WHAT NEXT FOR AL-NASSR?
Ronaldo and Co will be next seen in action on Friday as they take on Damac in another away league encounter. Despite their star man's performances this season, Al-Nassr's chances of lifting the title this season are extremely slim as they currently trail leaders Al-Hilal by 12 points.
Top-order batsman Will Fraine has left Nottinghamshire to sign a three-year contract with his home county
ESPNcricinfo staff01-Oct-2018Yorkshire have signed Will Fraine on a three-year contract. Fraine, a top-order batsman, made 11 appearances for Nottinghamshire during 2018 after signing a summer contract.Fraine was previously involved with Yorkshire’s age-group teams, and captained Durham’s MCCU team. He has been described as “a medium to long-term signing” by Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, with the club looking to rebuild after a difficult season.Notts, who have signed established batsmen Ben Slater, Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke for 2019, had offered the 22-year-old a new contract but Fraine has chosen to return to his home county.”There’s always that pull of being a Yorkie lad,” Fraine said. “All my friends speak of one day playing for Yorkshire. I never thought it would happen because I made my own way elsewhere.”It was a difficult decision but the opportunities and the place where the club is going, was too much of a pull. Settling back in with the lads that I’ve known growing up makes me very happy with the decision I’ve made.”Yorkshire have a rich history and, despite the supporters and club being aware of transition, with the new talent they’ve brought in and the existing quality that is already there, it could be a really exciting place to be within the next two or three years.”After recovering to finish fifth in the Championship, Yorkshire face a transitional period with a number of players coming and going. Opener Alex Lees has departed for Durham, while Liam Plunkett and Jack Brooks left for Surrey and Somerset respectively – although the club were buoyed by Adil Rashid signing a new one-year deal.On Fraine’s signing, Moxon said: “He’s a talented young batsman. He’s very much someone with the future in mind and hopefully he’ll develop in to an outstanding cricketer for us. He’s Yorkshire born and bred and has been in our system as a junior, so it’s good to have him back. He’s looking forward to getting back here with us and we’re looking forward to having him back with us.”We’re trying to build a squad for now and for the future. He’s a medium to long-term signing for us. He’s going to be challenging for places for us but there’s no guarantees. We see him as someone for the future and we’re building up a group of really good young batsmen that we’ll see the best of in coming years.”
Rules introduced last year will allow Pakistan to look into the option of calling up a substitute wicketkeeper in case captain Sarfraz Ahmed is unable to take the gloves on the second day of the second Test against Australia in Abu Dhabi.Sarfraz was hit on his left forearm by a Mitchell Starc short ball when he was on 90, in the 70th over of Pakistan’s innings. After getting some treatment, he batted on for a couple of overs before holing out off Marnus Labuschange for 94.He then kept wicket for the seven overs Australia batted, not looking comfortable, but still taking an excellent, diving leg-side catch to dismiss Usman Khawaja. When he turned up at the end of the day to speak to media, it was with an icepack strapped to his left forearm.”The arm is not moving properly,” he said. “It’s a bruise, but I think it will have swelling later. I think Mickey [Arthur] was talking to the umpires about a reserve wicketkeeper tomorrow. That time when I was hit, I felt pain, but I hung on because I was approaching my century.”I think had it been more forceful, then I would not have been able to bat properly after that, but I hope that with icing, it will get better.”The MCC, guardians of the Laws of Cricket, last year introduced a rule confirming that substitute fielders will be allowed to keep wicket should the original wicketkeeper suffer an injury during play. The umpires have to okay the change, and it is understood that match officials will allow another wicketkeeper should Sarfraz not be able to come out. That will be Mohammad Rizwan, who was part of the original 18-man Pakistan squad for this Test series. Rizwan was released before the second Test and allowed to join the Pakistan ‘A’ side, also in the UAE, to take on New Zealand ‘A’. That, however, is believed to not be an issue in allowing Rizwan to take over.In the ICC’s Test match playing conditions, clause 1.2.1 states that each captain can nominate up to six substitute fielders on the team sheet handed to the match referee before the toss.Whether or not Rizwan’s name was on that team sheet – as he had been released – is a point made moot by clause 1.2.2, which says: “Only those nominated as substitute fielders shall be entitled to act as substitute fielders during the match, unless the ICC Match Referee, in exceptional circumstances, allows subsequent additions.”Pakistan are fortunate in having Rizwan, who has played one Test, available in the first place. The usual practice, under Sarfraz’s captaincy, has been to not pick a back-up wicketkeeper in their squads. But a lack of form and concern over Sarfraz’s excessive workload meant Rizwan was selected. In the event that Sarfraz doesn’t show up, Asad Shafiq will lead Pakistan on the field.
The former Australia opener suffered a fractured spine and torn ligaments in an accident while surfing in Queensland

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has suffered fractured vertebrae and torn ligaments in an accident while surfing with his son on Stradbroke Island in Queensland. While saying he had “dodged a bullet,” Hayden, 46, posted a couple of photos on Instagram, including one where he was wearing a neck brace; the other showed lacerations on his forehead.”Just wanted to say a big thank you to all our mates on Straddie who have been so supportive,” Hayden said in his post. “Especially Ben & Sue Kelley for the fast diagnosis with MRI, CT scan. Fractured C6, torn C5,C4 ligaments safe to say I truly have dodged a bullet. Thank you everyone. On the road to recovery.” Speaking to the about the accident, Hayden said: “It was an hour into the session and we had had half dozen waves together and I got this one right-handed wave which I sort of ducked under and that is pretty much all I can remember. I wasn’t knocked out. I was speared into the top of the sandbank onto the top of my head. Then it twisted my head with my own weight and the weight of the wave. I heard this god almighty click in my neck. I did not get knocked out but I sort of came to and rolled up on my back.”It wasn’t Hayden’s first accident in Queensland. An avid surfer and sailor, Hayden was on a boat that capsized in 2000. He and two colleagues, including former Australia allrounder Andrew Symonds, eventually swam a kilometre to shore. In all, Hayden played 273 internationals for Australia between 1994 and 2008, scoring just over 15,000 runs.
Glasgow Rangers kept another clean sheet under Philippe Clement, yet a lack of ruthlessness meant the Ibrox side had to settle for a point in their latest Europa League clash.
Sparta Prague were the dominant side until the Belgian brought Danilo on and the Brazilian offered something that they had been missing throughout the opening hour or so and came close to scoring with a stunning effort that rattled the crossbar.
A point was probably a fair result in the end and Clement should be happy with the progress of his squad since taking over a couple of weeks ago. There is a long way to go until the end of the season, yet, if everyone buys into his tactical ideologies then success might not be too far away.
In the meantime, however, he will have to work his way through a hectic fixture list using the squad that Michael Beale assembled before he was sacked and some of the new arrivals have yet to really showcase their true talents.
Beale signed nine new players for Rangers during the summer
There were also several outgoings too, as the likes of Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, and Allan McGregor all left once their contracts expired, while Fashion Sakala and Glen Kamara were both sold.
Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.
Signing that many players likely meant some settling in would be required, yet with Christmas fast approaching, it looks as though a few are not cut out to succeed at the Light Blues.
Sam Lammers has scored just once across 18 appearances so far and given he had netted a grand total of six goals since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, it was a slightly strange signing by Beale in the first place.
Cyriel Dessers is another player who looks out of sorts and not good enough to be leading the line at the Gers. Rangers Review journalist Jonny McFarlane even dubbed him a “terrible signing” following his woeful display against Sparta Prague.
Against the Czech side, he completed just six passes during his spell on the pitch, while losing possession 11 times and taking zero shots, hardly a performance that merits further inclusion in the starting XI.
These two ill-fated signings may not have long left to impress at Rangers, especially with a new regime arriving, but one player who did arrive in the summer has the potential to become one of the club's key players is Jose Cifuentes.
Why Jose Cifuentes could turn into a bargain signing
During the summer, Beale was heavily invested in bringing Cifuentes to Glasgow, and with his contract due to expire at Los Angeles FC in December, the 43-year-old was trying to secure him on a knockdown price before the Premiership season began, otherwise, they would have had to wait until next year.
With just under a month left of the summer transfer window, Beale eventually signed the midfielder and he cost just £1.2m and given what he had achieved in the MLS, it could turn into a bargain deal.
Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes
During the 2022 season, Cifuentes helped lead LAFC to the MLS title. Across 36 regular season games, he registered 13 goal contributions – seven goals and six assists – while creating 11 big chances and averaging 1.3 key passes per game.
This indicated that he liked to burst forward as often as possible from the heart of the midfield in order to create opportunities for his teammates, while getting on the scoresheet when possible.
Although he had registered just four goal contributions across 19 games during the 2023 season before moving to Glasgow, the Ecuadorian is still improving, and if given time, he could end up being one of Beale’s finest signings.
Cifuentes’ value has soared since arriving at Rangers
According to Football Transfers, Cifuentes is now currently valued at €3.7m (£3.2m) and this represents a wonderful 167% rise since joining in August if he manages to secure regular game time under Clement, that valuation could increase further.
The 5 foot 8 machine has missed the previous few games due to suffering a knock on international duty with Ecuador and has yet to make an appearance under the Belgian.
Jose Cifuentes
Once he is back to full fitness, the 24-year-old could be slotted straight into the heart of the midfield in order to showcase his talents for the new head coach.
Cifuentes could still improve after an underwhelming start
The former LAFC midfielder has started ten times for the Ibrox side, yet he has registered just one assist thus far. Of course, settling into a new environment and way of life across the Atlantic will take some time, while he seemingly did not benefit from Beale’s tactical system, or lack thereof, as shown by his statistics.
Clement has already developed a style of play in which he expects his players to deliver during matches, with two wide players providing the width and midfield players bursting through the middle to provide attacking support, and this sort of stability could only benefit Cifuentes, especially with his below-par start to life at the club.
Lauded as “very dynamic” by LAFC assistant manager Marc Dos Santos, he currently ranks seventh for accurate passes per game (51.3) across the Ibrox squad in the league, while also ranking within the top ten for key passes per game (0.8) and 16th for successful dribbles per game (0.3), failing to build upon his previous two excellent campaigns in America.

Over time, the midfielder could adapt to Scottish football and begin to assert his dominance across the midfield area, especially as Clement looks to have a clear tactical philosophy that could turn the club into winners, given that the manager has won four league titles in his career.
There is no question that the Gers have struck gold on the former LAFC star, especially considering his value has increased substantially since joining just a few months ago and this could keep on rising depending on how well he does when he returns from injury.
Beale did spend vast sums of money on a few players who have lacked the required standard to shine at Rangers, most notably Lammers and Dessers, yet shelling out just £1.2m to lure Cifuentes to Scotland instead of waiting an extra few months could benefit the club a few years down the line.
Two goals to the good against a hapless Copenhagen side, Manchester United looked to be putting in a statement performance on Wednesday evening in the Champions League, with hopes of progression having been momentarily boosted following a stunning opening in Denmark.
And yet, as has been the way this season for this luckless side, the Red Devils suffered a subsequent implosion – not all of their own making – to slip to a dismal 4-3 defeat to further dent any knockout stage ambitions, the Premier League side now languishing at the bottom of Group A with just two games left to play.
It had all looked so promising when Rasmus Hojlund steered Erik ten Hag's men into a two-goal lead against his prior employers, although some contentious refereeing and VAR decisions, including Marcus Rashford's early red card, made it yet another grim night in Europe for United.
One man who particularly struggled in the Danish capital was the "erratic" Diogo Dalot – as described by journalist Samuel Luckhurst – with the Portugal international looking like exactly what he was, a makeshift left-back.
Diogo Dalot's stats vs Copenhagen
With the likes of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia still sidelined – and with Sergio Reguilon enduring his own injury woes in recent weeks – Dalot has been called upon across the last two games to slot in as an unorthodox, left-sided full-back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka reinstated on the opposite side.
Diogo Dalot
Although that tactic paid off against Fulham at the weekend as United secured a clean sheet in that 1-0 victory at Craven Cottage, the former Porto man appeared far more shaky this time around, having been particularly exposed for the home side's third of the night to draw the game level.
The 24-year-old – who was awarded a new long-term deal back in May – was caught napping at the back post as Lukas Lerager snuck in to equalise for the hosts, with that lapse in concentration undoing all the hard work that had led to Bruno Fernandes' penalty just over ten minutes earlier.
As Luckhurst noted on Twitter, the aforementioned Hojlund was one of those going "ballistic" at Dalot for his woes in the backline, with the latter man also something of a liability after losing possession on ten occasions on the night, while also failing to complete either of his two attempted crosses.
Of course, the headline-maker may be Rashford for his early dismissal, although that red card was debatable, to say the least, with Dalot forming part of a backline that rather capitulated thereafter, even despite the excuse of being a man light.
Diogo Dalot's season by numbers
It was certainly not the first time in recent weeks that Dalot has been something of a villain for the Red Devils, with the £85k-per-week asset unceremoniously hooked at half-time following an abject display in the first half of the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United last week.
That outing saw the underfire defender lose possession 11 times from just 39 touches and record a pass accuracy rate of only 73%, with ESPN's Mark Ogden noting that he is an "example of Man United’s flawed recruitment" following that dire performance.
Ogden even went on to suggest that Dalot's lengthy contract extension was merely a "long-term reward for mediocrity", with Ten Hag and co potentially set to rue that show of faith if this season is anything to go by.
It is not even as if the one-time AC Milan loanee is making up for his defensive woes in the final third, having now scored just once and provided no assists in 16 games in all competitions so far this term, hardly warranting his place in the side on a regular basis.
With Wan-Bissaka now fit and available, Dalot could soon find himself ousted once the likes of Shaw and Malacia are also in contention, with the 16-cap international – as well as Rashford and VAR – having cost United "dearly" once again last night, as per club legend, Paul Scholes, to only heighten the scrutiny on the manager.

Peter Handscomb drives through the off side•Getty Images
Peter Handscomb has made a statement to Australia’s selectors with a patient unbeaten century to put Victoria in control of the Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at the MCG.Handscomb, who lost his Test place on Australia’s tour of the UAE, capitalised on a superb 132-run opening stand from Travis Dean and Marcus Harris to grind out 123 not out from 215 balls and give Victoria a 101-run lead with two days remaining. He struck 15 boundaries in his 14th first-class century, which he brought up with lovely cover drive off Cameron Valente.Victoria at one stage looked set to pile up a huge score but Nick Winter put them back under pressure with three wickets in the space of eight overs. He found the edge of Harris’ bat before trapping Dean in front and got Cameron White caught behind for a duck as well.Handscomb and Matthew Short steadied Victoria for over 18 overs but they again slumped to 5 for 193, losing both Short and wicketkeeper Seb Gotch in quick succession before Handscomb found solid allies in James Pattinson and Peter Siddle. Pattinson made 32 after being promoted to No. 7 while Siddle contributed 13 not out from 72 deliveries in an unbeaten 55-run stand with Handscomb to take the home side through to stumps. However, Victoria’s charge to a third straight win to start the season may be hindered by some wet weather that is due in Melbourne on day three.
Leeds United have enjoyed an impressive return to Championship football as they currently sit third within the division after 16 matches this season.
The Whites were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, which ended a three-year stay in the top-flight, and reacted by appointing Daniel Farke to lead them back to glory.
He was able to bring in nine new signings to bolster his squad; including Joel Piroe, Jaidon Anthony, Karl Darlow, Glen Kamara, Joe Rodon, Ilia Gruev, Sam Byram, Djed Spence, and Ethan Ampadu.
However, Farke could take his number of new recruits this season into double figures as the Whites have recently been linked with a swoop for Ryan Kent.
TEAMtalk claimed that Leeds and Bournemouth are both interested in a deal to sign the Fenerbahce forward on loan, as the English whiz has struggled since his move to Turkey from Rangers over the summer.
Former Rangers winger Ryan Kent.
The German head coach must now secure a deal to sign the former Liverpool prospect during the January transfer window as he could be a lethal partner for Piroe at the top end of the pitch.
Piroe's season in numbers
Leeds snapped the Dutch centre-forward from Championship rivals Swansea City over the summer and he has hit the ground running with six goals and one assist in 13 league appearances.
Only Crysencio Summerville has as many league goals for the Whites this season as Piroe and this illustrates how important his strikes have been for the club.
There could be more to come from the 24-year-old whiz, though, as he plundered 19 goals for the Swans last term and an eye-catching 22 league strikes during the 2021/22 campaign, which was his debut season in English football.
Bringing in a winger like Kent could provide Piroe with another source of creativity to produce more chances for impressive forward to add to his goal tally.
The statistics that show why Kent could be a lethal partner for Piroe
During his time with Rangers, the English whiz proved himself to be a consistent creative presence for the Scottish giants and he could offer up a constant supply of opportunities for the Dutchman.
Former Rangers winger Ryan Kent.
Kent has yet to provide a goal or an assist in seven league matches for Fenerbahce this season but arrived in Turkey off the back of a return of 33 goals and 56 assists in 218 games for the Light Blues.
The 27-year-old talent racked up ten assists, alongside three goals, in 29 Scottish Premiership appearances for the Gers throughout the 2022/23 campaign.
That came after the gem produced an eye-catching 19 assists in 46 matches in all competitions for Rangers during the previous season, which showcased his ability to set up his teammates on a regular basis.
The £33k-per-week magician, who was described as a "wizard" by former teammate Leon Balogun, has not had the best of times in Turkey but previous form for the Scottish giants suggests that he could be an excellent pick-up for Leeds.
Kent could come in and offer a creative outlet out wide and another player to supply Piroe with chances at the top end of the pitch, alongside Summerville and Georgino Rutter.
