Paranavitana, Mahela ensure draw on final day

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Mahela Jayawardene marched to his second half-century of the match as Sri Lanka scuppered West Indies’ hope for a win•AFP

A lacklustre post-lunch performance from West Indies, and rain clouds that once again swooped over Galle in the afternoon, ensured that Sri Lanka held on for a draw in the first Test in Galle. The visitors were stiff in the field, allowing too many easy runs and despite the fall of two wickets in the afternoon session to go with two from the morning, West Indies failed to make sufficient inroads into the Sri Lankan line-up.The debutant seamer Andre Russell lacked the fire and intensity to cause any concern after lunch as the well-set pair of Tharanga Paranavitana and Mahela Jayawardene negotiated the early overs of the afternoon with relative ease in comparison to the discomfort caused by Kemar Roach in the morning. While Russell maintained a consistent line and length, he lacked the pace and movement to pose a threat, and even the return of Roach could not make an impact.Shane Shillingford too, was handled confidently in the afternoon, despite the offspinner’s dismissal of Paranavitana for 95, midway through the session. Darren Sammy, who had dropped Paranavitana off the same bowler earlier on, held on to this one at slip, after the batsman had looked edgy in the 90s. Mahela, though, who had been tormented by Shillingford through the Test, began to play him with more assurance, twice punching him past point off the back foot, and finding singles and twos in the vacant outfield as Sammy pushed for wickets with men around the bat.Mahela progressed to his second half-century of the match with a straight six off part-timer Brendan Nash, but fell to him two overs later, tamely chipping back to the bowler when he had looked good for a long innings. Thilan Samaraweera struck three fours in his 19 and was looking good in the company of Angelo Mathews before rain intervened once again, forcing the teams off the field and shutting the door on a riveting Test match. It was not always such smooth sailing for Sri Lanka on the final day, though. An electric spell from Roach in the morning had blasted out Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara. Roach sizzled through that opening burst, hurling down two hostile maidens to Paranavitana before sending Dilshan’s off stump cartwheeling with a fiery yorker. Sangakkara fell in Roach’s next over, edging outside the off stump, to leave Sri Lanka tottering at 110 for two before Paranavitana and Mahela combined to claw and scrap their way to lunch. The pair survived a tense spell from Shillingford, whose fizzing, biting deliveries did everything but make the crucial breakthrough for the visitors, and took control of the situation after the lunch break.Despite the stalemate, West Indies had positives to take into the second Test following their impressive work in the first innings. Sri Lanka’s second-innings batting and Ajantha Mendis’ spell on the second day was the silver lining in what was otherwise a bleak Test for them. West Indies’ strong show completed the week of the underdog in world cricket as they came away with laudable draws against more fancied opponents, just as New Zealand and Pakistan did against India and South Africa respectively.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs eyeing move for Denzel Dumfries

Tottenham Hotspur are now eyeing a move for Inter Milan right wing-back Denzel Dumfries, according to a report by Sport Mediaset (via SportWitness).

The Lowdown: Conte’s search for a RWB

It was heavily reported that Spurs boss Antonio Conte wanted to bring in a new right wing-back in January.

Fabio Paratici was initially negotiating with Adama Traore over the proposition of playing in the position, having come close to agreeing a £20m fee with Wolves.

However, Spanish giants Barcelona swooped in at the last minute, snatching the 26-year-old out of Conte’s grasp.

As a result, the Lilywhites manager has been left with just Emerson Royal, following the season-ending injury sustained by Matt Doherty.

The Latest: Dumfries rumours

According to a report by Sport Mediaset (translated by SportWitness), Inter may need to sell players to manage the books this summer. Therefore, Dumfries could be an option which would make significant money.

It is claimed that Bayern Munich and Tottenham would be “in the front row” for a summer transfer, as both sides are “watching him very carefully”.

Sport Mediaset further report that it would take in the region between £29.5m and £33.7m to secure the Dutchman’s services.

The Verdict: Good signing

After a shaky start to his Serie A career, Dumfries has gone on to earn comparisons with that of Inter legend Maicon, after a string of “brilliant” performances.

The Netherlands international’s underlying stats certainly illustrate this; he ranks in the 99th percentile in his position for non-penalty expected goals, non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists, touches in the attacking penalty area and progressive passes received (Europe’s top five leagues via FB Ref).

His attacking threat would complement Conte’s play-style perfectly, as he would slot in as an overlapping wing-back in Spurs’ back five.

If Paratici can get this deal across the line, we feel this would be a perfect signing for Conte.

West Ham eyeing move for Tosin Adarabioyo

West Ham and David Moyes will be eyeing a move for Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Fantastic form

Since arriving at Craven Cottage in 2020, the 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength, making a name for himself in the English second tier.

The defender has played a pivotal part in Fulham’s emphatic Championship-leading campaign. He has missed just one match whilst available, having played the full 90 minutes in 26 of his 27 league appearances.

Adarabioyo leads Marco Silva’s squad for clearances, averaging 3.7 per game in the Championship (via WhoScored). This illustrates his importance to the current Fulham side, who have only conceded 28 goals this season, in stark contrast to their sensational 79 goals scored.

The Latest: West Ham eyeing Adarabioyo

A report from Claret & Hugh in recent days claimed that Moyes is likely to make a move for the 6 foot 5 Fulham defender in the summer, having already tried to secure his signature in January. The report added that the Cottagers have placed a £22m price tag on the centre-back, and ‘talks are set to get underway’ between Adarabioyo’s management and the Hammers.

O’Rourke has weighed in on the situation, claiming that Moyes will be monitoring Adarabioyo closely. Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said:

“Yeah, in January, they were after a centre-back but were not able to bring in the targets that David Moyes wanted, so I’m sure Tosin Adarabioyo, who’s done well at Fulham, has Premier League experience from last season with Fulham, will be somebody that will be on his radar.”

The Verdict: Good addition for the Irons

A graduate of the Manchester City academy, Adarabioyo undertook a number of loan moves before arriving in west London.

Whilst at Blackburn Rovers, former team-mate Darragh Lenihan hailed the 24-year-old as a “brilliant” player who “has all the attributes to play for Manchester City”.

Despite Adarabioyo not making it at the Etihad Stadium, City manager Pep Guardiola made sure to praise the defender before his side faced Fulham last year, proclaiming: “He’s a guy from the academy. Finally, he took his position in the Premier League and we are more than delighted the level he’s showing. He deserves it, he’s an exceptional person and a good footballer.”

With all of this high praise, this suggests that West Ham could have an exceptional defender on their hands – if Fulham are willing to sell him to their fellow London club in the summer.

Leeds: Whelan reacts to Phillips update

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been reacting to an update regarding Kalvin Phillips, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: On-air claim

The midfielder has missed the club’s last six Premier League games with a hamstring injury he sustained against Brentford back in December.

However, talking to Sky Sports towards the end of January, the 26-year-old admitted that his recovery is all on track for a March return following an operation.

He also discussed his hopes for the World Cup at the end of the year, with his interview being broadcast live on Sky Sports News.

The Latest: Whelan reacts

Whelan, who contributes as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, was talking to Football Insider regarding Phillips’ comments. He labelled the midfielder’s return as ‘huge’ and was buzzing over the update, saying:

“It would be massive to get him back soon.

“Especially in this second part of the season, as it gets closer down towards the bottom and teams around Leeds have made lots of signings.

“To have someone like Kalvin with his quality and the stability he brings to the side, it’s huge.

“His experience and what he brings to the team is so important. I think you can see that from the points that have been dropped in his absence this season.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Leeds have since shared pictures of Phillips and Liam Cooper all smiles on the training pitch, so hopefully it is just a matter of time until both are back up to speed and ready for action.

Marcelo Bielsa needs all the sidelined players back as soon as possible due to the size of his squad, and both Phillips and Cooper have been pivotal under the Argentine over the last four seasons.

That is especially true for Phillips, with Bielsa having limited midfield options as it is and needing to rely on centre-back Robin Koch to line out in the defensive midfield role in recent weeks, with the German himself only returning from a long-term layoff.

Spurs plan fresh Antonio Rudiger talks

Tottenham Hotspur are set to ramp up their pursuit of Antonio Rudiger in the coming days, according to an inside source…

What’s the word?

As revealed by Football Insider this week, the north London outfit are in the race to sign the £100k-per-week Germany international after he rejected a new Chelsea contract, meaning he is currently free to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, it is thought that Spurs have planned discussions behind-the-scenes in an effort to persuade the 28-year-old to swap the Blues for their capital city rivals in 2022.

Lilywhites sporting director Fabio Paratici is said to be pushing hard to get an early agreement in place but they will face a battle to secure him as foreign teams can seal him on a pre-contract agreement as early as January, something that Spurs do not have the luxury of.

Statement signing

This would be quite an outlandish move from Spurs, considering their west London rivals won the Champions League last summer and are quite some way ahead of them on and off the pitch.

However, the fact that Antonio Conte is in charge boosts their chances of landing the 6 foot 3 colossus as the pair worked together when the Italian was at the helm.

45 of his 172 appearances for the Blues came under Conte as they won the 2017/18 FA Cup together, leading to the German describing the 52-year-old as a “very good coach” to reporters.

Rudiger has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers under Thomas Tuchel over the past 12 months, with BT Sport pundit and Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand a big fan.

“Look at Rudiger, he’s arguably, since Tuchel has been there [at Chelsea], been the best defender in the Premier League,” he told his podcast (via the Metro). “Him or [Ruben] Dias in that time. He’s been unbelievable, he’s like an animal.”

Indeed, the German is just one of two players to have played every minute of every Premier League outing for the Blues this term, where he has averaged a second-most 2.2 aerial duels won, 1.1 tackles and an 86.9% passing accuracy when managing over 70 attempts per game, as per WhoScored.

Evidently, Rudiger is an efficient ball-playing defender and one that would instantly improve Spurs’ backline, not just because of his trophy record at Stamford Bridge.

The vastly-experienced defender would be quite the signing to make next year and it would certainly reveal the ambitions of the club under Conte. As such, many around N17 must be absolutely excited by this latest development.

Spurs fans would surely love Rudiger at the club, so this update should provide some huge encouragement heading into January.

Everton predicted XI vs Norwich

Everton will travel to Carrow Road this afternoon as they seek to take their first three point win of the year in the Premier League, and Rafa Benitez’s side are looking like they’re in good shape to do so with the return of important players and three new signings.

Richarlison and Yerry Mina were spotted back in training this week, and Benitez took to his pre-match press conference to confirm that they would be available in terms of being fit enough to be picked for the travelling squad today.

The Spanish manager opened up about the returning players;

“All the others were training and now we have to treat them carefully. At the moment they are fine, then it is up to us to see who can be available for his game or the next games.”

It’s unclear as to whether Benitez will throw his newly returned back into the team, but with the side just six points off the relegation zone currently, the Toffees manager will surely be mindful in selecting his best available team to secure the wins and climb back into a more comfortable position in the league table as soon as possible.

With that being said, this is how Football Fancast expects Everton to set up against Norwich City today…

With five changes to the team that beat Hull City, we expect Jordan Pickford, Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Mina and Abdoulaye Doucouré to be included in the team that will take on the challenge at Norwich City this afternoon.

Richarlison and Mina are back in our predicted line up, but Benitez will potentially use the opportunity of playing the bottom of the league Canaries, to use his substitutions throughout the game, with Mina unlikely to play a full 90 minutes after being out injured for a prolonged period this season.

It is likely that Andre Gomes will be axed from the team, with Doucoure returning to the starting line up, despite the £120k-p/w gem scoring against Hull in the FA Cup victory this week, Benitez clearly doesn’t favour the Portuguese midfielder, giving him only two Premier League starts this season so far.

We predicted that Vitaliy Mykolenko will be the only new signing in the starting line up after Lucas Digne was sold to Aston Villa this week, but again there could be an opportunity for youngster Nathan Patterson to gain his Premier League debut later in the game, replacing Coleman at right back, depending on how the game plays out.

Everton have the opportunity to snatch their second away win of the season against Norwich this afternoon, who have lost their last five games and lost 14 of their 20 games so far this season.

Liverpool fans slam Trent vs Leicester

Many Liverpool fans were left slamming the display of Trent Alexander-Arnold in their 1-0 loss away at Leicester City in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The right-back was partially at fault for the only goal of the game, as he let Ademola Lookman run off of him into the penalty box to tuck the ball away past Alisson at the near post.

It pretty much summed up his night, as he seemed to struggle like many other Reds throughout the match, losing out on all five of his duels, while he also failed to record a single shot on goal, dribble, blocked shot or tackle (SofaScore).

Alexander-Arnold was also unsuccessful with 11 of his crosses, and lost possession no fewer than on 32 separate occasions in total, by far the most out of any player on the pitch (SofaScore).

Liverpool fans slam Alexander-Arnold

These members of the Anfield faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one Red even going as far as claim that he was a ‘weak link’:

“Little or no mention of Trent for the Leicester goal. Mistakes happen and poor decisions are made in every game of football but laziness is inexcusable. He just refuses to track Lookman. Very poor.”

Credit: @ats31289

“Terrible performance tonight but let’s be honest Trent was awful for me one of his worst games in a #LFC shirt. He didn’t track his man or run back it’s as if he was injured he just didn’t seem bothered. Simply not good enough Klopp needs to have a strong word”

Credit: @razorsharpe09

“Absolutely awful display from Liverpool. Mane’s best is well behind him now, must look to upgrade. Firmino offered nothing coming on. Trent/Matip terrible in the lead up to the goal. City’s title to lose now.”

Credit: @corza_89

“Very poor night from Liverpool tonight. 6pts behind City is a big gap. Trent, Mane, Ox were all well off the pace. When the pen didn’t go in it felt like the night wasn’t going to be our night.”

Credit: @AndrewMort18

“We can talk about Mane and Henderson but they’ve been poor a lot. Salah and Trent absolutely stunk the place out. Leicester have no right to win with 10 players missing. Rubbish. Never seen subs make less of an impact.”

Credit: @GraemeKelly1

“Our inability to adapt to these games will cost us. Trent was targeted as our weak link and it’s proved fruitful as defensively he was poor this evening”
