Celtic struggling to sell Odsonne Edouard

This transfer window has been close to perfection from Ange Postecoglou and Celtic.

It means a strong contrast to last summer where excluding David Turnbull, the Hoops got the vast portion of their business in the market completely wrong.

Celtic have spent better this year, however, and their recent performances show as much.

What’s the word?

One thing Celtic have been able to do so far this summer is to keep hold of some of their more important players.

Kristoffer Ajer did get swept up by the jaws of the Premier League but Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie are still at Parkhead despite speculation surrounding their future.

Edouard came close to joining Leicester City earlier this year but a move fell through after the Foxes preferred a swoop for Patson Daka instead.

The Frenchman’s wage demands are proving to be an issue but a ten-word update courtesy of the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano spawned another problem.

He took to Twitter this weekend to say: “No bid from Crystal Palace for Edouard as of now.”

Concerning news

Keeping Edouard at Parkhead looked like the most important piece of business Celtic would do all summer when the market opened.

However, a number of circumstances now dictate that losing him wouldn’t be such a bad piece of news.

After all, fans would surely be concerned if the striker departed in a year’s time on a free transfer when they could have received upward of £15m for their star man.

Edouard remains the club’s record signing when they paid a whopping £9m for the forward back in 2018. Losing so much on a player would be disastrous for Celtic, a club that aren’t exactly swimming in cash.

His wage demands appear to be pricing him out of a move and there seems to be a huge degree of difference in how much the player rates himself compared to those who actually want to sign him.

Selling Edouard for a decent price will also have allowed Celtic to strengthen deeper throughout the squad.

Kyogo Furuhashi has already proven that his loss won’t be as bad as first feared. The Japanese forward has six goals in seven outings and looks like an outstanding capture.

The potential arrival of Giorgos Giakoumakis would surely be less likely to happen if the Frenchman doesn’t pack his bags in the coming week too.

The Greek scored 29 goals last term, a tally that Edouard has never managed to replicate. It’s worth bearing in mind that Giakoumakis found those strikes in a better division than the Premiership too.

If Postecoglou isn’t able to shift the bullish attacker in the remaining days of the window, it should come as a cause for concern. For all parties, they need to come to an agreement as soon as possible.

Spurs fans wowed as Romero signing confirmed

Flocking to Twitter, many Tottenham Hotspur fans have erupted over the official announcement of third major summer signing Cristian Romero after long talks.

Spurs have been attempting to sign the Argentine from Atalanta over these last two weeks with the Serie A side having remained stubborn in negotiations for a period.

However, news broke recently of an agreement between the clubs as Tottenham now finalise his signing and make an announcement.

Romero has joined the Lilywhites as Nuno Espirito Santo’s third major summer signing after deals for both Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil, but his arrival in particular finally puts an end to Spurs’ long, long search for a star centre-half.

Tottenham have been trying to sign a colossal defensive presence since last summer, sending Steve Hitchen out to negotiate with Inter Milan for the attempted signing of Milan Skriniar in 2020 (Alasdair Gold).

Romero, though, is arguably worth the wait given his credentials – having won the Serie A MVP award for best defender over 2020/2021.

Here’s how Spurs fans went wild for the big announcement, flocking to reply to the club’s official Twitter account.

Broad answers England omission

A round-up of the County Championship action

Cricinfo staff30-Jul-2008Stuart Broad responded to his omission from the Test at Edgbaston with three wickets for Nottinghamshire to help them dismiss Durham for 266 at Trent Bridge. He was the seventh bowler used after arriving from Birmingham, but soon struck to have Ben Harmison caught behind as the visitors struggled. Broad also removed top-scorer Will Smith, against his former club, for 85 and wrapped up the innings with the scalp of fellow England squad member Steve Harmison. Durham were once again indebted to Smith, who hit 13 boundaries in his 182-ball innings and the next-best score was Paul Wiseman’s 32 which at least lifted the total over 250. Charlie Shreck ended with the best figures of 4 for 69, which included both openers in a testing first spell. Andre Adams stood in until Broad arrived at the ground and had time to claim the vital wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with a thick inside edge into the stumps.A solid performance form the Hampshire top order put them in control against Kent at Canterbury. Michael Carberry led the way with 92 against a home side perhaps suffering a hangover from their Twenty20 Cup final defeat on Saturday. Yasir Arafat made early inroads, but the other bowlers couldn’t build on it in friendly batting conditions. Carberry and Michael Lumb added 181 before Ryan McLaren made a brace of breakthroughs to bring Kent back into the game at 208 for 4. However, Chris Benham and Nic Pothas settled into a solid stand until Arafat claimed his third to remove Benham one short of his fifty. However, 400 is still well within reach for Hampshire.Five wickets for Yorkshire’s Deon Kruis made it another familiarly miserable Championship day for Surrey and one victim Mark Ramprakash in particular whose struggles continued with 6. Stewart Walters was the top scorer with 40, while there was a brace each for Tim Bresnan and Adil Rashid. To apply some more salt, Yorkshire eased to 50 without loss by stumps at Headingley.Murray Goodwin’s century helped Sussex end on 382 for 6 after batting against Somerset at Horsham. He cut and pulled well before eventually playing on to Andy Caddick for 137 with stumps looming. Chris Adams chipped in with his second fifty of the term, while Michael Yardy also made a half-century. Charl Willoughby returned three wickets: firstly yorking Chris Nash and then finding Luke Wright’s edge but Yardy steadied with Goodwin. Yardy was caught off Caddick for 68 by Peter Trego at square leg, while Willoughby returned to claim Matt Prior who picked out Zander de Bruyn at midwicket.Chris Wright’s best first-class figures helped Essex to bowl out Glamorgan for a lowly 139 then draw level by stumps for the loss of 5 wickets. Seam bowlers and spinners alike got assistance from the wicket at Southend-on-Sea as few batsmen suggested much permanence. After Wright took consistent wickets in his first Championship match since May, Ravi Bopara hastened the end of the Glamorgan innings with 3 for 19 as his skiddy seamers accounted for the lower order. Adam Shantry was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers on his Championship debut with 3 for 40 as he removed both openers and then returned to have nightwatchman David Masters caught behind in the last over of the day. Essex had moved into a commanding position just before close when they had reached 132 for 3 but the quick dismissals of Masters and Grant Flower left Mark Pettini and the lower order plenty to do in the morning. While South Africa enjoyed a good Test day with the ball, a former international of theirs was happily carving out some fun with the bat. Lance Klusener made his 19th first-class hundred as Northamptonshire had the better of the opening day with 382 for 6 against Derbyshire at Chesterfield.. There was a half-century too for Riki Wessels, who made 79, while Robert White just missed out with 49. But late wickets will have encouraged the home side, Klusener finally falling for 135, bowled by Graham Wagg, who also picked off his countryman Nicky Boje for 4.Another South African, HD Ackerman, also helped out his side, but as wickets fell around him he remains the key, his 173 not out the bulk of Leicestershire’s 288 for 6 against Warwickshire at Grace Road. James Anyon had set them in early trouble, with the top two wickets, but Ackerman shared a half-century stand with Paul Nixon and then put on 139 for the fifth wicket with Joshua Cobb – Nixon and Cobb both ending with 35.Kabir Ali’s form with the ball continued as he picked up 6 for 94 as Worcestershire dismissed Gloucestershire for 283 at Cheltenham. Simon Jones returned to action after resting against Middlesex last week, and his 16 overs brought him a wicket for 45 runs. But the day belonged to Ali, whose haul included Hamish Marshall for a duck and Marcus North who, for the second week running, was out on 98. Imran Arif, meanwhile, nailed David Brown on 83 to end with two. Worcestershire lost Daryl Mitchell on what became the final ball of the day, Steve Kirby celebrating signing a new long-term contract with the club with his wicket.

West Brom suffer potential Yokuslu blow

West Brom have been dealt a blow in their quest to re-sign Okay Yokuslu this summer, with Crystal Palace emerging as contenders to snap him up.

The Lowdown: Yokuslu linked with West Brom

The Baggies may have been relegated from the Premier League last season, but a number of players still performed well.

Yokuslu was one of those, arriving on loan from Celta Vigo in the January transfer window and making 15 league starts, excelling at the heart of the midfield.

West Brom have been linked with bringing the 27-year-old back to the club this summer, in order to aid their Championship promotion push.

The Latest: Palace keen on signing midfielder

According to Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness], however, Palace have entered the race to sign Yokuslu, with new manager Patrick Vieira eyeing up a loan move for the Turkey international.

Celta Vigo are keen on selling the midfielder for good, but as of yet, it is claimed that no permanent bids have been made for his services.

The Verdict: Blow for Baggies

This is a potentially damaging update from a Baggies perspective, considering Palace are still in the Premier League and therefore likely representing a more appealing proposition.

It will be hard for Valerien Ismael to entice Yokuslu to the Hawthorns if he has offers from more successful clubs, meaning they may have to look elsewhere.

If West Brom did manage to get their man, however, it could feel like a significant piece of business, considering the Celta man’s performances in the top-flight last season.

In other news, some West Brom fans have been reacting to a key update on one Baggies player. Find out who it is here.

SACA seeks Local Government partnerships

The South Australian Cricket Association today launched a program called’Cricket in the Community: a Social Vision’ to create strongerpartnerships between the State’s 25,000 cricketers and local government.SACA’s State Manager of Cricket and Redbacks Coach Greg Chappelllaunched the campaign today, saying that cricket was undergoingphenomenal growth, especially at junior level.’We’ve seen the number of junior players increase by about 60% in thepast seven years. Whole new clubs and associations are being formedevery season’, Greg said.’Two things come out of that. One is that there’s increasing pressure onthe need for facilities; and the other is that cricket has a grass-rootssocial infrastructure which has the potential to be a valuable asset forlocal government.’The program we are launching today aims at strengthening theunderstanding between cricket and councils. We both have a lot to learnabout each other and we can both benefit from that understanding.’Cricket has an increasing need for facilities; and in return, we canoffer local government a way to connect with the local community.’For example, Councils are, in effect, sponsors of cricket but theyrarely celebrate that sponsorship or use it to reach the local people.’The campaign SACA is launching today will operate at two levels:

  • ‘The Association itself will take a leading role by seeking todevelop our relationship with the Local Government Association and theLocal Government Manager’s Association. We want to inform them of thefull impact of cricket, not just as a sport but as an important part ofthe social and community fabric. But we also want to learn more aboutLocal Government, so this will be a two-way process.
  • ‘At a Club level, we have prepared a strategy and an action kitfor the Grade Clubs to follow, which will assist them in building anddeveloping partnerships with Councils. This is practical and hasoutcomes which we believe will benefit both parties. SACA will giveactive support to clubs in pursuing these activities throughout thecoming season, and will formally review the outcomes after the finals.
‘Cricket has an important community and social role. Our program isaimed firstly at ensuring Councils have a full understanding of thedepth and breadth of cricket in the community. The second phase involvesworking with Councils to develop partnership arrangements which aremutually beneficial to both cricket and local government, based oncommonalities of purpose and service to the community.’Cricket is more than a great game – it’s a social and communityresource which touches hundreds of thousands of South Australians atmany different levels. Our strategy in working more closely with localgovernment on a mutual basis has the full support of the AustralianCricket Board and will help ensure a positive future for the game inthis State’.

Muralitharan to face disciplinary inquiry

Muralitharan is facing a disciplinary action from the BCCSL for the comments he has allegedly made in a live television show

Rex Clementine27-Jul-2002Muttiah Muralitharan will face a disciplinary inquiry conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) next week after remarks made in a recent live television chat show.An interim committee member confirmed Friday that Muralitharan will face the inquiry: “We were to have the inquiry this evening (Friday), but had to put it off due to a request from Mr. Muralitharan who said he had a private function to attend.”The inquiry will now take place next week at the cricket board headquarters.Cricket board chairman Hemaka Amarasuriya, chief executive Anura Tennakoon, as well as interim committee members Guy de Alwis, Lawrence Amarasena and Ranil Abeynaike will attend the inquiry.”We brought down a tape from the television station which aired the interview and have previewed his remarks,” said the interim member.Muralitharan spoke about a wide range of issues, criticising the cricket administration, the role of businessmen in Sri Lankan cricket and the domestic cricket scene. The BCCSL had given permission to Muralitharan to appear on the show, which was also attended by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga, but had expected him to talk only about his recovery from injury and other cricketing matters. If found guilty Muralitharan could either face a suspension or a fine.Following the interview, sports minister Johnston Fernando slapped a media ban on all cricketers and board officials until the 2003 World Cup.

QPR confirm Macauley Bonne departure

Queens Park Rangers have confirmed Macauley Bonne’s departure from the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a statement posted on the QPR website, in which the club confirmed that the 25-year-old centre-forward would be joining League One side Ipswich Town on a season-long loan deal.

The statement goes on to mention the fact that Bonne only joined Mark Warburton’s side from Charlton Athletic last October, before wishing the Zimbabwe international luck for his temporary spell at Portman Road.

Potential mistake

While it is indeed true that Bonne did not quite live up to expectations following his switch to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium last year, the argument can still easily be made that allowing the striker to leave the club, even on a temporary basis, is something of a mistake by Warburton.

As mentioned, despite only actually starting eight Championship games for QPR last season, three goals and one assist over a total of 34 league appearances is not exactly prolific form for a centre-forward, however, the £1.8m-rated man has proven previously that, when trust is placed in him by a manager, he rewards them with impressive returns.

Indeed, over his 33 Championship appearances for Charlton in 2019/20, Bonne scored 11 goals, registered two assists and created three big chances for his teammates, averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.82.

These metrics are all the more impressive when taking into account the fact the 25-year-old was playing for an Addicks side who spent the vast majority of the season at the wrong end of the second tier table, before eventually suffering relegation to League One.

Furthermore, while Warburton has added Charlie Austin to his attacking arsenal already this summer, the departure of Bonne means that the 58-year-old now only has two senior options as out and out strikers, with the second being Lyndon Dykes.

As such, should either Dykes or Austin pick up an injury, QPR could be left worryingly short of options in attack, something that a number of Rs fans are clearly concerned about, with one taking to Twitter to state their belief that the club are “a little light up top now,” while another simply claimed they think Bonne’s departure is “bizarre.”

So, all in all, while a move back to League One may well help the man Warburton dubbed a “hungry” forward build his confidence before returning to QPR next summer, unless he is planning to bring in further additions up front in the current transfer window, letting Bonne go could well be a decision that comes back to haunt the Rs gaffer.

In other news: QPR dealt major transfer blow over £900k-rated beast that’ll leave Warburton gutted

Liverpool fans react to Malen report

Liverpool are interested in signing young forward Donyell Malen from Eredivisie outfit PSV, according to Fabrizio Romano.

But the Reds face competition from Borussia Dortmund, who may view Malen as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho.

Sancho is reportedly set to join Manchester United in a £77million deal.

The lowdown on Donyell Malen

Malen, 22, scored 27 goals and provided 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions last season.

Only Georgios Giakoumakis and Steven Berguis out-scored him in the Dutch top-flight.

Malen has three years left on his current contract and is valued at £27million by Transfermarkt.

He’s currently on Euro 2020 duty with the Netherlands and set up goals in their group stage victories over Austria and North Macedonia.

Malen would provide Liverpool with additional cover ahead of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, which could see Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane miss up to a month of action at the turn of the year.

Fan feed Watch LFC relayed Romano’s claim, and here’s how fans reacted.
