Warwickshire closed in on their sixth win in nine County ChampionshipDivision One games after dominating for the third consecutive day against Sussexat Arundel.Rikki Clarke scored an unbeaten 81 as the Bears stretched their first-inningslead to 230 before finally being dismissed for 481. Boyd Rankin and Jeetan Patel then took five quick wickets between them to leave hosts Sussex in danger of an innings defeat. However, an unbroken partnership of 87 between Luke Wright (75 not out) andOllie Rayner (29 not out) ensured the game will go to the fourth day with Sussexstill trailing by 29 on 201 for 5 at the close.Warwickshire took full control of the game in the morning as Keith Barker andClarke stretched their seventh-wicket stand to 79. Wright broke the partnership with his fifth ball of the morning when he had Barker caught behind by Andrew Hodd driving at a wide ball for 52.Monty Panesar trapped Chris Metters lbw for six but Patel maintainedWarwickshire’s momentum with a quickfire 21, which included a huge six offPanesar. The England spinner gained revenge when Patel top-edged a slog to midwicket tofinish with figures of 3 for 88 from 44 overs.Clarke launched Rayner for three sixes down the ground on his way to aseason-best score but he was left stranded when Rankin gloved a lifting deliveryfrom Amjad Khan to Hodd. Sussex’s hopes of salvaging the game took a massive hit inside the opening six overs as they lost both openers.Chris Nash (nine) tried to get his bat out of the way of a delivery from Rankinbut only succeeded in getting an inside edge onto his stumps and Joyce (14) wastrapped lbw by the Ireland bowler to leave Sussex wobbling at 35 for 2.Murray Goodwin batted for more than an hour to score 10 but his vigil endedwhen he played no shot to a straight ball from Patel and was lbw. Luke Wells (32) had already survived a run out opportunity going for a suicidal single when he gave his wicket away by charging down the wicket to Patel and was stumped by Tim Ambrose.Patel claimed his third wicket when Hodd tried to sweep a ball which was toofull and was bowled to reduce Sussex to 114 for 5. With Rana Naved-ul-Hasan unlikely to bat after going to hospital for a scan on a shoulder injury, Warwickshire scented victory inside three days only to be held up by Wright and Rayner.

Watson next in line

Shane Watson still considers it a miracle that his body no longer falls apart at the merest hint of stress

Shane Watson has been elevated to vice-captain to help develop his leadership skills•AFP

Shane Watson still considers it a miracle that his body no longer falls apart at the merest hint of stress. So it is understandable that his ascension to the vice-captaincy of Australia, in all three forms of the game, was a little difficult for him to comprehend. Only a handful of years have passed since Watson was roundly dismissed due to his many injuries, and in 2006 he was lampooned for a phantom heart-attack in India. Now, Watson is a heartbeat away from the Australian captaincy.”It really has been an amazing couple of years, and something I never really thought would be coming my way after my previous part of my career when I really struggled to get on the field,” Watson said in Sydney after he was unveiled alongside new Test and limited overs skipper Michael Clarke. “For things to come together now to mean I’m vice-captain of the Australian cricket team, it’s still hard for me to get my head around. It is hard for me to get my head around that I’ve been able to play for a number of years with the Australian team and be able to contribute the way that I have, it is something I never thought would come about.”I feel like my game’s in a really good place now and my mind’s in a great place to be able to really have the mental space to be able to contribute as much as I possibly can.”The changeable nature of the vice-captaincy is a source of curiosity. Some, such as Clarke or a young Mark Taylor, are chosen with a view towards the future, while others like Ian Healy and Geoff Marsh serve as loyal lieutenants without ever really inching towards the top job. Healy was replaced by Steve Waugh before the 1997 Ashes tour in order to smooth the line of succession if Taylor did not pull out of his form dive.Watson’s role seems likely to marry both, for chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch is aware that Clarke’s Test batting has been decidedly poor for some time. Far more successful with the bat in the past year, Watson, however, is lacking in formal leadership credentials, something Ponting seemed acutely aware of as his reign stuttered towards a sad conclusion.”He hasn’t had a lot of leadership experience,” Hilditch said of Watson. “One of the big reasons we’ve made this appointment now was the reality is that Shane’s such a good player he’s not going to play much domestic cricket. So if he’s going to get his leadership skills up to another level it has to be now and it has to be as vice-captain. So it’ll be a learning curve for Shane but his first role is to support Michael.”Ever honest, Watson baulked at the PR-friendly line that leadership will add vitality to his batting. Instead he reminded all in attendance that his chief task when Australia resumes Test match duty in Sri Lanka later this year will be to turn his promising starts into match-shaping hundreds.”That’s my bigger task, even more than the vice-captaincy is actually turning my 50s into some bigger scores,” he said. “No doubt there’s something I need to continue my development as a player. I think just even over the last year or so being around the group and trying to be a leader in some way or help the younger guys … I feel like it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, to help people out more than anything.”That’s something I’m really excited about, really trying to help the young guys out coming through, because I have been very lucky to come through an era of Australian cricket as great as it really ever has been. I know how lucky I am to have those experiences from a very young age, and I’ll be trying to get the best out of everyone within the team.”

Freak run-out sparks drama amid the dullness

It was a day that crawled along, and then plodded on, but in between, the freak run-out of Rajasthan opener Vineet Saxena provided some drama amid the dullness. Saxena mistimed a drive off the first delivery after lunch, and the ball rolled away to the leg side. Bhargav Bhatt from midwicket ran in to field the ball. Meanwhile, Saxena, who was outside his ground, took two steps back in to the crease, and then strode out to do some gardening on the pitch. When he was about two feet outside the crease, he gestured in the direction of square-leg umpire K Hariharan, asking for his permission to step out of his ground. An alert Pinal Shah, the Baroda wicketkeeper-captain, sensed an opportunity and gestured frantically to Bhatt. Bhatt, who was standing beside the ball, suddenly swung into action and threw down the striker’s stumps with a direct hit, with Saxena miles down the track. Even as Baroda went up in appeal, Saxena looked confused, and Hariharan walked up to umpire Shavir Tarapore. After some discussion, the matter was referred to third umpire SS Shamsuddin, who ruled Saxena out.Now the rule says that a batsman is run-out if he is found out of his ground while the ball is still in play, whether or not a run is being attempted. A ball is in play till it settles in the hands of the wicketkeeper or the bowler. In this case, the umpires felt that the ball was in play, and the referral was made to check at what point the batsman sought permission to step outside his ground. Replays clearly showed that Saxena was well outside when he gestured to Hariharan, and was adjudged out. There were conflicting opinions among the teams and former players about the entire incident. Pinal felt he was within his rights to claim the run-out. “It was not a planned move. The ball was in play. He just walked out, and did not ask for permission before doing so. Generally if you are walking out, you just inform the umpire or the keeper or the slip fielder.”Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the Rajasthan captain, was understandably unimpressed. “I have heard it was within the rules, but I wouldn’t have claimed that wicket; that is for sure.” Pinal felt that Kanitkar’s reaction was to be expected. “If I was in the opposition, and my batsman would have got out, even I would have said the same thing. But I thought he (Saxena) made a mistake by walking out.”

Aston Villa: Talks at advanced stage for permanent Robin Olsen deal

Aston Villa are thought to be in advanced talks over a permanent move for goalkeeper Robin Olsen, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Olsen’s loan move

Olsen was one of four senior signings made by Steven Gerrard in his first transfer window in charge at Villa Park.

The 32-year-old arrived on loan from AS Roma and has been on the bench for every Premier League game since moving to the Midlands.

Olsen has served as back up to Emiliano Martinez, and it looks as if the pair will continue to work closely together at Bodymoor Heath beyond the summer.

The Latest: Source shares update

FI shared a story regarding Villa and Olsen on Thursday afternoon after being informed by a recruitment source.

They revealed that Olsen has impressed Gerrard since joining and talks over a permanent move are now at an advanced stage.

The Verdict: Good news

Although Olsen is yet to turn out in a Villa shirt, it is good news that he looks set to make his Villa stay a full-time one.

Labelled as ‘monstrous’ by the Spanish press following a performance for Sweden, Olsen has plenty of experience across Europe and on the international stage, winning seven trophies during his career.

He appears to be happy as second choice to Martinez, so it looks as if Villa will now have two high-quality shot-stoppers on the books heading into Gerrard’s first full season.

Southampton: Falk makes Awoniyi claim

According to reliable journalist Christian Falk on Twitter, Southampton are interested in signing Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

The lowdown: Rise to stardom

It’s been anything but a simple pathway to success for the Nigerian frontman after a six-year spell on the books of Liverpool.

The 24-year-old was unable to obtain a work permit to ply his trade in the United Kingdom and as such spent loan spells in Germany, Belgium and Holland before making the permanent switch to the Bundesliga in 2021.

Now, yet another move could be on the horizon following an impressive start to life in the German top flight, but this time with a permanent stay in the Premier League.

The latest: Falk confirms Saints interest

Taking to Twitter, Head of Football for German outlet SportBILD Falk stated that Southampton are among the suitors for the Nigerian international.

“TRUE. West Ham, NUFC and Southampton are interested in Taiwo Awoniyi @fcunion. The striker has a release clause of 20 Mio €.”

Recently hailed as a ‘hero’ by Union Berlin’s official Twitter account, Awoniyi is the only player in the club’s history to score 13 Bundesliga goals in a single season.

The verdict: Striker surgery required

As Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl prepares for life without Armando Broja next season – although a potential permanent deal is likely to be explored – it’s wise that the club begin to explore potential alternative options.

Outside of Broja’s nine strikes, this term, Southampton striking trio Che Adams, Shane Long and Adam Armstrong have only managed a lowly 12 goals combined across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.

With 18 goals and four assists in 39 outings this term in Germany, Awoniyi has certainly made an impact at the business end of the pitch and Hasenhuttl would be wise to push to bring the Nigerian with an ever-rising stock to St Mary’s.

Malinga to miss second Test against India

Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, has been rested from the second Test against India beginning in Colombo on July 26

Sa'adi Thawfeeq24-Jul-2010Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, has been rested from the second Test against India beginning in Colombo on July 26. Malinga was one of the architects of Sri Lanka’s ten-wicket win in Galle but will miss out at the SSC because of “stiffness in his knee”. He will be replaced by Dilhara Fernando, while spinner Ajantha Mendis also returned to the squad.Aravinda de Silva, the chairman of selectors, said Malinga was rested on the advice of team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek after the bowler complained of stiffness in his dodgy right knee, which had kept him out of Test cricket for 30 months.”We have to be cautious with Malinga. He was not feeling quite fit to go through a five-day Test. He complained of stiffness in his knee,” de Silva said. “We are closely monitoring Malinga’s fitness and we are hopeful he will be fully fit for the third Test starting in ten days time.” The third Test starts on August 3 at the P Sara Oval.Malinga had made his comeback to Test cricket in Galle after a long absence and played a critical role in Sri Lanka’s victory by taking 5 for 50 in the second innings. He bowled a total of 30 overs in the match for seven wickets. The setback to Malinga is a severe blow for Sri Lanka especially since the SSC Test will be their first after Muttiah Muralitharan retired from the format. Malinga and Muralitharan had combined to take 15 of India’s 20 wickets in Galle.Mendis, who had taken 6 for 67 in a practice game against the Indians but was overlooked for the first Test, is likely to take Muralitharan’s place. The other contender for the spot, offspinner Suraj Randiv, retained his place in the squad.Following Muralitharan’s retirement, former captain Mahela Jayawardene was named vice-captain to Kumar Sangakkara. “We want Mahela, who has a good cricket brain, to be part of the decision-making process in the middle,” de Silva said.Squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews, Prasanna Jayawardene, Ajantha Mendis, Dilhara Fernando, Chanaka Welagedara, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Thilina Kandamby, Dammika Prasad, Lahiru Thirimanne, Nuwan Pradeep.
