More grass and pace awaits India

You had to squint to make out the pitch from the boundary. It was the slightly thinner grass rectangle amid all the green

Tim Southee was asked whether he could tell the pitch from the outfield at the Basin Reserve. He smiled, saying it was “tough” to do so at the moment. You had to squint to make out the pitch from the boundary. It was the slightly thinner grass rectangle amid all the green. Much before the start of the India tour, New Zealand coach Mike Hesson had demanded green, seaming pitches for the visitors. The pitch in Auckland for the first Test had some grass cover, but it eased out considerably after only one session. There is still some time to go for the start of the second and final Test, and there is no saying whether all the grass on it will stay, but this one is likely to do a lot more than the drop-in surface at Eden Park. There has been some rain in Wellington past few days, and pitch preparation has not been ideal. It also means there will be at least some moisture underneath that grass going into the Test, even though days are warm and long at this time of the year. The last Test at the Basin a couple of months ago lasted three days, as West Indies were shot out for 193 and 175 to lose by an innings.Brett Sipthorpe, the curator, said he was targeting a similar pitch for India. “It’s had good pace and bounce in it this summer and basically we’re aiming for exactly what we had for the West Indies one,” Sipthorpe told local media. “That was nice and bouncy and had a little bit of nip around, which suits the seamers.”The pitch didn’t have a massive role to play in West Indies’ demolition, though. They won the toss, sent New Zealand to bat and found that the surface wasn’t going to do everything for them. They could not bowl fuller lengths consistently, they could not hold their catches, and Ross Taylor’s century lifted New Zealand to 441. When their turn came, the West Indies batsmen kept playing strokes and kept succumbing, especially to Trent Boult’s considerable inswing.Boult picked up ten wickets in that Test, and swing will be another factor to contend with in Wellington. The famed wind is always a challenge, although Southee said when there was too much of it, swing ceased to be as much of a factor. “I think when it is too windy or gusty, it is hard to swing,” Southee said. “When it is a nice still day, it tends to swing a little bit more, but those are few and far between. It is one of those grounds where the wind is a massive factor and you have to get used to it quickly.”MS Dhoni also mentioned the wind aspect after the Auckland Test, saying it would lead to a “few exciting things”, although his assessment of it assisting swing was at odds with Southee’s. “It is a very windy place, which means the fast bowlers may get a bit of swing,” Dhoni said. “Faster outfield so the scoring can be quite easy if you are hitting with the wind.”The ground staff work on the pitch at the Basin Reserve•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

When India played a Test here on their 2009 trip, which they would have likely won but for rain on the final day, the pitch was not as green. When asked about the Wellington pitch this time after the Auckland Test, Dhoni said he preferred greener surfaces, which his fast bowlers could utilise.”I always complain when we get wickets that are on the drier side and don’t assist the fast bowlers too much,” Dhoni said. “That is where we struggle to some extent. I personally always like when we are playing outside the subcontinent, a greener wicket as it assists our fast bowlers and they can get the opposition out which means it will be testing for our batsmen but I always prefer it that way.”At the moment, Dhoni’s wishes also seem to have been answered along with Hesson’s. The pitch is abundantly green two days before the Test, but how much of the grass will stay? The curator seemed to suggest most of it would. “It just depends on what the weather brings us. If we have to take a little more off we will, but we don’t want to lose our pace and grass cover is pace,” Sipthorpe said. “We’ll do everything we can to try to keep as much grass on as we possibly can.”

India tie-up with England, Australia to revamp NCA

The BCCI has decided to put in place a new structure on the lines of the state-of-the-art high performance centres based in Australia and England as part of the revamp of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. The BCCI will tie-up with the both Cricket Australia and the ECB to get experts in for helping draw the new structure. In the new plan the NCA will have a tie-up with the MRF Pace Foundation to train the fast bowlers from across the country. At a meeting of the NCA board committee, chaired by Kerala Cricket Association president TC Mathew, the BCCI also decided to scrap the three specialist academies (Mumbai – batting, Mohali – fast bowling and Chennai – spin) and replaced them with zonal academies. A separate women’s cricket academy will also soon come into existence, it has been revealed. It was also decided to strengthen the academy in the North-East. The NCA will also sign a tie-up with Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai to facilitate player rehab and biomechanics.”We want to upgrade the syllabus, the nature of coaching and start afresh. We are going to have tie-up with the cricket academies in Australia and England,” Mathew told ESPNcricinfo. “We found the faculty as well as the teaching methodology to be obsolete. We have to upgrade to the new standards,” he said.According to Mathew the NCA had become “redundant” in the way it was functioning. The NCA was originally set up to help in the development of young players and become the feeding line to the senior state and national teams. But the absence of an able and permanent figurehead reduced it to a rehab centre, and not the world-class academy that could house eminent coaches to help upgrade skills of young players.Further controversy riddled the NCA when in 2011 former India captain Anil Kumble quit as NCA chairman, revealing the difference of vision between him and the rest of the committee. The plan to overhaul the NCA and tie-up with MRF was originally proposed last year but had been lying dormant since last August. According to Mathew, N Srinivasan had instructed his committee to review the NCA. “He wanted a thorough overhaul of the NCA. So now the NCA would be strengthened in many ways. We have to change with times” Mathew said.Matthew said that an overhaul was also necessary as it was the “backbone” of Indian cricket. According to him the committee found that some of the faculty members were doubling up as examiners. “You cannot be conducting courses as well as judge players as an examiner. Going forward the two roles would be exclusive,” Mathew said. The NCA committee will be meeting end of this month to put in place an elaborate plan with various deadlines.

Will Smith very much alive and well

‘Will Smith is dead’ is one of the great hoaxes of the Internet. He has been misreported to have died in surgery in the United States and in a fall in New Zealand. There is barely a Twitter hoaxer alive who does not wake up one morning and think “Today, I will tell the world that Will Smith is dead.” There are even hoaxes that there have been hoaxes. Such are the trappings of fame. Will Smith, the Hampshire version, shares a name with the American actor if not a bank balance. As he possesses a quieter intelligence, that is not likely to change. But if he was not reported dead at the end of last season, he was certainly presumed to be ailing. Durham had won the Championship but Smith, a former captain just the wrong side of 30, was judged surplus to requirements after the silverware was lifted. When Hampshire gave him a two-year contract, only a few days elapsed before the media enquired if he wanted to be captain again. He said he did not, although all it will take is a crisis for him to be reconsidered. He wanted to make his mark as a batsman, to improve his status late in his career, and his judicious 70 on a breezy and largely chilly Easter Day at Derby represented a solid start, a step on the way in his own Pursuit of Happyness if unlikely to command quite as many DVD sales. This was a job unlikely to attract an Internet hoaxer, in fact it will not always have held the attention of the Derbyshire faithful as they stared at the slate-grey skies in the hope of a milky sun, and a hat-trick from nowhere, or Wes Durston, but it was the sort of innings to gain dressing room respect. He would have been frustrated, nevertheless, at the manner of his exit as he fell to the gentle left-arm spin of Chesney Hughes, pulling to midwicket the last ball before the second new-ball was due. If not quite a death, certainly a skipped heart beat in disappointment.According to the Second Division table, which is still not as much embryonic as a gleam in the eye, this was top vs bottom: Hampshire lie top on accounts of having played two matches and winning one of them thanks in part to a hundred by Michael Carberry against Gloucestershire; Derbyshire are bottom, outdone by Alastair Cook at Chelmsford after routing Essex for a two-figure score in the first innings. But in reality this is an important early-season joust between two likely promotion contenders, making it the sort of match on which to munch a sausage bap and contemplate the meaning of life, an appropriate Easter pursuit.Derbyshire bowled wastefully in the morning, although that impression is also heightened by Carberry, who is an excellent leaver. He played well for 45 before leaving a little grumpily when Tony Palladino, in his first over against the breeze, had him lbw. “That’ll tarnish your England chances,” came a cry from the outer. It is best not to pause on an lbw at Derby: it deserves to be recognised as the ground where five-second bursts of spleen are more likely than most places.Adams’ inconsequential affair ended when he edged Mark Turner, the loosest of Derbyshire’s attack, to the keeper, before the afternoon gave way to an earnest battle between Smith and the Derbyshire seamers, a colourless landscape lit up by floodlights for much of the day. It was the sort of contest where you dreaded Iain O’Brien, the former New Zealand bowler, who was commentating for the BBC, inviting you to share technical analysis of a mundane game from a press box square of the wicket and someway distant from the action. In the Derbyshire club bookshop, a mid-afternoon refuge during a brief stoppage for rain, there was an air of excitement at the sudden arrival of as many as 42 second-hand copies of – Rhodes’ own story of one of the great throwing storms in cricket history.Rhodes, who has never entirely forgiven the events of half a century ago, was eventually judged to have had a hyper-extending arm but his England career was ruined. He would doubtless be judged innocent these days after extensive technological analysis judged his action to be within the 15-degree limit.Quite why so many copies have suddenly become available was not made clear. Maybe Rhodes has cleared out his garage, always the sort of thing you attempt around Easter, unless you come to Derby, grab an extra layer of clothing out of the boot at lunchtime, and set your face into the wind to watch Will Smith prove that his heart is still beating.
