Netherlands relishing challenge that 'dreams are made of'

On Tuesday, Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd tweeted a picture of his diary for October 27. Below three technical notes – head to the ball, play straight, and play late – was written: “18:00 – T20 vs India @ SCG.” The tweet was captioned: What dreams are made of.Tomorrow in Sydney, Netherlands will face India for just the third time in international cricket. The previous meetings were at the 2003 ODI World Cup in Paarl and the same event in 2011 in Delhi.Captain Scott Edwards often wore a wide smile during his pre-match press conference as he answered questions on whether his team could cause an upset, what plans they had for Virat Kohli after his display against Pakistan (“You hope you don’t come up against him on one of those days because he looked pretty hard to stop”) and whether the match was a shop window for players to get an IPL deal. Earlier in the week, Ricky Ponting said he had been impressed with Bas de Leede and there may be BBL interest from Hobart Hurricanes.”It’s huge,” Edwards said. “You always dream of playing World Cups, and the SCG is one of the most famous grounds in the world. And then add in you’re playing against arguably one of the best teams in the world, yes, it’s pretty surreal.”While this is a very significant game for Netherlands, it is perhaps not quite as daunting as it once would have been, given the exposure they have had in the soon-to-be-defunct ODI Super League. It has provided them 24 matches (19 played, 5 to come) including series against West Indies, England and Pakistan in the most recent home summer.Though wins have been hard to come by – just two against Ireland – it was a tournament Edwards cited more than once as having enabled crucial development and exposure for players. It ensured fixtures against teams who would not ordinarily play a side such as Netherlands, especially over three-match series, but it won’t be part of the calendar again, meaning matches against those sides are likely to be thinner on the ground.Netherlands came within nine runs of beating Bangladesh in their opening Super 12s game•ICC/Getty Images

“[It’s] obviously disappointing that the ODI Super League is not going ahead,” Edwards said. “It was a great experience for all of our players. Going forward there’s more teams going to the World Cups in the future, which is great, but you’ve got to qualify for those events, which is always tough.”It’s a bit disappointing, but we’re here now and we get to play another four, five, however many games in the World Cup which we’re looking forward to.”Coming up against these guys, it’s a little bit of an unknown if you only play the bigger nations once every few years. The fact that we got to play 12 to 15 games in the last nine months gives us a lot of confidence. Even for individuals, you look at guys that have performed against these teams. It gives you that sort of acknowledgment that you can perform on a big stage against these bigger teams. We take a lot of confidence from that.”Netherlands will have one survivor from their previous meeting with India, Tom Cooper, and he brings with him an SCG average of 43.66 and two first-class centuries, although he’s had four low scores in this World Cup. “He’s obviously great to have on the squad,” Edwards said. “He hasn’t got the runs this tournament, but hopefully this is the game that he can get going.”After the game is completed, Edwards hopes there is a chance to spend a bit of time with the India players. “Any chance you get to learn from these sorts of players is awesome,” he said. “We saw that at the last World Cup. They’re generally pretty generous with their time.”Netherlands have stunned big opposition at the T20 World Cup before, twice beating England, at Lord’s in 2009 and Chattogram in 2014. Cooper, Logan van Beek and Timm van der Gugten were part of the side in the second of those games. With a little more composure they might have beaten Bangladesh in their opening Super 12s game, but no one expects them to run India close. Yet, as Ireland have just shown against England at the MCG, anything is possible.”I don’t think there’s many people out there expecting us to win,” Edwards said. “For us…we’ll play our best brand of cricket and we’ll do everything we can to win this game. But there’s no pressure on us in that sense.”It’s a match that dreams are made of but maybe, just maybe, it’s one where dreams can come true as well.

South Australia clinch thriller after stroke of luck cuts of Hughes century

The opener continued his stunning one-day record, but Nathan McSweeney’s all-round effort prevailed

AAP05-Nov-2022

A stroke of luck helped South Australia halt Daniel Hughes on a North Sydney Oval batting paradise to pinch an eight-run win over NSW in a one-day Cup run-fest.The Redbacks set NSW 331 to win on Saturday, Nathan McSweeney (94) anchoring the innings and Travis Head, Alex Carey and Thomas Kelly all scoring half-centuries.But NSW, bowled out for a state-record 76 in a winless campaign already this season, were purring to victory when their top order responded.Needing 15 off as many balls, Hughes (139 off 127) looked set to steer the hosts home until he was run-out at the bowler’s end when McSweeney inadvertently deflected the ball onto the stumps.Nathan Lyon was then out lbw on the first ball he faced and, needing nine off the final over, Ben Dwarshuis was dismissed on the first delivery from former NSW quick Harry Conway.”I shouldn’t be backing up as much as I was…I should have just stayed in my crease,” Hughes said. “If I’m there at the end we get the runs.”We always had it pretty much in the bag, guys coming out scoring at a nice rate and never got above eight an over. No-one was stressed out; they needed to bowl us out to win the game and they did that, so hats off to them.”Earlier McSweeney drove and swept Lyon, both conventionally and unconventionally, with great impact as he shared 110 and 96-run stands with Head and Carey respectively.Kelly pushed the Redbacks well past 300, a huge six over mid-on bringing up his 50 from the final ball of the innings.McSweeney’s knock followed 75 in his previous one-day innings and comes after an unbeaten 99 earlier in the season gave South Australia their first Sheffield Shield win in two years.”The game ebbed and flowed all day, luck we came out on top when it was likely Hughesy was going to get the Blues over the line,” McSweeney said.Head, a contender to replace Aaron Finch at the top of the order for Australia in 50-over cricket, was filthy with himself at an opportunity missed. He passed 50 for the first time since his first Shield innings this season but was no sooner inside edging as he charged and attempted to loft Liam Hatcher over mid-on.

Shakib joins Southee as highest wicket-taker in T20Is

The Bangladesh captain has 127 wickets from 108 T20Is

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Nov-2022The tussle at the top of the T20I wicket-takers’ list continues, with Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan picking up his 127th and joining New Zealand’s Tim Southee at the No. 1 spot.ESPNcricinfo LtdShakib got to the landmark by taking 2 for 33 against India in the ongoing men’s T20 World Cup on Wednesday. He dismissed KL Rahul for 50 off 32 balls, having the batter top-edge an attempted big hit, and also bowled Suryakumar Yadav with his trademark drift into the right-hander.Shakib, 35, has become the backbone of the Bangladesh cricket team since he made his debut in August 2006. He is their highest wicket-taker in both Tests and ODIs too, and remains the only cricketer in the world to tally 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the shortest international format.Rated one of the world’s finest allrounders – he is currently ranked No. 1 by the ICC – Shakib has also had several stints as Bangladesh’s captain, including this one. He has played in T20 leagues in India (IPL), Australia (BBL), West Indies (CPL) and Pakistan (PSL), apart from the BPL at home in Bangladesh. All highlights of a career that has now racked up 381 matches and 430 wickets.Shakib’s reign at the top may not last too long, though. He’s outscoring Delap: Ipswich must rue not signing PL star now worth £67m

This season has been something of a roller coaster for Ipswich Town fans.

Kieran McKenna’s side came into the campaign as one of the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League, and while they are in the drop zone, they have played far better football than most would’ve predicted.

Moreover, with reinforcements signed last month and safety just three points away, there is still every chance they’ll be able to beat the drop, especially if Liam Delap keeps up his impressive form.

However, survival would be even more of a possibility had the club been able to secure one of their prior transfer targets, who’s currently outscoring the young striker.

Liam Delap's season so far

Following Ipswich’s surprise promotion last season, it was clear that they were going to need more firepower to stand any chance of remaining in the division for more than a single campaign.

So, the club turned to Manchester City’s young prospect Delap, who had spent 23/24 on loan with Championship outfit Hull City, and even though he had only racked up a haul of eight goals and two assists in 32 games, the Tractor Boys decided to splash £20m to bring him to Portman Road.

It may have been something of a gamble at the time, but as we know now, it’s one that has more than paid off.

For example, in just 25 games under McKenna, totalling 1806 minutes, the 22-year-old marksman has scored nine goals and provided two assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.27 games, or every 164.18 minutes.

However, it’s not just the output that makes the Winchester-born star such an important player for the Suffolk side, as his ability to hold up the ball, bring others into play and occupy opposition defenders also makes him a real handful.

With that said, while Delap is having a brilliant season, he is being outscored by another Premier League star the club tried to sign in the past.

The Premier League star Ipswich tried to sign

With how brilliantly Delap has played for Ipswich this season, the player in question has to be someone pretty special to be outscoring him, and they most certainly are.

Morgan Rogers is one of the most exciting players in the top flight, but before he moved to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023, McKenna told the press that the Tractor Boys were “certainly there or thereabouts to bringing him here a couple of times.”

Unfortunately for the Portman Road faithful, the Northern Irishman wasn’t able to get his man, and after impressing in the northeast, he earned a £16m move to Aston Villa, where he has gone from strength to strength.

For example, in just 33 appearances across the league, Champions League and FA Cup this season, the “magnificent” talent, as dubbed by former professional Stephan Warnock, has scored 11 goals and provided six assists.

Such an incredible tally more than justifies his new valuation of around £67m from CIES Football Observatory.

Ultimately, Ipswich have their own super talent in Delap, but we can’t help imagining that safety would be all but assured if they were able to get a hold of Rogers as well.

West Brom must regret losing EFL star who is outperforming Maja & Fellows

West Bromwich Albion left it extremely late last time out to hand new manager Tony Mowbray his second win back at the Baggies helm.

The clock had already ticked all the way down to the 96th-minute mark by the time Jayson Molumby delivered a last-gasp sucker punch for Sheffield Wednesday to deal with, resulting in the home masses jumping for joy whilst the Owls away support cursed their luck as a dramatic 2-1 victory was sealed.

Sunderland's former manager Tony Mowbray.

Mowbray will hope these wins in the Championship keep coming after a topsy-turvy start to life back in the Hawthorns hot seat, with the likes of Tom Fellows no doubt key to his promotion-chasing side picking up more crucial victories as the season edges closer to some tense games.

Fellows and Maja's importance to West Brom

Indeed, Fellows – despite only being on the pitch for 23 minutes – managed to add another assist to his glittering resume versus Danny Rohl’s men, with his last-gasp corner perfect for Molumby who instinctively flicked an effort home.

That bumps up Fellows’ ever-growing assist count for the Baggies in league action this season to a hefty 11, with two goals also coming the homegrown talent’s way reinforcing how stellar of a campaign he is experiencing so far.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

He is only topped in the West Brom ranks in terms of goal contributions by the injury-stricken Josh Maja, with the former Sunderland man boasting 12 goals and two assists himself before injury disaster struck.

Thankfully for Mowbray, the late loan addition of Adam Armstrong on transfer deadline day has eased this major blow somewhat, with the prolific EFL centre-forward helping himself to the opener against Wednesday before the carnage of Molumby’s winner ensued.

The West Brom player is now outperforming Maja & Fellows

West Brom have fallen victim to many top clubs poaching their young talents before they’ve fully bloomed over the years, with Morgan Rogers one that immediately springs to mind, having been a youth player at the Hawthorns for nine years until Manchester City swooped in.

This example actually involves Rogers’ current club, Aston Villa, with Finn Azaz relocating to nearby Villa Park in the summer of 2021 after making no senior appearances for his ex-employers.

Azaz didn’t gain any senior minutes in his new location, but it was a move to Middlesbrough last year that finally saw the 24-year-old really explode into life in the senior game in the second tier to the agony of his boyhood side.

Joining Michael Carrick’s men mid-way through the 2023/24 season from Plymouth Argyle didn’t end up fazing Azaz, as the 6 foot 1 attacker closed out his first mini campaign at the Riverside Stadium with a mightily impressive nine goal contributions from 20 league clashes.

He has come on leaps and bounds this season too with a staggering 17 goal contributions next to his name from 29 league appearances, leaving the likes of Maja and Fellows in the dust. It’s on that basis that they will surely regret losing him.

Carrick’s lavish praise of the 24-year-old for being the “whole package” last campaign now has even more substance behind it too, as Boro attempt to clinch a playoff spot courtesy of their star man’s typically captivating showings.

With Boro only three points behind West Brom in the current league standings, a fascinating tussle for a spot in the top six could soon take place, with Azaz wanting to presumably get one over on his ex-club to pile on even more pain for Mowbray and Co.

Tottenham forced into possible £750m takeover discount amid Qatari interest

ENIC could be forced to reduce their valuation of a Tottenham Hotspur takeover by £750 million, handing private Qatari investors a potential boost in their plans to buy the club in the form of a phased buyout.

Qatari consortium hatch plan to buy Tottenham

The Guardian and journalist Matt Hughes broke news earlier this week that unnamed private Qatari investors, who are not linked to Sheikh Jassim or the government-backed QSI, are hatching plans to instigate an eventual takeover of Spurs.

The possible acquisition of ENIC’s majority shares could apparently come through the form of a phased buyout, and it is believed that these Middle Eastern investors could keep hold of chairman Daniel Levy in a long-term club management role, in a controversial move considering how divisive the board chief is right now.

While Spurs sources insist that they’re not currently involved in takeover negotiations, this group of private Qatari bidders are apparently “seeking to buy” Tottenham, (The Guardian), so the prospect of the Lilywhites eventually gaining new ownership appears to be getting more and more real.

This comes as supporters plan more protests against Levy and ENIC after Spurs’ clash with Man United in the Premier League on Sunday. Protest group ‘change for Tottenham’ released an online poster in the build up to this weekend.

“No matter the result, applaud the players as they leave the pitch. Show them our appreciation for their efforts.

“Once the players have left the pitch, remain in the stadium and gather in the South Stand lower for a sit-in protest. From there, we will make it clear to the board – who will hear us from their luxury lounge – that enough is enough.”

Previous reports have claimed that ENIC value Tottenham at up to £4.5 billion, whilst other more recent reports state that the value of a takeover would be around £3.75 billion.

Tottenham forced into potential £750 million takeover discount

Now, according to Football Insider, it is believed this figure could drop by a further amount. Indeed, a Tottenham takeover would now likely be worth up to £3 billion – around £750 million below ENIC’s current price of £3.75 billion – with interested parties apparently unwilling to shell out the latter figure.

Interestingly, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness recently suggested that the interest from Qatar in Spurs has been there for quite some time, and parties from that state could now pay less for a full acquisition of the club.

“There’s no doubt there is real interest from Qatar,” said Wyness. “I think a London club like Spurs fit the profile, but the problem is with PSG and how they’d handle that with the Champions League rules. But at the moment, Spurs aren’t threatening to make the Champions League.

“Qatar like to invest in clubs with big assets, like the new stadium. I do think it would work. We might see something develop out of this.”
