Ban or not, David Warner a T20 leader for Australia

Knowledge gained from the IPL and an ability to move through the gears with the bat gives him a vital role

Whatever the letter of David Warner’s lifetime ban from leadership positions in Australian cricket, he was never going to be left out of the team’s tactical thinking.Apart from the fact it is nigh on impossible to picture Warner sitting quietly in the corner minding his own business while the national team’s campaign for next year’s T20 World Cup is constructed, he is one of the squad’s most agile minds in the shortest format. After all, only one current Australian cricketer can boast of captaining a winning IPL team, and that is Warner with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. His thoughts on Australia’s build up are many.To that end Warner has taken a central role in discussing the many and varied permutations for the team led by captain Aaron Finch and coach Justin Langer. As one of several members of the team to play all three formats consistently, he has ample opportunities to do so.ALSO READ: After the boos, Warner returns home to love and adulationThe reality of the higgledy piggledy international schedule is such that planning for one format must often take place while playing another, meaning that Warner’s rich source of experience and ideas has been useful to Australia’s’ T20 planners for quite some time before the squad assembled in Adelaide last week.”It’s massive for us all these games for us leading into the World Cup,” Warner said after his first T20I hundred. “The thing we can take out of this is sticking to our game plans and we’re going to be playing at all those venues. So you’ve got to work out where you’re going to hit the ball, the boundaries, what gaps you’re going to hit, what bowlers you’re going to take on in the first six overs. Those are the things you got to think about when you’re out there.”Same with our bowlers, with how they structure. There’s going to be a lot of off-pace into the wicket, and a lot of short balls into the wicket, and it’s about us as batters work out and learning off our bowlers as well about how they’re trying to bowl at the opposition because we’re going to get that as well.”Among the most intriguing elements of the T20 scenario confronting Australia and the rest next year is that by its nature, the type of cricket required to succeed at home will contrast markedly to that of the IPL, even if it is the world’s pre-eminent tournament in the format. Warner summed this up by noting how much more critical it was to maintain a high fitness level in Australia, where bigger grounds and slower outfields mean that strong running between the wickets, particularly in search of twos, is vital.David Warner sends one over the leg side•Getty Images

“As a batter, it’s pretty simple. You have to have at the back of your mind a plan when you’re going out there. For me, it’s targeting straight, the sightscreen, not try and play too many cross-batted shots and being positive running between wickets,” he said. “That’s the element to our game here in Australia if you want to win the World Cup next year, you’ve got to run really hard between the wickets. We’ve got big boundaries here. It’s not like in the IPL where if you don’t want to run, you can stand and deliver. But in my game I have a strong emphasis on running between wickets and rotating the strike. I think that’s very important.”The flip side of this need for fitness and running is how, given a good start, it is relatively simple in Australia to get into a rhythm on true pitches and hit with something approaching impunity, big boundaries or not. The ease with which the hosts entered “beast mode” against Sri Lanka’s bowlers at Adelaide Oval, pummelling their way to the highest ever T20I score for Australia at home, was pointed out by Warner as an example of how a steady build with wickets in hand would generally work well.”I think you saw it out there first-hand if you are 0 for 60 then you can post a big total without taking too many risks. You saw the ease with which Maxi came in and used the pace of the wicket. There’re going to be very good wickets so as batters you don’t need to over-hit the ball here in Australia.”At the same time, Warner acknowledged the balance he strikes each innings with Finch, who at a career strike rate of 156.58 has proven himself some 15 runs per 100 balls more effective at taking the bowlers on than his longtime opening partner. Not getting too caught up in catching up, in a manner of speaking, is vital to Warner’s method.”It’s not a conscious effort. But if he gets three or four away, and I get only one ball at the other end, then I’ve only faced only a couple of balls,” Warner said. “It’s very hard to get rhythm. If I get the ball there that I can put away, I can obviously do that. But you’ve got to play that situation. If he’s hit two or three boundaries and gets off strike, you’ve already won the over.”There’s no need for me to go hammer and tongs. I can just play the way I do and get him on strike and that’s how it pans out. That’s the natural game plan if I get out, he bats deep. If he gets out, I’ll try and bat deep. That’s how the top-order always thinks.”Of course, should the quick and wickets-in-hand start not eventuate, Warner had an apt descriptor for Steven Smith, who on Sunday spent most of his time shuffling down the batting order while bigger hitters took precedence.”I call him the fixer. He can just sit there and do what he wants. If anything goes wrong then he comes in,” Warner said. “Everyone’s got their roles and he knows his role very well. It’s a bit similar to Rooty [Joe Root] in the one-dayers for England. You’ve obviously got to have someone to come in and steer the ship.”Warner, it is clear, is not permitted to captain Australia again. But that edict does not preclude him from the ability to lead.

Rodman, Smith and Jaedyn Shaw fit into that category, and they are being challenged to become the next national team icons. Christen Press has told , with 224-cap forward Morgan being overlooked: “You’re talking about the face of the team, and that’s a role and that’s a responsibility. So you’re talking about a player that not only has to perform and be outstanding and generally score goals, but also has to really represent the team off the field. It’s the person who gets all the sponsorships, it’s the person that does all the press conferences. There’s kind of a plight to that and then there’s obviously a lot of economic upside and stardom and fame, so there’s good and bad and ugly.

“Alex not being on the roster is a very interesting place for the team because if you think of the U.S. women’s national team history, you’ve got Mia [Hamm], Abby [Wambach], Alex and all of these players really bled into each other and before the player rolled off, the next one had already emerged. But with the last World Cup performance being so poor, and without any of the players really having that big moment, there’s kind of this vacancy and it’s a huge opportunity looking into this tournament. Who’s going to rise to the occasion?”

Update on Newcastle’s interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

Newcastle United are believed to be back in the race to sign a "phenomenal" player this summer, with Eddie Howe personally a big admirer of him.

Newcastle transfer news

PIF are expected to have the cash available to make some significant signings at the end of the season despite Financial Fair Play pressure, as they look to kick on after a poor campaign overall. It looks as though Howe is targeting players all over the pitch, looking to build a more formidable squad that is capable of handling the many injuries that have come their way throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Juventus youngster Samuel Iling-Junior is a player who is wanted by various Premier League clubs, including Everton and Tottenham, and Newcastle are also very much in the mix to sign him. The Englishman can excel at left-back and in a more attacking role, and could be viewed as a long-term replacement for Dan Burn, as well as providing competition further up the field.

Omar Marmoush is another individual who is reportedly wanted by the Magpies in the summer transfer window, having led the line impressively for Eintracht Frankfurt this season. He has scored 10 goals in 20 starts in the Bundesliga, and is being eyed up as an exciting strike partner for Alexander Isak, who remains a key figure moving forward.

Links surrounding a move for Italy and Juve winger Federico Chiesa are also refusing to go away, with the attacker out of contract in Turin next year, meaning the Serie A giants could be willing to part ways with him in 2024.

Newcastle still want to sign "phenomenal" goalkeeper

According to a new update from The Daily Mail, Newcastle are back in the race to sign Aaron Ramsdale in the summer transfer window, as the Arsenal goalkeeper looks likely to seal a move away from the Emirates. He has been linked with a switch to St James' Park in the past but the Gunners didn't want to sell him to a rival, so that seems to have now changed.

The Magpies have reportedly "rekindled their interest" in the Englishman, who is "assessing his options" after losing his place to David Raya throughout this season. Howe is a "big admirer", having worked with him at Bournemouth.

There is no denying that Ramsdale's stock has fallen significantly over the past nine months or so, having impressed so much for Arsenal last season, en route to them nearly winning the Premier League title. Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he favours Raya over him, and the England international will surely have decided that he needs to move on in the summer.

The 25-year-old could certainly be a strong option for Newcastle, however, should a move appeal to him, providing great competition for Pope. Meanwhile, Gunners legend David Seaman said of him last year: "People forget he’s only 24. So that is amazing for me because I didn’t join Arsenal until I was 26 – what he’s doing now at 24 is just phenomenal."

Admittedly, there is the risk that Ramsdale finds himself in the same position as he does at Arsenal, struggling to oust Pope at Newcastle, but he is a younger option than his compatriot, and his use of the ball is arguably better, which could give him an advantage, not to mention his past with Howe.

Liverpool considering £42.7m summer move for Mo Salah’s Egypt teammate

Liverpool are reportedly considering making a bid for an "outstanding" attacking player during the summer transfer window, as he eyes a move away from his current club.

Liverpool eyeing more attacking additions

The Reds have five wonderful attacking options for Jurgen Klopp currently, with Mohamed Salah the star man, but Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo all excellent in their own right. This season, they have scored 75 goals between them in all competitions, and this level of sheer firepower has helped Liverpool get over the line in so many games.

Despite this, further reinforcements could arrive this summer, in order to make competition for places even stronger, with numerous players linked with moves to Anfield and Diaz rumoured to be a target for some major European clubs.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto has reportedly been scouted by Liverpool, for example, in a deal that could cost as much as £80m, should the Portuguese decide that a fresh challenge needs to come his way. Injuries continue to hamper him, though, which would be a concern if the Reds signed him.

Maximilian Beier has also been backed to join the Merseysiders at the end of the current campaign, with the Hoffenheim ace scoring 12 goals in 24 Bundesliga outings so far this season. At 21, he would be considered a long-term prospect who could come in as a strong squad option to begin with.

Liverpool could bid for "outstanding" Salah teammate

According to Bild [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are considering tabling an offer for Eintracht Frankfurt attacking Omar Marmoush this summer, having previously reported that they are "hot" for him.

The Bundesliga side will demand €50m (£42.7m) for his signature and the Reds have been named as strong contenders to snap him up come the end of the season.

Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.

Marmoush could be exactly what Liverpool are after in the summer window, with the 25-year-old primarily a centre forward, but also capable of playing on either flank, possessing impressive versatility. This season, he has scored 10 goals and registered six assists in 20 Bundesliga appearances – only 18 have been starts – proving to be a regular supplier of end product. His agent, Michael Reschke, has heaped praise on him recently.

At 25, Marmoush is at a brilliant age to come in and hit the ground running, and the fact that he knows Salah so well because they're international colleagues could further help him ease into his surroundings.

Umesh Yadav five-for completes India's demolition job

They completed their seventh straight win, and became the first team to ever win four successive Tests by an innings

The Report by Sidharth Monga24-Nov-2019It took India about 47 minutes on the third day to become the first team in Test cricket to win four straight matches by an innings. At 968 balls, this was the shortest Test with an outright result in India, beating the 1028 balls against Afghanistan last year. The win took India’s winning streak to their longest: seven. The most incredible statistic, though, was that this was India’s first home Test win without a single wicket from a spinner. It was only their second such win overall, after Johannesburg in 2018.The only man missing out on a great day for statistics was Ishant Sharma, who started the day one wicket short of registering his best match figures and only his second 10-wicket match haul. There were four wickets standing, including a hamstrung Mahmudullah. Umesh Yadav bolted past Ishant for the innings, taking three wickets, and Mahmudullah couldn’t make it to bat again. That gave Umesh his second Test five-for.The tail was never going to deny India, with the lower order backing away frequently against the unsettling pace of the fast bowlers. Overnight half-centurion Mushfiqur Rahim was going to be the only resistance, and it ended with a clever slower ball as he looked for quick runs.

Spanish media: Liverpool make increased £68m offer to sign Real Madrid star

Liverpool and FSG are preparing for a hectic summer with the departure of Jurgen Klopp coinciding with changes in the boardroom, and it appears they are getting a head start on proceedings by submitting an early bid for an exciting target.

Reds set for summer of change

There remains plenty of uncertainty around Liverpool this summer, despite their excellent season to date. They could yet end the season with three trophies, having already bagged the Carabao Cup and among the favourites to lift both the Premier League and the Europa League trophies.

As it stands, they sit second in the Premier League, but are only behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference heading into the final ten games of the season. Meanwhile, they are on the easier side of the Europa League run to the final, drawn against Atalanta in the quarter-final, before meeting one of Benfica or Marseille in the semi-final.

ByBen Browning Mar 27, 2024

But end-of-season change looms large. The club are certainly set to lose Klopp and Pep Lijnders, with the Liverpool boss and assistant coach both already confirming their departure from the club ahead of the new season. There will be change on the pitch too; Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip are both out of contract, while there remains speculation over the future of talismanic figure Mohamed Salah.

The Reds rejected a massive £150m offer from Saudi Arabia 12 months ago for the Egyptian's services, but come this summer he will have just 12 months left on his contract at Anfield and, though he currently shows no signs of slowing down, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will need to make a decision one way or the other.

Salah's replacement already identified

According to one source, the Reds' new transfer gurus have already found the next man up in that wide goalscorer role. That comes in the form of Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who could become available this summer.

As it stands, Real Madrid consider him a key player, but with both Endrick and Kylian Mbappe arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu, as well as the importance of Vinicius Jr, his opportunities for first team football on a regular basis will be limited.

Liverpool have already shown an interest in Rodrygo previously, but were not willing to meet Real Madrid's asking price. Now, however, Spanish reports claim that the Reds have 'raised' their offer from 60m euros to 80m euros (£68m). They add that thanks to the newcomers in Madrid, 'everything indicates' that Rodrygo will be the most likely to leave the club, but that Liverpool's initial offer was 'considered unacceptable'.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

The new bid may receive the same response, with the Spanish outlet adding that Los Blancos chief Florentino Perez 'has no intention of releasing Rodrygo for less than €100m’. He is a popular figure for both club and country; speaking during his time as Brazil boss, Tite was effusive in his praise of the young winger.

At £85m, he would become Liverpool's record transfer, but it seems certain that the Reds will have to splash the cash to find a ready-made replacement for Salah. They could do a lot worse than Rodrygo.

Baroda hold off Delhi by one run, while TN beat Mumbai

Karnataka kept their slate clean with a win over Jharkhand, while Haryana defeated Rajasthan

Baroda and Karnataka surged to the top of the Super League groups A and B, winning their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches on Friday. While Baroda held off Delhi by a solitary run, Karnataka beat Jharkhand by 13 runs in a game they looked like they would win at a canter at one stage. The victories gave them both eight points each from two matches.Rajasthan and Jharkhand, who have both had a close defeat each in high-scoring games, now find themselves with two defeats in as many Super League games, making a spot in the semi-finals difficult.Like on Thursday, there were IPL scouts from at least four franchises in attendance for the matches, making performances in the Super League particularly crucial given the IPL auction that is scheduled for December 19.Baroda v Delhi
A combined effort by the Delhi bowlers kept Baroda to 151 for 6. However, Delhi’s chase stuttered and finished on 150 for 9. Babashafi Pathan, the right-arm medium-pacer, took 3 for 24 for Baroda, while Kunwar Bidhuri fought a lone battle for Delhi.Bhiduri, handed a game due to Shikhar Dhawan’s injury, had a sparkling T20 debut, hitting 68 off 51 balls at the top of the order. However, he lacked support from the rest of the Delhi batsmen. He was ninth out at the start of the 20th over. Delhi needed 19 to win from the remaining five balls and though Suboth Bhati swung his bat during an unbeaten 20 off 8 balls, Delhi could make only 17 runs.Baroda didn’t have any batsman making a standout innings, though Aditya Waghmode continued his good form, top-scoring with 36 off 31 while opening. Only Deepak Hooda (26 off 19) among the other batsmen crossed 20, though useful contributions right through meant Baroda got to a competitive – and eventually winning – total.Tamil Nadu v Mumbai
Tamil Nadu put behind a comprehensive defeat to Karnataka to hand the other tournament favourites – Mumbai – a resounding loss, by seven wickets with 6.1 overs to spare. Left-arm spinner Shams Mulani had a remarkable day, but the rest of the Mumbai team crumbled.Tamil Nadu’s bowlers ensured Mumbai could get only 121 for 9, despite Mulani hitting 73 off 52 after being promoted to No. 4. R Sai Kishore continued his good run with figures of 3 for 18 in four overs, while M Siddharth took 4 for 16. Prithvi Shaw made 30 off 19 at the top of the order, but no other Mumbai player got into double-figures.Tamil Nadu sent in Shahrukh Khan to partner Hari Nishanth at the top of the order, and the duo gave the team a rapid start. Shahrukh fell in the fourth over, bowled by Mulani, with B Aparajith following him back two balls later. However, Nishanth, who didn’t have a good outing against Karnataka, came to the fore in style, smashing 73* off 44 balls.Mulani took all three wickets to fall – Dinesh Karthik being the third – to complete a fabulous all-round day with figures of 3 for 26 in four overs, but Vijay Shankar ensured he stayed alongside Nishanth as victory was raised in just 13.5 overs.Karnataka v Jharkhand
Put in to bat, Karnataka rocketed off the blocks, before losing their way in the second half of their innings. Their fantastic start nonetheless ensured a sizeable 189 for 6 on the board, and though Jharkhand fought gamely, the required rate was always a touch above what they looked like achieving, eventually finishing on 176 for 5.Karnataka’s start was driven by Devdutt Padikkal – in many ways the batsman of the tournament so far – who raced to 63 off 30 balls in an opening stand that brought 114 in 9.3 overs. His opening partner KL Rahul was more sedate in comparison, while Manish Pandey came in and picked up where Padikkal had left off. However, both men fell shortly thereafter, though at 130 for 3 in 11 overs, Karnataka were still looking at a total well in excess of 200. However, with their three main batsmen gone, the rest of the line-up struggled and could only score at around a run a ball thereon. Left-arm spinner Sonu Singh did most of the damage, with 3 for 28 in four overs. He took out both Rahul and Pandey, and added the wicket of Karun Nair too.Jharkhand’s reply was driven by Virat Singh’s 76* off 44 from No.3, but the batsmen around him couldn’t keep up with the required rate. They needed 87 runs in the last six overs, which is when Virat and Sumit Kumar (23 off 16) cut loose, but though they scored at more than two runs per ball, the eventual target proved too steep.Haryana v Rajasthan
Tight bowling by Haryana gave them a four-wicket victory over Rajasthan with 4.4 overs remaining, with Harshal Patel putting in an all-round show once again.Harshal, who has been opening the batting in this tournament, first took 1 for 19 in his four overs as Rajasthan were restricted to 123 for 8. Ankit Lamba top-scored with 38, but took 41 balls, and only Chandrapal Singh (25* off 14) crossed 20 among other batsmen. Rahul Tewatia, recently traded from Delhi Capitals to Rajasthan Royals, was the most successful bowler, with 3 for 18 in four overs.Interestingly, Haryana opened with two leggies in Yuzvendra Chahal and Amit Mishra, while Tewatia – another leggie – was the first change bowler.Harshal led Haryana’s reply, smacking 41 off 25 at the top of the order to be the highest score of the match. Haryana didn’t have too many others contributing, but given the small target, they didn’t need to.

Ratcliffe not messing: Man Utd up their efforts to sign "complete package"

Manchester United are upping their efforts to sign a "complete package" in the summer transfer window, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to make his presence felt.

Ratcliffe wants big summer at Man Utd

Ratcliffe is now the part-owner of the Red Devils, with the boyhood supporter's acquisition being completed earlier in the year, and he is certainly making a positive early impression. He is bullish about taking United back to the top of the English game, promising to knock Manchester City and Liverpool off their current "perch".

In order for that to happen, some significant business will need to be conducted in the summer, ensuring that some top-quality players arrive at Old Trafford – those who Erik ten Hag and likely incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth feel are the best options to take the team forward.

Juventus' Gleison Bremer

A plethora of names have been linked with joining United in recent weeks, with additions potentially coming in all over the pitch in order to increase the depth on show and the strength of the best possible starting lineup.

Centre-back is a position that needs improvement considering there are question marks over the long-term worth of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof – and Juventus ace Gleison Bremer has been talked about as an option to come in.

Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo is seen as an alternative to the Brazilian, with the 26-year-old winning an average of three aerial duels per game in the Premier League this season, as well as 5.3 per match in the EFL Cup, in which the Whites reached the semi-finals.

In attack, Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen has emerged as an option for United, as the Nigerian enjoys another impressive season for the reigning Serie A champions, scoring 11 goals in just 15 league starts in 2023/24 to date.

Man Utd pushing to sign "complete package"

Now, a fresh transfer update has dropped courtesy of The Mirror, which claims that Manchester United are "ready to firm up their interest" in Bremer, having been linked with him a number of times in the past.

It could even be that Ashworth is a driving force behind the move if and when he comes in, with the report stating that "it's been claimed by reports overseas that he has endorsed Bremer, although this is unconfirmed."

gleison-bremer-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

Bremer does feel like a genuinely strong choice for United at this point, and there is plenty to admire about him as a player, making him an exciting target.

His aforementioned aerial prowess highlights his dominance in that area of his game, but he has also enjoyed an 86.7% pass completion rate in Serie A this season, showing that he is also more than competent with the ball at his feet. Meanwhile, football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as the "complete package", further outlining his all-round ability.

Bremer could be viewed as Lisandro Martinez's ideal centre-back partner moving forward, and at 25, his peak years should still hopefully be ahead of him, much like the Argentine.

Report claims Leeds and Farke may target Championship star in free transfer

Unbeaten in 12 Championship games and on course to seal automatic promotion, Leeds United could soon begin to turn their attention towards summer targets who could become part of a Daniel Farke side who may be attempting to maintain a Premier League place.

Leeds United transfer news

To say that Farke's side are flying would be an understatement. As the final stretch of the Championship season nears, the Whites are perfectly placed to secure promotion and perhaps even leapfrog Leicester City to win the league in dramatic fashion. That said, promotion should mean a busy summer when it comes to building a team capable of staying up in the top flight and that could see the likes of former winger Jack Clarke arrive.

Recent rumours have linked the Yorkshire club with a move to sign the Sunderland star in the event that they lose Wilfried Gnonto or Crysencio Summerville this summer, only for Carlton Palmer to recently pour cold water on that rumour. Clarke, of course, previously played for Leeds, before finding his feet at the Black Cats and now looks destined for a big move.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

Instead of sealing the winger's return, however, those at Elland Road could turn their attention to cheaper alternatives to boost Farke's attacking options this summer. Football League World looked at five potential free agents Leeds could target in the summer, claiming Farke and co may look to sign Coventry City's Callum O'Hare.

The attacking midfielder has enjoyed yet another impressive campaign in England's second tier and may now finally get the chance to star in the Premier League. It could certainly be a wise move by Leeds, with or without promotion this season, given O'Hare's proven ability to light up the Championship and break down low blocks.

His free agent status will undoubtedly extend the line for his signature, but Leeds may well hope to be front of the queue should they decide to make their move this summer.

"Incredible" O'Hare can make Premier League step

After suffering play-off heartbreak at the hands of Luton Town at Wembley last season, there's no doubt that O'Hare will still be eyeing that crucial Premier League step in his career. And that step could come courtesy of Leeds this summer.

It is one that Coventry City manager Mark Robins will know that the midfielder is capable of making too, having sung his praises earlier this season. Robins said via the Coventry Telegraph:

"I heard someone come in at the start and I wondered who it was; I thought it was a rock star!

“Callum walked in and I realised what it was. But he’s been greatly missed by everyone. His presence and his energy, regardless of whether he’s on the pitch or not, is incredible.

"And that’s what you miss, so to have him back in the dressing room is huge. Before when he wasn’t playing he was in the dressing room at home games and he made a difference because of the way he is, giving people energy.”
