Time To Slow Down? Sky Sports Legend Thinks So

With the EFL discussing ending the current tv blackout of 3pm kick offs, I wonder how long it will take for the Premier League to also start looking at tv options and the constant fixture changes?

With the world at a standstill not long back, with lockdowns and restrictions to attending live games, the football world illustrated perfectly it was able to screen all games to keep us football fans happy and connected to our clubs.

I think there are those amongst us now, who would prefer to slow down, and watch some of the games at the more traditional Saturday 3pm instead of scrambling around for all the different kick off times.  As Simon Jordan said   in his TalkSport show , ‘Live is live’ and those who enjoy getting to the game, will still do exactly that.  But for those that have responded to the slow down during the pandemic, surely it is time for sport to look again as to how people consume the game and how best to cater for it?

Fans of Sky Sports Soccer Saturday will no doubt be aware that, after 25 years presenting the show, Jeff Stelling is stepping down at the end of the season and he has partnered with Abbot Ale to introduce a new pint drinking concept to British pub culture.

Football is amongst the top ten activities we like to do, when not working – and with the UK being amongst the worst in Europe for long working hours, it does look like there is an appetite for having a re-think over work to life priorities.

Abbot Ale revealed that Brits expect to be able to slow down at the age of 43 – after living a ‘fast paced’ life for 25 years.  They questioned 2000 people and almost half agreed the slower pace during lockdown was enjoyable.

That is why Abbot Ale is on a mission to get the nation to slow down and savour.

Jeff Stelling is set to spread the slow down message, explaining;

“As I get a little older, I am trying to slow down! Life is still so frantic but I want to enjoy pleasures like a dog walk, a round of golf or especially a good pint! I say cheers to those who have the option of slowing down that bit sooner than me!”

And after 25 years fronting Soccer Saturday, no one can disagree that Jeff deserves some time to slow down and chill.

TOP 10 ACTIVITIES BRITS DO – WHEN THEY SLOW DOWN:

  1. Go for a walk
  2. Enjoy nature
  3. Read a book
  4. Listen to music
  5. Going for a meal
  6. Do some gardening
  7. Cook something nice
  8. Have a beer or wine
  9. Watch sport
  10. Going to the pub

And some work together very nicely don’t they?  I like to walk to a pub, have a pint, a meal, watch the football, then walk home….!

Newcastle linked with Yerry Mina

Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Everton centre-back Yerry Mina in January, with the defender reportedly available for £17m.

What’s the story?

The Magpies are likely to invest in January after the completion of their Saudi-backed takeover and will be looking for reinforcements to help push their survival bid.

Eddie Howe’s side are currently 19th in the Premier League, having won just one of their 15 top-flight games this term. However, that win came in their most recent match against Burnley and they will look to make themselves a more attractive proposition over the coming weeks before the transfer window opens.

They certainly need additions in the defensive department, conceding 30 league goals already this term, the third-highest tally in the top flight, and a swoop for Mina could be shrewd business.

According to a report from Jeunes Footeux, the Toffees will allow the defender to leave Goodison Park in January should their €20m (£17m) asking price be met. Mina is also entering the final 18 months of his contract, meaning that an imminent sale would be preferred by the Merseyside club.

The Colombian has been limited to just seven league appearances under Rafael Benitez so far this season, although an ongoing thigh problem has been a major reason for his absence. Mina returned to action on Monday night in Everton’s 2-1 win over Arsenal after two months out of the team, although the 27-year-old only managed 31 minutes as he had to be withdrawn.

According to SofaScore, the £120k-p/w defender has averaged a 78% pass accuracy and 3.4 clearances per game this season, compared to the 66% pass accuracy and 3.7 clearances per game of Fabian Schär.

It appears that Mina is certainly popular with many associated with Everton, in particular teammate Richarlison, who claimed that the Colombian is the club’s “best defender”. Furthermore, former Everton defender Michael Ball claimed earlier this season that “when he’s fit, he’s a monster.”

The 27-year-old has shown that he poses a threat in the air, frequently netting with headers and winning at least 2.7 aerial duels per game in every season since moving to Merseyside. Such traits are reminiscent of former Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini, who was renowned for being ‘strong in the air’ during his time on Tyneside.

With Transfermarkt currently valuing Mina at £18m, it could prove a sensible deal for the Magpies if PIF can land a new version of former Magpies and Argentina defender Coloccini. At 6 foot 5, the Colombian is certainly a physical presence and would come to St James’ Park with plenty of Premier League experience, having made 73 appearances in the English top flight.

Tough times will help Ishant improve – Srinath

Ishant Sharma’s struggles in limited-overs cricket in the last year are part of his growth as a cricketer, says former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath. Ishant has impressed in Tests but struggled with his lengths in ODIs and has been average recently in that format on the slow pitches in India, West Indies and Sri Lanka.”These tough times are the best for him to learn about himself, about his bowling craft and develop,” Srinath told Cricinfo.Ishant averaged 31.48 and picked up 27 wickets in his first 20 ODIs. In 13 games in 2009, he has picked up 19 wickets at 31.42. The economy rate, though, has shot up from 5.34 to 6.19. On Sunday, in a ICC Champions Trophy warm-up game, he leaked 49 runs off seven overs and picked up a wicket. There is a school of thought that Ishant should be given adequate breaks from ODIs to allow him to concentrate on Tests so that India don’t risk losing a potent strike force in the longer version of the game. However, Srinath doesn’t share that view.”This is part and parcel of the development of a bowler. The second season is always going to be tougher for a cricketer. He has the basics right and he will go on to become a very good bowler for India. These tough times are the best for him to learn about himself, about his bowling craft and develop. From what I hear, he has a great attitude to learn and if he remains hungry, he will come out a better ODI bowler and as a result, a better bowler overall.”Srinath, however, is worried about the effects of too much criticism on such a young bowler. “It all depends on his attitude I guess but too much criticism can hurt. This is a very crucial stage. At this developmental stage, you can only develop the more you bowl and more you learn about yourself.”There are concerns that Ishant, who has a fragile body and not a smooth post-release routine where he almost stumbles a bit, can get injured with playing too many ODIs but Srinath believes that’s a risk that he has to take at this stage. “That’s the risk that you have to weigh against the results and only he can know about his body.”TA Sekhar, who ran the MRF Pace Academy with Dennis Lillee, shared the same view. “His strength is the pace and the bounce he gets from length and back of a length. That is his USP. I see no reason, for example, why should he cut down pace just to bowl a fuller length as some people have been suggesting.”What’s the use of him bowling like [Glenn] McGrath? People say cut down pace, concentrate on lengths … No way. I am sure he is in good hands with Venkatesh Prasad (the India bowling coach) who would get the best out of him. Obviously, Ishant has to tinker with a few things like lengths but he doesn’t have to change anything drastically. He is just 19-20. This is the time to play more and improve. He has what we call the fast-twitch muscles. The body will grow stronger and importantly, he will be much the wiser for going through this phase.”

Knee injuries force Butcher to retire

Mark Butcher, the Surrey club captain, has announced his retirement because of a persistent knee injury.Although Butcher has managed five Championship matches this season he had further surgery two weeks ago with the hope of returning before the end of the current campaign. However, he has now conceded defeat to his long-standing problem and ends a 19-year professional career. He has been with Surrey throughout and his retirement brought to an end a great family playing tradition at The Oval. Mark followed his father, Alan, into the team and they joined forces as captain and coach before Alan left following relegation last season.”It was a very tough decision to walk away from the club that I have called home since I was a boy and the game that has given me so many great memories,” Butcher said. “But I feel that it is the right time to move onto the next chapter in my life.”I look back very fondly on my twenty years as a player at Surrey, in my opinion the best place to play cricket in the land, and am also very proud to have represented my country. I would like to thank all the coaches, players, supporters and administrative staff that have helped me along the way and made the last twenty years incredibly special.”Butcher played 71 Tests for England, the last of which came against South Africa, in Durban, in 2004 and his career-best was the unbeaten 173 he hit against Australia, at Headingley, in 2001. He later enjoyed a period at No. 3 when he was a key part to England’s success under Duncan Fletcher and Michael Vaughan. In his first-class career Butcher amassed 17,870 runs at 40.70 with a career-best 259. He was also a very useful medium-pace bowler – until his knees started playing up – and captured 125 first-class wickets at 33.89. In one-day cricket he averaged 31.85 but never won an ODI cap for England.”I had the privilege of touring with Mark in 1999-2000 and I got to see first-hand what a fine batsman he really was,” cricket manager Chris Adams said. “I also got a glimpse of the man, and that told me that here was a talented cricketer for sure but a cricketer whose attitude and work ethic were of the highest order.”In the short time that we have had working together I would like to thank Mark for his contribution in what we are trying to achieve in this new era at Surrey . He has never once let his personal anguish and frustrations with the injury affect his decision making with regards to team affairs and has 100% endorsed the vision and journey that has only just begun.”Butcher’s is the second high-profile county retirement in recent days following Andy Caddick’s decision to halt his career at the end of the season.

West Ham now ‘seriously’ considering Ikone

According to a report by Milan Live, West Ham United have now got Lille forward Jonathan Ikone in their sights as they eye more attacking additions for manager David Moyes.

The Lowdown: West Ham in forward hunt…

Over the summer, Moyes made no secret of his desire to add more forward additions to his ranks and bolster West Ham’s chances for 2021/2022.

As he candidly admitted, the Scotsman was ‘desperate’ to sign a striker in particular and it isn’t difficult to see why when taking into account star man Michail Antonio’s concerning injury history.

The Jamaica international has started this season in sublime form; bagging six goals and three assists in just nine Premier League starts whilst also winning the English top flight’s Player of the Month award for August.

Moyes has had to manage him carefully, though, with the Hammers boss electing not to use the 31-year-old at all in the Carabao Cup for example.

He has even sent club doctors abroad to monitor Antonio when the player goes touring on international duty.

An injury to Antonio, which is always a lingering possibility, would spell disaster for West Ham and Moyes – leaving little wonder why they are currently weighing moves for new attacking additions like Andrea Belotti and Jesse Lingard.

The Latest: West Ham set sights on Ikone…

As per Milan Live, West Ham have now set their sights on another forward in Lille star Ikone who has featured in the Champions League this season.

A key player for the Ligue 1 title-winners over 2020/2021, he has been attracting attention from Serie A giants AC Milan, but as they apparently pull out of the race, the Hammers and Everton swoop in.

West Ham, alongside the Toffees, are now in contention to sign the 23-year-old and are ‘seriously considering buying the player’ for Moyes.

The Verdict: Underwhelming?

Lille apparently value their man at around €40 million (£34.2m) according to an exclusive Anfield Central, and for that price, we believe Ikone should be strongly avoided.

The summer signing of Nikola Vlasic and links to Lingard, who could leave Manchester United in January for half of Ikone’s reported price (The Sun), arguably render the Frenchman’s addition unnecessary.

Going by his numbers, he doesn’t exactly stand out as a must-have target for Moyes either.

According to WhoScored, Ikone’s averages of 1.3 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.1 completed dribbles per 90 don’t measure up to that of key West Ham first teamers.

The likes of Said Benrahma, Jarrod Bowen and Antonio have all racked up superior numbers to Ikone in terms of these attacking aspects, leaving one to wonder what he could add under Moyes.

A ‘very sought-after’ player before signing for Lille, we believe he shouldn’t be anywhere near the top of Rob Newman’s transfer wish list for January.

Chandimal and Rajapaksha shine in drawn match

Scorecard
Dinesh Chandimal and Banuka Rajapaksha scored brilliant hundreds but Sri Lanka had to be content with a draw in their opening game on the the tour of Bangladesh. Resuming on 110 for 2, both batsmen continued in strong fashion, with Rajapksha playing the aggressor. Both batsmen, however, were retired out, but not before Rajapaksha had smashed 16 boundaries and four sixes during his 130-ball innings with Chandimal hitting 16 fours during his 150-ball stay. Kushal Janith Perera’s 50 off 85 balls, comprising six boundaries, made it a day to forget for the Bangladesh U-19 bowlers as the visitors finished with a lead of 172.It was a much better showing from Bangladesh U-19 second time around as Mohammad Rubel tore into the Sri Lankan U-19 attack. He remained unbeaten on 73 off 71 balls, stroking 10 fours and two sixes en route. The two teams will face off next in the first Youth Test beginning Wednesday in Fatullah.

Farmer's son hits the big time

Phillip Hughes and Simon Katich have batted together for New South Wales and soon they will be opening for Australia © Getty Images

The whispers began three years ago. A banana farmer’s son had arrived in the big smoke and was punishing bowling attacks across Sydney grade cricket. “I’ll tell you this,” said his coach, Neil d’Costa, who had just chaperoned Michael Clarke to cricket’s grandest stage. “This kid will go all the way.”The prophecy unfolded rapidly. Runs for Western Suburbs. Runs for the New South Wales and Australia Under-19s. Runs for New South Wales and Australia A. And all this by the age of 20. Hughes was not so much a batsman as a cricketing tsunami, swamping competitions with torrents of runs and earning the reputation as Australia’s next big thing.Hughes is an intriguing subject on both sides of the boundary rope. Away from the game, he is a quietly-spoken country kid who, paradoxically, has developed a taste for high fashion, suave hairstyles and diamond earrings. On the pitch, he is a positive-scoring, free-flowing batsman, albeit with a technique that is not to everyone’s taste. But it is runs that define him as a cricketer, and runs that caught the eye of Andrew Hilditch’s selection panel. With 1570 to his name in 17 first-class games at an average of 60.38, Hughes has given Australia every reason to believe his is not a premature selection.”Watching [South Africa] on TV in Australia, they all seemed pretty good,” Hughes said. “I’d love to have a crack at all of them.”Hughes’ elevation to the Test squad was not entirely surprising – his 117 in last season’s Sheffield Shield final prompted a wave of media calls for his promotion – but it certainly sparked excitement across the Australian cricketing landscape. Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, was equally impressed with Hughes’ 151 and 82 not out in Newcastle over the past week, when he knew the spotlight was on him.”It’s probably one of the most exciting things I’ve had to do since I’ve been a selector, picking a 20-year-old player who’s scoring that volume of runs under pressure,” Hilditch said. “We probably haven’t done that since Ricky Ponting, so it’s pretty exciting.”He’s got a fairly simple technique and certain areas where he scores, he’s basically a very controlled sort of player. You probably don’t want to draw comparisons but maybe similar to Justin Langer when he started his career. He just seems to have a really good head about his shoulders.”Both Ponting and Langer spoke at length with Hughes during this week’s Allan Border medal presentation. Hughes was awarded the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year on the same evening Ponting was named joint winner of the Border medal, and the Australian captain was glowing in his praise for the man tasked with replacing Matthew Hayden at the top of the order.”It’s going to be a huge step up for him,” Ponting said. “It’s going to be a demanding tour on all the players, even us more experienced guys will find it difficult at times over there I’m sure.”Everything that he’s shown or indicated with his first-class cricket over the last couple of years would suggest that under pressure and in big moments he’s tended to stand up and do the job for New South Wales. That’s a great thing for him to have behind him already.”Hughes scored a breezy 64 in a tour match against New Zealand earlier in the summer, and on Thursday declared himself again ready to duel an international attack. “It’s all going very smoothly at the moment and I’m loving it,” he said. “I’ve batted a lot with Simon [Katich] for New South Wales now and he’s been great. It’s definitely great to bat with him and if [the opportunity] did come up [to open with him for Australia], it would be great.”
