The pair added 152 after getting together at 4 for 2 before Athapaththu’s two wickets hastened the end for Pakistan
Danyal Rasool05-Jun-2022An all-round performance from Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu helped her team to a convincing consolation win on the final day of their tour of Pakistan. After electing to bat, she scored her sixth ODI hundred, a 95-ball 101, before taking 2 for 20 with the ball to help rout Pakistan by 93 runs.It looked like a miserable tour for Sri Lanka would end with another defeat when they lost two wickets for four runs. Hasini Perera was – you guessed it – run out on the fifth ball of the innings before Anam Amin trapped Hansima Karunaratne in front. But Athapaththu consolidated with Harshitha Madavi in a splendid third-wicket partnership that accumulated 152 runs. While Madavi was circumspect in her approach, her captain was far more aggressive, taking the fight to spinners and fast bowlers alike and putting Pakistan on the ropes for the first time all series.A number of curious captaincy decisions by Bismah Maroof, who had a torrid day, didn’t help. She brought herself on when a wicket was needed, though it was quickly apparent she wouldn’t be the one to deliver it. An increasingly emboldened Athapaththu was taking on every bowler at that point, and she wasn’t spared. When Diana Baig did come on, she was accosted with three fours off her first three balls. When Nida Dar finally had Athapaththu stumped, she had brought up her hundred, and a number of cameos lower down the order took the visitors to 260. Pakistan had only ever managed more than that in a second innings once and, against a buoyant Sri Lanka, they had their work cut out if they were to manage something similar. The chase followed the expected script as Pakistan couldn’t even come close. The fall of Sidra Ameen was perhaps unfortunate, with the batter getting an inside edge onto her pad though she was given out lbw. However, what followed was Pakistan’s own doing. An ordinary call for a non-existent single from Maroof saw Muneeba Ali run out. Soon, Maroof was bowled for a duck by Oshadi Ranasinghe while Nida Dar was cleaned up by Athapaththu.Aliya Riaz’s half-century brought some respectability to the scorecard for Pakistan, but the target was a way away. Sri Lanka kept chipping away as Pakistan waited for the inevitable and, with more than eight overs to go, folded for 167. Sri Lanka may not leave with either of the two trophies they fought for in Karachi, but they had the consolation of the last laugh.

Michael Pepper continued his Vitality Blast love affair with the Cloud County Ground before Aaron Beard returned career-best figures as Essex Eagles condemned Surrey to a second straight loss.Pepper took his Chelmsford tally to 304 in six innings – and 386 in total – with a tubthumping 48 as Paul Walter continued his fine form with 49 as the Eagles soured to 198 for 7 before fast bowler Beard, making just his second appearance of the season, removed openers Will Jacks and Jason Roy to eventually pick up 4 for 29 – as Surrey fell 43 runs short.Essex boosted their hopes of securing a home quarter-final to move to seven wins out of 12, while Surrey remain top and will host a home knockout game but having been previously unbeaten in all competitions until Thursday night have lost momentum. On a fixture celebrating Essex Pride, Surrey stuck the Eagles in to bat and had Adam Rossington caught behind in the second over, with the first two overs only going for six before Pepper went ballistic. He struck 30 from the first nine balls he faced, with just a dot and a single punctuating his boundary blitz. The South African-born batter began by scooping a six, something he replicated in the following over between a bullet cut shot and followed by four consecutive boundaries off Dan Moriarty. His hitting paused after a strike to the box, which he never really recovered from as he limped to five more runs before he reversed straight to third – the second wicket in three balls for Sunil Narine.Essex’s rebuild and second 10 overs were a textbook display of accumulation – with only seven dot balls, along with four wickets coming in the second half of the innings for 110 runs.Walter was the chief architect of the scoring with his 49, which included four towering sixes, as he put on 51 with Dan Lawrence and 44 with Simon Harmer.Reece Topley made sure his former county didn’t get to 200 as he chipped away throughout and added Walter, Daniel Sams and Harmer to his earlier Rossington dismissal to end up with 4 for 37.Beard made an electrifying start as he picked up both a yorked Roy and Jacks, brilliantly caught at short fine leg by Tom Westley.Smith and Rory Burns put on 57 with a low-risk approach, while still keeping up with the rate before Dan Lawrence stuck one through Smith. Burns followed by skewing Beard to mid-on and Narine fired back at Harmer as Surrey lost their way.Laurie Evans continued the slump when sub fielder Ben Allison produced a spectacular solo relay catch at wide long-on – Harmer grabbing two wickets in the over to return two for 20. Beard had debutant Tom Lawes skying to mid-on for his fourth.Sams pilfered Chris Jordan and Sam Cook had Conor McKerr as Surrey could only reach 155 for 9.
The last month or so has been far from ideal for Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta’s side have dropped points in the Premier League and are now set to be without the talismanic Bukayo Saka for at least a couple of months.
However, the one positive development has been the return to form of Gabriel Jesus, who’s bagged five goals in his last three games and looks far more dangerous than he did just a month ago.
Unfortunately for the Brazilian, though, it might be too little too late, as recent reports have once again linked the club to one of Europe’s most exciting up-and-coming strikers, who could be his long-term replacement.
Arsenal transfer news
According to reports from Spain, Arsenal have maintained their interest in RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Šeško and he now wants to seal a move to England in 2025.
The report claims that following his impressive form for the German side this season, the Slovenian international has caught the eye of several potential suitors heading into next year.
While this competition is far from ideal for the Gunners, the good thing is that they now know how much they’ll need to offer to secure the 21-year-old’s services, as the report claims Leipzig will only listen to offers in excess of €70m, which is about £58m.
RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko
It would still require a significant investment from Arsenal to get this transfer over the line, but given Šeško’s ability and potential, it is worth pursuing, even if it could be bad news for Jesus.
How Šeško compares to Jesus
So, as things stand, it would appear that Jesus has reclaimed the starting number nine role at Arsenal, and given his five goals in the last three games, it’s a role he could be set to keep for a little while longer.
However, if the club were to go out and spend shy of £60m on Šeško either next month or in the summer, they’d surely only do so with the intention of giving him as many minutes as possible, putting him in direct competition with the Brazilian.
With that said, which one of them comes out on top in a direct comparison?
Well, when it comes to their pure output since the start of last season, it’s quite a comfortable victory for the Radeče-born “monster”, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson.
For example, he has found the back of the net 29 times and provided five assists in 65 appearances, which equates to a goal involvement every 1.91 games.
In contrast, the former Manchester City star has scored 14 goals and provided ten assists in 59 games across the same period, equating to a rather disappointing average of a goal involvement every 2.45 games.
Interestingly, things are a little closer when we take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers since the start of last season, although the Leipzig gem still comes out just ahead in the most relevant metrics.

For example, while he’s second best for non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots and goal-creating actions, he is comfortably ahead in metrics like actual non-penalty goals plus assists, shots on target, goals per shot and shot on target and aerial duels won, all per 90.
Moreover, the fact that the Sao Paulo-born ace scored a flurry of goals in the last month has improved his overall per 90 numbers, which could be misleading without that added context.
Ultimately, while Jesus is still a brilliant footballer and a player who could be a valuable asset for Arsenal, it seems unlikely that he’s going to develop into a goalscoring phenomenon in the coming years, which could be the case for Šeško.
Therefore, while it will cost the club a significant amount of money, the Gunners should do what they can to sign the Slovenian goal machine as soon as possible.

“I really enjoyed being part of the team environment last season and feel like that helped me produce some of my best cricket”
ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jul-2022India’s white-ball captain Harmanpreet Kaur has re-signed with Melbourne Renegades for a second season with them, in the 2022-23 WBBL.Harmanpreet was the Player of the Tournament in the last WBBL season for her all-round show of 406 runs and 15 wickets, leading both batting and bowling charts for Renegades.”I’m excited to be coming back to the Renegades,” Harmanpreet said. “I really enjoyed being part of the team environment last season and feel like that helped me produce some of my best cricket.”Personally, I just wanted to play my role for the team and it was pleasing to be able to do that.”We supported each other as a team last year and were able to get some good results, but we still have plenty of room to improve. Hopefully we can do that, make the finals again and put ourselves in a position to compete for the title.”Renegades finished second on the table last season to make it to the finals stage but lost to Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger.Harmanpreet primarily batted at No. 4 with Renegades last time and averaged 58.00 while striking at 130.96 with three half-centuries. Her 18 sixes were also the most by a player in the last season.”Harmanpreet is one of the best players in the world, her record speaks for itself,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said. “She was outstanding for us last season and was a match-winner on multiple occasions, having a prolific impact across the tournament with both bat and ball.”As an experienced player, Harmanpreet’s leadership and calm approach under pressure was a huge asset for our team. She was a great fit both on and off the field and really bought into our team environment.”After not being able to play games in Melbourne last season, we know our fans will be thrilled about the prospect of watching Harmanpreet in action in WBBL08.”
Festivity fever has gripped the nation, but with Boxing Day comes football, and those of a Liverpool persuasion are going to be waking up with just one thing in mind: Leicester City.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side meet Liverpool at Anfield this evening as they look to stir an upset through the remnants of the manager bounce that has faded after a promising start, for Newcastle and Wolves have heavily beaten the Foxes across the past two weeks.
Four points clear at the top (with a game in hand), Liverpool will double down on their conviction ahead of the match, head-and-shoulders above their Premier League rivals as the team to beat as we approach the new year.
But Nottingham Forest’s Merseyside win back in September serves as a cautionary tale to enter contests with the genuine fear of defeat, lest complacency stifle the synergy and style that Arne Slot has finely crafted over several months.

Boxing Day routinely fosters thrilling, high-scoring fixtures, and while the Reds will be desperate to keep a clean sheet after shipping eight from their past three top-flight matches, it’s felt that the hosts will have too much for 17th-place Leicester.
Liverpool team news
Slot expressed caution in his pre-match press conference, with the frenetic festive period more than capable of turning over an upset or two.
On the injury front, defensive duo Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley are still sidelined after respective setbacks picked up at the start of the month.
Things look rather promising, that aside, and Liverpool might see some rotation after the high-octane victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with Curtis Jones sure to be eyeing a midfield starting berth.
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates
Diogo Jota’s fitness has steadily increased over the past few weeks and he might be keen on displacing Luis Diaz at centre-forward, though Darwin Nunez is sure to be eyeing up the place himself having been dropped down at N17.
Diaz starred against Tottenham, bagging a brace and offering a silky and unusual take on the number nine role, but he’s not as clinical and consistent as someone like Jota, who could be the difference-maker against a City backline that could crumble against such an elite marksman.
While Slot doesn’t really ring the changes, he might be keen to send Andy Robertson back to the bench too, replacing him with Kostas Tsimikas.
Why Slot should drop Andy Robertson
Robertson is one of Liverpool’s longest-serving members, joining from Hull City in an astute £10m deal back in 2017. His signing and debut season were overshadowed by Mohamed Salah’s record-breaking brilliance, but 319 appearances and a host of major honours later, he’s a legend of the modern era.
Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.
The 30-year-old has weathered a few storms over the past several seasons, however, and may not be quite the same electric machine of old, with errors and athletic lapses slipping into his season.
Make no mistake, Robertson is cultured and experienced with one of the finest ball-playing abilities of any full-back in the business, ranking among the top 1% of such players for passes attempted, the top 3% for progressive passes and the top 2% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.
But he’s declined. There’s no question that he’s a lesser version of his former self, even acknowledging in November that some detractors had “written me off” due to his dip in form and security.
He’s conceded recent penalties against Real Madrid and Southampton while being shown the violent glare of the red card during a 2-2 draw against Fulham this month, leaving reporter Lewis Bower criticising the “terrible” mistake in an afternoon that was “a bit of a mare” for the Scotland skipper.
But it’s not just these instances; they are not flashes in a grimy pan. Tsimikas has been second-choice throughout his Liverpool career, joining from Olympiakos in 2020. Now, though, he’s earning minutes on the big stage over a fully fit Robertson, producing results that reinforce Slot’s decision.

This detailed statistical collation makes an interesting comment on Robertson’s athletic regression, with his Greek peer outstripping him across a number of defensive and sporting metrics, albeit from a shallower data pool.
Robertson is one of Liverpool’s highest earners at £160k-per-week, but the paper covering the cracks is starting to wear thin. Tsimikas, 28, is far more authoritative in ball-winning situations while maintaining a crispness with his passing that suits Slot’s set-up just fine.
Change may be afoot at Anfield during the Christmas hangover, with Robertson and perhaps Diaz among those that Slot could place on the bench. Remember, this is a congested period and Liverpool meet West Ham United at the London Stadium in just three days.
For now, let’s just take it game by game. Four or five months from now, plot threads will weave together in a grand slam denouement that may or may not see Liverpool lift the biggest prizes Europe has to offer.
Andy Robertson and Arne Slot
Beating Leicester would only strengthen Slot’s accord though, for it would serve as another subtle but sinister reminder to ostensible title rivals that Liverpool have the quality, depth and dynamism to triumph.
Rotation is key, especially with a trip to West Ham just a few days away. Robertson needs to be dropped, with Tsimikas more than capable of serving well in his stead.
Now worth more than Trent: Slot hit gold on Liverpool's "coach's dream"
This Liverpool star has been especially important in recent weeks.
Steven Smith has dispelled doubts about his fitness ahead of Australia’s first Test against Sri Lanka, but Mitchell Starc but still faces a crucial lead-in to overcome a finger injury. The two stars of Australia’s last tour to Sri Lanka, Smith and Starc, headline a long injury list for the tourists ahead of the opening Test in Galle on Wednesday.Travis Head is also battling to play after a hamstring strain with Glenn Maxwell waiting in the wings, while Ashton Agar’s side strain has cost him a potential Test recall.Related

Starc won't risk Test chances by making quick return in Sri Lanka
But there is good news, at least for Smith and his quad injury after he missed the past three ODIs in the country where he scored a Test century during Australia’s most recent tour in 2016.”If we were still playing one-day cricket, I would be touch and go, but Test cricket, I will be fine,” Smith told AAP. “Test cricket is a bit easier [on the quad].”I field in the slips, won’t be doing a great deal of running around in the field. And then in these conditions, there’s not a lot of hard running.”They usually have a few sweepers, and it’s four or one quite often. So there’s not a heap of hard running.”Starc has not played since cutting his finger in the first T20I match more than two weeks ago. He has since had stitches removed and bowled at full pace in the nets with tape applied. He had planned to bowl for the first time without the strapping on Sunday afternoon, but instead had some minor taping on his left index finger as he ran in for about 20 minutes.Match officials have dictated that Starc cannot enter the game with his bowling hand taped up, unless he cuts it again during play.Even in that event Starc has found it difficult to grip the ball down the seam in training, meaning he will want to bowl without the taping before Wednesday.”We have tried to give it as long as we could, because it is in probably the worst spot,” he said. “It’s where the ball comes off last. It’s certainly not to my advantage [bowling with tape on], because it takes away from my grip. “Agar’s injury is also a spanner in the works for Australia. Fingerspin has traditionally been more effective than wristspin in Galle, with Australia opting to keep Jon Holland and Matthew Kuhnemann around as back-ups.Selectors had not ruled out using the legspin of Mitchell Swepson, but coach Andrew McDonald indicated Agar was in serious contention to play his first Test since 2017 before the injury.Agar remains in the squad and is hopeful of being fit for the second Test, also in Galle, starting on July 8.”A lot of the suggestions from around the traps is that finger spin tends to work better here than wrist spin,” McDonald said. “But it’s not to say wrist spin can’t work.”We’re not as clear if we were to go with a finger spinner [on who it would be] as we would have been with Ashton. We feel like Ash would have given us good control, and that would have been a positive for the team if he was selected.”
