Three things Man United must to do beat Leicester

It’s Manchester United against Leicester City this weekend as the Red Devils look to get their faltering title challenge back on track.

The Old Trafford club have lost three of their last four games in all competitions, a win against Northampton Town the only shining light in a rather dreary looking last couple of weeks.

Plenty of criticism has been fired at United and Jose Mourinho as only a club the size of the Red Devils would attract and whilst some has been warranted some has been over the top.

Things are far from dreadful at the club despite this blip and if they can beat the Foxes on Saturday lunch time this will be forgotten quickly.

Even so, they still have to win. Luckily for them, here at Football FanCast we think they just need to follow these three things to take victory. Simple….

Play Paul Pogba further forward

If you’ve seen any of the Frenchman’s performances it’s pretty obvious to note that he clearly can’t play in the role Jose Mourinho has asked him to so far. He needs to play further forward where his attacking ability can come into play properly whilst also allowing Marouane Fellaini and someone else to defend in the two holding roles. Where this leaves Wayne Rooney is up for debate but more than likely on the bench.

Avoid the counter

Leicester won the title on the counter attack last year and whilst it would be crude to suggest that’s all they had, it was a lot of their game plan. United need stop the Foxes from breaking out early as for all their big names, they really do lack pace and if Jamie Vardy et al. can stand the United defence up and get running at them it could be curtains for the men in red.

Start quickly

Old Trafford should be a pretty loud place come Saturday lunch time, but if the Red Devils don’t get going quickly that could soon fizzle out and Leicester will grow in confidence. United’s fans need to be reassured that what’s gone on over the last fortnight is nothing but a brief blip, but without getting them out of their seats early in this game, it could make for a pretty dull affair.

Does captaincy mean anything in modern football?

We love to fascinate over the importance of a captain. We analyse teams’ records with and without their regular armband wearer, we debate endlessly over who should lead a team out. But, does it mean anything? The honour behind captaining a side is evident for many players. A small elasticated arm band is purely symbolic, of course, but it is seen as a token of both respect and an individual achievement for the player. Reaching a standard in a club, or nation, where you can stride out at the front of the team and lead the side is clearly emotive for many.In this sense, captaincy is inherently personal. It is about how that makes the captain themselves feel, although it is impossible to quantify the impact on their performances. In this manner, perhaps, it is egocentric. As a concept it is about ‘leading’ a team, a collaboration of football-playing individuals, but the underlying premise that it is about the honour of it suggests a deeper, individualistic motivation. There are blurred lines between leadership and captaincy. Leadership does not need captaincy and, increasingly so, captaincy does not need leadership. Occasional quips to the press, calming waters with the officials and wandering out with a mascot each week, captains of top level football teams are akin to a head of state rather than the leader of a medieval army.

Leaders do not need an armband. Patrick Vieira was no less of a leader when Tony Adams was captain, nor was Patrice Evra any less of a leader when Nemanja Vidic wore the armband for Manchester United. Football teams need more than one on-field leader, the captaincy is a necessary, but trivial aside.

Unlike other sports, football’s captains do not make decisions to influence a game.

If captaincy did have any real permutations to a team’s performance, we would never see players allowed to wear the armband when they were retiring or reaching a landmark. The role has always been inflated, but, as it decreases further, the greater the insignificance of each debate becomes. Give anyone the armband, it will not stop the natural leaders in a squad.

Captaincy is not a negative, though. It is clearly influential to some people, but the continued overblown importance of the position is distracting from the more pertinent conversations we should be having about the game, whether that be affairs on or off the field.

Three reasons Son Heung-min can help fire Spurs to the title

Perhaps one of the stories of the season so far has been the form of Spurs forward Son Heung-min, who has really shown why he deserves to be a part of this current Tottenham set-up.

But it’s a rise to the top that has been somewhat surprising after he struggled to break into the first-team last season.

With Harry Kane out through injury and Vincent Jansson apparently not ready to take a starting role in the side, it’s fallen to other players in the squad to take on the goalscoring responsibilities.

And the man at the front of the Spurs line has been Son Heung-min, who has been in fantastic form in recent weeks. Spurs sit second in the league very much due to his form and going forward, they’ll hope he can maintain his high standards.

Five goals in six appearances has been great and we think he could be the man to push Spurs to the summit come the end of the season.

So with that in mind, here are three reasons why Son Heung-min can help fire Spurs to this season’s Premier League title.

He tore through Manchester City…

Manchester City have been tipped as the early favourites to capture the Premier League title and until they played Spurs, you could see why. Triumph over Manchester United had given them a good start but stood in their way last weekend were Spurs, and Son Heung-min.

The Korean international, who has been operating as a lone striker in recent weeks, caused countless problems for City’s hapless defenders.

John Stones and Pablo Zabaleta were the main culprits, being caught out time after time by Son’s pace. He gave them a real lesson and you’ve got to worry for some of the lesser teams going forward.

No Kane? No problem

With Harry Kane sidelined until early November, some completely ruled Spurs out when the England striker became injured last month.

But in his absence, Spurs really haven’t struggled one bit, mainly because of Son Heung-min’s form. He’s shown everything that had made Harry Kane into such a star and there is no reason why Son can’t keep the Englishman out of the side when he returns.

To be able to step up in such a way is a real credit and Spurs fans must be grinning from ear-to-ear.

He links up with the young Lions perfectly

Perhaps one of the clearest things we saw in the win over Manchester City was how well Son linked up with some of Spurs’ best young English talent.

Walker, Rose and Alli all played off the Korean with aplomb and everything they did well went through the Korean. It’s seriously promising stuff for Spurs, especially with a potential title push now seriously in the equation.

Five things we learned from Liverpool’s thrashing of Watford

Liverpool ran riot at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s men thrashed Watford 6-1 to go top of the table – the first time the club has been that position since the German become manager having left Borussia Dortmund.

The Red’s put in the performance of genuine title contenders as they wiped the floor with a Hornets side who had been in a fine run of form themselves.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring just past the 25 minute mark, before Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can made it three before half time.

Firmino made it 4-0, Mane again made it five, however Watford struck back in a consolation through Daryl Janmaat with 15 minute to go.

Substitute Georginio Wijnaldum became the Red’s fifth scorer of the day as he came off the bench to complete the rout.

The scintillating attacking display was typical of Liverpool’s performances so far this season, and they don’t look like stopping anytime soon. Top of the table, Jurgen Klopp and his men are flying high.

Here are five things we learned from today’s game…

Goal crazy

In 11 Premier League games so far this season, Liverpool have found the net four or more times on five occasions, which makes them this campaign’s highest scorers with a huge 30 goals already.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool look free when attacking and full to the brim of confidence. At the moment, the Reds aren’t just beating times, they are dismantling them.

Who needs a striker?

For all the goals scored, it is odd to think that Liverpool don’t possess – or at least play very often – an out-and-out striker.

Firmino, Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge (when used) all look interchangeable across the front line, making the Reds unpredictable and versatile more so than any other Premier League team at the moment. How can defenders man-mark when the forwards have no set position?

Watford have had a brilliant start to the season under Walter Mazzari, but were humbled today at Anfield by a brilliant Liverpool side. If the Hornets were down the wrong end of the table, it would be a sign for worry, however considering they sit nice and cosy in the top half, it shouldn’t be a cause for too much for concern.

While 6-1 may be embarrassing, it in no way should put a dent in what otherwise has been a good start to the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp looks happy. The Liverpool players look happy. The fans look happy.

It is difficult to not become to optimistic, but as things stand everyone associated with the Merseyside club looks happy as larry – otherwise known as the Klopp effect. The charismatic German has transformed the club from pessimist to optimist in his short spell and that is finally translating onto the field.

Away days

Like I said, Watford have had a brilliant start to their season.

However, maybe that should be rephrased to, Watford have had a brilliant start to the season – at home. Away has been a different story. Besides the 6-1 defeat today,  a 2-0 defeat to Burnley and a draw 0-0 with struggling Swansea have dampened an exciting start to the season. Away days are something Walter Mazzari will need to work on.

Conte and Guardiola have already changed the League

The Premier League is a changing landscape. Having fallen away from the pinnacle of European football in recent years, it is awakening with the force of galactic investment and several of the world’s best managers. Recovering to perhaps even greater than its former glories, the top of the English game is now an altogether more cultured environment: actually a place of tactical nuances and intelligent footballers, these days.

This weekend, we will be fortunate enough to see two of the very best go head to head at the Etihad Stadium. The endlessly flexible Pep Guardiola hosts the system-first Antonio Conte with two points separating Manchester City and Chelsea at the top of the table. It’s the sort of fixture that can easily slumber into a low-scoring game, without the sort of excitement that it is so often billed.

Even if this is not a repeat of Swansea and Crystal Palace’s encounter last weekend, this match will be intriguing. A battle of intensity from both sides, with each manager demanding his side work harder out of possession than they do with the ball. We may expect Manchester City to dominate possession, but we do not expect a one-sided match. Guardiola tends to adapt his shape to the opposition often, enabling his side to dominate the ball. How will he attack Chelsea’s back three? Will he play an extra central midfielder to swamp N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic?

The intricacies of this match will be as fascinating as the dramatic moments. Tactically it will be a duel between two of the best, with fully-rested squads who have had a sufficient period of time to understand the ways of their respective managers. The scene is perfectly set, it will be a game of unrivalled intensity this season – or so you’d like to think. Both will aim to build through their defence, both will quickly stamp on any poor passes and touches from the opposition’s central defenders; there are indicators this could even become a stalemate.

Stalemate is not a word often associated with Guardiola, nor does anyone look capable of stopping the force of nature that this Chelsea team currently represents. For all the quality that will be on show on Saturday, this will be a match of energy both on and off the pitch. We can be sure that Sky will spend half the time showing us the reactions of the managers, who live through their team, bouncing around on the touchline like a child who’s just drunk two litres of Coke.

Intensity is an overused word, but it is most fitting for these two characters. Often becalmed in interviews, we can be sure that intensity will be demanded from Guardiola and Conte before this game. It really does have mouth-watering potential, English football has a lot to thank Conte and Guardiola for already.

For all the darkness around world football at the moment, this fixture makes you remember why we all love the sport. Why we pay a fortune to tune in, why we get so impassioned for some blokes kicking a ball around – its not all bad in the Premier League. This game, thanks to the two managers, will be a breath of fresh air to any football lover.

The Leeds United XI to claim all three points vs Aston Villa

Leeds United will look to extend their winning run in the Championship to four matches when they face another in-form side in Aston Villa at Villa Park on Thursday night.

Following their disappointing 2-0 defeat against fellow high-flyers Brighton earlier this month, Garry Monk’s men have tasted success in three games on the bounce including their comprehensive 4-1 victory against Preston North End at Deepdale on Boxing Day, which included four different goalscorers for the visitors – Kemar Roofe, Hadi Sacko, Souleymane Doukara and Pablo Hernandez.

The Whites are fifth – eight points behind second-placed Newcastle United and two points ahead of seventh-placed Derby County – but they face a tough task in picking up all three points again when they make the trip south to face Villa, who are unbeaten at Villa Park this term.

Football FanCast pick the Leeds XI that will make it four consecutive wins vs Steve Bruce’s side…

After keeping two clean sheets in his last three Championship matches, Green is showing why he is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the division.

The former England international is one of the main reasons Leeds are holding their own in the play-off places, and he was unlucky not to pick up a third successive shutout against Preston when Marnick Vermijl’s 20-yard strike flew past him in his side’s 4-1 victory.

The right-back has been part of a largely consistent Leeds back four this season, and he has deservedly established himself in Garry Monk’s first choice backline.

While he offers a threat going forward, Ayling also brings a real quality with his defensive abilities. He will potentially have to keep a close eye on Leandro Bacuna, who scored a bullet header from the left-hand side in Aston Villa’s win against Burton on Boxing Day.

The Swede’s partnership with Kyle Bartley has been one of the main reasons Leeds United have been so solid defensively this season, helping the side concede just once in their last three matches as they continue to cement their spot in the Championship play-off positions.

As well as his contribution at the back, Jansson is also a threat at the other end of the pitch, as he showed when his goal-bound header was turned into the net by teammate Kemar Roofe.

Alongside Jansson at the heart of the Leeds defence, Bartley has proven that he is one of the best centre-backs in the Championship this season. The Swansea loanee has been one of the keys to Leeds keeping out the goals.

As well as his dominance at the back, the former Arsenal man has been heavily involved in the club’s last two matches – scoring a last-minute winner in the 1-0 win against Brentford, before Jermaine Beckford was sent off for kicking out at him in the 4-1 success at Preston on Boxing Day.

After limping off during the 1-0 win against Brentford at Elland Road with an Achilles injury, Taylor was left out of the squad altogether for the win at Preston with Domenico Berardi filling in at left-back.

However, the highly-rated left-sided player is expected to be fit again for the trip to Aston Villa, and with the threat of Albert Adomah to deal with, Garry Monk will want his first choice No.3 back in the team at Villa Park.

DM: Liam Bridcutt

After missing the majority of the season because of a foot injury, Leeds’ captain is fighting fit and really starting to make an impression in the middle of the park for the Championship high-flyers.

Providing protection to Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson behind him, the side has looked even more solid than usual in recent weeks, which has also allowed their forward players to flourish – as was shown in the 4-1 thrashing of Preston on Boxing Day.

The youngster had a spell alongside 18-year-old Ronaldo Vieira in the centre of the park earlier in the campaign, but following the return of skipper Bridcutt, it is Phillips that has maintained his place in midfield.

Alongside his captain, the 21-year-old has thrived during Leeds’ recent run of impressive results and he will look to help his side continue their winning run when they travel to face Aston Villa on Thursday.

The winger has been one of Leeds’ main attacking threats during their recent winning run and he scored a brilliant goal in the 4-1 win against Preston on Boxing Day.

Despite finding the net, Sacko was substituted just after half-time with the introduction of Pablo Hernandez helping the side defensively. But Garry Monk should use Sacko’s pace to counter-attack against an Aston Villa side that will surely look to go forward from the off at home.

After failing to score in his first 22 appearances for the club following his £3m move from Oxford United in the summer, Roofe has certainly gained confidence following his first goal in the reverse fixture against Aston Villa at the start of the month.

The attacking midfielder scored one and assisted one in the 4-1 win against Preston on Boxing Day, and Garry Monk will be hoping that he can be as influential for the trip to Villa Park.

Following the injury to Chris Wood which saw Souleymane Doukara move to the striker’s position, it is Dallas that has filled in on the left-hand side – and he has impressed.

After being part of an attacking performance that saw Leeds score four times in the comprehensive win against Preston, the Northern Ireland winger should get another start at Villa Park.

Even though Leeds’ top goalscorer Chris Wood came on and got an assist in the 4-1 against Preston following a spell on the sidelines with injury, Doukara deserves another chance up top at Villa Park.

The 25-year-old scored a brilliant solo goal at Deepdale and his all-round play helped Garry Monk’s men create a number of goalscoring chances – he could cause Villa’s central defensive partnership of James Chester and Nathan Baker real problems on Thursday.

Klopp must sign a centre-back in January following Sunderland slump

Liverpool twice gave up the lead to draw 2-2 with a lowly Sunderland on Monday, giving Chelsea the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points should they beat Spurs on Wednesday.

After dominating possession and having 21 shots on goal, the Reds should have cruised to victory at the Stadium of Light, but two errors in defence meant that Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe scored twice from the penalty spot to deny the visitors.

Jurgen Klopp would have been furious with the mistakes that led to the penalties, with Sadio Mane’s late handball adding to Ragnar Klavan’s clumsy tackle on Didier Ndong in the first-half.

It isn’t the first time that the Merseyside outfit have come under fire defensively, and Klopp may well be considering his options this month.

Here are THREE ways Liverpool showed against Sunderland that they must bring in a new centre-back during the January transfer window…

Klavan isn’t up to it

The summer signing struggled to get first-team minutes in the Liverpool side prior to the last couple of weeks, with midfielder Lucas even preferred to the Estonian when Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren were missing.

While he has helped the side pick up clean sheets against Middlesbrough, Everton and Manchester City – although, admittedly, he had little to do during the 1-0 success over the latter – it was his clumsy challenge on Ndong on Monday that gave Defoe the chance to level following Sturridge’s opener.

The 31-year-old certainly didn’t look like a title-winning centre-back when he made that tackle, and it could be mistakes like that that cost the Reds dearly.

They can’t rely on injury-hit Matip

Another summer signing – this time from Schalke – Matip impressed Liverpool fans with his performances at the back as he brought some pace and intelligence in possession to the Reds’ rearguard.

However, a recurring ankle problem has seen him miss ten matches already this term, and if Jurgen Klopp’s side are to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title, they need a settled centre-back partnership like the leaders Chelsea have had in recent months – Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and David Luiz have been a constant in defence during the Blues 13-match winning run.

The Cameroon international has turned down the opportunity to play at the Africa Cup of Nations to focus on his Liverpool career, and it could be a positive as he needs to shake off this injury once and for all.

Lovren is good, but he isn’t a leader

There were times last season when Dejan Lovren was widely criticised by Liverpool’s supporters for his poor performances at the back, but the Croatian has shown he is capable this term as the Reds look to mount a Premier League title challenge.

While he has improved significantly, he doesn’t seem to have that strong leadership you feel the likes of Chelsea’s Gary Cahill bring to the backline, and he could be a much-improved player if he had a more dominant centre-half alongside him. Over to you, Mr. Klopp.

Liverpool could provide much-needed boost by tying down Coutinho

Liverpool have opened talks with Philippe Coutinho and his camp regarding a new contract, according to The Telegraph.

What’s the story?

Over the past couple of seasons, Coutinho has emerged as a star player for the Reds, arguably the best in the team.

Last season, the Brazilian scored eight Premier League goals and provided five assists in 26 appearances, while in this campaign he netted five and made five before an ankle injury halted his progress.

Coutinho’s ability to influence a game has reportedly caught the attention of Spanish giants Barcelona and Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain.

However, The Telegraph reports that Liverpool will try to warn off interest from any potential suitors, as they began discussions with Coutinho regarding fresh terms this week.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Merseyside outfit from Inter Milan in 2013, has three years left on his current deal.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

If Coutinho signs, is he really committing?

In October, the playmaker’s agent Kia Joorabchian was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying that his client was “extremely happy” at Liverpool.

If he puts pen to paper on a new deal, it would provide a much-needed boost for Liverpool considering that there has been limited activity in the January transfer window.

On the pitch, it has also been disappointing for Jurgen Klopp and his men, as they have won just one of their last six games in all competitions.

If Coutinho commits his future to Liverpool it shows a sign of intent, although one could draw comparisons to Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan penned a new deal in December 2013 and then joined Barcelona seven months later.

Of course, the circumstances were different – Suarez had a long-running feud with the British media and he tried to orchestrate a Liverpool exit the season before.

The news about Coutinho possibly signing a new deal should be taken for what it is – a huge boost for Liverpool.

However, it is worth keeping in mind that contracts do not necessarily signal long-term commitment.

Three things that point to a Man United upset vs. Wigan

Wigan face an almighty task when they visit Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Latics travel to one of the form sides in the Premier League and one that is enjoying life again under new manager Jose Mourinho. Old Trafford has become a fortress to be feared again.

Still, the FA Cup is for believing and that belief will make sure that fear isn’t a so much of an issue when Warren Joyce’s men make the short trip across to Manchester.

Wigan are struggling in the Championship but have nothing to lose when they face Mourinho’s men and that could be liberating experience for the Latics. How often have we seen teams struggling for league form produce a bit of magic in the cup?

Manchester United will rightly be confident of progressing to the Fifth Round but there are opportunities for Wigan success on Sunday. Can they do the unthinkable and take a draw, or a win, home with them?

Here are THREE things that could be a sign Wigan will make dreams reality this weekend…

Goalscoring Latics

Will Grigg may not be on fire this season but Wigan’s recent form is actually very good. They’re on a three-game winning run this January and have scored two goals in each of those matches. That’s goalscoring potential that must give them hope of sticking away at least one chance at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Grigg has struggled for goals this term but he did produce some FA Cup magic in the last round, netting in a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. The latter was just his seventh goal in all competitions but shows that there’s life in the striker on his day.

Last season’s 27-goal man will know that a trip to Manchester United represents a brilliant chance for him to hit the headlines again.

Joyce knows Man United better than most

Warren Joyce knows Manchester United better than most opposition managers the Red Devils will face this season.

Joyce was part of the Old Trafford furniture before becoming Wigan boss, in charge of overseeing young United stars transitioning into the first-team as Reserve boss.

Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford have all been guided by the Latics gaffer over the years and he’ll have the inside scoop on how to counter their abilities should they play on Sunday.

That’s an invaluable insight on some of United’s potential match-winners and if Joyce can successfully stop some of their big stars performing then Wigan might be able to just sneak a result.

Wigan fans will be hoping that knowledge will give their side the edge they need.

Wigan love a Cup run

Wigan have produced an almighty FA Cup shock in recent years, famously lifting the trophy at Manchester City’s expense at Wembley in 2013.

The next year they went far in the competition, too, reaching another Wembley tie in the semi-final before being knocked out by Arsenal cruelly on penalties.

That recent history should be an inspiration for the Latics, despite going out early in the competition in the two seasons prior this.

This is the first time they’ve reached the Fourth Round since those Wembley memories and their fans will be dreaming of another incredible cup run.

Can they turn those dreams into reality on Sunday?

Three Arsenal youngsters Wenger must use vs. Sutton

Sutton United will take part in what is perhaps the club’s biggest ever fixture on Monday night as they welcome Arsenal to Gander Green Lane in the FA Cup Fifth Round.

The National League side remain the lowest ranked team still in the historic competition, having knocked out Championship outfit Leeds United in dramatic fashion in the previous round and Ipswich Town before that.

However, if Sutton’s recent form is to give any indication as to the likely outcome of the Monday night fixture, it doesn’t look like it will be another fairytale FA Cup story for the hosts. Paul Doswell’s side have lost their last three league fixtures on the bounce, conceding ten goals in the process, which is not exactly the ideal warm-up for welcoming a side who currently reside in fourth place in the Premier League.

Arsenal fans were rubbing their hands at the draw having avoided all of the bigger clubs in the competition, and with Arsene Wenger’s side now all but out of the title race and the Champions League, a third FA Cup title in four years could rescue another poor campaign.

It is unlikely that the Gunners will field a full strength side for a tough away day in south London, so a few of their younger players could be given the nod.

Here are THREE Arsenal starlets we think should start at Sutton…

Rob Holding

Signed from Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee during the summer, opportunities for the man dubbed the ‘new Gary Cahill’ have been few and far between since his switch to the Emirates.

After making his debut in the thrilling 4-3 loss to Liverpool right at the start of the season, Holding has since made two further starts and a handful of appearances from the bench. While he has looked solid, the lack of game time has left Arsenal fans undecided as to whether he will be a part of the club’s long-term future, and although a start against Sutton United will do little to nothing to help that cause, getting minutes under his belt is vital and will only improve his confidence.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Arsenal fans were thrilled with young Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ performance against Preston in the Third Round of the competition where he started in the unusual position of right-back.

The Gunners left it late, and while the youngster may have looked a little shaky at the start of the game, he really grew into the role and excelled when getting forward and crossing the ball into the box. Having impressed so much, a start for the Englishman this time round seems inevitable, however, it could be that he moves further up the pitch into a more attacking role.

Chris Willock

Willock has caused quite a stir at the Emirates since making his professional debut in the League Cup against Nottingham Forest back in September, and he has been described as a man who has the potential to be the next jewel in the Gunners’ crown, with him having impressed so greatly at youth level.

The speedy winger, who is adept with both feet, drives dangerously at defenders and can cause all sorts of problems with his trickery and quick feet. At only 19, and of a slight build, it is understandable that he has been protected so far, however, it is only a matter of time before more first-team opportunities comes.
