David Warner turns to concrete pitches for batting rhythm

Laughs off talk of poor form and believes he is close to being at his best

Andrew McGlashan27-Oct-2021David Warner has laughed off talk about poor form and believes he is close to finding his best touch, having swapped the practice nets in the UAE for synthetic and concrete surfaces.Warner, who has played five innings in all cricket since April with scores of 0, 2, 0, 1 and 14, revealed the training tactic – something he has previously used at home – was an attempt to overcome nets which are showing the effects of a lot of traffic over the last few months and, he believes, risk bringing bad habits into his batting. He spoke with the Australian coaching staff on tour about making use of the different surfaces, which are available in Dubai, having received a text from batting coach Trent Woodhill who is a long-time mentor. Warner has had balls hurled at him with the ‘wanger’, or dog-thrower, at up to 145kph so that he can get his feet “dancing” ahead of facing a Sri Lanka attack that possesses considerable pace.”One thing that should be noted is these practice wickets have been up for close to 12 weeks now, so training is quite difficult on them as well,” Warner said. “At the moment I’m training on some synthetic wickets and polished concrete to get timing and rhythm and moving my feet so that’s helping me.”When you are practicing on low wickets that aren’t great it gets you into sticky positions in the games when you are on better wickets. You have to get your brain working again with your feet and hands to get into good positions.”You want to feel bat on ball, but it also makes you move your feet more. We are so used to the ball coming onto the bat and when you do that and are moving, you start dancing in the game. If you are practicing bad habits at training because you aren’t able to get that volume in, you have to go back to the basics.”Warner felt positive signs during his 14 off 15 balls against South Africa which included three crisp boundaries before he drove to backward point. He lamented his lack of conviction in the stroke that brought his downfall, saying he was too focused on seeing out what was Kagiso Rabada’s third over of his opening spell.”In hindsight I should have played it over the top, but I pushed it to backward point,” he said. “My feet were moving, I got into great positions, but my awareness should have been to go with it. Felt I was one boundary away from having a good innings”I actually think people talking about my form is quite funny. I laugh at the matter. I’ve played hardly any cricket. Had two games in the IPL and then warm-up games are warm-up games for a reason. The other day I got my benchmark as where I should be at with my feet.”Warner believes the T20 game is not purely about the volume of runs a batter scores but how they fit into the broader team gameplan. “Individuals have to play their roles. It’s not necessarily a big score, it’s how you get 20, 30 or 40 and then if you get that big score it puts you in a great position. You’ve just got to make sure you aren’t soaking up too many balls.”There is also scrutiny of Warner’s opening partner Aaron Finch, who is another to make use of the concrete wickets, after he returned from knee surgery in this tournament. Finch carved to third man for a duck against South Africa although his overall T20I returns in 2021 are far from poor with 324 runs at 32.40, albeit his strike-rate of 126.56 is his lowest for any calendar year since he made his debut. The opening game was the first time Warner and Finch had opened in a T20I since last September against England. They were a key part of the success Australia had in the format in the 2019-2020 season, but that was followed by Warner’s injury last year against India and subsequent unavailability. “It almost seems like we’ve been in retirement and come back after the time we’ve had off,” he said.

Kennar Lewis' Powerplay aggression lays foundation for big Tallawahs win

St Lucia Kings were promisingly placed in a steep chase but rapidly fell away

Peter Della Penna10-Sep-2021A powerful attack on St Lucia Kings’ new-ball spinners by opening batter Kennar Lewis resulted in the second-fastest half-century of the 2021 CPL and laid the platform for an imposing total that was well out of reach to chase in a 55-run for Jamaica Tallawahs.Lewis brought up his fifty off 21 balls with a single off David Wiese in the seventh over after having wreaked havoc earlier on Jeavor Royal, Samit Patel and Roston Chase in the first four overs of play.Lewis justified Rovman Powell’s decision to bat first as he bullied Royal’s left-arm spin in the opening over, slicing two fours over the off side before heaving a six over midwicket in the first four balls. After opening partner Kirk McKenzie struck Alzarri Joseph for three boundaries in the second over, Lewis got back to work on Patel in the third, punishing a leg-stump line for two fours and two sixes to start the over. After McKenzie fell to Chase in the fourth, Lewis stole momentum back just as fast by ending the over with another slog sweep over the leg side rope.Lewis eventually fell to a slower ball from Kadeem Alleyne flicked to deep midwicket for a catch by Royal, but at 91 for 2 in the eighth over, Tallawahs were off to a flying start and continued to maintain a double-digit run rate the rest of the way. Imad Wasim gave Tallawahs one more final boost in the 20th over, clubbing a hat-trick of sixes off Alleyne to push them past the 200 barrier.Three of Kings’ top four – Andre Fletcher, Mark Deyal and Chase – blasted rapid cameos and at 104 for 2 in the ninth over put their side in a superb position to overhaul the target of 212. But Carlos Brathwaite struck with back-to-back deliveries, getting Deyal with a slower bouncer pulled tamely to deep square leg before Chase fell next ball to a bouncer at full pace gloved down the leg side to Lewis.Kings could not recover from the twin setbacks as Imad left-arm spin and a pair of sharp run outs dented Kings further before they were eventually bowled out for 156 with 11 balls left unused.

Shakib, Shafiul return for Ireland T20s

Bangladesh have brought back allrounder Shakib Al Hasan and medium-pacer Shafiul Islam to their squad for the Twenty20 matches in Ireland and the Netherlands in July. Teenage batsman Anamul Haque and allrounder Farhad Reza are the omissions from the squad that failed to make the final of the Twenty20 tri-series in Zimbabwe. Shakib had been rested for the tri-series.Akram Khan, Bangladesh’s chief selector, said Anamul had been left out so he could focus on the upcoming Under-19 World Cup in Australia this August. “He [Anamul Haque] has a lot of time and I think if he plays in the age-level World Cup, it will bring more maturity to his game,” Akram said. Anamul scored only 16 runs in three matches during the T20s in Harare.Shafiul returned to the side after being sidelined by a shoulder injury he sustained during the Asia Cup in March. “We have always maintained that we are not in favour of major changes in the team,” Akram said. “Shafiul is one of our first-choice pace bowlers so his return will be a boost.”The tour begins with a three-match series against Ireland between July 18 and 21 in Belfast. The second leg is at The Hague, where Bangladesh play Scotland on July 24 and Netherlands on July 25. It will be Bangladesh’s second preparatory tour ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September.Squad Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Ashraful, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Ziaur Rahman, Elias Sunny, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Abul Hasan.

Windward Islands sealed their fourth straight win in the Caribbean T20, edging past Guyana in a closely-fought, rain-affected game at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Choosing to field, Guyana, relying on important contributions from opener Sewnarine Chattergoon (27) and captain Christopher Barnwell (32) and a late surge from Veerasammy Permaul, reached 140 for 8 in 20 overs. Darren Sammy picked up 3 for 11, excellent figures in a four-over spell. All of his wickets came in one over.Rain intervened after Windwards had reached 5 without loss in the chase, and the target was revised to 119 in 16 overs and Windwards just about managed that. Opener Johnson Charles led the way with 65, off 43 balls, striking three fours and three sixes. Charles was the third wicket to fall with the score on 88, and Windwards needed 31 off 21 balls at the time.Though Devendra Bishoo bowled economically, picking three for 15 in four overs, Devon Smith saw Windwards through, making an unbeaten 25 off 19 balls with two fours and a six. In the final over, at the fall of Shane Shillingford’s wicket, Windwards needed 3 off 3 balls and the win was sealed off the last ball of the match. Windwards are among the two decided semi-finalists.In another rain-affected match at the same venue, Trinidad and Tobago brushed aside Canada, winning by eight wickets and sealing their place in the semi-finals. Canada, after opting to bat, began in encouraging fashion, their openers Hiral Patel and Ruvindu Gunasekera adding 43 for the first wicket. But the innings fell apart after that, nine wickets falling for 56 runs. No one else, apart from the extras column, reached double-figures and Canada were kept to 99 for 9. Ravi Rampaul was the wrecker-in-chief, taking 4 for 26, and Dwayne Bravo helped him out with 3 for 20 in four overs.T&T lost Lendl Simmons early and Adrian Barath was given out obstructing the field upon deviating the wicketkeeper’s throw. Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin, however, ensured there were no further hiccups. Rain halted play in the 12th over and the target was revised to 91 in 18 overs. Darren Bravo top-scored with an unbeaten 42 off 41 balls and Ramdin chipped in with 30 off 27 in a 59-run stand. The win was achieved in the 16th over.

Victoria batsman Ray Harvey dies

Ray Harvey – one of six brothers of whom two, Neil and Merv, went on to play for Australia, while an fourth, Mick, also played for his state – has died in Melbourne at the age of 85

Martin Williamson10-Jan-2011Ray Harvey – one of six brothers of whom two, Neil and Merv, went on to play for Australia, while a fourth, Mick, also played for his state – has died in Melbourne at the age of 85.Harvey was an attacking batsman who only managed to hold down a place in the Victoria side for two seasons. hile his ability was there for all to see, he perhaps lacked the drive of his more accomplished siblings. Bill Lawry said that he was one of the two best district cricketers he had faced. His first-class debut came in 1947-48, although he had already made his mark when scoring 86 for Victoria against Australian Services as a 17-year-old in 1943-44. In a side which contained three Harvey brothers, he scored 42 and 22 not out, but despite being given a long run in the team he failed to pass fifty. He was in and out of the team -more out than in – over the next few seasons, getting his chance when regulars were on Test duty, but finally looked the part when drafted in near the end of the 1952-53 summer, converting his maiden fifty into a career-best 121 against Western Australia. In 1953-54 he was a regular in the Victoria side, recording two more hundreds and making 699 runs at 49.92, and that earned him a place in the Australia XI against the England tourists at the start of the following summer in what was effectively a Test trial. But his form again fell away markedly, and in 15 matches over the next six season he passed fifty only twice, in consecutive innings at the end of 1958-59.For Fitzroy in Victorian Premier Cricket he was a major player, scoring 19 centuries and 9,146 runs in first-grade competition, both of which were club records. Like his brothers, he also represented his state at baseball.
