Liverpool: Alisson is proving to be the signing of the season

When Liverpool signed Alisson for a then world-record fee for a goalkeeper, not many would have expected the Brazilian to be this good.

The 26-year-old summer signing has been one of the best shot-stoppers in the league this season a defied the odds by living up to the reported £66 million price tag Liverpool shelled out to Roma for his services, and on Sunday Alisson again proved his worth with a clean sheet against Chelsea as the Reds sealed their first win against the Blues in over five years.

The Brazilian number one is now two clean sheets away from breaking Liverpool’s record number of shutouts in a Premier League season, which is held by former keeper Pepe Reina with 20 in the 2005/06 campaign, and if the Reds are to go on to win the league title for the first time in nearly 30 years, Alisson will have a good case for signing of the season.

Alisson has single handily turned one of Liverpool’s weakest positions on the pitch for the past few seasons into one of their strongest and has had as big as an effect on Liverpool’s defensive as Virgil van Dijk, and whilst the Dutch defender wins all the plaudits from critics and neutral fans, it’s the former Roma goalkeeper that the fans are praising for their lack of conceding goals.

Sure, he has had a few mistakes at the start of his time on Merseyside, but very few goalkeepers can make a move to a new league with a new language with new teammates and not expect them to make one or two errors, and yet Alisson has overcome these problems.

Alisson was seen as an overpriced purchase when he was signed in the summer, but now with the end of the season fast approaching, it’s easy to see that the Brazilian keeper has been worth every penny for the Reds.

Liverpool fans, how important has Alisson been this season? Let us know!

Barnsley: Stendel must avoid selling Alex Mowatt in the summer

How exciting has race for automatic promotion in League One been this season?

Last night’s victory for Sunderland at Accrington Stanley saw the gap between them and second-placed Barnsley narrow to three points with Portsmouth also firmly in contention.

The Tykes’ 2-2 draw against Coventry City last Saturday may prove to be a vital error in their hopes of securing an immediate return to the Championship next season, especially when you consider that their closest competitors still have games in hand over the Yorkshire-based outfit.

Regardless of whether they secure promotion in May, it has become clear that Daniel Stendel must resist any temptation to sell Alex Mowatt in the summer.

The midfielder has featured in every single of Barnsley’s league games this season with his exceptional level of consistency earning him a place in the EFL League One team of the year alongside Cameron McGeehan, Adam Davies and Ethan Pinnock.

With five goals and five assists to his name, Mowatt has been extremely influential for the Tykes and could still embark on a run of form that leads them to a top-two finish. The former Leeds man clearly has the ability to play at a higher level than the third tier and so it is incredibly important that Barnsley do all that they can to keep him at Oakwell next season.

After signing a contract extension with the club last November to extend his stay to at least 2020 (via the BBC), it is clear that he is happy at the Tykes but interest from elsewhere could still turn his head, especially if Stendel’s side miss out on promotion.

What do you think Barnsley fans? How important is Mowett to your side? Should Stendel all that he can to avoid resisting any temptation for the midfielder in the summer? Let us know below.

Liverpool would make a big statement by signing Marco Asensio

Will it finally be the year for Liverpool? Fans are eagerly hoping that Jurgen Klopp’s men have the ability to go all the way and win the Premier League this season as they continue to battle with Manchester City.

To have closed the gap from 25 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side from last season is some achievement on its own but to eclipse their total this season would show such progress.

Liverpool, during many windows gone by, have obviously struggled to find the right players for their team and although some haven’t been as good as hoped this season, the defensive improvements particularly has been largely how the Reds have become a better all-round team.

So, if they want to continue growing as a side, winning the league this season or not, they need to improve their attack – yes you read that right.

Because for all the goals Klopp’s side are capable of scoring, they still lack a Philippe Coutinho-esque type of player and that’s something they hope will change.

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio certainly fits that calibre of player and would be a top addition despite not enduring the best campaign this year. Asensio, (who is valued at £72 million on Transfermarkt) is a playmaker that would without a doubt make a huge difference to the way in which Liverpool play, which could be of benefit to Klopp’s side.

Indeed, he’s previously been touted with a move to Merseyside by Marca via the Daily Mirror and would be a huge statement of intent.

And, to add to the hype surrounding the attacking midfielder, he was once described as being ‘spectacular’ by former Barcelona star David Villa (as per Daily Mail), so it’s clear to see that he’s highly-rated.

The 23-year-old certainly boasts tremendous ability but yet has only started 14 times in La Liga this season, despite helping win the Champions League against the Reds little over a year ago now. With six goals and five assists in total, it shows that when given the chance, Asensio is a player that can be relied upon in-front of goal and setting up team-mates as well.

Carlos Corberan is Leeds United’s best chance at future success

Leeds United are in capable hands if Marcelo Bielsa understudy Carlos Corberan leads the club in years to come.

To take a spot in the school of one of the most influential managers in the modern era, at least by Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino’s reckoning, is no easy feat – but Corberan has managed it. And deservedly so.

Carlos Corberan may only be 35-years-old but a career at the top level of coaching has been a long time coming with 12 years of experience to his name, and if his recent success with the under-23s is anything to go by (via Leeds-Live) then he is going to be quite the leader.

A Valencia academy player who never made it past the third tier of Spanish football, the Spaniard admitted he always saw his future outside of the playing realm. “I finished my career pretty fast,” he told Yorkshire Evening Post, “and I was 23 when I started to feel like my future would be more in coaching than as a player.”

Corberan was blooded at Villareal in 2006 when Spanish football was undergoing a major transition thanks to the ‘tiki-taka’ master Pep Guardiola. Both the Spanish national team, who enjoyed serious success in the ensuing years, and Villareal adapted their models, to match that of the former Barcelona man. He admits that this cataclysmic shakeup shaped his educational experience and coaching style: “From this moment there was a link between Guardiola and the Spanish national team and the style of Villarreal was in the same direction. It gave me new ideas about how you can train teams and what the best methodology is to have one style of play. It’s something that goes inside of you. It changes your mind and changes your feelings towards football.”

Indeed, to experience a change first-hand and to study one posthumously is a completely different experience. You get a tangible feel for it; the subtle shifts and differences that are often overlooked by scribes and commentators; the feedback from players who are adapting their game; the ways a coach can successfully harness the new style and things you must avoid for the future.

Interestingly, it is widely considered that Guardiola’s football is an extension of Bielsa’s (Yorkshire Evening Post) – and Corberan is tapping straight into that well of knowledge as we speak.

If the Spaniard is the man to inherit the Leeds United job, then he is certainly qualified enough to do it – at least in theory, anyhow.

Leeds United fans, do you think Carlos Corberan is the man for the job? Let us know in the comments below…

The forgotten man: West Ham fans react to update on Hugill future

[ad_pod ]According to Claret & Hugh, Jordan Hugill will be sent back to parent club West Ham United this summer as Middlesbrough have no intention of signing him permanently.Hugill – a 2018 arrival at West Ham – joined Boro on loan last summer. The 26-year-old has scored seven times in all competitions for the Riverside outfit this season, but according to Claret & Hugh, Boro boss Tony Pulis does not want to sign the Englishman on a permanent contract. The 6 foot frontman, who played over 100 times for Preston North End, made just three appearances for the Hammers in the second half of last season. It is difficult to imagine that there will be a first-team spot for the striker next term, but it remains to be seen what happens.Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals what Lasagne-Gate was really like for Tottenham’s food-poisoned stars – Check out the video below…For now, the West Ham fans have been on social media reacting to the update on Hugill’s future and a selection of their responses can be seen below:

Portsmouth: Pompey must take EFL Trophy heroics into the final games of the season

Not many people look back at the EFL Trophy as a highlight in the English football calendar, but they certainly will this year.

Portsmouth’s dramatic win against Sunderland at Wembley will go down in not only Pompey history but as one of the most exciting games of the 2018/19 season.

On a day where Liverpool left it late against Spurs to keep their hunt for a first Premier League trophy going and where Chelsea controversially beat Cardiff, it was a game against two League One teams that everyone was talking about, and for Pompey to come out the other side the victors is a big statement.

Oliver Hawkins made it Portsmouth’s day with the final penalty kick of the shootout, but now the real challenge begins for Kenny Jackett’s side as they must take the positivity and passion from the EFL Trophy win into the remaining game of the season.

As much as it is nice to have silverware this season, the ultimate goal is promotion back into the Championship, and now Pompey have the belief they need to go all the way and climb back into a division many of their fans believe they should be at.

Beating a side as big as Sunderland, who too are also looking for promotion back into the Championship, gives Portsmouth an advantage heading into the final month of the League One season, and Pompey has to be ready to give the same passion and fight they gave at Wembley in their last seven league games.

The sides face each other again on the 27th of April, and it is likely whoever walks away from that game the winner will be the team to claim the third and final automatic promotion spot to the Championship.

Portsmouth have the upper hand going into the biggest games of their season, and the team must keep a level head if they are to reach the goal they set out at the start of the season.

Portsmouth fans, where will Pompey finish in the League One table? Let us know!

Felix Nmecha needs to have a big future at Manchester City

How many big signings will it be this summer, then? Manchester City are well-known for being extremely active in the transfer market in recent seasons and this summer is likely to be no different. Surely, with a potential transfer ban looming, the club need to stock up.

With Sky Blues still (just) in with a chance of securing the quadruple this season, it’s hard to argue that they need any more players but with Pep Guardiola being a perfectionist, he wants his side to become even better. Indeed, the club clearly need to keep improving if they want to extend this era of dominance.

For fans, that will only bring more excitement over the summer period – due to the insatiable nature of the proverbial silly season – but what if the Cityzens could save themselves some money this summer by offering a chance to some more youth players?

It is not uncommon for Pep Guardiola to turn to his youngsters as he has many times this season, of which one of those who was blessed with a chance was Felix Nmecha.

Felix Nmecha made his first-team debut against Burton in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup this season and for 23 minutes, offering an insight to how creative and useful he could be for Manchester City.

The 18-year-old, brother to striker Lucas who is on-loan Preston, has been influential for the U23 side this side, having helped himself to six goals and three assists from midfield. At their worst this season, City have lacked reliable goals from the engine room with Kevin De Bruyne struggling with injury and David Silva moving deeper, so affording the Hamburg-born midfielder a chance would be a good move.

Being a tall yet composed figure, Nmecha effortlessly operates around the pitch and uses his ability to create chances for himself and his team-mates. He looks every inch a Guardiola player at his best and, while he’s certainly facing some big name competition, the time must come to give him a chance.

Embedded into City youngsters is the ability to pass and Felix Nmecha definitely has a solid range he can deploy. Playing alongside some top-class players, it’s time to see whether his potential can be transformed into something great.

At least during pre-season, a chance should be given to Felix Nmecha to show what he is capable of, which could transpire to be a brilliant choice for Man City.

Do you agree Nmecha should get a chance in the first-team? If not, why not? Let us know!

Unsung hero: Liverpool fans think Gini Wijnaldum is underrated

[ad_pod ]Liverpool fans on Twitter have been busy discussing just how underrated Gini Wijnaldum is, and how unnoticed his work in the middle of the park goes at times.Wijnaldum arrived on Merseyside in a £25m deal from Newcastle as one of Jurgen Klopp’s first signings, and has gone from strength to strength under the German boss. Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…The Dutch international has been one of the Reds’ standout performers this season, quietly going about his work in midfield with some tidy passing, vital reading of the play and the odd goal or two.Whilst his performances were going somewhat unnoticed, the 28-year-old’s efforts have slowly become more recognised over the course of the campaign as Klopp’s side enter April still in the title race as well as the Champions League.

However, the overall feeling is that the former PSV Eindhoven star is extremely underrated, with his significance in making the side tick and perform to its best vital to Klopp…
