Billy Godleman, Luis Reece centuries make winless Leicestershire toil

No respite for rock-bottom club as Derbyshire openers add 251 for first wicket

ECB Reporters Network27-Sep-2022Billy Godleman and Luis Reece scored their first County Championship hundreds of the season to put Derbyshire in a commanding position on the second day of the LV=Insurance match against Leicestershire. On a day of records at the Incora County Ground, Godleman, 158 not out, and Reece, 116, shared an opening stand of 251 to severely dent Leicestershire’s chances of ending their winless run in the Championship. The bottom club in Division Two endured three tough sessions in the field, taking only two wickets as Derbyshire closed on 356 for 2, a lead of 107.Leicestershire went into the day knowing they had to make early inroads with a ball that was only 16 overs old but a limited attack rarely looked like taking a wicket.Even Chris Wright was out of sorts by his standards and the lack of pressure on Godleman and Reece allowed them to settle in and accumulate steadily throughout the morning session. The closest Leicestershire came to breaking the stand was when Godleman, whose previous highest score in the Championship this year was 43, tried to hit Callum Parkinson over the top but the ball dropped just out of reach of the fielder running back from mid-on.By lunch, Derbyshire had added 89 runs in 32 overs to move to 146 without loss, only the fourth century stand between Godleman and Reece in six seasons of opening together.Although a dry, hot summer has favoured batting, the pair have struggled in the Championship but on a good pitch and faced with increasingly threadbare bowling, they made sure of ending the season on a high.Reece pulled Ed Barnes for six to bring up the 200 stand in the 62nd over which was Derbyshire’s fifth double-century partnership of the season, a record for the county.Five overs later he reached his century which came off 205 balls and Godleman needed one ball fewer to complete his, which gave the pair another entry in the county record books. It was the 16th instance of both openers scoring 100 in the same innings, the third time they have achieved the feat, equalling the Derbyshire record held by Kim Barnett and Peter Bowler. The next milestone passed was Derbyshire’s highest first-wicket stand against Leicestershire of 233, set by Denis Smith and Albert Alderman at Chesterfield in 1937, and it came as a surprise when Reece was dismissed two overs before tea.He chipped back a return catch as he went to drive Rehan Ahmed’s leg spin but there was no respite for the visitors as Brooke Guest joined Godleman to set another record. When Derbyshire reached a third batting point, they had scored 300 in the first innings of every Championship match at Derby this season for the first time in the club’s history. When the light improved enough for Leicestershire to claim a second new ball, Roman Walker had Guest caught behind for 40 but Godleman reached his 150 before the close on the day he passed 10,000 first-class runs.

-Eu estava precisando bastante desse gol, até pra minha confiança. Estava ansioso pra poder fazer o primeiro gol aqui no Náutico.

As well as Diaz: Slot must drop Liverpool ace who’s becoming a big problem

Festivity fever has gripped the nation, but with Boxing Day comes football, and those of a Liverpool persuasion are going to be waking up with just one thing in mind: Leicester City.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side meet Liverpool at Anfield this evening as they look to stir an upset through the remnants of the manager bounce that has faded after a promising start, for Newcastle and Wolves have heavily beaten the Foxes across the past two weeks.

Four points clear at the top (with a game in hand), Liverpool will double down on their conviction ahead of the match, head-and-shoulders above their Premier League rivals as the team to beat as we approach the new year.

But Nottingham Forest’s Merseyside win back in September serves as a cautionary tale to enter contests with the genuine fear of defeat, lest complacency stifle the synergy and style that Arne Slot has finely crafted over several months.

Boxing Day routinely fosters thrilling, high-scoring fixtures, and while the Reds will be desperate to keep a clean sheet after shipping eight from their past three top-flight matches, it’s felt that the hosts will have too much for 17th-place Leicester.

Liverpool team news

Slot expressed caution in his pre-match press conference, with the frenetic festive period more than capable of turning over an upset or two.

On the injury front, defensive duo Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley are still sidelined after respective setbacks picked up at the start of the month.

Things look rather promising, that aside, and Liverpool might see some rotation after the high-octane victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with Curtis Jones sure to be eyeing a midfield starting berth.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

Diogo Jota’s fitness has steadily increased over the past few weeks and he might be keen on displacing Luis Diaz at centre-forward, though Darwin Nunez is sure to be eyeing up the place himself having been dropped down at N17.

Diaz starred against Tottenham, bagging a brace and offering a silky and unusual take on the number nine role, but he’s not as clinical and consistent as someone like Jota, who could be the difference-maker against a City backline that could crumble against such an elite marksman.

While Slot doesn’t really ring the changes, he might be keen to send Andy Robertson back to the bench too, replacing him with Kostas Tsimikas.

Why Slot should drop Andy Robertson

Robertson is one of Liverpool’s longest-serving members, joining from Hull City in an astute £10m deal back in 2017. His signing and debut season were overshadowed by Mohamed Salah’s record-breaking brilliance, but 319 appearances and a host of major honours later, he’s a legend of the modern era.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.

The 30-year-old has weathered a few storms over the past several seasons, however, and may not be quite the same electric machine of old, with errors and athletic lapses slipping into his season.

Make no mistake, Robertson is cultured and experienced with one of the finest ball-playing abilities of any full-back in the business, ranking among the top 1% of such players for passes attempted, the top 3% for progressive passes and the top 2% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

But he’s declined. There’s no question that he’s a lesser version of his former self, even acknowledging in November that some detractors had “written me off” due to his dip in form and security.

He’s conceded recent penalties against Real Madrid and Southampton while being shown the violent glare of the red card during a 2-2 draw against Fulham this month, leaving reporter Lewis Bower criticising the “terrible” mistake in an afternoon that was “a bit of a mare” for the Scotland skipper.

But it’s not just these instances; they are not flashes in a grimy pan. Tsimikas has been second-choice throughout his Liverpool career, joining from Olympiakos in 2020. Now, though, he’s earning minutes on the big stage over a fully fit Robertson, producing results that reinforce Slot’s decision.

This detailed statistical collation makes an interesting comment on Robertson’s athletic regression, with his Greek peer outstripping him across a number of defensive and sporting metrics, albeit from a shallower data pool.

Robertson is one of Liverpool’s highest earners at £160k-per-week, but the paper covering the cracks is starting to wear thin. Tsimikas, 28, is far more authoritative in ball-winning situations while maintaining a crispness with his passing that suits Slot’s set-up just fine.

Change may be afoot at Anfield during the Christmas hangover, with Robertson and perhaps Diaz among those that Slot could place on the bench. Remember, this is a congested period and Liverpool meet West Ham United at the London Stadium in just three days.

For now, let’s just take it game by game. Four or five months from now, plot threads will weave together in a grand slam denouement that may or may not see Liverpool lift the biggest prizes Europe has to offer.

Andy Robertson and Arne Slot

Beating Leicester would only strengthen Slot’s accord though, for it would serve as another subtle but sinister reminder to ostensible title rivals that Liverpool have the quality, depth and dynamism to triumph.

Rotation is key, especially with a trip to West Ham just a few days away. Robertson needs to be dropped, with Tsimikas more than capable of serving well in his stead.

Their own Vinicius Jr: Slot must now unleash Liverpool’s "special" talent

It’s the most fear-inducing fixture of the season. Of any season. Real Madrid will meet Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, with Anfield desperate for revenge against the Spanish giants.

Liverpool’s track record against the La Liga and Champions League holders is, admittedly, not great. Across eight recent meetings, the Reds have been beaten seven times and drawn once, with that goalless affair merely the second leg of a quarter-finals tie that had already seen a 3-1 loss inflicted.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool, however, stand as good a chance as any iteration from the past decade in ending the hoodoo and continuing their perfect start to the Champions League campaign, with four victories claimed from as many group stage matches.

Los Blancos, conversely, have lost two of their opening matches in Europe’s elite competition and will be desperate to claw their way back into the ascendency with a statement win on Merseyside.

The visitors are nursing a host of injuries to key players, but Liverpool have some absences of their own to contend with.

Liverpool team news

First, the negatives. Alisson Becker is not yet ready to return from his injury layoff, but then Liverpool have a more-than-able deputy in Caoimhin Kelleher. Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota’s continued absences will weaken the Reds’ frontline too.

Left-back Kostas Tsimikas has picked up a knock in training so Andy Robertson will retain his starting role despite flattering to deceive against Southampton on Sunday. Trent Alexander-Arnold, however, has trained and could play a part.

In any case, it’s not like Real don’t have issues of their own. Namely, Vinicius Junior has picked up a hamstring injury and faces several weeks out. Carlo Ancelotti will put Kylian Mbappe in his favoured left wing role though, so there’s a debate to be had if that area of the field is actually weakened.

Liverpool will look to exploit the absence though, and while Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez should form two parts of the attacking triptych, and though Luis Diaz would love to start, Cody Gakpo could retain his berth, especially since he could serve the visitors with a reminder of Vini due to his style of play.

Cody Gakpo is Slot's own Vinicius Junior

According to FBref, Real Madrid’s Brazilian sensation is one of Gakpo’s most tactically similar players, albeit the 24-year-old is operating at a higher level than Liverpool’s Dutch forward.

Both left-sided players capable of performing in a central striking role, Gakpo’s fluency and tactical intelligence have seen him go from strength to strength under his compatriot Slot this season, only posting six goals and two assists across 18 matches in all competitions but receiving just nine starts.

Conversely, Vini has obliterated Spanish and Champions League grounds over the past several months, claiming 12 goals and eight assists from 18 matches.

Gakpo’s dynamism, his protean attacking threat, could provide the Anfield spectacle with the Vini-esque figure to set it alight. Once hailed for his “special skill set” by former Reds assistant manager Pep Lijnders, the Netherlands international has the talent and big-game aura to step up and make the affair his own from the left.

Like Vinicius Jr., Gakpo’s blend of technical soundness and fast pace could exploit the Madrid side’s lack of options at right-back. Dani Carvajal is out for the season with an ACL injury and Fede Valverde played there in a makeshift role during the 3-0 victory over Leganes at the weekend, scoring and producing the kind of creative display that would cause problems.

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.

However, he’ll have to contend with issues of his own, should he be pitted against Gakpo. As it is, Lucas Vasquez, 33, would be the defensively-sounded choice, but even so, this is hardly ideal for the away team.

Mbappe will pose a real threat, and you can’t shake the feeling this might be the match he targets to make his true introduction to life in Real white, but Slot’s frontline is as good as it gets.

Petersen leads South Africa response after Pant's stunning century

Rishabh Pant is a shot-maker of such quality that he can take the conditions out of the equation, and for 100 runs and 139 balls in Cape Town he did just that. This wasn’t so much a Test match innings as it was a display of jaw-dropping daredevilry. And at the end of it, India had a lead of 211 and a real chance at making history.South Africa, who to their immense credit finished 101 for 2, were under siege in the chase, not just from the bowlers but from a very chirpy Virat Kohli. Once, when he was running across from one end of the field to the other, he looked at Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen and said “Relax guys. I can hear your heartbeat.”So began a remarkably combative last 29.4 overs of play and it peaked in the 21st.R Ashwin to Elgar. He bowls a beautiful offbreak. Tossed up from around the wicket, drifting in late, drifting in big. The left-hander prepares to nudge the ball into the leg side. He brings down a straight bat. But this drift. It is too much. It takes the ball clean past the inside edge and hits him on the front pad.Umpire Marais Erasmus puts the finger up immediately. But ball-tracking told a different story. Bouncing over leg stump.Ashwin was completely unimpressed. “Find better ways to win, SuperSport,” he said. Kohli was livid. He took an almighty kick at the turf, then walked right up to the stump mic and said, “focus on your team as well while they shine the ball, eh? Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.” KL Rahul chimed in with “whole country playing against 11 guys”.Rishabh Pant celebrates his hundred•Getty Images

India were rage-mode. Elgar did so very well to resist them but he couldn’t hold out. The South African captain fell off what turned out to be the last ball of the day. So now the game is in the hands of a virtual rookie. Petersen is four Tests old. He has earned praise from all corners – and he batted befitting all of it – making 48 unbeaten runs. The longer he lasts in the middle tomorrow the better it will be for his side. After all, they are almost halfway to the target with eight wickets still in hand.Long before all this tension though, there was nothing but magic. Magic from a man named Pant.Watching him on the field really takes you back to your childhood, back when you were running around with your brothers and your sisters and your best friends, all in search of the nearest empty piece of land to play a little bit of cricket. The driveway at home. The hallway at school. Anywhere you can show off. Be silly. And bring joy.Bring joy to the most important people in your life simply by doing something you love.As adults, we grow out of that phase. Rishabh, it seems, just knows better. There was a moment, as he was nearing his century, when he chased one that was so far wide of off stump that he began to overbalance. But, instead of stopping himself and preparing to face the next ball, he sort of went with the flow and pretend ran a double on a pretend pitch between point and the stumps at the keeper’s end.Raucous laughter rang out in response. Most of it would have been from the Indian dressing room but can you really rule out a smile from a South African face? After all, when he attempted a reverse scoop off the 6’8″ Marco Jansen and failed to connect, Hashim Amla on the broadcast said, “I would have loved to have seen that come off.”Keegan Petersen scored at a brisk pace•Getty Images

This is Rishabh Pant. He is such a thrillingly free spirit that everyone just falls in love with him.Entertaining the masses is one thing. As part of a high-performing sports team, he is also committed to winning and to do that at Newlands he needed to do more than just have a whack.Pant walked out after two quick wickets – Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane undone by extra bounce. And within seven balls he was smelling leather. Kagiso Rabada decided to test him with the short ball but Pant was ready. He rocked back and pulled South Africa’s pace ace to the square leg boundary to get off the mark. There were other shots like that too. Shots straight out of a dream. 34th over. A down the track slap off Duanne Olivier that was all kinds of impudent. 48th over. A one-handed slog sweep. For six. 60th over. A flay over point that didn’t fetch a single run but will still make the highlights because he went so hard at it that he lost the grip on his bat and it went flying.Pant defied logic for every second he was out there. If you want any more evidence of that, look down the scorecard, look for the next best score.Kohli 29 off 143.That was a superb innings as well. He may not have the runs to show for it but his presence in the middle prevented the team from collapsing. Solid doesn’t come close to describing the India captain at the crease. But this should: he played a false shot once every 12 balls in a match where there was one every six balls.Kohli wasn’t just good. He was twice as good as everybody else.

'He’s not got any sense of danger' – Kobbie Mainoo warned he is missing one aspect of his game as Graeme Souness names surprising England youngster with 'better understanding' than Man Utd star

Days after United boss Ruben Amorim revealed that Mainoo was "struggling a lot defending as a midfielder", Liverpool legend Souness has made a similar observation. He said the Red Devils man does not have "any sense of danger" in a defensive midfield role and Crystal Palace ace and England team-mate Adam Wharton is a better operator there.

    WHAT GRAEME SOUNESS SAID

He said in his column: "It didn’t surprise me to hear Ruben Amorim say that he felt Kobbie Mainoo was not ‘comfortable’ with the defensive side of his midfield game. I said on these pages last June that of the young crop of England midfield players, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton had a far better understanding of the defensive duties in that role than Mainoo. Mainoo catches the eye because he’s so good on the ball, drifts around, pops up on the left and the right, but he’s not got any sense of danger yet, and empties the midfield area too readily."

He added: "Mainoo doesn’t yet understand all the disciplines of the position but he’s only 19. He can develop, with the proper guidance and instruction."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mainoo is one of the latest academy gems United have at their disposal but it is becoming increasingly clear that defending is not his strong suit. The 19-year-old could improve that part of his game but his other abilities should not be overlooked. Wharton, however, could be England's first-choice defensive midfielder for years to come.
