Rohit's rampaging double-ton levels series

Rohit Sharma’s template in ODIs isn’t complicated: watchful in the first 10 overs, accumulation in the next 30 overs, and a belligerent assault in the last 10. Sri Lanka knew all about it, having conceded 264 to him in Kolkata three years ago, but he reminded them again in terrific batting conditions in Mohali. He razed his way to his third double-century in ODIs to launch India to 392 for 4, helping India level the series with a 141-run drubbing.Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer gave Rohit able company with rapid half-centuries, as India posted their 100th 300-plus total in ODIs. Angelo Mathews led Sri Lanka’s losing battle with a fighting hundred, his second in ODIs, but just like AB de Villiers’ 114 against India in Gwalior in 2010, it didn’t take much away from a stunning double-hundred.Given Mohali’s large boundaries, Sri Lanka’s response to Rohit was to take pace off the ball and try bowling short. It didn’t work. Sri Lanka’s end-overs specialists Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep then tried firing in wide yorkers. It didn’t work. Straight yorkers? Nope. Low full-tosses resulted in sixes over midwicket and square leg. As the level of intimidation went up, Sri Lanka grew increasingly helpless. So frenetic was the pace of the final third of Rohit’s innings that he scored more than half of his unbeaten 208 in the last 10 overs. He had nudged his way to his 16th ODI century by the end of the 40th, and then went on to thump 107 more off his final 37 balls. He scored 144, close to 70% of his runs, square on either side of the wicket.India scored 147 in the last 10 overs. Nuwan Pradeep came close to Mick Lewis’ record of most runs conceded in an ODI, but finished seven runs short, ending at 10-0-106-0.Confidence is arguably the most influential factor in sport. Any team is bound to be tentative after slumping to 29 for 7 in their previous game. So when India were put in to bat in hazy conditions, Rohit and Dhawan put away their attacking instincts, allowing Sri Lanka’s in-form seamers to win the first Powerplay: they scored just 33 in the first 10 overs.Apart from their ability to steal singles with soft hands in the Powerplay, Rohit and Dhawan are also proficient because they prefer different lengths. Dhawan sits back and waits for bowlers to err on the short side, and Rohit favours the fuller length when they compensate. For 10 overs, Sri Lanka found the perfect length in-between.As fatigue crept in and new bowlers took time to settle, they erred too often. India’s run-rate rose from a little over three to above five in a few overs thereafter. Dhawan was particularly productive square on either side of the wicket, hitting nine fours before shovelling a flick to midwicket off Sachith Pathirana. After cruising to fifty, Rohit chose only the errant deliveries to attack. But India’s run-rate remained lofty due to Iyer’s belligerence. After moving quietly to 11 off 15, he chipped down the track off Pathirana and hit him over mid-on despite not getting to the pitch of the ball. Sri Lanka changed their length, and Iyer pounced on width.Iyer led the charge after Rohit’s ton. He displayed the strong bottom-handed power that has almost become a requisite in modern ODI batting. He also showed off his touch, guiding and scything balls either side of point. He eventually holed out for 88 off 70 balls, an innings that featured nine fours and two sixes, in the the 46th over, but the damage had been done. The chase fizzled out early, as Sri Lanka labored their way to 41 for 2 in the first 10 overs. Upul Tharanga slapped a catch to cover and Danushka Gunathilaka was strangled down the leg side. Lahiru Thirimanne’s horror form continued, managing just 21 runs off 34 balls before attempting a premeditated reverse-sweep off debutant Washington Sundar, who struck off his ninth ball in ODIs.Sri Lanka’s middle order, led by Mathews, batted with intent and aggression. Niroshan Dickwella and Asela Gunaratne contributed brisk cameos, but were dismissed trying to keep up with an asking rate that soared past 10 runs per over with more than half the innings remaining. When he could, Mathews stepped out to hit over the in-field. When he couldn’t, he used his wrists and bottom hand to wriggle out runs on the leg side. He hit 72 of his unbeaten 111 on the leg side, accounting for 65% of his runs.

O Furacão deu nove finalizações no segundo tempo diante do Botafogo.

Batting again 'Smith's call' – Starc

Mitchell Starc said that Steven Smith did not consult his fast bowlers before opting not to enforce the follow-on on the third day of the second Ashes Test

Daniel Brettig at Adelaide Oval04-Dec-2017Mitchell Starc revealed that Australia’s captain Steven Smith did not consult with his pace bowlers before deciding not to enforce the follow-on ahead of the night session on the third day of the Adelaide Ashes Test. With a 215-run lead, Smith could have sent Joe Root’s Englishmen back in to bat a second time in the evening, but instead chose to bat again and extend the lead. James Anderson and Chris Woakes then moved the pink ball around under lights to claim four wickets, including those of Smith and David Warner, before the close.”We didn’t [get asked] tonight. He’s the captain, he makes the decisions,” Starc said when asked whether the bowlers were consulted about their willingness to bowl again. “There’s two full night sessions to go – we had a tough session with the bat but there’s a lot of cricket to go and a lot of batting in the sheds with Shaun and Tim. But in terms of the follow-on it’s all up to Smithy.”We know the night sessions are the toughest, but to be four down, we still know we’ve got a good lead and there’s two night sessions to go. Once the sun comes out tomorrow it’s the easiest time to bat through the day so we’ll get some runs there and build on our lead and then some exciting cricket to come.”[There are] pros and cons to both decisions I’m sure and we’ll look to build on our lead, give the bowlers a bit of extra time to come out fit and firing for that second innings and hopefully knock them over.”Starc pointed out that rain on the second evening had reduced the amount of time England needed to bat against the pink ball on a pitch juiced up by evening moisture. Equally he said Australia, who bowled a decidedly full length when they got their chance with the ball, had noted how the visitors had missed the chance to take wickets earlier in the game by bowling too short.”England have only had to [bat at night] for 10 overs so far and if they really want to win this Test match they’re going to have to go through two night sessions, so great signs for us with the ball if you look at that session we just saw with the bat,” Starc said. “With a lead of 260 going into a day session, we’re still very much in the driver’s seat.”We did mention watching from the change rooms they did bowl a lot shorter than they would’ve liked and we saw after that first session they made an effort to bowl fuller and brought dismissals into the game. That’s something we spoke about as a bowling group, making sure we bowled a fuller length throughout the whole innings. They’ve got their length sorted now but that’s also something we can take on for our stuff as the game goes on as well.”

New Zealand will need a new wicketkeeper for the opening Test against West Indies in Wellington after BJ Watling was forced to relinquish the gloves due to his ongoing hip problem. The uncapped Tom Blundell is favourite to take the role although the decision won’t be confirmed until after the New Zealand A match against West Indies.Watling, who has not kept wicket in the last four Plunket Shield matches for Northern District, will remain part of the squad and could be considered as a specialist batsman. If he misses out completely it will be the first Test he is absent from since England at Headingley in 2013.The New Zealand A squad for the warm-up match has also been hit by injury and illness with Martin Guptill (hamstring), Colin Munro (ill), Adam Milne (back) and Scott Kuggeleijn (ill) all withdrawing.

Tottenham: Lo Celso Update Emerges Before Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has issued a Spurs injury update on midfielder Giovani Lo Celso before their clash with Burnley today.

Tottenham team news vs Burnley

Spurs have started the new Premier League campaign with aplomb; remaining unbeaten over their trio of opening league matches.

Postecoglou has also had to cope without the presence of star striker Harry Kane, who sealed a multi-million pound move to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham's first match without Kane saw them nick a 2-2 draw away to Brentford on the opening day; a result which was followed by subsequent 2-0 wins over Man United and Bournemouth respectively.

Postecoglou's brand of open, fluid and attacking football has also earned praise from sections of the media, like Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane, who revered the Australian's "simple" yet effective approach.

Ange Postecoglou

"He doesn't complicate the game, does he? He keeps it very simple," said Keane on Sky (via Glasgow Times) after Tottenham's victory over United.

"Obviously we've seen the stuff before at his previous clubs, particularly when he was with Celtic and a lot of the stuff he's saying is just common sense.

"And maybe a club like Spurs and the Tottenham players needed that. Listen, we can all complicate the game but he seems to simplify it very well."

It's been a very promising start to the Postecoglou era and Spurs' new head coach has been boosted by the summer arrivals of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, forward Brennan Johnson and striker Alejo Veliz.

Next up, the Lilywhites travel to take on newly-promoted Burnley at Turf Moor, a match which could represent a tough test if Spurs aren't totally firing.

Postecoglou will be looking to maintain Tottenham's imperious start to the new season, but as per the former Celtic head coach, he will be without one man.

Lo Celso, who is now rumoured to be in the manager's plans despite summer exit reports, was also praised by Postecoglou during Spurs' pre-season summer tour of the Far East.

The Argentine, who clinched a World Cup winner's medal with his country last year in Qatar, is set to miss today's battle with Burnley through injury.

However, in more positive news for Spurs, Lo Celso's injury isn't believed to be serious.

“From the other night, the only one who is missing is Gio Lo Celso," said Postecoglou (via football.london).

"He got a quad strain which is why we took him off at half-time. Nothing too serious but with the international break coming [there’s time to recover].”

What's been said about Lo Celso?

If there is any time for Lo Celso to eventually battle his way into the Tottenham team, it's now, as Postecoglou is indeed a fan of the South American.

The 27-year-old's quality is arguably there, with former teammate Geronimo Rulli even once calling Lo Celso a "top player in the world".

"He gives us a plus as a team," said Rulli to Super Deporte during Lo Celso's 2022 loan spell at Villarreal.

"He helps us improve and I don’t discover anything by saying that he is a top player in the world. I know him well as a player and a person, so I hope he does very well."

Man United Boss Ten Hag Now Expected To Sign "Underrated" Defender

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is moving closer to being able to add another defender to the ranks this summer before the transfer window closes, according to reports.

Who could Manchester United sign or sell before the window closes?

This window, Manchester United have managed to secure the additions of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford and there could be more arrivals to come in the next week or so.

Despite this, the Red Devils have produced two sub-par displays in their opening Premier League fixtures, recording a fortuitous 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of the campaign at home followed by a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in north London, as per Sky Sports.

Next up for Manchester United is a home tie against Nottingham Forest this weekend and they will have to do without £60 million signing Mount, who has suffered a knock and will be out until after the international break, according to The Daily Mail.

In terms of recruitment, Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been mentioned in connection with a surprise move to Old Trafford; however, it is more likely that Manchester United will wait until January to advance for the England international due to his ban from football activity for breaching the FA's betting rules, according to FootballTransfers.

ESPN understand that Ten Hag is looking to add a midfielder and a goalkeeper before the close of play, though player sales will be needed to spark any potential incomings.

Donny van de Beek, Eric Bailly, Brandon Williams and Dean Henderson may all leave the Premier League giants this summer and any funds secured for their services are likely to go towards reinforcements, while shifting Harry Maguire off the books is also a priority.

Manchester United winger Facundo Pellestri is in talks over a loan move to Sheffield United and despite being pleased by his progress, they see a move to Bramall Lane as an opportunity for the youngster to gain regular first-team experience, according to The Manchester Evening News.

Is Jean-Clair Todibo joining Manchester United?

According to L'Equipe cited via Sport Witness, Manchester United are keen on a younger Maguire replacement in the shape of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo – and his exit from the Ligue 1 outfit is said to be 'looming'.

Nice actually now expect their star man will leave and are already looking at replacements – they have identified Rennes star Christopher Wooh as an alternative that can strengthen their backline as they prepare for Todibo to head to Manchester United, as per the report.

Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Labelled as "underrated" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig earlier this year, Todibo has gone on to make 104 appearances across all competitions in his time at Nice, registering two goals in total, as per Transfermarkt.

For a defender, Todibo has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of successful take-ons, averaging 0.63 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the 96th percentile for this metric, according to FBRef.

It remains to be seen whether Todibo's prospective arrival would further unsettle Maguire and impact his future at Old Trafford; nevertheless, there is no doubt that the former Barcelona man would be an upgrade and hopefully replace the England international.

Akash Gill's 120 leads Canada past PNG

ScorecardFaisal Jamkhandi runs in to bowl•ICC/Getty Images

Akash Gill held Canada together with a splendid century – at better than a-run-a-ball – to see off Papua New Guinea in the Under-19 World Cup match in Lincoln. Gill was the first Canada player to score a hundred at a Under-19 World Cup.He took a scoreline that read 82 for 4 in the 18th over – with their captain and in-form batsman Arslan Khan back in the pavilion – and dragged it all the way to 247 before he was dismissed. His 120 off 115 balls with 15 fours and two sixes as well.Set a target of 266, PNG struggled to mount any sort of challenge. At one end, opener Simon Atai fought hard, making 81 off 117 balls with six fours, but the other one was a revolving door. There were six single-digit scores as PNG fell from 140 for 2 in the 35th to 185 all out. The damage was mostly done by fast bowler Faisal Jamkhandi, who took 3 for 48, and left-arm spinner Aran Pathmanathan, who finished with 3 for 23.Gill, the Man of the Match, said: “I didn’t really know about that record [the first Canada batsman with a century at the U-19 World Cup], but it’s honestly a great feeling. When I got to that milestone, I was just overwhelmed. It still feels surreal to me, I’m just letting it sink.”

Leeds could have signed prolific £18m Rutter upgrade

Leeds United comfortably endured one of the most tumultuous summers of those within the Championship, but have come out the other side with a squad certainly capable of challenging at the top of the table…

Who did Leeds nearly sign?

Daniel Farke operated well despite all the turmoil he had inherited, as whilst he made nine key additions, these signings were marred by the 15 departures, many of which had previously been first-team regulars.

Phil Hay put it best on social media when he wrote: “At one point in the summer, a senior figure at Leeds was heard to say that “everyone wants to leave” – which was pretty much how it was.”

So, to be stood in early September with a team largely filled with quality that has featured at a level above their current one should mark a success worth championing, even if they have only won once in their opening five league games.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

However, Saturday did mark a crushing realisation that they probably did miss a trick with one failed signing, as they did reportedly hold an interest in former Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer at various points throughout the summer without acting.

Therefore, it was Sheffield United who eventually won the race for his signature, with his showing against Everton enough to start paying back that lofty £18m price tag.

How good is Cameron Archer?

Whilst many were well aware of the 21-year-old’s goalscoring pedigree well before this weekend, his consistent quality and the threat he posed to the Toffees showcased his talents at a much higher level than he had previously thrived in.

cameron-archer

Having fallen behind, the Blades hit back as Archer’s arrowed finish on 33 minutes drew them level. Then, as they pushed for another, he unleashed a splendid curling effort which rebounded off the right post, struck Jordan Pickford and found the back of the net. Although not his goal, it was wholly of his creation.

His involvement in both of their only goals for the day outlined the budding importance he is set to enjoy at Bramall Lane, as he seeks to build on an outstanding loan spell last season where he scored 11 and assisted six in 20 Championship games for Middlesbrough.

It is no surprise that renowned scout Jacek Kulig lauded him as “incredibly prolific” throughout that spell, a trait that Farke would love to transfer onto his current crop of players.

What makes his particularly impressive display even more frustrating is the profligate one endured at Elland Road just after Sheffield United were held to a 2-2 draw, as the Whites failed to find the net against newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday at home.

Deploying Joel Piroe in a deeper role, despite having been signed as their new star forward, he was not there to score the countless chances they forged. In fact, having enjoyed 67% of the ball and rained down 16 shots, they missed all of the three big chances they created, via Sofascore.

Considering two of those were squandered by Georginio Rutter, who has admittedly struggled since making his club-record move in January, it seems that the Englishman would have marked far greater business.

The French youngster has scored just once across 18 games for the club, and yesterday posted a 6.5 Sofascore rating that was the worst of any of Leeds' starters.

Their failure to capture such a lethal finisher like Archer was exposed brutally yesterday, as he thrived in front of goal whilst Farke’s side pushed to break the deadlock in their game, with no success.
