Journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed the possible arrival of Brendan Rodgers as Tottenham Hotspur manager would help with a transfer for James Maddison.
Will Spurs hire Brendan Rodgersas their manager?
The north London outfit are yet to hire a replacement for Antonio Conte having seen their hopes dashed in recent weeks after chasing both Arne Slot and Julian Nagelsmann.
With that being the case, Tottenham have been linked with a move for Rodgers and Football Transfers have even gone as far as reporting that he has formally been offered the job.
It remains to be seen how accurate that report is but if the 50-year-old – who has been hailed as "genius" by the media – was to arrive in north London this summer, Gold has explained how it could help with one key transfer.
Indeed, when talking about it all on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, the journalist specifically named Maddison as one possible benefit of Rodgers' potential arrival.
Gold said (32:25): "Yeah, Rodgers… [groans] It's one of those. I think that noise says everything. I think there would be some good football played.
"And you know, for those who want James Maddison it would maybe make that easier if that were to happen.
"I just don't know. Again, yeah, you're right, it could be recency bias. It could be seeing them [Leicester] in recent times. I wonder whether he's – this could be completely wrong – whether he's a manager that has kind of reached his ceiling, can he kind of go any further?
"But then hey, I guess he's won silverware. That's something that Spurs haven't done in a long time."
How many times has Maddison played for Rodgers?
According to The Telegraph, Leicester are expected to demand around £50m for Maddison with Spurs heavily linked with the English midfielder.
There is no guarantee that he would want to join Spurs specifically play for Rodgers – especially as the manager was sacked by the Foxes earlier this season with the team battling down at the bottom of the table.
Leicester City's James Maddison with manager Brendan Rodgers
However, Maddison has played pretty well for the former Liverpool boss, netting 49 goals and providing 33 assists in 166 outings – the most he has managed for any manager. While the duo also won the FA Cup and the Community Shield together.
With that being the case, if Rodgers did arrive he could ask the club to sign him a player he knows how to get the best out of in Maddison. And, as Gold suggests, his relationship with the player may well make negotiations easier.
Ange Postecoglou may have only just been named as the permanent successor to Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur, although there are already reports that the 57-year-old could be set to spark something of a mass clearout at N17.
As per The Telegraph, one of the most high-profile figures who is set for the axe is long-serving captain, Hugo Lloris, despite the veteran Frenchman still having a year left to run on his existing deal.
The 36-year-old – who missed much of the 2022/23 campaign due to injury – looks almost certain to be usurped as the new number one in north London, with 90min reporting that Postecoglou and co are interested in a move for Brentford's David Raya.
As pundit Graeme Souness stated earlier this year, the World Cup winner looks to be "past his sell-by date" following what was a rather dismal campaign, with the former Nice man having made the most errors leading goals of any player in the Premier League (4).
Tottenham's Hugo Lloris
If it is any consolation to Lloris, the 145-cap stopper won't be the only figure to be axed under the new regime, with The Telegraph report also stating that on-loan defender, Clement Lenglet, could be set for a return to parent club Barcelona.
Football Insider has also corroborated those claims, with that recent report suggesting that the Lilywhites are not looking to make the centre-back a permanent fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the 27-year-old set to be the 'first to go' as part of this impending summer exodus.
Should Tottenham sign Lenglet permanently?
Described as an "imposter" by ex-Spurs man, Jamie O'Hara, it is fair to say that Lenglet's year on loan in north London has not gone particularly smoothly, with the Frenchman forming part of a defence that shipped 63 league goals – the sixth-worst record in the division.
Notably criticised by commentator Jim Belgin for his "awful mistake" in the 4-2 defeat to Manchester City back in January, the one-time Sevilla man failed to have the desired impact at the heart of the defence, with his average match rating of 6.65, as per Sofascore, seeing him only ranking 20th in the Tottenham squad.
Remarkably, the struggling outfit only kept one Premier League clean sheet with the 15-cap dud in the side, with the club seemingly "paying the price" for opting to make that cheap, temporary move, according to respected insider, John Wenham.
As such, there will no doubt be a sense of relief that Postecoglou is looking to shift the centre-back in the coming weeks, with chairman Daniel Levy likely keen to free up some funds by getting Lenglet's £145k-per-week salary off the books – with that figure equating to around 7% of the entire wage bill.
With the Lilywhites having had little return on that investment this season, it appears to be a no-brainer for the new boss to quickly ditch the defender and send him packing back to Catalonia.
Leeds United's fate in the Premier League all comes down to the final day, with Sam Allardyce's side requiring something of a miracle if they want to avoid relegation back to the Championship.
The Yorkshire outfit need to ensure that they beat Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon and then hope that both Leicester City and Everton drop points in their games against West Ham United and Bournemouth respectively.
Unlike their relegation rivals, Leeds' opponents actually have something to play for on the final day as Spurs could still lose out on European football altogether, which only makes things harder at Elland Road.
Allardyce's side will have to produce far more than they did in last weekend's 3-1 defeat against West Ham if they want to stay up, so changes seem likely this afternoon – with as many as four alterations from the trip to the London Stadium potentially in the offing.
How should Leeds line up against Spurs?
Allardyce has stuck with Joel Robles as his first choice in his tenure thus far and seems unlikely to revert back to Illan Meslier for the final-day clash.
There is one change in the defence as captain Liam Cooper returns at centre-back in the hope that he can inspire an unlikely victory, with the "appalling" Rasmus Kristensen – as described by journalist Leon Wobschall – dropping to the bench after a less-than-impressive stint in the heart of Leeds' defence.
Luke Ayling and Pascal Struijk continue at full-back, with Max Wober partnering Cooper in the middle, in the hope that they can improve upon Leeds' rotten goals-against record which sees them recognised as the worst defence in the Premier League.
Leeds United captain Liam Cooper
Allardyce's 4-2-3-1 set-up has thus far produced one point from a possible nine but he seems unlikely to switch now, although he could add some more defensive stability by starting Marc Roca and Robin Koch as the midfield pair, with Brenden Aaronsen also afforded a rare start as the attacking-midfielder, with Adam Forshaw and Weston McKennie dropping out.
This should free up the wingers to push forward, so Jack Harrison should keep his place after enjoying a strong 2023 which has produced four goals and five assists, while Wilfried Gnonto also returns to the starting side in place of the stricken Patrick Bamford, who looks unlikely to feature after picking up a hamstring injury last week.
Finally, Rodrigo starts in the attack after Allardyce confirmed on Friday that he had trained despite the knock he was carrying at the London Stadium, with the Spaniard almost certain to be risked given he is the top scorer at Elland Road this season.
Newcastle United are interested in making a "staggering offer" RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.
Is Szoboszlai shining for Leipzig?
This is arguably the most exciting time to be a Magpies supporters in many years, with everything seemingly going smoothly on and off the pitch under Eddie Howe.
Newcastle are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season, having finished fourth in the Premier League in 2022/23, and it now essential that they bring in top-quality new signings to ensure they keep moving in a positive direction.
One of those players could be Szoboszlai, who has caught the eye with his performances for Leipzig of late, proving to be one of their most effective creative players. Last term, he scored six goals and registered eight assists in 28 Bundesliga starts, as well as averaging 2.3 key passes per game – more than any other player at the club.
With Newcastle still seemingly circling for the £35,000-a-week Hungarian's signature, a key update has now emerged regarding the current situation.
RB Leipzig midfielderDominik Szoboszlai.
Could Newcastle sign Szoboszlai this summer?
According to L'Equipe [via Sport Witness], the Magpies are "preparing to make a staggering offer" for Szoboszlai, amid interest in Lens striker Lois Openda, too.
The Leipzig man's current deal doesn't expire until the summer of 2026, meaning they aren't necessarily in a rush to sell him, although they would clearly be able to receive big money for his services if they do move him on during the upcoming summer window.
Szoboszlai could be such an eye-catching signing for Newcastle, should they get a deal over the line, with the youngster a huge talent with an enormous future ahead of him. He has already scored 62 goals and added 67 assists during his club career, despite his tender years, across spells at FC Liefering, RB Salzburg and Leipzig, not to mention finding the net seven times in 30 caps for Hungary.
He has been dubbed "The Hungarian Maestro" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who has also described him as "something special", further highlighting what big talent he is.
Most at home in a central attacking midfield role, Szobozslai could be an alternative, and potentially cheaper, option to rumoured Newcastle target James Maddison, coming in and offering more of an attacking spark and goal threat than the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, for all their many plus points as players.

Joao Felix has dropped a possible hint about one day maybe playing in MLS as his future remains undecided having returned to Atletico Madrid after his loan at Chelsea.
Who will Joao Felix join this summer?
The 22-year-old didn't quite live up to the hype in the Premier League and he leaves the Blues have picked up one red card, scored four goals, and delivered zero assists in 20 games across all competitions.
Despite that, there will likely still be a number of teams who want to sign the player as manager Diego Simeone has suggested that Felix could be off in the summer.
He told Partidazo Cope (via Goal): "It is necessary to see if economically it is good for the club. I no longer enter there. He is a boy who has qualities, who plays well, who everyone talks about and hopefully he can crush it. With us he has always had peaks, he has had bad luck with injuries."
On top of that, though, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has stated that Chelsea won't be signing Felix permanently and so his future remains up in the air.
The Portuguese international has been active on social media recently, and the images could suggest he's keen on playing in MLS one day – even if that's not likely to happen particularly soon.
Indeed, Felix posted several photos of himself playing tennis in a Charlotte FC shirt on his Instagram page.
Why was Felix wearing a Charlotte FC shirt?
In the photos, the 22-year-old can be seen wearing a shirt with the name Nuno Santos on the back – he is Felix's former Benfica team-mate who now plays for Charlotte.
And so, perhaps this is just a reunion of old friends as opposed to any major transfer hint that might tell us which step the player will take next in his career.
Even so, you can never rule anything out in football. What's more, even if Felix doesn't head to America this summer, his now evident connections with MLS could mean a move might happen at some point in the future.
For now, though, it does seem more likely that he'll either remain in Madrid or find another big European club to impress at next summer.
For instance, one recent rumour suggests he could be heading back to the Premier League but this time he'll get a chance to impress with Newcastle United.
Mason Mount's Chelsea future looks like a transfer saga that will drag on right until the end of the summer window.
Manchester United remain eager to sign the England international, but there is a big gap between both sides' respective valuations, with the Red Devils supposedly only willing to offer £50m.
Chelsea want closer to the £70m mark for a player about to enter the final year of his contract, but allowing the rigmarole to continue deep into the summer would be damaging for the Blues.
Instead, it may be a case of accepting United's offer now and looking for a replacement – or indeed searching within their ranks for a ready-made alternative of sorts.
Who is Chelsea youngster Cesare Casadei?
In Cesare Casadei, Chelsea appear to have a midfielder who is ready to step up and play in the Premier League under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
According to the Evening Standard, Pochettino is weighing up whether to include the 20-year-old as part of Chelsea's pre-season training camp after he caught the eye at the U20 World Cup with Italy.
Casadei ended the tournament as top scorer with seven goals – this as a midfielder, remember – to follow in the steps of the likes of Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Sergio Aguero.
But rather than having the next Messi on their hands, Chelsea will settle for something close to the next Frank Lampard, a player who scored a club record 211 goals for the West London side.
With eight goals in nine appearances for Italy at U20 level, Casadei will now look to get close to the mark Lampard managed for England U21 when scoring nine goals in 19 caps.
The youngster is not strictly one of Chelsea's own, having been recruited from Inter Milan in a reported £16m deal last summer, before then being loaned out to Championship side Reading in January.
Casadei scored one goal in 15 appearances for the relegated Royals as he made his first foray into senior football. While he caught the eye with his goals at the U20 World Cup, it was more the defensive aspect of the youngster's game that stood out at Reading.
He averaged 1.87 blocks per 90 minutes, as per FBref, which was the third-most of any Reading player, while also ranking highly for the percentage of aerial duels won with 70.6 – again, only two others bettered that figure.
For comparison, Mount averaged 1.31 blocks per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season and won 29.1% of his aerial duels.
Italy head coach Roberto Mancini was glad to see Casadei go out and get some regular football, and he now looks set to step up and feature for the U21 side during the 2023-24 campaign.
"Cesare Casadei is really good. He had already impressed me [before the U20 World Cup]," Mancini told Corriere dello Sport last week, via Football Italia.
"He went to England and played in the Championship, a tough and formative league, almost like the Premier League. If it wasn't for the U20 World Cup, he would be playing for the U21 side already."
Given Chelsea's hugely bloated squad, it may well be that Casadei has to be patient for his chance. But if nothing else, the past six months suggest the Blues have another talented midfielder on their hands, regardless of whether Mount stays or goes.
For a split-second, Umesh Yadav’s heart was in his mouth. He’d had the key wicket of England’s innings clasped in his hands but appeared to have tossed it away in a celebratory gesture reminiscent of Herschelle Gibbs’ infamous “dropping of the World Cup” at Headingley in 1999.This time, however, there was no reprieve for the opposition’s centurion. Whereas at Headingley 17 years ago, Steve Waugh went on to make a matchwinning 120 not out, in Rajkot Joe Root was sent on his way for 124, as Yadav ended a vital 179-run stand for England’s fourth wicket. The moment happened at blink-and-you-miss-it speed. Root, on the front foot, drove hard back towards Yadav’s knees, and in a single upwards motion, the bowler first wrapped his fingers round the ball then flung it skywards, but with less control than he might have desired. In a moment of panic, Yadav parried it over his head, peered back over his shoulder to locate the ball, then watched it flop to the turf near umpire Kumar Dharmasena. Root, understandably, stood his ground, but the batsman’s fate was effectively sealed from the moment that Dharmasena gave a soft signal to the third umpire, Rod Tucker, that he believed that Yadav had been in control of the ball for long enough, and therefore the catch was fair. The relevant part of the Law (19.4) states:”The act of making the catch, or of fielding the ball, shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with some part of a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control both over the ball and over his own movement.””I think the on-field umpire’s soft signal was the key,” Fraser Stewart, of the MCC, told ESPNcricinfo. “If he’d given a not-out soft signal, there was probably enough doubt to keep it as not out. However, as the soft signal was out, the on-field umpires must have been happy with it as their gut reaction and, had it been in a game with no reviews or referrals, they would have given it out.”Did he have complete control over the ball? In slow-motion you would probably say ‘yes’, but in real time it’s less clear. It could easily be argued either way.”The soft signal was introduced in response to concerns that TV replays, for all the benefits that they offer, don’t always show the full picture as experienced live out in the middle. Low catches, in particular, have often fallen victim to the phenomenon of “foreshortening”, as 3D events are replayed on 2D screens. In November 2014, the ICC introduced the concept of broadcasting the discussions between on-field and third umpires, to further demystify the process for viewers.”Decision-making is an important skill and one that should be applied at the highest level of the game,” umpire Simon Taufel told the Times of India recently. “So, the soft signal maintains the premise that the decision-making happens on field and not just left to technology to provide an outcome.”Root himself was phlegmatic about the incident. “I was so disgusted with the shot that – giving it the Arsene Wenger approach – I didn’t really see what was happening.”But having seen the slow-motion replay, it does look out. When it’s sped up it looks a bit strange, but I was very lucky to get an umpire’s call with an lbw earlier on and you have to take the rough with the smooth sometimes and just get on with it.”Additional reporting by George Dobell
Manchester United could end the season on a high today as they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final, with victory ensuring they finish the campaign with two trophies for the first time since 2016/2017.
Regardless of the outcome, Erik ten Hag has restored some pride in the Red Devils and with the summer transfer window just around the corner, he could further bolster his team in order to claim more prestigious prizes in the future.
Strengthening his attacking options seems to be the priority, with Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani key targets, however there will surely be improvements all over the pitch.
The Old Trafford side have been linked recently with defender Goncalo Inacio according to O Jogo (via Sport Witness) and Sporting CP will demand a fee in the region of £45m should Ten Hag look to make a bid for the player, which is well within their budget.
A move for Inacio could see the Dutchman move on a few defenders, with Victor Lindelof surely one that could be departing United this summer.
Could Goncalo Inacio replace Victor Lindelof at Manchester United?
The Swedish defender found himself down the pecking order behind both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez during the opening months of the season, yet when the Argentinian suffered a season-ending injury in April, he managed to find some form.
During the win over AFC Bournemouth in May, he was lauded as “unbelievable” by journalist Liam Canning, and he averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.12 across his final five league matches, looking resurgent under Ten Hag.
However, if United sign Inacio, he could find himself further down the pecking order, with Varane, Martinez and the 21-year-old potentially ahead of him next season.
Indeed, the 21-year-old possesses a bigger attacking threat from centre-back than Lindelof, registering more shot-creating actions (1.98 to 0.4) per 90 and touches in the attacking third (140 to 35) per 90, which could be a bonus for Ten Hag.
Additionally, the Portugal international also ranks in the top 1% for progressive passes and top 3% for progressive carries across Europe’s big five leagues over the previous 365 days, with the Swede ranking in just the top 59% and 48% in the same metrics, suggesting Inacio is far better at bringing the ball out of defence and starting attacks from the back than the current United defender.
Sporting Cp's Goncalo Inacio
Journalist Zach Lowy has even dubbed the 6 foot 1 defender as “underrated” and gaining experience in the Premier League and Champions League for United next term could see the youngster break through to the next level.
Ten Hag must act sooner rather than later, as for the aforementioned price tag, the move could represent wonderful value over the coming years.
