next season. He will also appear at the PCA’s rookie camp, for new professionals, in February and at PCA pre-season meetings with each of the 18 first-class counties next March.”I’m not trying to tell people to feel sorry for me… because what I’ve done is bad but not being able to play or coach any cricket is a massive shock for me,” he said. “I just want to rebuild my life.. and try and get back on track. If I can give back to anyone – kids, older people it doesn’t matter to me – as long as I can give something back.”Jason Ratcliffe, PCA assistant chief executive, said: “Mervyn recognizes that he did wrong and that the time is right to make amends within the cricket community to ensure nobody makes the same mistakes. His moving interview is the first step of the education process and should serve as a timely reminder to all, that cricket and other sports will not let up in the fight against corrupters.”

A torcida do Vasco começou a ficar impaciente com a apatia do time.

KRL on top of table after draw

A round-up of the President’s Trophy matches on November 3, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2013Khan Research Laboratories were propelled to the top of the table with 12 points after securing a draw against State Bank of Pakistan. KRL put SBP in, with the decision seemingly vindicated after Yasir Arafat bowled opener Raheel Majeed for just 1. A 53-run stand for the second wicket between Kashif Siddiq and Umair Khan saved early blushes, before an imperious 202 from Usman Arshad wrested the match in SBP’s favour. SBP finished their innings on 420, with Sadaf Hussain and Umaid Asif taking three wickets a piece.KRL’s effort proved even between, led by Ali Khan’s 187 at No. 6, with a pair of seventies from Shoaib Ahmed and Nayyer Abbas book-ending the innings. KRL finished on 481 despite Mohammad Naved taking 5 for 129. Facing a deficit of 61 runs, SBP did well to get past the mark with just a wicket lost. Majeed scored 50 while Umair Khan just missed out on an eight first-class ton when he was out for 97. SBP were 199 for 5 when stumps was called and the match was declared a draw.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited beat Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited by 93 runs in Islamabad to register their first win of the tournament. ZTBL batted first, but found themselves in a jam when they were placed at 42 for 3. Haris Sohail and Haseeb-ur-Rehman steadied the innings with a 75-run stand. However, once both batsmen departed, the rest of the order failed to put up a fight as ZTBL were dismissed for 210. Imran Ali led the bowlers with 5 for 31 while Hussain Talat chipped in with 3 for 24. SNGPL’s innings was marked with the inability of their batsmen to push past double figures, with only Naeemuddin and Azhar Ali the exceptions. ZTBL needed just three bowlers to dismiss SNGPL for 80, giving them a lead of 130 runs. Usman Khan took four wickets, while Imran Khan and Mohammad Khalil chipping in with three a piece.ZTBL posted a strong second innings when Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam put on 166 runs for the second wicket, with Azam having to retire hurt on 80. Sohail remained unbeaten on 50 as ZTBL declared on 236 for 2. SNGPL were given a target of 367 to chase, with things started abjectly when SNGPL were 35 for 3. Things got even worse when they were placed at 103 for 7, but a stunning counter-attacking 106 from Bilawal Bhatti scored 106 at No. 9, but despie that performance, SNGPL still ended up falling short by 93 runs.A nerveless unbeaten 49 by Naeem Anjum in the second innings saw out a tricky 178-run chase for Pakistan Television as they held on to a four-wicket victory over Port Qasim Authority in Lahore. PQA batted first, with the openers putting on 64 for the first wicket. Innings from Faraz Ali (69) and Mohammad Waqas (88), pushed them to 316. Mohammad Ali’s took best figures of 5 for 75. Despite losing their openers with the score on just 11, and then suffering further set backs to be reduced to 51 for 4, Pakistan Television looked under the cosh, but Zeeshan Mushtaq (105) and Yasim Murtaza (70) rallied the team, helping them secure a slim 43-run lead. Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan chipped in with three wickets a piece.PQA’s second innings didn’t go to plan as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite a stirring effort from Shahzaib Hasan, with 105 off 110 balls which included seven fours and four sixes, none of the other batsmen, aside from Sami’s 30, were able to contribute significant scores as PQA were rolled for 220. Waqar Ahmed and Wasim Murtaza did chief damage, taking three wickets each. With 178 runs for victory, Pakistan Television lost opener Haroon Ahmed with the score on just 17. Imran Ali and Nawar Ahmed also went out in quicktime, before a double-strike of consecutive balls from Mohammad Sami left them at a precarius 102, with 76 still required. A calm 59-run partnership between Fahad-ul-Haq and Naeem Anjum ensured they got to the mark, with Anjum finishing off the chase with consecutive boundaries.United Bank Limited beat Water and Power Development Authority by 176 runs to post their first win of the tournament. UBL batted first, with Abid Ali leading the way with his 76. Each of the UBL batsmen chipped in, but failed to go on to post a meaningful total. A couple of forties from Asif Raza and Tariq Haroon were the only notable performances other than Abid Ali as UBL reached 319. WAPDA started promisingly with some good stands up front, but lost their way after reaching 218 for 6, losing the remaining four wickets for the addition of just 42 runs. Aamer Sajjad, the captain, top-scored with 84 while Mohammad Ayub chipped in with 50. Both Mohammad Irshad and Tariq Haroon picked up four wickets each to lead the UBL bowlers’ efforts.UBL’s second innings was anchored by Abid again as he bettered his 76 in the first innings with an unbeaten 101. Khaqan Arsal scored 70 at No. 5, as UBL declared their innings at 242 for 6 with a lead of 302. WAPDA were never really in the chase, as they succumbed to 68 for 7. Only their captain, Sajjad, fought valiantly with his 64 as WAPDA were bundled out for 125, giving UBL a 176-run victory. Some imposing first-innings totals resulted in the match between Pakistan International Airlines and Habib Bank Limited finishing as a stalemate. Both sides were seeking their first win after losing their respective tournament openers. It was PIA who batted first, where innings from Fahad Iqbal (52), Anop Santosh (51) and Anwar Ali (61) helped PIA to 343. Sarmad Anwar and Ehsan Adil took seven wickets between them.Habib Bank’s innings started well, with opener Shan Masood and captain Imran Farhat adding 114 for the second wicket. Masood and No. 6 Rameez Aziz then put on 169 runs together, with Masood finally falling for 140. After Rameez was out on 78, Mohammad Aslam and Abdul Ameer were left not out as the match petered to a draw, with Habib Bank on 411 for 8.

Hong Kong, Netherlands through to World T20

A round-up of all the playoff matches in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers on November 28, 2013

Hong Kong survived an early scare to beat Papua New Guinea by a comfortable 29-run margin to take the fifth spot available for Associates in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20.Hong Kong looked to have made a mistake by deciding to bat first. They fell to 19 for 4 in the fourth over, but a late surge by Babar Hayat, whose 48 was comfortably the high score in a game dominated by bowlers. The PNG opening bowlers Pipi Raho and Willie Gavera achieved good swing in the early overs, but Hong Kong was equally culpable in the initial struggle with Irfan Ahmed and Tanwir Afzal both caught slogging at deep midwicket off Gavera. Waqas Barkat, deputising for Jamie Atkinson who suffered a broken right thumb a day earlier against Nepal, was also caught after miscuing a slog off Gavera while Nizakat Khan chased a wide delivery from Raho and edged to Mahuru Dai at first slip as Hong Kong’s top four all left without reaching double figures.Hong Kong, though, did not deter from their aggressive intent and Munir Dar struck four boundaries in his 22 off 15 balls before slicing an attempted cut to short third man. From then on, Hayat and Mark Chapman patiently added 62 for the sixth wicket in a match defining stand.A pivotal moment took place in the 16th with the score on 91 for 5 when Geraint Jones dropped a Hayat at extra cover for 31. Hayat then plundered a four and a six off the next over by Chris Amini to take the score to 116.Hong Kong suffered a second collapse as they lost four wickets in the space of nine balls towards the end of their innings. However, the last-wicket pair of Nadeem Ahmed and Haseeb Amjad took 17 runs off the final nine deliveries to take Hong Kong to 137 for 9.Like the Netherlands a day before against the UAE, PNG seemed unsure how to approach a small target and the conservative approach at the start of their chase was something they could not overturn later on.Asad Vala was run out without scoring and Chris Kent struggled against Tanwir Afzal before falling lbw. PNG’s leading scorer Tony Ura was joined by Jones but neither one was able to generate enough momentum for PNG to put Hong Kong under pressure in the field. After PNG slipped to 59 for 5, the hopes for a comeback rested with Geraint Jones, but he was dismissed by Amjad for 20 in the 15th. They were eventually bowled out for 108 one ball into the 20th.”I have no words. It will be the first time Hong Kong will play in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament,” Barkat said. “I think the whole team was really keen to qualify and go to Bangladesh. Though all of us were tired and disappointed after losing yesterday’s match, we did not let our heads down. It is really good that we came back hard today. Even after losing four wickets early on, the guys had self-belief and we did it.”
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe Netherlands successfully chased down a steep target against Scotland to secure a return to the ICC World Twenty20 for the first time since they upset England at the tournament opener in 2009.Ben Cooper, who had batted at seven in Wednesday’s loss to the UAE, was promoted to open and his positive approach was the catalyst in the chase. Cooper’s presence encouraged Wesley Barresi to come out of the shell he was in on Wednesday and the pair put on 67 for the second wicket. Cooper was eventually stumped for 40 off Majid Haq, but the Netherlands refused to retreat.Michael Swart picked up where Cooper left off and along with Barresi knocked off the rest of the runs needed as the Netherlands crossed the target with 13 balls to spare. Barresi finished 75 not out and scored a chunk of his eight fours using the sweep against the spinners, with Haq taking the most punishment going for 46 runs in his four overs. This was the last of four games played on the same pitch and the previous two demonstrated wear which caused problems for the team chasing. With that in mind, Scotland chose to bat. Despite a horror start with openers Richie Berrington and Calum MacLeod bagging ducks, Scotland cruised through most of the innings, with Matt Machan and Michael Leask each posting half-centuries. Machan’s 61 was his fourth half-century of the event, keeping him on top of the batting charts with 363 runs.Machan and Leask added 111 for the third wicket to take the score to 112 for 2 after 15 overs. With wickets in hand they threatened to post a score in excess of 160, but the Netherlands bowling unit reined Scotland in with late strikes aided by some stellar catching on the boundary by Cooper and Tim Gruijters.Ahsan Malik accounted for Machan and Matthew Cross to finish with 2 for 24 in his four overs. At 142 for 4 with seven balls to go in the innings, captain Kyle Coetzer was caught on the boundary by Gruijters off the bowling of Mudassar Bukhari. Malik conceded just four runs in the last over including the wicket of Cross to give the Netherlands added momentum heading into the second innings. Even though the target was 30 runs more than they faced against the UAE, the team made it look relatively simple in the end.
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsItaly claimed ninth place, beating Namibia by 25 runs in the play-off in Abu Dhabi. Italy posted 130 for 9 after choosing to bat. Namibia were never able to get going in the chase, and lost too many wickets upfront to be dismissed for 105 in the last over.Damian Crowley and Carl Sandri made thirties to lead Italy to a strong position at 91 for 3 after 13 overs but the former’s dismissal by Bernard Scholtz sparked a collapse. None of the following batsmen were able to get into double figures as Italy stuttered to 130 for 9.Sandri thrived with the ball as well, taking 2 for 12 from his four overs after Gayashan Munasinghe delivered the initial breakthrough, bowling Louis van der Westhuizen in the third over.
