Porter claims 10 wickets for the match to boost Essex's title hopes

Only 506 runs scored across four innings as Hampshire’s ambitions take a hit

ECB Reporters Network27-Jul-2023Jamie Porter claimed 10 wickets for the match for the third time in his career as Essex boosted their LV= Insurance County Championship title hopes while destroying Hampshire’s chances.Quick Porter followed his first-innings 5 for 37 by snaring 5 for 46 in the second innings for match figures of 10 for 83.It was his first 10-for away from the Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford, first since 2018 and in his renaissance season he now has a Division One-leading 47 wickets.Chasing 83 to win, Kyle Abbott claimed 3 for 23 but Nick Browne’s 28 and Paul Walter’s 28 not out took Essex to their sixth win of the season with a six-wicket victory.Hampshire’s gamble to ask for a result pitch backfired as the usual Ageas Bowl seam-friendly pitch which flattens out never flattened out. That meant almost incessant seam movement, coupled with invariable bounce, made batting tricky – typified by Nick Gubbins’ 45 being the highest individual score of the game and only 506 runs coming in total across the four innings.Hampshire and Essex both knew going into the match that only the winner would realistically be able to challenge Surrey for the title.Surrey will land on at least 167 points – and more likely 183 – after the conclusion of their clash with Somerset. Essex are now up to 166 points and Hampshire on 135, with 72 points still available.Hampshire lost their remaining four wickets for nine runs in 25 balls – with Porter and Sam Cook sharing the spoils.James Fuller’s back-foot waft was caught behind to the ninth ball of the day and Abbott lasted four balls before he was brilliantly caught by a one-handed Simon Harmer pounce at second slip.Porter added Hampshire to Somerset and Worcestershire in his 10-for victims when John Turner drove to Harmer.Amid the churn of batters, Gubbins was still there having only moved his overnight score from 44 to 45. In seeing No.11 Mohammad Abbas arrive at the crease he aborted his patient style and was bowled attempting to slog across the line with Hampshire all out for 131.Essex had lost three wickets in their chase of 30 against Kent last week, albeit rushed by incoming rain. They threatened a similar wobble at the Ageas Bowl.Abbott picked up Alastair Cook nicking behind a drive to the 10th ball of the innings before Tom Westley – the division’s second highest run scorer – clipped to midwicket in the fourth over. But Hampshire’s early jubilation was drowned by Browne grafting with Walter – the pair chalking up 33 runs for the third wicket.Browne was put down at mid off by Liam Dawson before eventually falling lbw to Abbas but the damage he had made through his four boundaries was already fatal to Hampshire’s chances.Matt Critchley had the top of his off stump kissed by a beautiful Abbott in-ducker and Michael Pepper was softly dropped at square leg second ball with 29 still needed. But Pepper and Walter guided Essex to victory in the extra half an hour before lunch.

Gabriel Barbosa superou Luís Fabiano, ex-São Paulo, e Léo Gamalho, atualmente no Coritiba, no ranking histórico, empatando com Dodô, ex-Vasco, Fluminense e Botafogo.

Canelo vs Crawford: A Storm Raised in Riyadh

In boxing, timing is everything. And when Saudi Arabia chose its moment, the entire sport shifted. This is how Riyadh didn’t just host mega-fights, it changed what mega fights mean.

Canelo vs Crawford: The Fight of the Century Begins in Riyadh

In one of the most highly anticipated boxing events in recent memory, Riyadh Season officially kicked off the global media tour for the "Fight of the Century”. A historic clash between the Mexican superstar Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and undefeated American champion Terence "Bud" Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). The September 13 bout at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas marks a pivotal moment in boxing history. Still, its story began in Saudi Arabia, where both fighters faced off at the Bakr Al Sheddi Theater in Boulevard City during a fiery press conference that set social media ablaze.

GettyRiyadh Rewrites the Rules: No longer a host, now the author of the fight game.

When His Excellency Turki Alalshikh took the stage in Riyadh, flanked by two of boxing's pound-for-pound kings, he wasn't just announcing another fight — he was unveiling Saudi Arabia's latest strategic move in its combat sports revolution. As Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority and President of the Saudi Boxing Federation, Alalshikh has engineered what industry experts call "the most aggressive takeover in sports promotion history." The Riyadh launch;not Las Vegas or New York; speaks volumes about where boxing's true power now resides. From securing unprecedented Netflix deals to redefining fighter purses, Alalshikh's vision has transformed Saudi Arabia into the sport's undeniable epicenter, proving that the future of boxing is not just being fought in the ring, but orchestrated from Riyadh's command center.

AdvertisementGettyFrom Silence and Roar, Canelo’s control vs. Crawford’s climb.

Before they shared a stage in Riyadh, Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford had already carved out two of the most decorated careers in modern boxing, yet on entirely different terms.

Canelo Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs)

The face of Mexican boxing carries a legacy built on calculated aggression. His body attack (landing 42% on the midsection) systematically breaks opponents, while improved head movement under Eddy Reynoso has transformed him from a brawler to a complete fighter. But after struggling with mobile opponents like Bivol, questions linger: Can the 34-year-old adapt his pressure against boxing's most competent technician?

Terence "Bud" Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs)

Boxing's chameleon dominates with an eerie ability to shift stances mid-combination, landing 38% of power punches. His dismantling of Spence proved he thrives under bright lights. Now, jumping 21 pounds to challenge Canelo, he seeks what even Mayweather couldn't — Mexican glory on his resume. As he told before: "They will remember who stepped up when others made excuses."

The Price of Immortality For both, the reward is history. The cost? Everything.

For both Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford, September 13 isn't just a date, it's a defining moment that will cement their place in boxing history.

For Canelo:

This is about dominion. The Mexican star has controlled every aspect of his career for a decade, including selecting opponents, choosing venues, and even determining fight dates. But in Crawford, he faces an unprecedented challenge: an undefeated technician jumping two weight classes to dethrone him. At 34, Canelo must prove that his evolution can outwit boxing's sharpest mind, not just overpower smaller foes. A loss wouldn't just blemish his record — it would rewrite his entire era.

For Crawford:

This is his ultimate validation. Despite being undisputed in two divisions (and 36 years old), Crawford has fought in the shadows. His masterclass against Spence silenced doubters; defeating Canelo would obliterate them. The Omaha native risks everything — moving up 21 pounds, fighting in enemy territory, and facing boxing's biggest star. But the reward? A claim no one can dispute: the best pound-for-pound fighter of his generation, regardless of weight.

The contrast is stark:

Canelo defends his throne.

Crawford seeks to build his

One man's empire versus another's destiny

The Business Behind the Battle: Boxing’s New Operating System

This event isn’t just breaking pay-per-view records—it’s shattering boxing’s entire commercial model. Three partnerships reveal the shift:

Netflix: The streaming giant’s first foray into live boxing, “a potential reach of over 300 million households worldwide,” eliminates PPV barriers—but only because Saudi Arabia guaranteed the production scale.

GEA: More than a checkbook, the Authority dictates everything from press conference theatrics to fighter documentaries, turning athletes into cross-platform IP.

Legacy Players (Matchroom/CAA): Even boxing’s old guard now operates within Riyadh’s rules, as one insider admitted:

The lesson? Today’s mega-fights aren’t sold—they’re engineered.

Williamson has two weeks to prove fitness for ODI World Cup

Kane Williamson has two weeks to prove his fitness for the ODI World Cup after he linked up with the New Zealand squad in England to continue his rehab from the ACL injury picked up at the IPL.When Williamson suffered the injury in April he was viewed as only a very slim chance of making the World Cup, but his progress in recent weeks has been encouraging and he will be given every opportunity to prove he is ready. The 15-player squads need to be submitted to the ICC by September 5 but can be changed without approval up to September 28.Related

“[We’ve] got about two weeks from now until we name that side,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. “Going to give him every chance and use that full amount of time.”He’s in full rehab mode, he’s back batting in the nets again which is great to see. He’s progressing really well but again there’s a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets to where we need him to be.”It could be that Williamson will be included even if he won’t be ready for the early matches in the World Cup, or another option could be to have him as one of the travelling reserves although there would then need to be an injury in the original squad for him to be brought in. There will also be longer-term considerations taken into account.”They are all the things we are weighing up right now,” Stead said. “There’s a chance that even if Kane was named that he wouldn’t be available right at the start of the tournament. But he also might be, and he also might not be ready.”It’s still a little bit of crystal-ball gazing [about] where he will be at. Yes, of course, we want him at the World Cup but there is that bigger picture in mind that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career.”They’ll be honest conversations that Kane and I will have with each other around exactly where he is at, to make sure we get the best outcome for our team but also the best outcome for Kane Williamson and his long-term career.”Meanwhile, Jimmy Neesham has been withdrawn from the T20I squad for the series against England so he can return home early ahead of the birth of his first child. Cole McConchie will now remain on the tour.”The birth of a child is a special time and we are a family environment,” Stead said. “We are glad to be able to support Jimmy in heading home.”Neesham played two of the T20Is against UAE in Dubai before taking up a brief Hundred deal with Oval Invincibles who he helped to the title on Sunday with an unbeaten 57 off 33 balls, adding 127 with Tom Curran after the team had been 34 for 5.

'Rose to the challenge' – Pedro de la Vega proud of Seattle Sounders' effort despite 2-1 defeat to Botafogo in Club World Cup opener

    WHAT HAPPENED

Even though the Seattle Sounders fell 2-1 to Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo in their Club World Cup opener, Pedro de la Vega praised his team's competitive spirit in the game.

The Argentine winger, who had two late chances including a saved shot in stoppage time, emphasized that the Sounders went "toe-to-toe" with one of South America's elite clubs, particularly during a dominant second-half performance where they outshot their opponents 19-5.

“We didn’t know what to expect,” De la Vega told FIFA's website. “There was a lot of uncertainty about how the game was going to go, but I think we played brilliantly and rose to the challenge. We have to continue playing this way, we have to put up a fight.

“We played well and we had a lot of chances. It’s disappointing because we had two clear chances, and in games like this, you have to put them away. If you only have a couple of chances, you have to score… But we have to look on the positive side: we played a great game against a difficult opponent.”

De la Vega also admitted to being surprised by the level of the Sounders.

“I was surprised by our level. Thinking back, coming here last year wasn’t an easy step for me because it’s a very physical league," he said. "You could see it in the match: the tempo never stopped and we even overpowered them at times. I was uncertain of where we stood, what level we are at, and we went toe to toe with them and could even have come away with a better result.”

    WHAT BRIAN SCHMETZER SAID

The Sounders head coach, Brian Schmetzer, also praised his side’s second-half performance.

"If we can play like that, we can compete,” Schmetzer said. “We want to be competitive, to showcase our players, our team, our city. I think we represented ourselves well tonight. I’m very proud; we competed against a very strong team and created many chances.

“We can’t blame the players for their mistakes or fault them for their initiative or ideas. Igor Jesus is worth what they paid for him because if he has a chance, he takes it. We need enough chances to score and we were able to create some today.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Sounders showed they could control large portions of the match against the Brazilian giants, creating numerous scoring opportunities that, with better finishing, might have produced a different result against the Copa Libertadores champions.

Sam Curran clinches thriller for Invincibles after Will Jacks' all-round show

Oval Invincibles completed the double over London Spirit in a dramatic last-ball thriller to win by two runs and move clear at the top of the Men’s Hundred table.Matt Critchley threatened to steal the win for Spirit with an unbeaten 32 off 13 balls before a Sam Curran no-ball from what should have been the final delivery of the game gave Spirit a second chance with three needed. But tailender Chris Wood could not make contact as the hosts defended 189, which owed to some big hitting from Match Hero Will Jacks who clubbed 68 off 42 before claiming 2 for 22.Heinrich Klaasen also thrashed 46 not out with Curran adding a blistering 35 despite Daryl Mitchell claiming 2 for 16 from 10 balls.Adam Rossington was instrumental in leading the Spirit chase with four huge sixes as he opened with 61 from 32 balls. The opening stages of the match were difficult for Invincibles as they failed to score from five balls, before Jason Roy and Jacks found their fluency in a partnership of 79. The visitors ended the stand when Mitchell had Roy caught behind with his first ball and then Jacks was taken in the deep by Zak Crawley.Klaasen picked up from where Jacks left off as he scored four sixes and he powered Invincibles at the death, while Curran caught the mood of the match before being caught out on the boundary by Mitchell. With the visitors chasing 189 for the win, the partnership of Crawley and Rossington was influential as they scored 58 for none at the end of the powerplay. Rossington reached his half-century off 22 and while Crawley struggled for his timing Spirit kept rolling as the partnership flourished to reduce the requirement to needing 99 off 55.Invincibles got their breakthrough as Curran bowled Crawley off the thigh pad before Jacks claimed two quick wickets, including the key scalp of Rossington.Spirit’s chase started to falter with Matthew Wade out for 19 off 15 balls as three wickets went down in eight balls. But Critchley then found his groove, smashing Curran for back-to-back sixes, before Wood slogged Zak Chappell for four to leave Spirit needing 17 off Curran’s final set of five.Critchley clubbed the third ball into the crowd and thought he had done the same next ball only for Ross Whiteley to somehow palm it back into play. Curran’s no-ball then gave Spirit once last chance but it was too much for Wood as the hosts held on.

Aston Villa in pole position to sign star in total deal that may cost £130m

Aston Villa are thought to be best placed to sign a star in a transfer that could cost a total of £130m over five years, according to a former scout.

Rashford impressing at Aston Villa as Romano shares update

Marcus Rashford has been catching the eye at Villa Park after joining Villa on loan with a £40m option to buy in the summer from Manchester United.

Under Unai Emery, Rashford has impressed enough to break back into the England side, now under Thomas Tuchel, and he recently scored his first goals for Villa against Preston North End in the FA Cup and followed that up with another against Brighton on Wednesday.

There have been rumours of a permanent move to the Midlands for the forward, and Fabrizio Romano recently shared what he knows about the situation.

“Aston Villa are very happy with Marcus Rashford in general,” said Romano.

“So I don’t think, in any case, if they decided to trigger the £40m option clause, I don’t think they would do that just to sell the player again. So in that case, I see Marcus Rashford staying at Aston Villa and having the opportunity to make something long-term with the club. What I can say about Marcus Rashford is that it’s going to be really important to understand financially what happens for Aston Villa.”

Now, another promising claim has been made on the 27-year-old sticking around at Villa Park.

Aston Villa in pole position to sign Rashford in potential £130m package

Ex-scout Mick Brown now believes that Aston Villa are in the best position to sign Rashford on a permanent transfer. There have been claims by Football Insider that a transfer could cost £130m due to Rashford’s £350,000-per-week wage over a five-year period alongside the £40m fee.

Talking to FI, Brown said: “Marcus going out on loan has been a win-win. There was no way his situation at Man United was going to improve, so from that point of view he’s gone away and improved his position. There’s never been any doubt about Marcus’ talent, and now he’s found a platform to display that.

“Aston Villa have gained from it because they were brave enough to take him on loan. Now, I think they’ll be in the best position to keep him on a permanent deal even though there’s going to be interest from elsewhere.

Aston Villa ready to offer 5 year-contract to "unbelievable" Emery target

He’s ready to leave…

By
Tom Cunningham

Apr 2, 2025

“He’s established there and it’s been a good deal for everybody involved. I think there’s more to come for him there now that he’s got his first couple of goals – that link up with Asensio has been excellent. If they can keep that going and Villa can keep him at the club they’ll be much better for it.

“Manchester United will no doubt benefit as well because they can maximise his price tag when if he had stayed he was a depreciating asset.”

Rashford is also of interest to Bayern Munich, with reports at the end of February saying that the German giants are going all in to sign the winger. However, Brown believes Villa are best placed to seal a transfer, although it could be very expensive for NSWE between now and 2030.

Middlesex hunting new overseas player as Malan returns home

London neighbours Surrey have secured the return of Kemar Roach for the Championship run-in

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Aug-2023Middlesex have announced that they are on the hunt for an overseas player in their bid to avoid relegation from Division One of the County Championship, with Pieter Malan leaving the club early after a poor season with the bat.Malan, who won three Test caps for South Africa in early 2020, re-signed for the summer after helping Middlesex secure promotion at the end of last summer but has struggled for form. He managed 221 runs at 14.73 across his eight Championship fixtures, with more ducks (five) than half-centuries (two). He also played eight games for them in the Blast, scoring 206 runs at a strike rate of 137.33, and did not feature in their One Day Cup campaign, with opportunities instead afforded to younger players. He has now returned to South Africa to captain Boland in domestic cricket.Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said that Malan “would be the first to admit that this season has been a struggle for him on the field”. He added: “It most certainly isn’t through lack of effort and hard work on his part… however, sometimes things just don’t work out.”Middlesex, who sit third-bottom in Division One and are locked into a relegation battle with Kent and Northamptonshire, confirmed in a statement: “[We are] now looking for a replacement to feature in the run-in to the end of the season, with four crucial County Championship matches remaining.”Kemar Roach is returning to Surrey•Getty ImagesMeanwhile, south of the River Thames, Surrey have secured the return of Kemar Roach as they look to secure a second successive Championship title. Roach took 18 wickets in five appearances for them earlier this year before returning home, but is coming back to South London for the run-in.Surrey are 17 points clear of second-placed Essex heading into the final month of fixtures, and will be without three fast bowlers on England duty in Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran and Reece Topley – though Curran and Topley have featured in one Championship match between them this season.Roach said: “Surrey is a second home for me and I’m looking forward to getting back down to business ahead of three massive games. We know what the goal is for the team and I’m going to give everything to help achieve it.”
