Better than Buonanotte: Chelsea hold talks to sign £86m gem after Garnacho

There’s no denying Chelsea have been one of the biggest spenders in the transfer market over the last few years – subsequently playing a huge role in their Club World Cup success this summer.

However, the next step for Enzo Maresca is claiming Premier League glory – an achievement that hasn’t been done at Stamford Bridge since the 2016/17 campaign.

Over the last few days, a £40m transfer has been agreed with Manchester United for the signature of Alejandro Garnacho after tracking the Argentine all summer long.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachoduring training

The 21-year-old will add key depth to the left-wing department, potentially battling fellow new addition Jamie Gittens for a starting role in the Blues’ frontline.

His arrival will take the club’s summer spending to around the £300m mark, but it could yet reach new levels with a move for another talent before Monday’s deadline.

Chelsea’s hunt for new signings after Garnacho

Alongside Garnacho, Chelsea have previously been interested in a move for his United teammate Kobbie Mainoo, who’s rapidly dropped down Ruben Amorim’s pecking order.

The midfielder stated his desire to leave on loan earlier this week, but as it stands, the Red Devils are reluctant to allowing the 20-year-old to depart – even on a temporary basis.

However, another midfielder has emerged on their shortlist in the form of Barcelona star Fermin Lopez – that’s according to GIVEMESPORT journalist Ben Jacobs.

He’s claimed that talks have been held between Maresca’s side and the LaLiga giants over a move for the 22-year-old talent before Monday’s transfer deadline.

It’s also been confirmed that the player has spoken with the manager himself, but any deal would be an expensive one – with the Spaniard currently valued at €100m (£86m).

Why Chelsea’s £86m target is a bigger talent than Buonanotte

In an attempt to further the squad, Chelsea have turned their attention to Brighton & Hove Albion star Facundo Buonanotte – subsequently making a surprise move for his signature.

It was reported in recent days that a deal has been agreed for the Argentine, which will see him join the Blues on a season-long loan for the 2025/26 campaign.

Such a move doesn’t include a buy option at the end of the season, but they do have first choice on his future should they decide to want to make such a deal permanent.

Given his tally of 31 appearances in the Premier League throughout 2024/25, the 20-year-old has the experience needed to have an impact in the club’s quest for title glory.

However, he may be further down Maresca’s plans in 2025/26, especially if they were to land a deal for Fermin before the window slams shut on Monday night.

When comparing the pair’s respective stats from the recent campaign, the Barça star managed to dominate in key areas – potentially being an excellent addition despite his hefty price tag.

Fermin, who’s been labelled “incredible” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, achieved a higher tally of goals and assists – evidently offering a more potent threat in front of goal.

His underlying stats are just as impressive, subsequently completing more progressive passes per 90, with more of his efforts being into the final third – highlighting the creative dominance he possesses over Buonanotte.

Lopez’s talents in possession are further reflected in his higher take-on success rate, whilst also producing more carries into the opposition box per 90.

It’s clear he can glide past the opposition, as seen by his aforementioned figures, but the Spaniard also has the end product – something which would massively aid Maresca’s hunt for top-flight glory this season.

£86m would be another mammoth addition given the previous money spent this summer, but it’s an investment that could prove worthwhile if the 22-year-old continues on his current trajectory.

Such a deal would be bad news for Buonanotte, subsequently dropping him further down the pecking order immediately after his own arrival – but it’s safe to say a deal for Lopez would be a massive statement from the hierarchy.

'I can't watch Mason Mount play left wing-back!' – Gary Neville destroys Ruben Amorim over baffling Man Utd tactics with comparison made to Erik ten Hag's final weeks before sack

Manchester United suffered another dismal result against Brentford, losing 3-1 to leave fans and pundits alike questioning Ruben Amorim's approach. Gary Neville singled out the decision to play Mason Mount at left-back as particularly baffling and symptomatic of a deeper malaise at the club. The Red Devils are struggling to find any consistency in their performances and results.

Amorim facing increasing calls to be sacked

Neville's scathing assessment comes amid mounting pressure on Amorim, despite significant investment in the squad. The consistent chopping and changing of the defensive line, coupled with seemingly nonsensical tactical decisions like Mount at left wing-back, are raising serious doubts about the manager's ability to turn things around. United fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress and clear direction. On the latest edition of the , the host took aim at Amorim’s calls.

  • Tactics and personnel decisions questioned by Man Utd legend

"There was something that happened in that game yesterday that I mentioned on my podcast two or three weeks ago that I said we couldn't see again… when you're putting Mason Mount at left wing-back and he's ended up at left wing-back again yesterday in the last five minutes to the game, it starts to look awful," Neville said.

"Ruben Amorim’s had a pre-season. He's had a week now in between each of his games nearly or most of the weeks because Manchester United aren't in Europe. Yet, the performances are as poor as ever. The results are catastrophic really in Manchester United terms.

"You can't put Mason Mount at left wing-back. I'm sorry, it just can't happen. I can't… I can't watch Mason Mount play left wing back in a football team. I struggle at times to watch him in in his position, but actually putting him out there on the left wing is just or left wing back is ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

"The manager's obviously a good coach. He's had a great record in Portugal, but it's not clicking at all. It's not clicking. And the thing is for me, when I said just before, maybe I didn't finish what I was going to say, but it looked to me like I said, the players and the ideas are not connecting at all. You could just see the body language in their faces.

"The other thing that I've said, and I said it under [Erik] ten Hag towards the end, he keeps changing his back four. That's what I used to say under Ten Hag. He didn't play with the back five. Kept changing his back four, his centre-backs… You cannot continually keep changing your back three and back five. It's impossible. I mean, that is the sort of part of the pitch where you need reliability and you need continuity to build relationships."

  • Getty Images Sport

INEOS and Ratcliffe not spared of blame

Amorim was not the only one to face criticism from Neville, with United’s leadership team as a whole also coming under fire.

He added: "You're going to start seeing very, very, very big questions being asked of the ownership. Big questions. They brought a young manager in. He's played a completely different system. They've invested in a completely different system. They brought [Patrick] Dorgu in and they brought other players. And if they were to be 14, 15, 16th in October, which was where I said at the start of the season, if Manchester United are where they were last season in October, it's not a one-off. It becomes what you are and it becomes a pattern and then managers come under huge pressure.

"That's why I'm worried. That's why I'm worried because this is not going to go away and it's going to build in this next week or so.

  • Man Utd's next game: Win needed against Sunderland to ease pressure

United are back in action on Saturday when they host newly-promoted Sunderland, who sit fifth in the Premier League through six games of the season despite being tipped for relegation before the start of the campaign. A solid defensive display in their next match is crucial to ease concerns.

Mbeumo 2.0: "Cantona of his generation" now "wants" D-Day move to Man Utd

It would be fair to say that it’s been a reasonably successful transfer window for Manchester United so far this summer.

On top of shipping off a few unwanted stars, like Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund, they’ve massively improved Ruben Amorim’s attack.

The triumvirate of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo has the potential to be one of the very best in the Premier League, although even with them in the side, there are a couple of areas that still need addressing.

Fortunately, it looks like the Red Devils are closing in on another signing who has been compared to Eric Cantona and could be viewed as a Mbuemo repeat.

Manchester United target their new Catona

According to a recent report from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United remain interested in signing Emiliano Martínez.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, the Italian journalist goes further, revealing that personal terms have now been agreed and that the Argentinian shot-stopper now “wants to join” the Red Devils.

Romano does not state just how much Aston Villa might want for their £150k-per-week star, but reports from earlier in the summer claimed that the Aston Villa ace may cost around £40m.

Even then, for a player of his quality, that may well be a price worth paying, especially as he has been compared to Cantona and could be seen in a similar light to Mbeumo.

How Martínez compares to Catona and Mbeumo

Before examining the reasons Martinez could be considered another Mbeumo for Manchester United, it’s worth looking into this comparison to Cantona, as the retired goalscorer is a legend of the club and English football.

In this instance, it stems from Sky Sports analyst Dougie Critchley, who boldly described the Argentine as the “Cantona of his generation.”

It might sound like a wild take, especially as the two internationals play, or played, in totally different positions, but when you take where they played out of the equation, it starts to make a lot more sense.

Outside of scoring for fun, what was the Frenchman known for? Arrogance and bravado.

Now, that might sound like a bad thing, and outside of football it may well be, but in the context of the beautiful game, it is most certainly a positive, and a massive one at that.

Eric Cantona – in-article

The former United magician was a natural-born entertainer and someone who thrived on the biggest stage, which is exactly how you would describe the World Cup-winning Villa man.

On top of pulling out world-class save after world-class save in the biggest games, he is a natural entertainer, someone rival fans love to hate, but would love to have at their club.

With that cleared up, why could he then also be another Mbeumo for Amorim and Co?

Well, this comparison is all down to the club signing a ready-made Premier League-proven superstar who could come right into the starting line-up for the next game.

After all, the former Arsenal ace has won two of the last two Yashin Trophies and won two of the last three FIFA Best Goalkeeper awards.

As if that wasn’t enough, he also won last 24/25’s Premier League Save of the Season for his magnificent stop against Nottingham Forest.

Ultimately, Martinez possesses the same swagger and confidence as Cantona, and the proven track record of Mbuemo, so even if his price tag is a little high, Man United should do everything in their power to bring him to Old Trafford before 7pm.

Everton tell "great" star to find a new club as Moyes reaches boiling point

After leaving David Moyes unimpressed during pre-season, Everton have now reportedly told one player to find a new club before the end of the transfer window.

Everton still seeking reinforcements

Even with Jack Grealish and Thierno Barry already signed and delivered, Everton are still in the market for attacking additions. The Friedkin Group will know how important it is to add goals to Moyes’ Everton side after they were outscored by every team outside the relegation zone in the Premier League last season.

Barry and Grealish represent a solid start, but it could be argued that the Toffees still need one more arrival. Just who that arrival is remains the big question, however. If recent rumours are anything to go by, then those at the Hill Dickinson are certainly still in the mood for reinforcements.

According to recent reports, Everton have submitted an opening offer worth around £37m to sign Artem Dovbyk from AS Roma, who are also owned by Friedkin.

Whether the American owners can help push the deal through remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that the Roma forward would hand Moyes a deadly strike partner for Barry this season.

Two players who outperformed their expected goals and reached double figures, Everton would be adding 28 league goals to their side if they combined Barry and Dobyk this season.

Of course, however, any deal would need to advance in routine fashion to get over the line at this stage with around two weeks remaining until the transfer window slams shut.

Meanwhile, it’s not just incomings that Everton are focusing on. As one striker arrives, another has reportedly been told to find a new club.

Everton tell Beto to find a new club

According to Football Insider, Everton have now told Beto to find a new club with Moyes unhappy about his attitude during pre-season and seemingly at the end of his tether. The towering forward has only been at the club for a year and, to his credit, showed signs of finding his best form under Moyes before pre-season reportedly undid all of his good work.

Beto

In a ruthless decision by Friedkin and Moyes, Beto could go from the centre of praise to an Everton outcast if reports are anything to go by. And given the earlier interest of Leeds United this summer, the Yorkshire club could now be ones to watch as the door opens to sign the Portuguese striker.

Just how Beto and Moyes’ relationship has reached this point will be the big talking point if the forward does depart. It was only back in May that the Everton boss told reporters: “He’s a great boy, I’ve got to say.

Arteta shares what he's "already" seeing from Gyokeres behind-the-scenes at Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Viktor Gyokeres for what he’s “already” doing behind-the-scenes, as the Swede gears up to face-off against his former boss, Ruben Amorim, at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Gyokeres is poised for his highly-anticipated Premier League debut when the north Londoners travel to Man United for their opening top flight game of the 2025/2026 season – a match where former top Arsenal target, Benjamin Sesko, will likely also be making his first competitive appearance for the Red Devils.

Gyokeres

Arsenal attempted to sign Sesko last summer and in January, but that is all ancient history now, with Gyokeres coming to N5 in the Slovenian’s stead after two years of free-scoring for Sporting CP in Portugal.

The 27-year-old joined Arteta’s side in a deal worth up to £64 million, including potential add-ons, whilst putting pen to paper on a five-year contract and officially ending Arsenal’s long hunt for a prolific number nine.

Gyokeres now dons the number 14 shirt, once worn by Gunners legend Thierry Henry (no pressure!), and Arsenal supporters were treated to glimpses of his quality during pre-season.

The ex-Coventry City star scored a thumping header in their 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Emirates Cup last weekend, attacking the ball with gusto after a great run into the box, and perhaps giving Arteta a small taste of what’s to come.

Gyokeres has been tipped as a potentially game-changing signing in Arsenal’s quest to end their two-decade-long wait for a Premier League title, and nothing Arteta has witnessed so far suggests otherwise.

Mikel Arteta shares what Viktor Gyokeres is "already" doing at Arsenal

In an interview with Sky Sports, Arteta lavished praise on his new centre-forward.

The tactician revealed what Gyokeres has “already” been doing in his first few weeks behind-the-scenes at Arsenal – explaining the one thing that makes the Scandinavian so special.

Gyokeres bagged an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances during his time at Sporting, helping Rui Borges’ side to their first domestic double in around 20 years last season, and Arteta will be praying for similar heroics at the Emirates.

Aldridge five-for, Banton 84* lay strong Somerset foundation

Somerset 187 for 4 (Banton 84*, Abell 52) lead Worcestershire 154 (Roderick 58, Aldridge 5-36) by 33 runsSomerset allrounder Kasey Aldridge claimed five wickets in a dramatic Worcestershire batting collapse on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division One match at Taunton. From an encouraging 102 for 1, the visitors were skittled for just 154 after losing the toss, tall seamer Aldridge taking 5 for 36 from eight overs and Craig Overton finishing with 3 for 24. Gareth Roderick top-scored with 58, while fellow opener Jake Libby made 30 and Matthew Waite 32 not out.In reply, Somerset stumbled to 39 for 3 before closing on 187 for four, Tom Banton and Tom Abell having shared a century fourth-wicket stand. Abell contributed 52 and Banton an unbeaten 84, off 103 balls, with 17 fours. The toss was staged under overcast skies. But by the time play started the sun was shining and Somerset’s bowlers struggled to make inroads as Roderick and Libby played with assurance. They put together an attractive half-century stand with few alarms, forcing home skipper Lewis Gregory to introduce Jack Leach from the River End. It was the England left-arm spinner who made an important breakthrough with the total on 70.Libby pushed forward to a ball that straightened from around the wicket and edged to slip where Gregory took a smart low catch. Kashif Ali got off the mark in streaky fashion, miscuing a shot off Leach over cover for two, but Roderick looked untroubled in moving to a composed fifty with a square cut boundary off Aldridge. The hundred was brought up in the 26th over and Worcestershire looked to be laying the foundations for a big score. But everything changed when Aldridge bowled Kashif with a ball that hurried through and clipped the top of leg stump.Three balls later Ethan Brookes edged a catch to Overton at second slip and when former Somerset player Adam Hose was bowled by the inspired Aldridge for 4, lunch was taken with Worcestershire suddenly 110 for 4.The procession continued after the interval, with Roderick, having faced 98 balls and hit eight fours, fending a ball from Aldridge to second slip where Overton accepted a routine chance. It was 130 for 6 when Brett D’Oliveira was bowled by Aldridge shouldering arms and 151 for 7 when Tom Taylor was pinned lbw by Overton pushing forward.Waite had batted positively, with three early boundaries and six in all, but was left stranded as Worcestershire could fashion only three more runs. Ben Allison was bowled by Overton on the back foot, Tom Hinley edged the same bowler to second slip and Adam Finch fell leg before to Gregory to end the innings.Only 45.3 overs had been bowled and the last nine wickets had fallen in just 18 for the addition of 52 runs.Somerset were soon in trouble themselves. Archie Vaughan, watched from the boundary edge by father Michael, the former England captain, had made only 12 when nicking Taylor to wicketkeeper Roderick and Tom Lammonby, on 8, edged a loose drive off the same bowler to second slip.Sean Dickson was bowled for 11 aiming a forcing shot to leg off Finch and at tea the hosts had work to do at 53 for 3, still 101 behind. But an evening session played in warm sunshine saw Banton and Abell build a confident partnership that put Somerset firmly in control.Banton, who has worked hard to transfer his impressive one-day batting skills to red-ball cricket, was first to a half-century, off 64 balls, with 11 fours. Abell soon followed with his seventh boundary, having faced 73 deliveries. The pair had added 101 crucial runs, but immediately after reaching fifty Abell fell to a straightforward catch, working a ball from Finch off his hip straight to Taylor at midwicket.Banton went on to delight home fans in a first-day crowd of over 2000 with more meaty boundaries as he and James Rew (17 not out) cemented Somerset’s position.

'Not good enough!' – Furious Erling Haaland tears into Man City for dropping off in draw with Monaco as he appears to agree with controversial penalty decision – unlike his team-mates

Erling Haaland was livid with Manchester City for failing to see off Monaco as Pep Guardiola's side had to make do with a 2-2 draw in the second game of their Champions League campaign. Haaland had twice given City the lead in Monaco but a wonder strike from Jordan Teze and a late penalty from former Tottenham ace Eric Dier snatched a point for the hosts.

GettyHaaland passes Henry and equals Salah with deadly double

City's Norwegian goal machine continued where he had left off on the weekend with his two goals against Burnley, netting twice in the first half in Monaco to score his 51st and 52nd goals in the Champions League. Haaland prodded home a delicious pass from Josko Gvardiol to score with his first touch of the game and move past Thierry Henry as the 11th top scorer in the competition's history. Before the end of the first half he had drawn level with Mohamed Salah in 10th. Haaland's brilliant brace was not enough for City to take all three points, however.

AdvertisementHaaland curses City's lack of killer instinct

The striker could not hide his frustration at City's failure to win a match they had dominated for large parts and he claimed they took their foot off the pedal in the second half, giving Monaco an invitation back into the match. "Of course, I don't feel good," he told . "We didn't win. We did something unnecessarily in the second half, and I don't think played good enough, so we didn't deserve to win. We needed more energy. We needed to get at them more. As we did in the first hour, we dominated much more, and now in the second half, they took the lead much more, and I don't think it's good enough."

City players and staff were incensed at the decision to award a late penalty to Monaco for Nico Gonzalez's high foot on Dier. Two members of the coaching staff were shown red cards and a furious Monaco staff member could be heard saying "Show respect" to the visiting bench. Haaland, however, had no complaints with the decision. The striker said: "I didn't see it again, but I don't know… if you kick someone in the face, I guess that's a penalty."

City collapse brings back bad memories from last season

Guardiola's side's failure to see out the game was reminiscent of their struggles in last season's Champions League. City blew a three-goal lead to draw at home to Feyenoord while they lost 4-1 at Sporting CP after scoring first and also surrendered a two-goal advantage to lose 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain. The capitulations meant that City had to win their final League Phase game to scramble a spot in the knockout play-offs, where they were destroyed 6-3 on aggregate by Real Madrid.

Dream Eze alternative: Spurs enter negotiations for £43m "future legend"

Tottenham Hotspur have a huge campaign ahead of them in 2025/26 – needing to right the wrongs of the previous year, but also build on their remarkable achievements.

The Lilywhites finished in a measly 17th place in the Premier League last time around, but managed to end their trophy drought – claiming Europa League glory over Manchester United back in May.

However, it wasn’t enough for Ange Postecoglou to keep his job, subsequently seeing Thomas Frank take the reins and be the man responsible for any revival and or future success.

Undoubtedly, the Dane will have wanted to make his additions to the side, already landing Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha from West Ham United and Bayern Munich, respectively.

There’s no denying that further work needs to be done this summer to aid the new manager’s hunt for top-flight success – but the side are rapidly running out of time, with just over a week left in the summer window.

Spurs’ hunt for a new attacking midfielder this summer

Over the last couple of days, Spurs have been in direct contact with Serie A side Como over a potential deal to land 20-year-old Nico Paz before the window slams shut.

It’s been reported that the Italian outfit are currently demanding a fee in the region of £60m for the youngster, who registered 14 combined goals and assists in 2024/25.

However, he’s not the only number ten in their sights at present, leading to rumours over a potential late move to secure the signature of PSG star Kang-in Lee.

It’s been reported by Duncan Castles that talks have been held between the clubs over a deal for the South Korean international, who’s been allowed to depart the Champions League winners this summer.

PSG's Kang-in Lee lifts the Super Cup.

He also stated that Luis Enrique’s side are currently demanding a fee in the region of €50m (£43m) for the 24-year-old, who made 45 appearances across all competitions last campaign.

Whilst he remains a viable target for Frank’s side this summer, a deal could’ve easily been wrapped up for another player now, had owner Daniel Levy stepped up a move for a previous target.

Why Spurs’ £43m target is the dream Eze alternative

After previously missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White, Eberechi Eze became Spurs’ number one target for the attacking midfielder department this summer.

At one stage, it seemed as though a deal appeared to be a formality, after the Lilywhites entered advanced talks with Crystal Palace – even agreeing a fee with the Eagles for his signature.

However, in the last couple of days, a deal has evaporated in front of their very eyes, as North London rivals Arsenal swooped in late on and all but completing a deal for the 27-year-old.

Such a deal has led to questions being asked about the owner, especially after it’s the second time in one window a deal has failed to be completed despite agreements being made in principle.

Whilst disappointment is still being felt by the Lilywhites, Levy has the chance to make amends by finalising a move for Lee in the next couple of days.

The midfielder may be available for transfer this summer, but it’s not reflecting of his quality, with the South Korean producing numerous impressive figures in Ligue 1 last campaign.

When comparing such numbers with those of Eze, he managed to better him in key areas, arguably being the best alternative to the Englishman after missing out on his signature.

Lee, who’s been labelled a “future legend” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, achieved a better goal and assist rate per 90, whilst posting a higher shot on target accuracy rate – arguably offering Frank’s side a more clinical option in front of goal.

However, his ability to create chances for his teammates also shone through last season – possessing arguably the most important asset for an attacking midfielder in abundance.
