Spurs, Levy weigh Santiago Gimenez move as intermediary makes January claim

Tottenham are believed to weighing up a pretty exciting transfer option as an FA registered intermediary shares what he's heard on their 2024 plans.

Spurs seeking early January signings

As made public by Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, the Lilywhites are already hard at work ahead of the looming January window as their manager seeks to make early window signings.

Postecoglou spoke of the importance of sealing their business quickly, as he'll want these proposed new players to come in and make an impact for Spurs over what will be a busy first month of 2024.

"The reason [we want to do business early] is obviously where we're at injury-wise and the players we're going to miss," said Postecoglou to Standard Sport.

"We've got some significant games in January and signing somebody late in the month could mean they haven't been able to make an impact in those games. It is a challenge, I get that, but everyone at the club is working hard to get the best outcomes for us and we’ll see how it goes.”

According to recent rumours, Postecoglou is targeting three major signings in defence, midfield and further forward (The Mail). Spurs talks have already been held over Jean-Clair Todibo, who is currently a real figurehead at Nice as they enjoy a terrific Ligue 1 season thus far (football.london).

While centre-back is believed to be a priority, there is the small matter of replacing club-record goalscorer Harry Kane, and reports suggest Richarlison is of real interest to Saudi sides.

If the Brazilian were to leave mid-season, Tottenham would almost certainly need a new striker as they chase Champions League qualification and potential silverware.

Tottenham weighing Gimenez move

There have been a few interesting forward names linked, but perhaps one of the more exciting ones is Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The Mexico international striker has scored 18 goals in 16 Eredivisie appearances this season as one of Europe's most in-form marksmen right now.

FA registered intermediary Paul O'Keefe, a reliable source of information when it comes to news out of Tottenham, says Gimenez is one of a number of forwards the club are weighing moves for.

Indeed, Spurs are believed to be "assessing" Gimenez ahead of a potential swoop next year.

The 22-year-old is a brilliant young age for Spurs, and would seemingly slot into Postecoglou's long-term project quite nicely. Chairman Daniel Levy, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, could also strike a deal for as little as £39 million.

Gimenez, beyond his goalscoring exploits, could have the speed to do well in a division as physical as the Premier League.

“He’s back here in the middle of the defenders and he’s really fast," said former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt on Gimenez (ESPN via One Football).

Australians' one-wicket win over NZ XI marks Smith, Warner's return in yellow

The Australians, including Steven Smith and David Warner for the first time in more than a year, had to scramble for a one-wicket victory against a New Zealand XI including just five of the World Cup squad after suffering a batting collapse on the first of three practice matches at Allan Border Field.Having earlier restricted the New Zealanders to 215 they stumbled from 2 for 122 to 9 for 205 leaving the final pair of Jason Behrendorff and Adam Zampa to edge them across the line as darkness fell and save the blushes of a middle order that produced some poor shot selection. For all the excitement at the end, the result of this match won’t be hugely significant in the bigger picture but it was the latest milestone in the comeback story of Warner and Smith, pulling on the Australian colours for the first time since the Newlands ball-tampering scandal. They are likely to face more hostile crowds over the next few months than the 1000-plus of friendly local support that gathered on a public holiday. “Welcome back, Smithy” came a lone voice as the Australians took the field in the morning and both were greeted by warm applause as they walked to the crease. In England, however, things are expected to be a bit different. One of the more intriguing aspects of the day was a small message in how Warner was used: it doesn’t matter how good your form is, you may have to take on a new position in the team as he was slotted in at No. 3 despite only once in 104 ODI innings having not opened. As it was, Warner arrived at the crease in the first over of the chase when Usman Khawaja was bowled by Matt Henry playing an expansive drive and, after an iffy start where he was dropped at gully before scoring, cantered his way to 39 off 43. Smith, who earlier took a terrific one-handed diving catch that will have given the troublesome elbow a good test, got himself settled before falling for 22 and the innings stuttered.Marcus Stoinis was caught behind from a loose drive, Shaun Marsh slashed to gully and Alex Carey nicked a wild shot to leave it to the bowlers. Nathan Coulter-Nile tried to muscle the Australians over the line but was lbw to Todd Astle with 11 still needed.David Warner takes the field•Getty Images

In the weeks leading up to Warner and Smith returning, Australia strung together eight consecutive ODI wins. One of the key parts of that was the success Khawaja and Aaron Finch had together at the top of the order. What the top order looks like at the World Cup remains one of the questions Australia need to answer. In all likelihood various combinations will be used during the three matches against New Zealand, and the odds still favour Warner opening come the tournament, but the fact he didn’t get first crack was a reminder that nothing can be taken for granted.Warner didn’t quite middle everything from the off, perhaps still adjusting to the change in conditions from the IPL to Brisbane. He almost spooned his first ball close to backward point then nearly offered a return catch to Henry, who should have had him in his next over when Daryl Mitchell spilled a chance at gully, but was soon dispatching deliveries to the boundary. He took a particularly liking to anything Doug Bracewell dropped short before trying something a little too inventive off Astle and top edged a reverse sweep.Smith had been given a tough net session by the Australian quicks yesterday but looked reasonably assured in the middle, one straight in particular standing out, until he was caught behind off Henry as Australia’s collapse was set in motion. The player who was a shining light for the men’s team during a difficult home summer, Pat Cummins, had got the day off to a lively start when he struck twice in the opening over to send back George Worker and Henry Nicholls. From there, the New Zealanders recovered impressively through a third-wicket stand of 137 between Will Young and Tom Blundell. Young, recently handed a central contract, is the next in line behind the incumbent batsmen while Blundell earned the final spot in the World Cup squad when he was preferred ahead of Tim Seifert as back-up wicketkeeper. After laying a foundation following the early losses both started to expand their strokeplay; Blundell launched Behrendorff into the grandstand over deep square and Young later peppered the same area. However, when Young clubbed Coulter-Nile to deep midwicket and Blundell fell four overs later and the innings went into a nosedive as the New Zealanders lost 8 for 78.Cummins, Behrendorff and Coulter-Nile each finished with three wickets while Adam Zampa nipped out Mitchell with a stumping. Kane Richardson, who is one of the standby pacemen for the World Cup along with Josh Hazlewood, and would be in line for a call-up if Jhye Richardson doesn’t recover from his dislocated shoulder, went wicketless and will hope for another chance in the next two matches. Australia will hope to bat better.

Dyche must bench 4/10 Everton man for £73k-p/w "warrior" after Wolves defeat

Everton were on an incredible run of form ever since losing 3-0 at home to Manchester United after the November international break. The Toffees managed to go on a four-game winning streak, keeping clean sheets in all four which was the first time the club managed to do so since November 2002.

However, the Merseyside club are now on a four-match losing streak and could find themselves inside the Premier League relegation zone within the next fortnight should this spell continue.

The side’s 3-0 defeat away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday certainly brought Everton straight back down to earth and may have caused head coach Sean Dyche to question his starting lineup.

Nathan Patterson’s performance in numbers

One of the players who stuck out like a sore thumb for their dismal display at Molineux was Nathan Patterson.

Dyche switched his team up from the one that lost 3-1 against Manchester City in midweek, bringing Michael Keane back into the fold over midfielder Andre Gomes, changing his formation from a 4-4-1-1 to a 5-4-1. As a result, Patterson was deployed as a right wingback, but the tactical tweak certainly didn’t have the desired effect the manager hoped it would have.

nathan-patterson-everton-sean-dyche-premier-league-james-garner-england

During the game, Patterson lost 60% of his ground duels, was dribbled past once, made merely two passes into the final third and failed to whip a single accurate cross into the box, according to FotMob.

Furthermore, the Scotland international was beaten to the ball twice for Wolves’ first two goals and also picked up an early booking for a foul on Joao Gomes when the match was goalless, rendering him idle for the remainder.

Additionally, Patterson lost possession of the ball 13 times and managed to record fewer touches of the ball than the goalkeeper, with 43 to Jordan Pickford’s 47, before eventually being whipped off by the manager in the 63rd minute when the game was 3-0 to the hosts.

It was a night to forget for the 22-year-old, who was handed a match rating of 4/10 by the Liverpool Echo, but his replacement had a far more assured performance.

Seamus Coleman’s stats this season

Club captain Seamus Coleman made just his second appearance of the season on Saturday, coming on for Patterson with less than a half-hour remaining. However, Wolves didn’t score while he was on the pitch and were much more assured down the right.

The £73k-per-week defender won 67% of his ground duels during his time on the pitch and made five passes into the final third which was more than Patterson in half the time, while also making six ball recoveries in total.

The Republic of Ireland skipper has been a reliable servant for Everton since joining the club over a decade ago, with former manager Frank Lampard even describing Coleman as a “warrior” when he was in charge.

In addition, the veteran has played as a centre-back 11 times throughout his career. This means that Coleman offers Dyche a positional flexibility that Patterson doesn’t possess to switch between a back three and a back four in-game.

While Patterson may be the future of Everton, Coleman has proved that he can still do a job at Goodison Park and may have played his way into the starting lineup ahead of next week’s FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace.

Sunderland make offer to sign top target for Beale in transfer development

Ahead of a crucial few months in the race to secure a Championship play-off spot, Sunderland are looking to land an attacking reinforcement in Michael Beale's first transfer window at the club. And with that, they've now reportedly made an offer to sign a Premier League forward.

Sunderland transfer news

Sunderland's search for a striker has taken them down several routes. Reports have linked the Black Cats with the likes of Macaulay Langstaff after his rise in recent years at Notts County, as well as Sam Gallagher from Blackburn Rovers as Beale looks to form an attack capable of reaching the Premier League. To do that, however, the former Rangers boss needs Premier League quality, which has seen Sunderland turn their attention back towards a first-tier forward.

Latest Sunderland transfer news: Bellingham latest as SAFC eye Euro starlet

As the manager hunt rumbles on, who could Sunderland be looking to add to their team this summer?

ByBrogan Clasper Jun 7, 2024

According to Adam Leventhal of The Athletic, Sunderland have now made a loan offer for Kieffer Moore from Bournemouth, but an agreement is yet to be reached for their top target. Those at The Stadium of Light reportedly offered to pay a percentage of Moore's wages in a proposal that was not deemed good enough by the Cherries, who consider the Wales international an important player.

Given his lack of game-time, however, Bournemouth could yet sanction a move this month. Sunderland will have to be convincing, with Ipswich Town also reportedly making an offer to sign Moore this month and former club Cardiff City enquiring over a deal for the striker.

"Excellent" Moore has invaluable Championship experience

If Sunderland can secure a move for the Bournemouth forward this month, he could prove to be an instant difference-maker. Moore's Championship stats prove that he's more than capable of making an impact in England's second tier, with 47 goals and 14 assists in 155 appearances in the same division that the Black Cats are looking to earn promotion from.

The Welshman is in desperate need of a move for the sake of game-time too, having featured just seven times in the Premier League all season thanks to the electric form of Dominic Solanke. A Championship switch for Moore could yet turn a season to forget into one to savour, however, particularly if Sunderland get their wish.

Former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil was full of praise for Moore's journey from Non-League to the Premier League, saying back in 2022 after the forward earned a World Cup place for Wales:

“It is a remarkable story. He's been excellent. Another one that we've done loads of work with.

"He's worked his socks off in training, he's managed to get himself into a good place, really pleased with him. I mean, I never had the privilege, wasn't good enough to go to a World Cup. I'm delighted that some of our boys are. It must be an amazing experience.”

Now, if the Welshman does get a Sunderland move this month, he could find himself playing on the big stage once again with a trip to Wembley potentially awaiting, should the Black Cats reach the play-offs and then go as far as the final come the end of the campaign.

Dinesh Karthik's 97* in vain after Riyan Parag and Jofra Archer's late fireworks

Chasing 176, Rajasthan Royals slipped to 123 for six before their seventh-wicket pair turned the tide with a partnership of 44 in 21 balls

The Report by Mohammad Isam25-Apr-20191:20

We are aware our bowling needs to get better – Dinesh Karthik

After Riyan Parag’s stunning 47 took Rajasthan Royals within striking distance of their fourth win, Jofra Archer signed off his blockbuster IPL campaign with successive boundaries to complete a three-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders. It was the sixth consecutive loss for the home side, who failed to defend a total of 175 that was primarily achieved thanks to Dinesh Karthik’s valiant 97 not out.Riyan and Archer added a crucial 44 for the seventh wicket, with Riyan hitting five fours and two sixes in his 31-ball 47. Archer was left to score nine off the last over. First he edged Prasidh Krishna for a four through third man, and then he smacked him over wide long-off for the winning runs.It was heartbreak for Karthik who had batted so well for his unbeaten 97 off 50 balls, which contained nine sixes and seven fours, an innings that led Knight Riders’ recovery from early trouble, mainly caused by Varun Aaron.

Aaron from nowhereAaron, who had conceded 16 runs in his only over in this season’s IPL, had little to lose when he was brought back into the side and handed the new ball by Royals captain Steven Smith. He struck straightaway, bowling Chris Lynn with an inducker in the first over and dismissing Shubman Gill with a similar delivery in the fifth over. His first spell of 3-1-10-2 prevented the Knight Riders from making a quick start.Royals “drop” their guardKnight Riders lost Nitish Rana too and struggled to 49 for 3 at the halfway mark. The first cracks in Royals’ effort appeared when Stuart Binny misfielded at the deep midwicket boundary in the 11th over, which went for 25. Karthik had struck Shreyas Gopal for two sixes and three fours in the over.Binny then dropped Andre Russell in the 15th over before substitute Prashant Chopra shelled another Russell skier, in the 17th over. Russell’s third offering was taken well by Ajinkya Rahane at deep midwicket later in the over, and Royals were lucky the in-form West Indian only managed 14 off 14.Karthik’s solo actKarthik, who was stuck in Knight Riders’ slowness in the first 10 overs, took full toll of Royals in the second half of the innings, hitting 55 of the Knight Riders’ 75 in the last five overs. He slammed Jaydev Unadkat for three sixes, including two in the last over, sent a free-hit from Oshane Thomas sailing over long-on in the 17th, and carted the last two balls of Archer’s IPL campaign, in the 19th over, for sixes as well..It was an almost single-handed effort from Karthik to take Knight Riders to 175; their second-highest score was Nitish Rana’s 21 off 26 at No. 3Jofra Archer and Riyan Parag meet mid-pitch•BCCI

Royals slip to spinSanju Samson began Royals’ chase with sixes off Prasidh Krishna and Russell in the first two overs, before Ajinkya Rahane smashed Prithvi Raj over point for his first six. But Sunil Narine had him lbw in the last over of the Powerplay, after the openers had added 53 for the first wicket. The wicket brought another when Piyush Chawla removed Samson with a wrong’un. Narine came back from the other end to bowl Royals captain Steven Smith for 2, and could have had another in the same over had he held onto a return catch from Riyan. The stranglehold of spin continued, however, as Chawla took the wickets of Stokes and Binny, and Royals sank to 98 for 5 in the 13th over.Riyan announces himselfRiyan let the batsman at the other end do more of the hitting in his first three partnerships, and moved quietly to 22 off 21. But after Archer slammed Narine for a six in the 17th over, Parag sprung into action. He slammed Prasidh Krishna for a hooked six, before hammering Russell over the straight boundary, only just beating the outstretched Brathwaite at long-on.But he fell next ball when he hooked Russell but flicked the bails in his follow-through. That left nine to win, and Archer, duly completed the job with two decisive blows in the last over.

Kobbie Mainoo opens up on iconic goal celebration with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund and admits he gategrashed Argentine's plan to mimic Cristiano Ronaldo

Midfielder reveals inside track on celebrationTeenager a regular for United & EnglandIn bullish mood before FA Cup finalWHAT HAPPENED?

The young trio sat on an advertising board after Garnacho scored against West Ham in February, making for an iconic photo which offered hope for the future during an otherwise awful season for United. But Mainoo revealed that the celebration was not planned, as Garnacho copied his idol Cristiano Ronaldo with the celebration.

AdvertisementWHAT MAINOO SAID

"I always ask Garna before the game what's the celebration gonna be if he scores. And he said he wasn't gonna tell me. So he was like: 'I'm not telling you, I'm not telling you.' So I'm like: 'Okay.' I saw him jump up on the advertising board when he scored and me and Rasmus just jumped up there with him," Mainoo told reporters. "He wanted it for himself! But we jumped in there and it was a nice picture. All of us young guys, with Amad as well, we have a lot of fun together and we've definitely grown close this season."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Mainoo has had a stunning breakthrough season with United despite being forced to miss the start of the campaign after injuring his ankle in pre-season. He made his debut against Everton in November and his consistent performances since have led to him quickly locking down his place in Erik ten Hag's starting line-up and then earning a call-up to the England squad ahead of Euro 2024.

"Obviously I got the injury but it’s happened so quickly. It’s been a season of ups and downs but to end it with another final is still a dream come true as a boyhood fan of the club," he said. "Back then I wasn’t even thinking about England, I was just thinking about getting fit and getting back in the squad really, not even the starting XI."

DID YOU KNOW?

Mainoo admitted that United are motivated by thoughts of revenge as they prepare to meet Manchester City in the FA Cup final, one year after losing to their neighbours at Wembley. He said: "Yeah 100%. We are not coming to take part, we are coming to win and we know they are doing amazing at the moment but we have to prepare as best we can to give ourselves the best chance of winning."

Wolves reply as major club make contact with bid to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in an impressive vein of form; however, Gary O'Neil could now have a fight on their hands to keep hold of a star player, according to a report.

Wolves in quiet transfer window

There has been an element of serenity so far this January as Wolves keep calm and try to quietly conclude deals before the end of the window; however, they are still yet to make any mid-season signings. Reports from The Guardian claim that Chelsea striker Armando Broja has become a target at Molineux and his future at Stamford Bridge is likely to depend on whether his side bring in another striker this month.

In his quest to add new options in attack, O'Neil would be likely to try and sanction a loan deal with an option to buy for the Albania international. AC Milan and Napoli have been keen on his signature in the past, with any sale potentially being handy for Chelsea as he would count as a pure profit sale that would aid their Financial Fair Play obligations.

OGC Nice midfielder Pablo Rosario is also believed to be on the Old Gold's radar while Fulham, West Ham United and Brentford are also keen on his signature. Over the last few months, Wolves have scouted the 27-year-old regularly and have been impressed with his output. On the flip side, Stuttgart and Werder Bremen have also registered their interest, creating a scenario where up to six clubs could fight it out to sign the Netherlands international.

Despite links to potential additions, Wolves could now face a fight to keep hold of a star player and they have reportedly placed a hefty price-tag on his head.

Wolves receive Rayan Ait-Nouri bid

According to Football Transfers, Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri is attracting interest from Premier League high-flyers Arsenal and Liverpool, with the former intensifying their efforts to recruit in the position by actually bidding for the Algeria international.

The outlet claim that a fee of over £50 million may be enough for the Old Gold to sanction his exit this month, but they have swiftly rejected the Gunners' first attempt, and any potential move would likely encounter complications due to his involvement on international duty, which could keep him out until mid-February.

Labelled "phenomenal" by journalist Tim Spiers, the 23-year-old has made 19 appearances this campaign encompassing all competitions (Ait-Nouri statistics – Transfermarkt).

In impressive fashion, Ait-Nouri has also managed 2.1 tackles, 1.1 clearances and 4.7 ball recoveries on average per fixture in the Premier League and has subsequently become a vital component of O'Neil's tactical framework.

Losing his services at this stage of the season would be a bitter blow for Wolves and they should look to reject all approaches for his signature in the coming weeks.
