Everton targeting Coleman upgrade who’s elite in 1v1 scenarios

Everton Football Club must operate carefully in the 2024 summer transfer window. They are in danger of once again breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, for which they were punished last season, which cost them points and could have easily resulted in their relegation from the top flight.

The Toffees had a total of eight points deducted last season as a result of their rule-breaking, which was broken down into two separate instances, of six points in November and two points in April. Their first deduction was originally ten points, but Everton appealed and had it reduced to a punishment of two points.

In the end, the deduction did not have too much of a bearing on their overall league standing. Sean Dyche’s men finished a comfortable 14 points clear of 18th place Luton Town, who faced the drop at the end of the season. Everton’s 40 points saw them finish 15th and comfortably survive in the end.

Alas, they must now put last season behind them, and look to climb the table to improve Everton’s standings in the Premier League. They have already completed two deals, and have been linked with several new players this summer. A recent report suggests they could look to sign a prominent first-team player from one big top-flight side.

Everton target Premier League defender

The player in question here is Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The 26-year-old has struggled to nail down a spot under Erik ten Hag so far in his tenure and could depart Old Trafford if the right offer comes in this summer.

According to Graeme Bailey, Everton are 'interested' in bringing Wan-Bissaka to the club, as the player enters the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Manchester United

Bailey explains that Wan-Bissaka’s future at United is currently unclear', with Everton ready to pounce should he be made available for transfer.

Any deal between the two clubs for United’s number 29 might not be the only business they conduct with each other this summer; the Red Devils want to sign Jarrad Branthwaite off Everton, with the Toffees thought to be interested in Victor Lindelof as a replacement.

A price has not yet been named for the Englishman, although United could well hope to recoup much of the £50m they spent on Wan-Bissaka back in 2019. However, CIES Football Observatory values him at just £12.6m.

Why Wan-Bissaka would be a good signing

The 26-year-old defender featured 30 times in total for United last season, which included 22 appearances in the Premier League. He registered three assists, including one in the Champions League and one against Liverpool in domestic action. Wan-Bissaka also showed impressive versatility in his game, playing seven times at left-back, a largely unfamiliar role.

If there is one standout aspect of Wan-Bissaka’s game, it is his supreme one-vs-one defending ability. In fact, football analyst Ben Mattinson described the right-back as “one of the best 1v1 defenders", high praise for such a tough skill to master.

This was further backed up by Mattinson’s fellow football analyst H, who explained that the 26-year-old “can simply lock up any single player in the world”, before explaining he has “an attribute every team in the world would want”.

The way the United star uses his long legs to hook the ball away from defenders is so effective. He never overcommits to a slide tackle, just gambles, reaches around the opponent’s legs and hooks the ball away from them with ease. Rarely will you see the Man United defender concede a needless foul, almost always winning the ball back. As some allude to, he is one of, if not the best around at defending in one-vs-one scenarios.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Indeed, his defensive numbers on Fbref are extraordinary, and highlight just how well he reads the game. The former Palace man averages 2.30 interceptions per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 1% of full-backs in Europe, as well as 4.25 combined tackles and interceptions, ranking him in the top 4%. The Englishman also ranks in the top 4% for clearances per 90, with 3.48.

Where big question marks could be drawn surrounding Wan-Bissaka’s overall game is his attacking play. He averages just 3.93 progressive passes per 90, ranking him in the 60th percentile, and plays an average of 0.63 key passes, placing him as low as the 20th percentile. He is not terrible going forward, but there are certainly better options in that sense.

With that being said, in an Everton side that concedes a lot of possession, his defensive responsibilities might well outweigh his attacking requirements, thus making this a worthy investment.

Aaron-Wan-Bissaka-Manchester-United

Should the Toffees get this deal over the line, Wan-Bissaka could be an ideal replacement for club legend Seamus Coleman. The Irishman ranks sixth on the list for most Everton appearances of all time, but at 35 years of age, will likely depart the club in the next year or so. His current deal expires in 12 months.

Thus bringing Wan-Bissaka to the club would be an excellent investment for Everton. Not only are they are replacing Coleman in the long term, but they signing someone who will be a starter immediately, and likely a crucial player for the club.

seamus-coleman-everton-daniel-amokachi-trophy-david-moyes

Dyche did not really have a first-choice right-back last season. Coleman played 12 times in the league, with Scottish defender Nathan Patterson making 20 appearances, and former United player and Premier League legend Ashley Young also slotting in at right-back on 12 occasions.

Wan-Bissaka goes a long way to solving this issue, given his talent and quality defensively, plus the longevity he has, being just 26. It certainly seems like a great move for all parties, and it enhances Everton’s quality at the back and further increases their chances of survival for another season.

Mosquito, porém, seria o homem a sair do time.

Imagine him & Nunez: Liverpool add £49m "pace demon" to their shortlist

Liverpool draped the curtain on life under Jurgen Klopp with the knowledge that sweeping changes were being made to the club's infrastructure and that moves needed to be made over the summer to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.

FSG have prodded at the transfer market with a stick but, as yet, nothing concrete. Arne Slot has been anointed as the club's new head coach and is presently figuring his squad out, inculcating his methods and shaping the team to his design.

Still, there is genuine interest in Leny Yoro – who is grudgingly expected to be a Real Madrid player before long – and there is an admiration held in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, who was actually offered to the Reds last month as the Magpies fought to stave off the threat of PSR.

Anthony Gordon.

Now, though, Newcastle have sold peripheral players and do not need to sell their Player of the Season. Liverpool are well stocked at left wing but could certainly do with such a player if Luis Diaz, who has been persistently linked with a move away, is sold.

Maybe it won't be Gordon, but Liverpool have earmarked an exciting alternative.

Liverpool eyeing new winger

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are hoping to blow Barcelona away in the race to sign Spain's Euro 2024 star Nico Williams, with the winger added to their shortlist in the eventuality that Gordon stays put.

He has a £49m release clause in his contract but Liverpool could be tempted to place an offer exceeding that amount to ensure he moves to Merseyside.

Barcelona plus a host of Liverpool's Premier League rivals are also interested in the fleet-footed talent, and while cash-strapped Barca feel confident that they have funds to make a deal happen, the Reds hold financial superiority and could now pull some strings.

Barcelona have also been interested in signing Diaz this summer, who Liverpool value in excess of £50m and are not actively looking to sell. Savvy negotiating could see a series of blocks slot into place for the Anfield side.

What Nico Williams would bring to Liverpool

One of the most alluring things about Spain's performance level at the ongoing European Championship has stemmed from their formidable wide partnership: Williams and precocious Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal.

Yamal might carry the giddying potential of a generational talent, but Williams isn't half bad himself, having produced some masterful performances as his nation has stormed into the final four in Germany, disposing of the hosts in the quarter-finals with a last-gasp extra-time winner.

Praised by leading Spanish journalist Guillem Balague for "playing the best football of his career" over these past few weeks, Williams has been a sought-after prospect for some time now but the Athletic Bilbao star has now confirmed himself one of the most coveted options on the market.

Liverpool currently boast one of the Premier League's most electrifying wingers in the 27-year-old Diaz, but the Colombian has seen questions raised over his output after succeeding Sadio Mane on the left flank, notching only 37 goal contributions across 98 appearances for the Merseyside club.

Williams, conversely, clinched 27 goal contributions from only 37 matches for Bilbao last year, winning the Copa del Rey on the way.

Spain star Nico Williams

He's only 21, already ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 20% for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

The Spaniard has been described as a "pace demon" by football podcaster Adam Keys, but in truth, Williams is much, much more. He boasts myriad qualities to lift Slot's Liverpool team to the highest level, and none could benefit more than Darwin Nunez.

How Williams would benefit Darwin Nunez

Nunez is a conflicting figure at times but there's no denying the Uruguayan's staggering quality. He's influential and effective, with a multi-angled skill set and a tenacious approach to his football.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Signed from SL Benfica for a club-record £85m fee in the summer of 2022, the 25-year-old has scored 33 goals and assisted 17 more across 96 matches for Liverpool, heralded as an "agent of chaos" – relayed by writer Leanne Prescott – but proving to be far too profligate, missing a shocking 27 big chances in the Premier League last year despite only scoring 11 goals.

Williams could help in that regard, with his above-discussed creative prowess underlining his ability to drive into openings down the flank and provide Nunez with the requisite support to find and sustain a golden streak of offensive form.

The 6 foot 1 striker is creative himself, ranking among the top 5% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 13% for shot-creating actions and the top 15% for progressive carries per 90, but he ultimately needs to prioritise the refinement of his shooting skills and Williams' playmaking presence could pay dividends in that particular quest.

Mohamed Salah is more than adept enough to serve the Uruguay star on the alternate flank, with no Premier League player creating more than his 22 big chances in the Premier League last season.

Diaz, however, only created five big chances despite playing in 37 matches. It's clear that making this signing would settle Liverpool's attacking equilibrium and establish a wonderful sense of balance to ensure that Nunez fires Liverpool's team into illustrious success.

Samit Patel takes Nottinghamshire association into 20th year with new contract

Patel to focus on white-ball cricket, while Harry Gurney also re-signs

Samit Patel is set to complete 20 years as a Nottinghamshire player after signing a two-year contract extension at the club, primarily for white-ball cricket.Patel, who made his first-class debut for Notts as a 17-year-old in 2002, was a key part of the club’s T20 Blast triumph this season, hitting a vital 28 not out from No. 8 in the quarter-final against Leicestershire before returning 2 for 42 in six overs across the semi-final and final. While he remains available for selection in red-ball cricket, Patel said that focusing on his limited-overs skills would benefit both the club and his longevity.”I’m not retiring from playing with the red ball, and I’ll always be there for Notts in first-class cricket if they need me,” Patel said. “However, Matt Carter and Liam Patterson-White are spin bowlers with their careers ahead of them, and we have a talented batting line-up with loads of potential too, so I firmly believe the club needs to go down that route in the red-ball game.”In limited-overs cricket, I believe we have a team that can be there or thereabouts for years to come. I know I have a big part to play in that and winning more trophies is the ultimate aim.”ALSO READ: County ins and outs, 2020-21Patel, who played six Tests and 54 limited-overs games in his England career, has become a regular feature on the worldwide T20 circuit in recent years, and is currently playing for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League playoffs before heading to the Lanka Premier League. He was surprisingly overlooked in the selection process for the Hundred last year, and will hope to press his case ahead of January’s draft.”Samit believes very strongly that we’ll benefit as a limited-overs team from him becoming a white-ball specialist – both in terms of the longevity of his career and with the specific focus it will bring to his preparation,” Peter Moores, Notts’ head coach, said.”The terms of this contract are reflective of Samit’s wishes in that regard. He’s earned the right over many years, and in particular with the way he went about his cricket last season, to make that decision and for us to respect it.”The club also confirmed that Harry Gurney has signed another white-ball deal for 2021 after missing the T20 Blast this summer through a shoulder injury, which also ruled him out of the IPL. Having joined from Leicestershire in 2012, Gurney will complete a decade as a Notts player next summer.”2020 has ended up being a bit of an enforced sabbatical for me,” Gurney said, “but I feel rested, refreshed and ready to power through the next phase of my rehab to get ready for 2021.”Toby Pettman, a beanpole Oxford University seamer, has also been offered professional terms for 2021 after impressing bowling coach Kevin Shine at an MCCU open day.

West Ham make approach to sign £25m+ international forward after Guilherme

West Ham United are now looking at a move to sign a £25m+ forward after securing a deal for Luis Guilherme.

West Ham set to sign Luis Guilherme

Julen Lopetegui, speaking after being announced as the new West Ham head coach to replace David Moyes last month, admitted he wants to put his own stamp on things at the London Stadium.

“We will try to put our stamp on the Club. I feel that we have a fantastic platform. I think the last few years have been very good years to have this base, of course, but my ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this.

“I am where I want to be. I am here because I want to be here and for us it was a fantastic day when we closed our agreement here because our commitment is 100 per cent to be here.”

To do that, there could be plenty of work to do on the training ground and in the transfer market, and it looks as if the Irons have now sealed a deal for Luis Guilherme to become their first summer signing.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, a medical has been completed and a deal worth a potential €30m from Palmeiras is agreed, with contracts to be signed on Wednesday.

After Guilherme, though, it looks as if sporting director Tim Steidten is already working on more deals. Reports have suggested that contact has been made for Udinese defender Nehuen Perez, and an approach has also been made for a new forward.

West Ham make Jorgen Strand Larsen approach

According to reports abroad, relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham have made an approach to sign Celta Vigo attacker Jorgen Strand Larsen. Signed from Dutch side FC Groningen in 2022 for €12m, this summer appears to be the time for the La Liga side to cash in on the Norway international, and although he has a €50m release clause, Celta Vigo want around €30m (£25.3m).

Whether or not West Ham are willing to match that fee remains to be seen, with Larsen primarily a centre-forward who can also play on either wing.

Take out the goals of Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus last season and West Ham’s top scorer was central midfielder Tomas Soucek with 10, so looking to sign a new attacker appears to be a wise move by Lopetegui and Steidten.

With Larsen, the Hammers would be getting a 24-year-old striker who appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €25m Transfermarkt valuation and one who has just scored 13 La Liga goals last season.

Prior to his time with Celta Vigo, Larsen also hit double figures for goals with Groningen in the Eredivisie in the 2021/22 campaign, so a deal could be a shrewd one, making this a deal to keep an eye on.

Liverpool now plotting new bid for "fearless" £70m star Trent knows well

Having already seen initial talks break down, Liverpool are now reportedly plotting a fresh bid to sign a summer target who Trent Alexander-Arnold already knows well.

Liverpool transfer news

Compared to last summer when the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister had already arrived by this point, it's been a quiet summer transfer window at Liverpool so far.

New sporting director Richard Hughes put that down to the ongoing international tournaments, however. He told the media in his first press conference alongside new manager Arne Slot: "I think naturally when there are major competitions during the summer – a World Cup, a European Championship and in this case a Copa America and the Olympics as well, so there's a lot of football being played – naturally the attention is going to be there.

"After the flurry that there was in June, I think it will calm down a little bit, [that] would be my prediction for the month of July and then, like always, when August starts and coaches have had more time to work with players, I think then the opinions will be more set at football clubs and then you may see a situation in August which is, like in previous seasons, there's a little bit of hurry to get things done and to make sure that everyone's squads are in order."

Hijack: Liverpool eyeing “monster” who'd be Slot's own Van Dijk signing

This would be quite the statement from FSG.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 5, 2024

Amid that flurry, the Reds could seal their first arrival of the summer in the form of a current Premier League star. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Liverpool are plotting a new bid to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United after failing in their first move.

Reports indicated that the two clubs couldn't reach an agreement initially as the Reds didn't want to part ways with Jarell Quansah in a proposed swap deal.

Gordon did reportedly have his head turned by the prospect of an Anfield move, however, to hand Liverpool a boost in pursuit of his signature. Of course, things are more difficult now that Newcastle aren't desperately looking to sell players to comply with PSR, valuing Gordon at a reported minimum £70m as a result, but it seems as though Liverpool are plotting a fresh move nonetheless.

"Fearless" Gordon is better than Diaz

A boyhood Liverpool fan, it would be a dream end to the summer for Gordon if he completed a move to Anfield to join England teammate and fellow Scouser Trent Alexander-Arnold. Alas, he wouldn't have much time to stop and admire the place with the task of competing for a place against Luis Diaz no easy job under Slot in the coming campaign. If last season is anything to go by, though, Gordon is more than capable of doing exactly that.

Playoff battle heats up as Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders look to waste no time

It is a clash of two aggressive teams that will look punch and counter-punch

Shashank Kishore25-Oct-20204:30

Should Kings XI persist with Jordan? Should Morgan bat ahead of Karthik?

Big pictureIt’s a mid-table clash but a blockbuster clash. A battle for fourth spot couldn’t have become more intriguing. Kings XI Punjab were at the bottom of the pile only 10 days ago. Suddenly, here they are now, having won four games on the trot, and looking for a fifth that will vault them into playoff contention.Kings XI got out of jail, yet again, against Sunrisers Hyderabad; their death bowling coming good to defend 20 off the last three overs. The last 14 balls yielded six wickets and an epic choke that kept them alive. One of the reasons for their improved death-overs bowling is 20-year old Arshdeep Singh. He’s flown under the radar, and doesn’t get talked about like some of his other India Under-19 batch mates from the victorious 2018 campaign, but Arshdeep’s hard lengths, cutters into the pitch and use of the crease and angles has allowed him to more than make up for his lack of pace. It has also helped compensate for Chris Jordan’s off days.In addition, the threat Ravi Bishnoi and M Ashwin bring to the table has complimented a batting line-up capable of destroying any attack. They’ll want to however start winning much earlier, and not always take it into the final over. The Knight Riders’ win on Saturday can be equated somewhat in a Tennis context to being 4-0 down in the fourth set, after taking a 2-1 lead, in the third round of a Grand Slam. They were down for the count at 42 for 3 just after the power play, but were sensationally launched to a mammoth score by Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine. The confidence of runs also showed with the ball as Narine, bowling with half-sleeves – was that a statement? – delivered a telling spell in the middle to choke Delhi Capitals for runs after Pat Cummins did the early damage and Varun Chakravarthy finished with a deserving maiden five-for in IPL 2020.So it’s a clash of two aggressive teams that will look punch and counter-punch. Kings XI know they simply have to win. Knight Riders, meanwhile, can take a step closer to the playoffs with a win. Even if they don’t, not all is lost, but they don’t want to be looking at the table when they can be masters of their own fate.In the newsMayank Agarwal, who missed Sunday’s game, is likely to return. Agarwal was rested after suffering body bruises while diving full stretch to avert a run out earlier in the week. His inclusion could mean one of Mandeep Singh or Deepak Hooda could miss out.Knight Riders are closely monitoring Andre Russell, whose hamstring has been problematic over the years. He has been training regularly and is closely working with the physio. If they do decide to play him – a half-fit Russell could perhaps still hit big sixes in Sharjah – who do they leave out? Eoin Morgan is captain. Narine has just delivered a telling performance. Lockie Ferguson has made an immediate impact and Cummins is just starting to come into his own. It’s a really tough call.Previous meetingKings XI needed 21 off 17, with nine wickets in hand. And then, somehow, they contrived to turn it into a situation where two new batsmen – literally; neither had faced a ball yet – needed to hit 14 off the last over. Against Narine. Five dismissals. Strike rate of 86. It merely confirms an established fact: Gayle isn’t the same force against spin, at least early on, as he is against the faster bowlers. That said, Sharjah is a small ground where even mishits carry for six. Knight Riders have two bowlers of the mystery kind. How about looking to finish overs of spin through Narine and Varun Chakravarthy while Gayle’s around? You’d be able to at least put a temporary lid on scoring or perhaps get him out if you’re lucky. They have invested heavily in Shubman Gill. He’s even part of the leadership think tank, but sentiments aside, he has had one of the worst strike rates (112) for an opener this season – a shade below Aaron Finch and Ben Stokes – among those who has played more than five games. Maybe they could change things around and look to open with Tripathi with Rana. Despite his good form, Knight Riders should look to resist temptation to open with Narine. Kings XI have two legspinners and Narine is lethal against them – striking at 211 in the 54 balls he’s played of this variety. So hold him back for them the spinners come on.Stats that matter Kings XI’s death overs economy of 8.8 is the best among all teams in the second half of IPL 2020 Maxwell has faced the second-most number of deliveries (100) without hitting a six this season behind Ben Stokes, who went without hitting a six having faced 122 balls Agarwal and Rahul’s 623 runs in 10 innings is the most an opening pair has put on in IPL 2020. Will they be reunited for Monday’s fixture?
