Guardiola now wants Man City to sign "fantastic" £69m star to replace Silva

Manchester City are looking to make their mark once the January transfer window rolls around, and Pep Guardiola now has his eyes set on a statement signing.

Manchester City icon Bernardo Silva wanted by Benfica

Few players in Manchester City’s history could lay claim to the trophy haul or talent that Bernardo Silva has at his disposal. However, the Portugal international is at the centre of an intriguing storm involving his former club Benfica.

With the Primeira Liga giants set for their presidential elections next month, high-profile candidate Noronha Lopes has confirmed that there is a ‘contract waiting’ for the 31-year-old to sign should he win be installed at Estadio Da Luz.

Bernardo Silva.

“Yes, I confirm that there is a contract waiting for Bernardo Silva. And I really want to bring him already in January. He personifies everything I want for Benfica: identity, a winning culture, and he is a great Benfiquista. And I can guarantee you that we will not stop here.”

Enjoying a magnificent nine-year spell at the Premier League heavyweights, Silva has notched an impressive 72 goals and 73 assists in 410 appearances, though he may well be set for a new challenge if reports are to be believed.

Regardless, Manchester City have Real Madrid star Rodrygo on their list of potential January reinforcements, emphasising that Guardiola is determined to alter his forward line.

Now, the Citizens could be set to step up their search for a replacement should Silva call time on his heroics at the Etihad, per recent developments.

Manchester City want to sign Fermin Lopez in January

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City boss Guardiola has a personal wish to sign Barcelona star Fermin Lopez if Silva does take up the option to return to Lisbon during the January window.

Citing his ability to feature either in central midfield or as a left winger, Guardiola is a big fan of the Spain international, who has produced a return of 11 goals and 19 assists in 90 appearances for the reigning La Liga champions.

Labelled “fantastic” by national boss Luis de la Fuente, Lopez is said to be valued at around the £69 million mark and was previously targeted by Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, the fact that his contract runs until 2029 at Barcelona could be a source of frustration for Manchester City, who are likely to make a decision on their financial outlook regarding a deal nearer the time. He even shares the same CAA Stellar agency as five Etihad stars, including summer signings James Trafford and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Even with the window closed, the Citizens are already plotting some serious moves, and it will be intriguing to see whether they can pull off such an exciting capture.

Portugal player ratings vs Hungary: Record-breaker Cristiano Ronaldo bags brace, but Dominik Szoboszlai late show denies Seleccao from World Cup qualification

Portugal failed to wrap up 2026 World Cup qualification after conceding a late Hungary equaliser to draw 2-2 in Lisbon. Roberto Martinez's side had initially come from behind to get in front, courtesy of two Cristiano Ronaldo goals that set a new all-time World Cup qualifying record, and were on the brink of booking their ticket to North America thanks to Armenia's defeat to Ireland providing the extra nudge required. But Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai intervened at the death and it means Ronaldo and co. must now wait until November for their next chance instead.

Portugal knew that only a win could seal qualification on Tuesday, but while Ronaldo fired a shot over in the first few minutes, they got off to the worst possible start when Attila Szalai gave Hungary an early lead as goalkeeper Diogo Costa flapped at Szoboszlai's whipped in-swinging corner and Szalai headed in at the far post.

Ronaldo soon had Portugal's first shot on target when striking from distance, before equalising from close-range midway through the first half. That was his 40th goal in World Cup qualifying, a new all-time record surpassing the previous tally of 39 held by Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz. Both sides continued to miss the target or see efforts blocked, until Costa saved from Roland Sallai towards the end of the first half. But Ronaldo ensured Portugal took a lead into the break with another close-range finish, coming in first-half stoppage time after Nuno Mendes crossed into the box.

Portugal hit the post twice in quick succession within 15 minutes of the restart, Ruben Dias thwacking the woodwork from distance and then Bruno Fernandes also hitting the upright via the slightest of touches from Hungary goalkeeper Balasz Toth. As pressure built, he saved again from substitute Joao Felix in outstanding fashion.

It was a slender lead, though, and Szalai almost equalised from another set-piece, heading against the bar. Hungary continued to attack into the final stages and eventually got their reward through Szoboszlai, finishing at the far post after Portugal failed to deal with a low cross into the box.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Diogo Costa (6/10):

Should have done better in the moment Hungary went ahead early on. Needed to be more commanding of his six-yard box. Later showcased his superior skills as a shot-stopper.

    Nelson Semedo (7/10):

Made the Portugal equaliser with some excellent play down the right and a precise cutback for his captain to tap in.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

Almost netted the best goal he'll ever score in his career, but his long-range strike cannoned off the post instead of rippling the net. Had to cut out the ball across the box that gave Hungary their last-ditch equaliser.

    Renato Veiga (5/10):

Left Chelsea after a matter of months because he wanted to play consistently as a centre-back. This was his first start for Portugal since June but he might need to do more to earn himself the position consistently.

    Nuno Mendes (8/10):

The best left-back in the world? It was his sumptuous first-time cross that gave Ronaldo his second to put Portugal ahead. Solid defensively.

    Midfield

    Ruben Neves (7/10):

Controlled things from his deep-lying position, which helped Portugal find a foothold and move towards a dominant display after conceding from an early set-piece.

    Vitinha (7/10):

Deserves credit for the 'pre-assist' for Ronaldo's first goal, splitting the Hungary defence with a pass that played in Semedo.

    Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Created a number of chances that never quite materialised into anything proper. Withdrawn just over an hour in, which will probably please Manchester United.

    Attack

    Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Had plenty of the ball and used it well enough to create chances that weren't taken.

    Cristiano Ronaldo (9/10):

Still completely irrepressible, even pushing 41 years of age. By half-time, Portugal had registered three shots on target, all were him, and he'd scored twice. The fact that both were 'easy' chances from close-range is irrelevant.

    Pedro Neto (7/10):

Looked a threat with quick feet in wide areas and was involved in the go-ahead goal specifically. Drew several fouls and also tested Toth himself shortly before coming off.

    Subs & Manager

    Joao Felix (6/10):

Almost made an instant impact, but for a top save. Peaked in that moment.

    Joao Palhinha (6/10):

Like for like swap for Neves and continued that role to decent effect.

    Francisco Conceicao (6/10):

Had a shot that narrowly missed, but his threat was consistent enough.

    Nuno Tavares (4/10):

Was a serious downgrade when Mendes went off. Too easily allowed Lukacs the space to cross for the tying goal.

    Goncalo Ramos (N/A):

Touched the ball four times in 12 minutes.

    Roberto Martinez (5/10):

Encouraging his adventurous full-backs to go with their natural instincts proved decisive. Might need to reconsider the second-half changes he makes in future.

Tom Taylor stars once more as Worcestershire scent first win of season

Worcestershire’s seam bowlers produced their best performance of the season to blow away Essex’s batters and put them in complete control on Day Two at Visit Worcestershire New RoadIn a clinical bowling display, wickets were shared amongst the pace bowlers, with Tom Taylor’s 15-over spell of 3 for 23 the standout performance.Robin Das top scored with resilient 44, but when he was dismissed by Matthew Waite, Essex were up against it, and were eventually bundled out for 157.The home side navigated the final session to reach 58 for 5 at the close and put themselves firmly in the driving seat heading into Day Three. After wrapping up the Worcestershire innings with just four added to the overnight score, Essex were immediately pegged in reply back as Ben Allison castled his brother, Charlie, without a run being scored.Skipper Tom Westley could only make six before he was caught behind off Taylor, as the Worcestershire opening bowlers enjoyed early success in idyllic bowling conditions.Dean Elgar and Das dug in, until the former South African opener succumbed to a sensational catch by Ethan Brookes, who at third slip, dived low to his left and held onto a blinding one-handed take to reduce the visitors to 46 for 3 as lunch approached. In a similar vein to the day one, the ball continued to dominate the bat for large parts of the morning session, with Taylor proving the most frugal of Worcestershire’s bowlers.Das continued to graft hard, rallying for his side with a watchful innings, latching onto any rare loose deliveries.Matt Critchley then departed for 15, when he edged a rising ball behind into the gloves of Gareth Roderick, leaving Essex 75 for 4 and up against it.The off-side fielders were kept busy in the early exchanges of the afternoon, with the ball unable to puncture in the infield, as Waite, Taylor and Singh bowled in tandem to build pressure and restrict their opponents scoring.Michael Pepper became Taylor’s third wicket of the innings when he fell cheaply and was followed soon after by Das (44), when Waite found his outside edge.Essex brought up their 100 in the 43rd over of the day, but by this point were in the face of a home side’s bowling entourage on top of their game and pressing hard for their seventh wicket and beyond.Brookes then joined the action to break the 19-run partnership for the seventh-wicket, before Singh was rewarded for a controlled spell, giving keeper Roderick his fourth catch of the day behind the stumps as Snater exited with his side still 211 runs adrift.Thain was bowled and Porter caught behind three balls later, both off the bowling of Waite, bringing an end to an underwhelming batting display that totalled just 157.The Chelmsford-based side showed signs of a fightback when they removed Roderick and Nicholls in quick succession, before Libby was given out LBW for 10 late on.Simon Harmer dealt the home side a late double-blow when he trapped both Kashif Ali (31) and Ben Allison (0), but Rob Jones and Yadvinder Singh, batted through safely to stumps, with a 259 run lead and five wickets intact.

Arsenal intensify interest in signing "special" gem ahead of Liverpool

In a fresh battle between Premier League clubs, Arsenal have now reportedly intensified their interest in signing a teenage sensation ahead of the likes of Liverpool.

Arteta: Arsenal need to "respect" Saka's recovery

Arsenal couldn’t have entered the international break in more frustrating fashion, but they’ve come out the other side in fine fettle. Having suffered late defeat at Anfield and lost both Bukayo Saka and William Saliba to injury, the Gunners bounced back after the break with a convincing and near flawless win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Losing Saka was a particular blow however, and one that the Gunners will still need to deal with moving forwards, relying on the likes of Noni Madueke to continue to shine. Mikel Arteta provided an update on the fitness of his star man before Forest, stating that Arsenal must “respect” the recovery process and not rush Saka back before he is ready.

The Spaniard also provided an update on Kai Havertz, who suffered an injury blow in the early stages of the season: “He’s looking really good, he’s walking freely.

“He’s starting to load the knee and to do some bits. As I said before, I think we’re taking it from weeks to months. But knowing Kai, I cannot give you any time scale because I know what he’s going to try to do, same with Gabi Jesus. So I think he’s in a good moment.”

It’s these types of injury concerns that Arsenal have been building for, however, and the transfer market remains the key to a lot of their success. Get things right in that department and they may yet end their wait for another league title.

To that end, those in North London are already thinking about the future. According to reports, they’ve even gone as far as intensifying their interest in signing a teenage sensation.

Arsenal intensify interest in Mokio

As reported by TeamTalk, Arsenal have now intensified their interest in signing Jorthy Mokio from Ajax. The Gunners are joined in the race to sign the 17-year-old talent by Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, but will be looking to deal their rivals a transfer blow by securing his signature at the first opportunity.

The third-youngest goalscorer in Ajax history, there’s no denying that Mokio is one to watch. The teenage midfielder, who can also play centre-back, was dubbed “special” by scout Jacek Kulig in February and it’s hard to argue with that statement.

Not Gyokeres: £60m Arsenal man could be a better signing than Wirtz & Isak

After Liverpool spent big on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, an “Intelligent” Arsenal signing could prove to be the Premier League’s best recruit.

'I get angry at illogical mistakes' – Referee chief defends decision to suspend two officials after controversial penalty calls in Napoli win against Inter

Italian refereeing chief Gianluca Rocchi has defended his decision to suspend Maurizio Mariani and Daniele Bindoni following the chaotic clash between Napoli and Inter that saw a controversial penalty reshape the game. Rocchi was left angry at the mistakes made by the referee and his assistant, branding the episode a procedural failure.

Napoli-Inter match derailed by controversy

The Serie A clash between Napoli and Inter turned into one of Serie A’s most contentious nights of the season so far. A dubious first-half penalty awarded to Napoli after Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s light contact on Giovanni Di Lorenzo shifted the game’s momentum. Initially unsure, referee Mariani was urged by assistant Bindoni to award the spot-kick eight seconds after the incident. VAR operator Valerio Marini upheld the call despite minimal contact, and Kevin De Bruyne converted to give Napoli the lead. Inter’s furious protests grew louder after the officials later ignored a handball by Alessandro Buongiorno. The match ended 3-1 to Napoli, but the focus afterwards was firmly on officiating errors rather than the football.

The two referee's were suspended by the Italian refereeing chief Rocchi as he backed his decision claiming that the poor choices made by the on-field officials were illogical and needs to be punished to keep it in check with the broader aspect of the game.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportRocchi suspends referee for 'illogical mistakes'

The fallout was swift and public. Serie A’s referee designator Gianluca Rocchi, visibly angered, confirmed the suspension of Mariani, Bindoni, and VAR official Marini.

"There are mistakes and mistakes. We don't intend to suspend anyone, but I get angry when mistakes are illogical because they go against what we agreed upon. If you overdo it, if you let your self-esteem get the better of you, it's not good. We have to focus on the good of the clubs, on the result, and not on ourselves. In those cases, I get angry and suspend someone," Rocchi said in an interview with

The Italian referee was further irked by the decision of the two on-field referees but among the two he believes the assistant referee's adamant stance on it being a clear penalty is something Rocchi can't entertain.

"This episode is very peculiar and involves a procedural issue. The referee may not have seen it, of course, but I must say that we wanted to introduce the assistants to a process so that they can become little referees. What I didn't like at all was the assistant's interference, but they have to intervene in very clear matters in their area of responsibility, and that's not the case here. It's not a penalty; we would have expected an on-field review.

"The fact that there was contact has nothing to do with it; the 'we must not intervene' is not something we want to hear. In this case, I assign a lot of responsibility to the assistant, then to the match director, and then also to the VAR: I've put them on a scale. We have to be very interventionist on penalties that are of a high standard, and this one is below the threshold. I repeat, the procedure is not normal: if this penalty was seen by Mariani, we would have accepted it more, that's it."

The blunders cost the officiating trio their Serie A duties. Reports described Rocchi as “furious” over “too serious errors” that influenced the match’s outcome. Bindoni was immediately stood down, facing possible demotion to Serie B, while Marini was moved off top-flight VAR duties.

The wider fallout of refereeing errors

Rocchi’s criticism didn’t stop with the match between the Scudetto candidates. He dissected a string of contentious calls across Serie A, each revealing a different flaw in refereeing judgment. In Lazio's clash against Juventus, he confirmed Mario Gila’s foul on Francisco Conceicao was a clear penalty but reminded officials that not all contacts are punishable – “if a player lands on another’s foot in a natural motion, it’s dynamic, not a foul.”

Rocchi was further questioned about Rafael Leao's controversial opening goal for AC Milan in the 2-2 draw against Pisa last week. The controversy around the goal mainly relates to offside and refereeing interpretations that were scrutinised after the game. In response to which, the Serie A referee designator said: "It's a borderline decision, but from now on we'll focus on offside: the closer you are, the more impact it has on the goalkeeper: in this case, he's straddling the six-yard box and has an impact. [Zachary] Athekame's goal, on the other hand, is more correct. In short, distance makes the difference; in this case, [Malick] Fofana is further away inside the box. In short, the closer the offside player gets to the goalkeeper, the more punishable he will be."

Mariani, who made the first-half error in the Napoli vs Inter clash, was suspended from officiating midweek fixtures but could return as early as the following weekend. Bindoni received a longer suspension, expected to keep him out until the end of November due to his significant role in pushing the incorrect decision. This disciplinary action serves as a strong message emphasising accountability and the need for referees to avoid illogical mistakes that contradict agreed protocols.

Freya Kemp stamps mark as Hampshire hold off Somerset

Niamh Holland hits career-best 60 from 53 but home side fall short to continue winless run

Freya Kemp smacked an unbeaten 65•Getty Images

Freya Kemp registered a superb unbeaten half-century as Hampshire carved out a hard-fought five-run victory over Somerset at the Cooper Associates Ground to return to winning ways in the Vitality Blast T20 women’s competition.Hampshire elected to bat on a sound Taunton track and internationals Maia Bouchier and Charli Knott staged an enterprising opening partnership of 80 in 9.1 overs, scoring 43 apiece as bat dominated ball. Kemp then built upon solid foundations, raising a forthright 65 not out from 38 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes to propel the visitors to 169 for 6.Required to score at 8.5 an over, Somerset were bolstered by Niamh Holland’s superb career-best T20 innings of 60 from 53 balls. She struck six fours and two sixes, shared in stands of 52 and 63 with Sophie Luff and Amanda-Jade Wellington for the third and fourth wickets respectively and helped set up a tense finale.Wellington hit 44 from 25 balls to make a game of it, but the Australian was out in the final over and Somerset, looking for their first win of the Blast campaign, came up just short at 164 for 6. Linsey Smith was the pick of the Hampshire bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 26 from four overs.Hampshire won the toss, elected to bat and made a flying start, Bouchier and Knott accruing nine boundaries between them in raising a quickfire 51 from the six-over powerplay. Adept at finding the gaps, these two scored freely either side of the wicket to heap pressure upon the Somerset bowlers and force a series of errors in the field.Somerset skipper Luff deployed six different bowlers in the first nine overs in a bid to break the partnership and the home side breathed a collective sigh of relief when England batter Bouchier, having rushed to 43 from 26 balls with eight fours, fluffed her lines and skied a delivery from Wellington to long-on, where Chloe Skelton took an athletic catch.Making her final appearance before returning to Australia, overseas star Knott surrendered her wicket in almost identical fashion, attempting to hit Charlie Dean’s offspin over the top and succeeding only in finding Wellington at long-on with the score 90 for 2.Offspinner Skelton and seamer Mollie Robbins applied pressure through the middle overs, but Somerset were unable to contain Kemp, who proved effective in hitting the spinners down the ground. The partnership for the third wicket between Kemp and the experienced Georgia Adams gathered pace, the latter successfully adopting a supporting role as the more aggressive Kemp went through the gears.Adams had contributed 10 runs to a stand of 49 in 36 balls when she danced down the pitch to Dean and holed out to long-off in the 17th. Dean then pouched a return catch to send back Rhianna Southby without scoring next ball, Wellington ran out Abi Norgrove for 1 and Luff threw down the stumps to remove Mary Taylor as the visitors subsided to 152 for 6 in the face of a belated Somerset fightback.Unperturbed by chaotic events at the other end, Kemp went to an assured 50 from 33 balls, the left hander almost single-handedly lifting Hampshire to a competitive total.Somerset’s reply was undermined by confusion, Bex Odgers failing to respond when called through by Holland and being run out in the very first over. Fran Wilson then top-edged a Lauren Bell delivery to deep third and departed for 4 as the home side lurched to 19 for 2 in the fourth. It might have been worse for Somerset had Bouchier not dropped Holland on 15 at long-on off the bowling of Mary Taylor. The England Under-19 allrounder made good her escape to stage a restorative partnership with Luff, the third-wicket pair adopting a high-risk strategy in raising 52 from 34 balls to partially redress the balance. Hampshire kept their cool under pressure and Smith persuaded Luff to hit to extra cover for 23, at which point the home side were 71 for 3, requiring a further 99 at 10 an over.Holland did her best to keep Somerset in contention, going to a 39-ball half century in style, pulling Taylor over midwicket for six and then driving the next ball straight down the ground for four to bring an appreciative audience to their feet. Promoted up the order, Wellington provided valuable support as the fourth wicket pair advanced the score to 115 for 3 at the end of the 15th.Smith finally accounted for Holland in the 18th, pinning her lbw in the act of reverse sweeping as Somerset slipped to 134 for 4. The home side’s hopes rested with Wellington thereafter, but she was run out in the final over as Hampshire held their nerve.

Allen's 51-ball 151 consigns Freedom to 123-run defeat in MLC 2025 opener

Allen, who hit 19 sixes, led San Francisco Unicorns to 269 for 5, which was 123 too many for defending champions Washington Freedom

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jun-2025For a little while in Washington Freedom’s chase against San Francisco Unicorns in the MLC 2025 opener, it looked like we might be in for something special. As it turned out, all the special stuff was already done in the first half by Finn Allen, whose record-breaking 51-ball 151 powered Unicorns to 269 for 5, and despite a promising start, scoreboard pressure told on Freedom, who eventually went down by a massive 123 runs.Freedom, the defending champions, got what they wanted after they won the toss and opted to field, Jack Edwards getting rid of Tim Seifert and Jake Fraser-McGurk falling to Saurabh Netravalkar inside the powerplay. But Allen was already looking ominous, and the six-over phase ended with Unicorns on a solid 67 for 2.Related

Stats – Finn Allen shatters records with 34-ball hundred in MLC

The real mayhem, though, came in the middle overs. The seventh over, bowled by Mitchell Owen, went for just four runs, but Sanjay Krishnamurthi, Finn’s partner, set the agenda in the next, taking Rachin Ravindra for 24 runs – with four consecutive sixes. Allen then hit Owen for three sixes in the next over, which went for 21, and was followed by 12, 20, 12, 12 and 22 in the next five, as Unicorns got to 194 for 3 after 14. At that stage, with Allen past his century – he got there off 34 balls – even 300 wasn’t out of the question.Allen didn’t let up, and reached his 150 off just 50 balls on the last ball of the 17th over, but the scoring rate had fallen – only in comparison, of course – a little bit by then, and Allen’s dismissal for 151 off the first ball of the 18th meant Unicorns would need a new star to keep them going.Hassan Khan was that man. He hit three fours and three sixes in an 18-ball 38 not out, and though not 300, Unicorns’ 269 was still a huge score, studded with records: no one has hit more sixes in a T20 innings than Allen’s 19, no one has scored 150 in a T20 quicker than Allen, no one has scored more runs in an MLC match than Allen, among other records.Hassan Khan scored quick runs at the death before picking up three wickets•Sportzpics for MLCOwen and Ravindra were quick off the blocks for Freedom in their chase. In fact, where Unicorns got 67 for 2 in the powerplay, Freedom had 89 for 1. The wicket of Ravindra, though, appeared to hurt the momentum, since he was going faster than Owen at that stage. The flourish at the start had come from Owen, who was on 36 from 13 by the end of the third over. But Ravindra then got going, hitting Xavier Bartlett for four sixes off the first four balls in a 25-run over. But he was dismissed by Liam Plunkett in the sixth, and Owen went in the seventh, and then it was steadily downhill for Freedom.Edwards, the No. 3, and Ben Sears, the No. 10, were the only others to get into double figures as Freedom hurtled towards the inevitable, folding for 146 in 13.1 overs. Haris Rauf and Hassan picked up three wickets each for Unicorns, while Carmi le Roux got two.Unicorns next play on Saturday afternoon local time, against Los Angeles Knight Riders, while Freedom are in action later the same day, against Seattle Orcas.
