USMNT striker Patrick Agyemang completes $8 million transfer to Derby County as Charlotte FC net club record fee

U.S. men's national team striker Patrick Agyemang has officially completed his long-rumored move to Derby County, the English Championship club confirmed on Tuesday. The forward will head head to England from Charlotte FC, who have reportedly received a club-record $8 million (£5.8m) while maintaining a sell-on clause.

Agyemang, the club's fifth signing of the summer, has signed a four-year contract through 2029, but will have a delayed start to his season at Derby. He will undergo surgery to address a lingering hernia injury, making it unlikely he'll feature in the opening games of the 2025-26 Championship season.

Agyemang is the lone USMNT player to feature in all 12 games in 2025. He scored five goals since making his debut in January and started for the U.S. throughout the Gold Cup, including the loss to Mexico in the tournament final. He scored 10 goals for Charlotte FC last season and already had eight goals and two assists in the first half of the MLS campaign.

"It's exciting," Agyemang said. "I have been hearing good things about the club and the fans as well and I always wanted to be a part of something special and now to finally be here, it's amazing. I've heard about [the move] once I was getting into the national team for the Gold Cup. And obviously, in the moment, you're like, 'That's something I’m interested in!' but you want to focus on what you're doing.

"Then, as it starts to progress, you start to look more into it and there is this project I'd love to be a part of. I just hoped for it to get across the line and happily, it did."

He said he's excited about the challenge ahead.

"I'm expecting it to be very tough," he said. "Definitely hard-working, and you're playing a lot of games, so I know it's going to be trying at times, but it's all about how you deal with it. I think for me, I usually like to take those big next steps, and there's going to be adjustment periods, but I know once I get through that, I should be fine."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The move is a gamble by Agyemang, who joins a Derby team that finished just outside of the relegation zone last season. Derby will face plenty of challenges in the rough-and-tumble Championship, and how Agyemang handles those challenges could determine whether or not he heads to the World Cup with the USMNT next summer.

The 24-year-old striker has made a case to be involved for the 2026 tournament, but will now be in the same league as fellow No. 9 competitors Josh Sargent, Haji Wright and Damion Downs. Additionally, the likes of Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are expected to lead the striker competition for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

Overall, Agyemang has bet on himself to thrive in the Championship and, if he does, he'll move even closer to sealing his place in the USMNT squad going forward.

Naseem Shah moves to Islamabad United from Quetta Gladiators

It is however not yet officially confirmed that Naseem will be fully fit for the start of the PSL

Danyal Rasool02-Dec-2023

Naseem Shah has played for Quetta Gladiators since 2020•PCB/PSL

Naseem Shah has moved from Quetta Gladiators to Islamabad United in one of the most sensational trades of the PSL, ending weeks of speculation about his destination next season. After a tussle in which at least three teams competed for his signing, United won out, ending the battle for one of the most in-demand fast bowlers in Pakistan cricket. In return, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Wasim Jnr have moved from United to Gladiators before the transfer window shuts.Just days ago, Multan Sultans appeared to have beaten United to Naseem’s signature, and ESPNcricinfo understands they were on the cusp of making an official statement announcing the move. However, United’s interest in Naseem predated Sultans’, and ended up outlasting it.It’s understood Naseem’s move away from the Gladiators was partially influenced by the player pushing for the move himself after several frustrating years at the franchise. While the Gladiators were the most consistent team of the PSL over the first four years of its existence, reaching three finals and winning the title in 2019, it’s been a dramatic reversal since. They are the only side to have missed out on the playoffs each of the last four years, finishing fifth twice, and propping up the table in the other two seasons. It has meant Naseem, who has only ever played for the Gladiators and made his debut in 2020, has never reached the playoff stages of the PSL in his career. While Naseem is now recognised as a generational talent across formats in Pakistan, the PSL is yet to truly see evidence of that ability. His 29 matches have produced 26 wickets – nine of them in two individual games in 2022 – and his economy rate, strike rate, and average are all worse at the PSL than his T20 career in general. It is not yet officially confirmed that Naseem will be fully fit for the start of the PSL after a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the final part of the Asia Cup and all of the World Cup. He will also miss Pakistan’s tour of Australia and New Zealand, and is currently in the United Kingdom as he works his way back. While he is believed to be on track to ensure he is available for the PSL, this has not been officially confirmed.

Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar to assist chief selector Wahab Riaz

The PCB has appointed former international cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum and Salman Butt as consultant members to chief selector Wahab Riaz. The trio will take up their role in the selection panel with immediate effect. Their first assignment as consultant members begins with Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand that gets underway from January 12 after the conclusion of their Test tour to Australia. The PCB said that when the trio are not engaged in selection duties, they might be given additional tasks such as conducting skill camps. Both Akmal and Anjum have had selection responsibilities before. Akmal, who represented Pakistan in 53 Tests, 157 ODIs and 58 T20Is in a career spanning 15 years before retiring from all forms of cricket this February, was named chair of PCB’s Junior Selection committee earlier this year. He was also appointed chair of an eight-member selection committee, which would conduct Under-13, Under-16 and Under-19 trials for the selection of regional and district teams.Related

  • Hafeez to serve as Pakistan head coach for tour of Australia and NZ

  • Akmal, Sami, Hameed part of Rasheed-led men's selection committee

Anjum played one Test, 62 ODIs and two T20Is for Pakistan, and was part of a three-man committee when Shahid Afridi was named interim chief selector of the Pakistan men’s national team alongside Abdul Razzaq later last year. However, this is the first time former captain Butt will be assuming an official role with the PCB since his return from a long ban for his role in the spot-fixing scandal of 2010. He played 33 Tests, 78 ODIs and 24 T20Is, and was the captain when he was handed the ban. Butt never returned to Pakistan colours after that, though he did play first-class cricket and was also offered a commentator’s job by the PCB in 2020.The appointments will raise some eyebrows. Butt was banned and has served time for his role in the 2010 scandal, but both Wahab and Akmal were questioned in and around that same episode. Akmal was sent a notice by the ICC after the T20 World Cup in 2010 – much before the spot-fixing incident broke out that year – though he was later cleared to be selected by Pakistan. Akmal did not play another Test after the episode at Lord’s, though he did feature in Pakistan’s white-ball sides.Wahab was also questioned by Scotland Yard in the immediate aftermath of the Lord’s Test that year, but was never charged with any offence. He was appointed the new chief selector of the senior men’s team two weeks back after Inzamam-ul-Haq stepped down from his position in the wake of conflict-of-interest allegations.Much later in the day, the PCB put out a statement to say that the consultants would not have any independent decision-making powers. “Consultant members assist the chief selector by providing recommendations, collecting feedback and identifying top-performing talent in domestic cricket,” it said. “Their role is to present this information to the chief selector and the selection committee for consideration in their decision-making process. The Consultant Members do not have any independent decision-making powers.”Amid the raft of changes, Mohammad Hafeez was also appointed as team director, and will also serve as Pakistan’s head coach in Australia and New Zealand. The squad for the three-match Test series in Australia was picked on November 20. The series will be Shan Masood’s first as Pakistan captain after Babar Azam stepped down from the position in all formats last month.

Cummins changes the day after Shafique and Masood hint at dominance

Captain Pat Cummins clean bowled Babar Azam with a gem of a delivery during a spectacular spell late on day two to trigger a Pakistan collapse as Australia gained control of the Boxing Day Test. With the MCG surface seemingly flattening in sunny conditions, Pakistan had moved confidently to 124 for 1 before Cummins took over with three wickets as Australia look set for a valuable lead on the first innings. It was a disappointment for Pakistan having mustered a resolute performance for much of the day. After dismissing Australia for 318 by lunch, Pakistan responded well with opener Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood building a 90-run partnership as they scored briskly after tea.Having batted watchfully through the second session, Shafique put the foot down with several superb strokes square of the wicket as he raced past his half-century.Masood before the series promised his team would play a proactive brand and he led from the front by charging at offspinner Nathan Lyon and hitting him down the ground to good effect. It was the type of domination rarely seen from Pakistan during more than two decades of misery in Australia, where they have lost 15 straight Test matches. But Cummins took it upon himself to change the game with a magical five-over spell where he accounted firstly for Shafique with a brilliant return catch in his follow through. Then he renewed his battle with Babar, who Pakistan desperately needed to stand up if they were to close in on Australia’s first innings. Cummins in Perth had worked over Babar before having him nicked off in Pakistan’s second innings. He produced an even better delivery with a pearler that had late inward seam movement to befuddle Babar and hit the top of off stump. Having removed Babar for 1, Cummins leapt in the air in celebration and Pakistan could not recover from the dispiriting dismissal of their talisman.Lyon exacted revenge when Masood, shortly after reaching his half-century, holed out attempting another big stroke. It was Lyon’s second wicket having earlier removed opener Imam-ul-Haq in his first match since taking his 500th Test wicket in the series-opener.In his 16th innings of a fledgling Test cricket, Saud Shakeel was dismissed for the first time under 20 when he was knocked over on 9 by a stellar delivery from quick Josh Hazlewood.Cummins returned to the attack shortly before stumps and was met by an extraordinary six from recalled Mohammad Rizwan, who flicked him audaciously over deep backward square in a shot more reminiscent of white-ball cricket. But Cummins was not to be denied and capped what might prove to be a game-changing performance by dismissing allrounder Agha Salman.Shan Masood scored an eventful half-century but could not carry on•Associated Press

Pakistan’s hopes of avoiding a hefty first innings deficit rest with Rizwan, who was in aggressive form in his return having been contentiously overlooked for the first Test with selectors sticking with incumbent wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed.Pakistan’s calamitous finish negated their earlier hard work having clawed back into the game with seven wickets in a prolonged first session after Australia resumed on 187 for 3 following a rain-interrupted opening day.Pakistan’s quicks were backed up by a much better fielding effort. After several shoddy dropped catches so far this series, they hung on to tough chances in the outfield while wicketkeeper Rizwan produced a spectacular one-handed take diving to his right to dismiss counterpart Alex Carey. But having enjoyed favourable bowling conditions, after Masood elected to field, Pakistan rued inconsistencies from their quicks while 52 extras bumped up Australia’s total.Spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi’s tough start to the series continued and he finished with 2 for 85 from 27 overs. He has been unable to consistently find the right length and his pace continues to be down in what has been a bane in recent times.Quick Aamer Jamal continued his strong start to Test cricket with three wickets, including Marnus Labuschagne who top-scored for Australia with 63 in the only half-century in the innings. Having entered the match averaging just 35 in Test cricket this year, marked by troubles outside the off stump, Labuschagne looked far more assured as he navigated the tricky surface.Labuschagne combined well with a confident Mitchell Marsh, who hit a quick 41 on the back of his twin half-centuries in Perth as he cements his position at No.6. But Australia lost their last six wickets for 68 as Pakistan’s momentum continued into their batting until Cummins’ unforgettable spell.

Speaking to reporters, the English defender said: "I said at the start of this tournament that our plan is to win it [Club World Cup] and people looked at me as if I was crazy. So I'm going to say the exact same thing now going into the Premier League and Champions League. This is the biggest trophy I've ever won. I think the Club World Cup will be bigger than the Champions League and we were the first team to win it. It was a statement victory and, in the future, if we keep winning trophies then everyone will give us the love that we deserve. But we'll only know that in he future. I think we're ready and we'll see next season."

Colwill added on Chelsea targeting more major silverware next season: "We're a team and that's in the Chelsea identity. You stick together no matter what. I think players like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, they started that and we're carrying it on. They were all amazing players, the best players who won a lot but we've got the best players in our team — young players for sure — and that's our plan, to win the biggest trophies for Chelsea.
