Markram's reply to Rizwan's maiden century gives South Africa hope in 370 chase

If the visitors manage to pull it off, it will be the highest successful chase in Pakistan

Firdose Moonda07-Feb-2021Stumps On a day when West Indies completed the highest successful chase in the subcontinent to win the first Test against Bangladesh, South Africa put themselves in a position to pull off the best effort by a visiting team in Pakistan. Set 370 to win the Rawalpindi Test, South Africa finished the day 242 runs behind, with nine wickets in hand and set batsmen at the crease.Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen’s second-wicket partnership is worth 92 and demonstrated the kind of application South Africa’s line-up have lacked for large parts of the series so far. Although the surface has become easier to bat on, with little sign of the turn that was noticeable on the first day, and no reverse swing yet, both batsmen made noticeable adjustments to their technique. Markram’s improved footwork against spinners saw him record his second half-century of the tour while van der Dussen countered the low bounce with a substantial stride forward stride and by playing the ball close to the body as often as possible. He is two short of his own second fifty of the series. The pair came together after Dean Elgar, whose first 16 runs came from four boundaries, got carried away by his aggressive approach and chased a wide Shaheen Shah Afridi delivery only to edge to Mohammad Rizwan. Television cameras caught Elgar flinging his bat in frustration once he had reached the dressing room.At that stage, Markram had only just found his rhythm after seeing off 22 dot balls, 18 from Afridi, before taking on the spin. In one over, Markram took 14 runs off Nauman Ali and survived a review for lbw after UltraEdge showed he had inside-edged the ball onto his front pad. Markram continued to play Nauman and later Yasir Shah with confidence but also pounced on loose spells from Hasan Ali, who struggled to find the right length. Markram’s fifty came off 71 balls, at better than a run-a-ball after his initial scoreless vigil.Van der Dussen had a little more trouble against Nauman and was twice beaten by flighted deliveries outside off but quickly adjusted to playing the ball as close to the body as possible. He punished Faheem Ashraf for poor lines, leaving Babar Azam with no option but to go back to Afridi and the spinners, neither of whom were able to make a breakthrough.Pakistan may still feel they have enough, both because the highest successful chase in the country is Sri Lanka’s 220 at the same venue 21 years ago and because South Africa have not successfully chased a total over 200 in almost a decade. The last time they achieved the feat was when they scored 236 for 2 to beat Australia in Cape Town in 2011. Since then, South Africa have been set targets of over 200 on 20 occasions, and have lost 17 of those matches , including six in the subcontinent. But this Pindi surface has not deteriorated enough to make it unplayable and, as Pakistan showed in the third innings, run-scoring remains free-flowing. Rizwan was the most fluent of the home batsmen as he scored his first Test century and led a lower-order fightback. Pakistan’s last five pairs put on 222 runs including 53 between Rizwan and Yasir and 97 between Rizwan and Nauman, and continued the trend of the home side getting valuable rearguard contributions. At the same time, their stubborn resistance told the story of the problems South Africa have encountered in dismissing the tail throughout the series. In Karachi, Pakistan’s last five stands were worth 252 in the first innings, setting up a lead that laid the foundation for the win.Despite that, South Africa took pride from how they controlled the run-rate. Even that failed them in the post-lunch session in Rawalpindi. They conceded 81 runs in 17 overs, at a rate of 4.76 as Rizwan and Nauman took advantage of a weary attack. There was some consolation for South Africa’s bowlers. George Linde, bowling with heavy strapping around his lacerated left little finger, took his first five-for, joining Nortje and Hasan as the bowlers who have prospered on this pitch.South Africa’s spinners fared better than their seamers overall with Keshav Maharaj finishing with three wickets. Kagiso Rabada only bowled seven overs on the fourth day, while Nortje’s bouncers were not enough to unsettled Rizwan, who was strong on the back foot and the pull. Since his comeback in November last year, Rizwan has played 12 Tests and scored six fifties and a hundred and he averages a shave under 45.

Lovelace 2.0: Rangers hold talks to sign exciting teen "goalscorer"

Glasgow Rangers head of recruitment Nils Koppen has been hard at work to improve the playing squad after the disappointing end to the 2023/24 campaign.

In May, the Light Blues missed out on the Scottish Premiership title, finishing second, and were then beaten by their closest rivals in the SFA Cup final.

That meant that Philippe Clement ended his first year at Ibrox with one trophy, the League Cup, under his belt and the Belgian boss could be hoping for more pieces of silverware next season.

Oscar Cortes, Jefte, Connor Barron, and Clinton Nsiala have already been signed to bolster the ranks, whilst the club are also reportedly trying to sign Yusuf Kabadayi from Bayern Munich and are closing in on forward Hamza Igamane for £1.5m.

All of those players are aged 21 or under and this illustrates the transfer strategy that Koppen and Clement have put in place this summer, as they look for young players with the potential to improve.

With this in mind, it makes sense that the Scottish giants have now been linked with an interest in an exciting young marksman from England.

Rangers have held talks to sign 18-year-old starlet

According to Secret Scout on X, the Light Blues are among a clutch of clubs keen on a deal to sign Middlesbrough centre-forward Ajay Matthews this summer.

The report claims that a number of teams are interested in snapping him up from the English Championship side, including the Scottish giants.

It states that the 18-year-old starlet looks set to leave Michael Carrick's squad this summer and that has opened the door for Rangers, or another club, to swoop in for him.

Middlesbrough managerMichaelCarrick

Celtic, Newcastle United, Brentford, Southampton, and Brighton & Hove Albion are the other sides in the running to secure a deal for the academy marksman.

Rangers, alongside the other clubs mentioned, have held talks to sign the teenage sensation, with Koppen seemingly keen to bring him over to Ibrox this summer.

The Secret Scout also stated that the teams in the running, including the Gers, are hopeful that they can convince him to make a move away from Teeside, with Glasgow a possible destination for him.

Koppen has already held talks over a potential deal for the attacker and the Belgian chief must now work hard to beat off competition from the likes of Celtic, Newcastle, and Southampton, as the Boro youngster could be Zak Lovelace 2.0 for the Light Blues.

Rangers played a blinder with Zak Lovelace

In the summer of 2022, Rangers swooped in to sign 16-year-old striker Lovelace from English Championship side Millwall after he had rejected a new contract with the Lions.

Despite his young age, the versatile attacker had already played five times in the second tier for their first-team, which spoke to how highly he was rated by them.

The teenage talent was brought in to initially play for the B team and immediately proved himself to be a fantastic talent with the potential to emerge as a first-team option.

As you can see in the table above, Lovelace hit the ground running at academy level for the Scottish giants with his ability to score and create goals.

The former Millwall star operated through the middle as a centre-forward and on either flank as a winger yet still managed to remain consistent in his end product, with 18 goals and ten assists in 35 matches.

Rangers forward Zak Lovelace.

Michael Beale rewarded him with a first-team debut in a 3-0 win against Celtic in May of last year and the teenage whiz made a further two appearances in the Premiership during the first half of last season.

Unfortunately, a hamstring injury kept him out from October 2023 to February 2024 and then March 2024 to present, which derailed his progress at Ibrox.

Clement will now be hoping that the young talent will return from injury sooner rather than later to continue his impressive progress and eventually emerge as a regular first-team option for him, with his fantastic ability in front of goal.

Rangers could now land another version of Lovelace by dipping into the English academy market once again to sign Matthews from Middlesbrough.

Why Rangers should sign Ajay Matthews

The great thing about signings like this is that they do not cost multi-millions and there is a lower risk attached than bringing players straight into the first-team.

Rangers can afford to gamble on talented prospects in the hope that one or two out of a batch of recruits for the academy end up making it in the senior squad, which would then save Koppen and his team millions on an immediate first-team signing in that position.

Finding a consistent goalscorer at senior level is a tough ask and that is why snapping Matthews up from Middlesbrough as a young talent is a gamble worth taking for the Gers, when you consider his record at youth level.

Per Fabrizio Romano, the 18-year-old starlet racked up a staggering 16 goals in 17 starts for Boro at academy level throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Carrick claimed that the teenage dynamo proved himself as a "goalscorer" during the season and handed the talent two first-team appearances in the Championship, against Leeds United and Cardiff City.

As you can see in the table above, nine of his aforementioned 16 goals came at league level for the academy and he showcased his ability to provide creativity as well as a goal threat.

The Rangers target produced an eye-catching 14 direct goal contributions in 19 outings, which shows that he has the potential to make a big impact in the final third on a consistent basis.

However, like Lovelace, he is yet to consistently prove himself at first-team level and that is why Matthews would initially come in to lead the line for the B team, with a view to breaking into Clement's side in the future.

Samit Patel is set to complete 20 years as a Nottinghamshire player after signing a two-year contract extension at the club, primarily for white-ball cricket.Patel, who made his first-class debut for Notts as a 17-year-old in 2002, was a key part of the club’s T20 Blast triumph this season, hitting a vital 28 not out from No. 8 in the quarter-final against Leicestershire before returning 2 for 42 in six overs across the semi-final and final. While he remains available for selection in red-ball cricket, Patel said that focusing on his limited-overs skills would benefit both the club and his longevity.”I’m not retiring from playing with the red ball, and I’ll always be there for Notts in first-class cricket if they need me,” Patel said. “However, Matt Carter and Liam Patterson-White are spin bowlers with their careers ahead of them, and we have a talented batting line-up with loads of potential too, so I firmly believe the club needs to go down that route in the red-ball game.”In limited-overs cricket, I believe we have a team that can be there or thereabouts for years to come. I know I have a big part to play in that and winning more trophies is the ultimate aim.”ALSO READ: County ins and outs, 2020-21Patel, who played six Tests and 54 limited-overs games in his England career, has become a regular feature on the worldwide T20 circuit in recent years, and is currently playing for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League playoffs before heading to the Lanka Premier League. He was surprisingly overlooked in the selection process for the Hundred last year, and will hope to press his case ahead of January’s draft.”Samit believes very strongly that we’ll benefit as a limited-overs team from him becoming a white-ball specialist – both in terms of the longevity of his career and with the specific focus it will bring to his preparation,” Peter Moores, Notts’ head coach, said.”The terms of this contract are reflective of Samit’s wishes in that regard. He’s earned the right over many years, and in particular with the way he went about his cricket last season, to make that decision and for us to respect it.”The club also confirmed that Harry Gurney has signed another white-ball deal for 2021 after missing the T20 Blast this summer through a shoulder injury, which also ruled him out of the IPL. Having joined from Leicestershire in 2012, Gurney will complete a decade as a Notts player next summer.”2020 has ended up being a bit of an enforced sabbatical for me,” Gurney said, “but I feel rested, refreshed and ready to power through the next phase of my rehab to get ready for 2021.”Toby Pettman, a beanpole Oxford University seamer, has also been offered professional terms for 2021 after impressing bowling coach Kevin Shine at an MCCU open day.

Rashford has faced severe criticism for his underwhelming performances for United in recent seasons and most recently former Three Lions assistant coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink claimed that football might not be the player's 'main priority'.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Now Cole has opened up about the 26-year-old's latest struggles with form. The ex-Red Devils star did not doubt Rashford's potential but he said that he hopes the United star does not regret taking certain decisions looking back at his career after he retires. The forward has appeared in 11 matches in the ongoing season where he scored four times and provided two assists.

WHAT ANDY COLE SAID

Speaking to Betfred, Cole said, "Possibly. Marcus is an interesting kid because, against Porto in the first half, I thought he was Manchester United’s best player. He played well, got his goal and set another up. He was very, very lively and doing what he does best. Against Aston Villa, he had a few good runs but on the flipside of that, he could have been sent off due to two silly challenges. The manager did the right thing by taking him off and he was doing it for the best of the team.

"I heard that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said last week that he was unsure whether football is Marcus’ top priority. I was a bit taken aback by it because Jimmy’s worked with England and people only say certain things like that when they’ve seen things going on. I don’t know, but I just hope Marcus doesn’t look back on his career wishing he should have done things differently because he has everything in front of him."

Erik ten Hag's side have failed to secure a win in their last five outings across all competitions. They will aim to get back to winning ways after the international break as they face Brentford in the Premier League on October 19.

Spurs eyeing "unstoppable" ÂŁ60m Kulusevski & Richarlison upgrade

The first transfer window Ange Postecoglou had in charge at Tottenham Hotspur saw him spend an extraordinary £212.3m, to bring four prominent first-team players to the club, with the aim of helping them secure European football once again. That included the permanent captures of Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro.

Spurs added some quality in attacking areas to their squad last summer, by bringing in Brennan Johnson and James Maddison to the club. Johnson joined in a deadline day deal from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m, a record sale for the East Midlands side. They brought Maddison into the club from Forest’s rivals, Leicester City, for a £40m fee.

james-maddison-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-crystal-palace-postecoglou-ebere-eze

At the other end of the pitch, Spurs also strengthened in order to make them more defensively secure. The signing of Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli became the direct replacement for Hugo Lloris for £17.2m, and Micky van de Ven was brought in from Wolfsburg for £43m and has enjoyed a stellar season.

This summer, Postecoglou has requested three signings to help improve his squad, according to James Olley of ESPN. This summer will also see several players leave Spurs in order to get deals over the line.

In particular, there will likely be some outgoings which will make room for a big Premier League attacker to join the club.

Spurs looking to sign Premier League winger

The player in question here is Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portugal winger Pedro Neto. Despite a tough season with injuries, Neto has put up some impressive numbers and is now subject to interest from Spurs and other Premier League clubs.

According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, Wolves could sell Neto in a £60m deal, although Spurs are not thought to be the only side interested. Crook believes Newcastle United, Premier League champions Manchester City and Spurs North London rivals Arsenal are also interested in signing the 24-year-old.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

This story comes just days after Wolves manager Gary O’Neil suggested that his side must sell several players to fund their transfer dealings this summer. In a recent interview, O’Neil explained that Wolves “won't be blessed with resources as in money to spend”, although their players currently out on loan “can come back and help us or we will be able to sell some”.

This certainly opened the door to a potential departure for Neto, and he could well fetch a commanding fee which O’Neil can reinvest into his side.

How Neto would fit in at Spurs

Despite his aforementioned injury issues, having missed 20 games this season with a hamstring injury, the winger's impressive record is certainly an attractive prospect for Spurs. In 20 Premier League games this season, the 24-year-old has scored twice and registered nine assists. On top of that, he has one goal and two assists in four FA Cup appearances.

What makes this even better is the fact that Neto has played just 1,519 minutes in the Premier League. In total, that equates to just 16 90 minutes, meaning he has 11 goal involvements in that time.

Signing Neto would add a great deal of depth to Spurs’ wide options. The Portugal international can play right across the attack, having played in four different positions just this season for Wolves. It creates interesting competition with the likes of Richarlison and Kulusevski, whom he has registered more assists than.

However, he would likely play on the right wing predominantly, given Spurs’ depth on the left-hand side includes Johnson, and their captain Son Heung-min can also play there if they recruit a striker this summer. Spurs’ first choice on that side is currently the Sweden international Kulusevski, but that could certainly change with the signing of Neto.

In signing the dynamic Wolves man, you get a very different winger to the former Juventus star, and also Richarlison, who has been known to play on the wing at times under Postecoglou, too. Neto is one of the most direct players in the Premier League, who likes to pick the ball up and drive at a full-back, whereas Kulusevski is more safe in his approach, looking to keep the ball and wait for an opening.

Indeed, this is reflected in their respective Fbref numbers. Statistically, Neto is one of the best dribblers in European football this season. He averages 5.83 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 5% of wingers in Europe, 3.86 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 3%, and 2.49 carries into the penalty box per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 11%.

In contrast, as per Fbref, Kulusevski averages just 4.9 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 21%, 2.01 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, ranking him in as low as the 38th percentile, and 2.61 carries into the penalty box per 90 minutes, which he ranks higher in than Neto, in the top 9%.

Where Neto struggles compared to Kulusevski is in his progressive passing. The Portugal international averages just 3.21 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the 34th percentile, 1.37 final third passes per 90 minutes, placing him in the 27th percentile, and 1.72 passes into the penalty box per 90 minutes, placing him in the 67th percentile. With that being said, he does average 2.26 key passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 20%.

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski celebrates

Comparatively, the Swede averages 4.68 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 29%, 1.75 final third passes per 90 minutes, ranking him in the 46th percentile, and 2.39 passes into the penalty box per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 6%. His 2.13 key passes per 90 minutes are worse than Neto's, and it ranks him in the top 25%.

There is no doubt Neto adds a very different dynamic to this Spurs attack. He is a profile they lack and has great output, too. He was described as “unstoppable” by one football analyst on X, and, as the numbers reflect, it is clear to see why.

For the £60m fee Wolves are rumoured to want for their talismanic winger, it could well be an astute piece of business from Postecoglou’s side, and it would allow them to supplement their squad with a deadly two-way winger.

Spurs "looking at" signing ÂŁ30m Werner upgrade who was at Chelsea

The gifted winger could be the perfect replacement for the German.

Phil Simmons faces calls for sacking after leaving lockdown to attend funeral

The president of the Barbados Cricket Association has called for the “immediate removal” of Phil Simmons as head coach of West Indies.Conde’ Riley, who is also on the board of directors of Cricket West Indies (CWI), has described Simmons’ decision to attend a family funeral as “inconsiderate and reckless” and claimed it has “endangered the lives” of the rest of the touring party.Simmons, who is based in the UK, was allowed to leave the West Indies training base to attend the funeral of his father-in-law at the end of last week. As a consequence, he was obliged to go into quarantine in the team hotel upon his return. In an email to board members Riley wrote: “I just heard on the radio that our head coach Mr Phil Simmons attended a funeral recently and is now being quarantined as a result. If this is true I am calling for his immediate removal as head coach.”I am being bombarded by concerned parents and members of the BCA. This behaviour is inconsiderate and reckless. It endangers the lives of those 25 young men in the UK and in fact the entire management team and cannot be tolerated.”The English press will have a feast on his judgement and I suggest we act swiftly.”Nine members of West Indies’ 14-man Test squad are from Barbados, as well as four of the squad’s 11 reserve players. Three further players – Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul and Darren Bravo – opted out of selection prior to the series due to their concerns about the pandemic.ALSO READ: Blackwood keen to prove himself against England attackA statement from CWI at the time confirmed that Simmons had gained permission to attend the funeral ahead of the tour.”The entire process of his exit and re-entry to the bio-secure location was approved and managed by the medical teams of the CWI and the ECB and strictly followed protocols set up prior to the tour which addressed such scenarios,” the statement said.”Following his return, Simmons has been in self-isolation away from other members of the squad, exactly as had always been planned. He has so far undergone two Covid-19 tests since Friday – both of which came back negative. He will have another test on Wednesday before he will re-join the squad as they prepare for the three-match #RaiseTheBat Series against England.”Simmons’ movements have been barely noted in the UK press as of now. Joe Root, the England captain, has been given similar dispensation to leave the training bubble to attend the birth of his second child. He will miss the first Test as a consequence.Riley’s email comes a week before West Indies begin the three-Test series in England with the first match scheduled from July 8 in Southampton. West Indies hold the Wisden Trophy after their 2-1 win at home last year, but have not won a Test series in England since 1988.There is wider context behind this. In 2019 Ricky Skerritt ended Dave Cameron’s six-year reign as CWI president, winning the elections by an 8-4 margin with voting conducted through a secret ballot. However, the BCA was one of the boards to nominate Cameron. Cameron now also wants to contest for the ICC chairman’s position, which is up for grabs after incumbent Shashank Manohar recently said he would not be standing for another term. Although the CWI is yet to take a formal stance on whether to support Cameron’s nomination, on Tuesday Riley told the , hosted on Starcom Network, a Barbados-based radio station, that he would “certainly” support the Jamaican. The relationship between Cameron and Skerritt’s administration has been tense, especially of late. Last month, Cameron threatened legal action against the board unless they handed over a copy to him of an audit which had been critical of Cameron’s time in office.Simmons was also sacked as head coach by the board during Cameron’s time as president, and was reappointed to the same post by Skerritt. The coach subsequently won a legal case for unfair dismissal against CWI and received a significant payout.

Lionesses star Keira Walsh keen on WSL return as Arsenal and Chelsea circle – but any deal with Barcelona before transfer deadline day will be difficult

Lionesses star Keira Walsh is keen on a return to England but it's unclear if Arsenal or Chelsea could strike a deal with Barcelona this summer.

Walsh into final year of Barcelona contractLionesses star wants WSL returnArsenal and Chelsea could offer thatWHAT HAPPENED?

Walsh is into the final year of the contract that she signed at Barcelona in the summer of 2022, when the club made her the most expensive player in women's football history at the time. As a result, there has been speculation around her future throughout this summer and that is only continuing as Friday's transfer deadline for the Women's Super League approaches.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The England star has been superb for Barcelona since joining the club, helping them to win another Champions League title earlier this year. She is a crucial player in midfield and so to sell her at any point would leave the Catalans light in the middle of the park, but especially now, with so little time to find a replacement for her before the transfer window closes.

WHAT THE REPORT SAID

As such, Barca do not want to let Walsh go, despite knowing that the player will not renew her expiring contract in the next 12 months. That's according to , with journalist Emma Sanders providing an update on the Lionesses star on Thursday.

"Keira Walsh has a year remaining on her contract at Barcelona and has already informed the club she does not intend to extend because she is keen to return home for personal reasons," the report says. "That means Barca will either lose her on a free in 12 months' time or they could cash in on her this summer with several clubs interested.

"Arsenal have a longstanding interest, while Chelsea are in the market for a midfielder and would have the funds. The problem is that Barcelona do not want to sell. They are not prepared to name a price – though there's a general consensus that it would have to be a world-record fee should they consider any offer. We're at a bit of a stand-off, basically."

Further complicating any push for a transfer from Arsenal and Chelsea is the fact that Barcelona have a league fixture against Real Sociedad on Friday night, just a few hours before the WSL transfer deadline passes.

Palace can repeat Wharton blinder by signing ÂŁ20m gem with "Eze’s dynamism"

It's a brilliant time to be a Crystal Palace fan at the moment, as new boss Oliver Glasner has overseen an incredibly dramatic transformation and led them to five wins out of their last six Premier League games.

The Austrian Eagles haven't just been scraping through, either. Earlier this month, they blew Manchester United away 4-0, and just a couple of weeks before, they dispatched West Ham United 5-2.

The south Londoners look a totally different proposition today than they did at the start of the season, and while that is in large part down to the manager, it's also thanks to the players, including winter arrival Adam Wharton.

And in good news for fans, based on recent reports, the club could be about to repeat the same move that landed them the Englishman once again in the summer.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to a report earlier this week from journalist Bobby Manzi, Crystal Palace are currently "monitoring Norwich City's Gabriel Sara" ahead of the summer transfer window.

Norwich midfielder Gabriel Sara.

The Canaries, understandably keen to keep a hold of one of their key men, will "demand a fee in excess of £20 million," and that's just to open discussions.

It would undoubtedly represent a high-risk investment in a player unproven at the top level from the south Londoners.

Still, based on their previous experience buying players from the Championship, it might be an investment worth making.

Palace could repeat their Wharton trick

So if fans, or even the board, are feeling slightly hesitant about splashing the cash on a player from the Championship, they need not look any further than their previous purchase from the division, Wharton, as an example of when it can work.

Described as "one of the most exciting U21s in England" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 20-year-old's impact at Selhurst Park over the last few months has been remarkable, and it's shown in his underlying numbers.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the former Blackburn Rovers ace sits in the top 4% of midfielders for tackles, the top 8% for assists, the top 11% for expected assists, the top 12% for interceptions, and the top 23% for clearances, all per 90.

He has understandably left an impression on Glasner, who claimed his "decision-making, his pre-orientation, and his solutions with one or two touches are amazing" and that he "will have a fantastic career."

So, with the Eagles having pedigree when it comes to plucking out talent from the second division, what could Sara bring to Selhurst Park next season?

Well, the Brazilian midfielder has an eye for a goal and an assist while also possessing "[Eberechi] Eze's dynamism and off the ball tenacity", per data analyst Ben Mattinson – a pleasing comparison considering Eze has contributed 14 goals and assists in 2023/24 in all competitions.

In 53 first-team appearances this season, the 24-year-old has scored 14 goals and provided 13 assists, meaning that he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.96 games.

Ultimately, while there is always going to be an element of risk with buying players from the Championship, Palace can rely on their experience in the market to make the right call, and based on his performances this season, signing Sara would be the right call.

Kane Williamson set to return as New Zealand eye 3-0 sweep

Big picture

As if injuries to Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry weren’t enough, New Zealand were hampered by absence of Scott Kuggleijn and Mitchell Santner for the second ODI. Tim Southee, too, battled an illness while Ish Sodhi had been released to play a four-dayer against India A in Lincoln.Southee soldiered on and meticulously took down India captain Virat Kohli, but had to leave the field after finishing his ten overs. So depleted were New Zealand that they had to call their assistant coach Luke Ronchi as a substitute fielder. Yet, they dug deep enough to overcome a batting collapse and a late scare from Ravindra Jadeja to sew up the series. But problems – even outside fitness reasons – persist. Ross Taylor has fired in both the ODIs, but the rest of the middle-order has faltered. Williamson’s return at Bay Oval, his home ground, could remedy some of those issues. He had a proper workout on the eve of the game, and is set to resume his mouth-watering tussle against Jasprit Bumrah. Santner and Kuggleijn are also coming along well, according to bowling coach Shane Jurgensen, while Sodhi has flown back to Mount Maunganui and rejoined the squad along with fast bowler Blair Tickner. After India had conceded the series in Auckland, Kohli reckoned that the team management might use this dead rubber to test out their bench. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who hasn’t played a single match so far on tour, might get a look-in on Tuesday. Will there be some room in the middle order for Manish Pandey too? Allrounder Shivam Dube is also among India’s reserves and hasn’t played in the team’s last nine ODIs.

In the spotlight

Colin de Grandhomme din’t bowl in two of the three T20Is he played, but has been pretty tidy with the ball in the two ODIs. After removing Prithvi Shaw with an outswinger in the first game, he tricked KL Rahul into cutting a ball that was neither short or wide enough for the shot. His batting form, though, has cooled off and he has floated down the order as the hosts have looked to maintain a left-right combination. Can he land the mighty blows with the bat on Tuesday? There has been plenty of scrutiny over Kedar Jadhav‘s role in the current set-up. The 34-year old has played some charming cameos while coming in with just a few deliveries left, but has bowled all of one over with the ball since the World Cup. Jadhav has one more opportunity in Mount Maunganui before the new selection panel picks the squad for the three-match ODI series at home against South Africa in March.

Team news

Pitch and conditions

The Bay Oval rolled out a fairly slow track the last time these two sides met in an ODI at this venue in 2019. The T20I game that the Bay Oval had hosted last week was also similarly slow and provided some assistance to the bowlers. The weather is likely to be nice and pleasant for the duration of the match.

Stats and trivia

  • The last time India were whitewashed in a bilateral ODI series of three or more matches was in 1997 when they lost 3-0 in Sri Lanka.*
  • India have played two ODIs at this venue and have won both.
  • Henry Nicholls has made 315 runs in 10 ODI innings as an opener at an average of 35 and strike rate of 70. His last three scores at the top read: 41, 78 and 55.

Quotes

“The T20 series didn’t go according to plan, but we knew we weren’t too far off. We’ve played some good cricket in the one-dayers…although we’re missing a couple of guys, as a whole, the one-day side has been tracking pretty good.”
“I think Taylor’s batting really well. Once he’s set he can play on the leg side like he’s a God. We have to be precise bowling to him.”

Arsenal could sign their answer to Kane in "insane" ÂŁ64m Jesus upgrade

It's been a decent week for Arsenal in the Premier League. Their draw away to Manchester City and wins at home to Luton Town have kept them within touching distance of league leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta's side will need to win most, if not all, of their remaining games to lift the title this season, but with their goalscoring form since the turn of the year, that's entirely possible.

However, at the start of next term, Gabriel Jesus could find his game time more limited; at least, that looks like it could be the case based on recent reports linking the club to a new number nine who has been compared to Harry Kane in the past.

Latest Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from the Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal are among several top fight clubs across Europe interested in signing Bologna's talented striker, Joshua Zirkzee, this summer.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

The report revealed that while AC Milan would likely be the forward's preferred destination, he would not be opposed to moving to the Premier League, with both the Gunners and Manchester United being the most interested English clubs.

Bayern Munich has a buyback clause worth around €40m – £34m – but it appears clear that neither party is interested in making that happen, so the Rossoblu will be able to name their price once the window opens.

The Italian report claims that Bologna considers Zirkzee's situation similar to Rasmus Hojlund's last summer. So, a price tag of around €75m has been discussed for clubs outside of Italy, which comes to about £64m. While that would be a serious investment from Arsenal, he might just be worth it.

How Zirkzee compares to Jesus

So the first and arguably most important thing to consider with any new potential striker signing is how their output compares to the forward they could replace, and in this case, Zirkzee comes out just ahead.

In his 31 games this season, the Dutchman has scored 11 goals and provided six assists, meaning he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.8 games. In contrast, Jesus' return of eight goals and five assists in 27 appearances means he averages a goal involvement every two games.

Okay, so what about their underlying numbers, then? Well, here it is a lot closer, and it's actually the Brazilian who just about edges it in the most relevant metrics for a starting number nine.

For example, the former Manchester City ace produces higher expected goals and assists figure, provides more actual assists, completes more progressive carries, and takes more shots on target per 90.

However, it isn't all that one-sided, as Bologna's "insane athlete", as data analyst Ben Mattinson described him, scores more goals, completes more progressive passes, and has a better conversion rate from his shots on target, all per 90.

Moreover, while it seems from the surface that Jesus is the better creator, Mattinson has argued that it is the ineffective attack of Bologna that is hampering the 6 foot 4 titan's creative numbers and that, in reality, his "his intelligence as a creator & facilitator is out of this world."

The respected analyst has drawn comparisons to former Tottenham Hotspur forward Kane, in that Zirkzee is burdened with the vast majority of the creative work in his current side and if he was placed in a team with goalscoring wingers and midfielders, his "productivity would sky-rocket."

The incredible talent would be the perfect competition for the Brazilian.

Ultimately, Arsenal have a great forward in Jesus, and he's likely to play some sort of role at the club for a number of years to come, but if they have the opportunity to sign Zirkzee this summer and bring him into a team with the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka out wide, they absolutely should.

Having seen the havoc that Kane – who boasts 213 Premier League goals – has wreaked across north London, snapping up a similar figure would be a welcome treat for the Emirates side.
