Buttler ton, Chahal-Ashwin spin strangle take Royals over the line

Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma half-centuries kept Mumbai in the game, but a poor spell against the spinners made them fall well short in the end

Shashank Kishore02-Apr-2022

Jos Buttler hit a 66-ball century, and Shimron Hetmyer provided the late impetus with a 14-ball 35•BCCI

Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin exhibited their mastery at a pivotal moment in the game to ensure Rajasthan Royals successfully defended a strong total, set up by Jos Buttler’s 68-ball century. This meant a second straight win for Royals and a second straight setback for Mumbai Indians, known to be slow starters. This was one Mumbai would be particularly disappointed with because they were in control of the chase going into the last six overs, after Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma hit half-centuries to leave them needing 65 off 36 with seven wickets in the shed. After that, though, they lost three wickets for two runs over the next seven balls against spin as the chase derailed.Kieron Pollard kept hopes alive by biffing a few blows at the close, but an excellent penultimate over from Prasidh Krishna that went for just ten – no boundary was conceded – left Mumbai needing 29 off the final over. Mumbai just found one more boundary as Pollard kept finding the fielders, before the match ended with Buttler fittingly taking a catch to remove him as Mumbai fell short by 23 runs. The Ashwin-Chahal strangle
It’s unlikely the two would have been given four overs between them in the last ten overs had this been a night game. The absence of dew meant Sanju Samson could play around with his spinners and hold them back, and he did so superbly by bowling Chahal with the long boundary to the leg side, forcing batters to hit him against the turn.First, Chahal had Tim David lbw with a slider that fizzed through the deck in the 16th over. Off the next ball, he had Daniel Sams with a fine cocktail of dip and drift. Sams heaved it to the leg side and was caught smartly by a back-pedalling Buttler from midwicket. Chahal nearly had a hat-trick; it wasn’t to be because M Ashwin was put down by wrong-footed Karun Nair at slip. But, by then, the pendulum had swung the Royals’ way.Only an over earlier, the 15th, R Ashwin had dismissed Tilak Varma for a 33-ball 61 a delivery after the 19-year-old had reverse-swept him for a six. Ashwin responded by slowing it down significantly and beating the batter in flight as the stumps were knocked back to elicit a roar and a send-off.1:40

Did Chahal make the big difference in the end?

The Kishan-Varma partnership
Mumbai lost Rohit Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh early, but Kishan and Varma ensured they kept up with the steep asking rate by playing sensibly, especially at the start of their stand. They showed the maturity in knowing they had the games to accelerate later, thereby giving them an opportunity to set up shop. From time to time, Varma picked the boundaries, and along the way also exhibited some languid stroke-making ability. The one off Navdeep Saini, which he punched on the up to clear long-off, was a stunner. At the other end, Kishan was at his industrious best. Running hard, using his feet to spin, bringing out calculated hits without being reckless, and in the process, raising a half-century before Varma got there. The pair went on to add 81 off just 54 balls to set Mumbai up before they unravelled quite uncharacteristically.Buttler fantastic, Buttler tactful
Much before the Royals spinners left their mark, Buttler provided a treat to the 15,000 fans who had turned up on a hot afternoon at the DY Patil Stadium. He was caught by a Jasprit Bumrah toe-crusher early on, but soon found his bearings when he launched into Basil Thampi for three sixes and two fours in the bowler’s only over, inside the powerplay.Where Bumrah and Tymal Mills hit hard lengths, Thampi went full and was clobbered, as Buttler cleared his front leg and made merry. This forced Rohit to dig deep into his bowling reserves early in the game, and having Pollard cover up the remainder of the overs through the innings.Buttler was impressive against spin, too. At one point, with deep point set for the reverse, he outfoxed Mumbai by backing away outside leg to loft M Ashwin repeatedly over cover. Then, when deep point was moved to sweeper cover, he brought out the reverse hits.Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional, returning 3 for 17•BCCI

He found some solid company in Samson, who got himself in quickly to make 30 before falling to Pollard. Shimron Hetmyer provided some late fireworks, laying into Pollard in his final over to disturb perfectly acceptable bowling figures until then: 3-0-20-1 ended up being 4-0-46-1.Bumrah’s comeback
A week after a nightmarish start to his season, where his figures read 3.2-0-43-0, Bumrah bounced back in style, as his second spell late in the innings prevented a late Royals surge. The three best overs for the Royals batters had totalled 73 runs. Bumrah’s four went for just 17, and brought the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Hetmyer and Buttler. Those of Hetmyer and Buttler in the death overs brought Mumbai right back in the game, as the Royals looked set to soar past 200, but finished with 194. At the break, Buttler said he wasn’t sure if it was a good score or not because of the short boundary on one side, but their spinners used the long boundaries to perfection to close out an impressive win.

Dawid Malan takes charge of successful Yorkshire chase

Yorkshire have endured a rancorous winter, with racism allegations to the fore, but victory in their opening match of the season will sustain the belief that on the field they are in good order. They overhauled a target of 211 in 60 overs with six wickets and 11.5 overs to spare, and have looked a happy and confident unit throughout. Their MD of cricket, Darren Gough and coach Ottis Gibson can take considerable credit for creating that mood of positivity, but ultimately matches are won on the field and until Dawid Malan took charge with a run-a-ball 65, the outcome felt as if it might be tighter. In an awkward chase, the sight of Malan at the crease conveys the impression that the grown-ups are in charge, and he fashioned the task with the professional air of a man who had done it countless times in the past, finally seeing off Gloucestershire’s challenge after four days of hard-fought cricket which showed the Championship in a favourable light. When Yorkshire enticed Malan from Middlesex in time for the 2020 season, they imagined they had made a perfect signing, a high-class player who possessed international pedigree, but whose England career – for all his ambition – might well be over. Best-laid plans and all that. Days later, Malan hit the fastest T20 hundred in England’s history, won an IPL contract with Punjab Kings and then regained his Test place. Two years later, with Malan now 34, Yorkshire will hope once again that he can be the ever-present, dominant figure in their middle order, not that it would be wise to tell him as much. He got on with the job unfussily and, by the time he was fourth out, slog sweeping to deep midwicket, Yorkshire’s confidence that they could chase down another 65 in 23 overs was cemented in.That was the perfect scenario for Harry Brook’s unbeaten half-century, a succession of blissful drives and two successive pulls against the left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar to reach his 50. Harry Duke even had the luxury of practicing some cheekie-chappie paddle scoops. They had Malan to thank for that.Harry Brook played two excellent innings•Getty Images

“Winning in the way we did is fantastic, especially under new leadership and new direction,” Malan said. “The pitch became a little bit dead, but because the boundaries were quite short on one side and there was a wind, we were able to target their quicker bowlers, which we did quite well. The original plan was to just bat and see where we were with 20 overs to go, but I managed to find a bit of momentum and just went with it. It’s up to us senior professionals to bring the younger ones along. We’ve seen that with Harry Brook in this game. He is learning how to play certain situations and is fast becoming a senior player himself.”Gloucestershire hung in there determinedly until the final session – showing the same resolve as in their nail-biting draw against Northants last week. But gnawing away at their self-belief would be the knowledge that counties like to chase at Bristol, where the pitches can encourage bowlers on the opening day but which become overly placid, lacking pace and turn, in the later stages of the match. Lancashire’s Kyle Jarvis and Imran Tahir, for Derbyshire, are rare examples of bowlers who has pulled off a match-winning fourth-innings display on this ground in the past decade.Gloucestershire had little leeway if they were to avoid defeat, but their challenge wilted markedly after tea. They will find optimism, however, as far as their bowling attack is concerned, in the six wickets in the match for Ajeet Singh Dale, who looked lively throughout.Yorkshire’s chase was cagey until tea, 53 on the card for the loss of Adam Lyth and the debutant, James Wharton, and only two boundaries managed in 23 overs. Lyth fell at fine leg, hooking Matt Taylor from well outside off stump when a cut would have been a better option. Wharton, who might have fallen to Taylor from the first three balls he faced, was bowled through the gate by Singh Dale.A wearing fourth-day pitch, with turn for Gohar, would have made Yorkshire’s chase more challenging, and his immediate introduction into the attack when Malan came to the crease appeared to be an intended match-up, but there was no purchase to be had. Malan soon had the upper hand. George Hill, a patient soul, was also showing signs of opening up when he overbalanced and clipped a half-volley from Singh Dale to midwicket.Gohar exhaled in disbelief when Malan lobbed one over his head, but it was to be his last scoring shot. The next ball, he slog-swept Gohar to the longest boundary where Ryan Higgins, on the line and at full stretch, calmly knocked the ball up to complete the catch at the second attempt.Related

  • James Bracey rediscovers his focus but Yorkshire eye path to victory

  • Ben Compton scores twin tons in extraordinary losing cause for Kent

Gloucestershire, six down for 253 overnight, and the second new ball only four overs old, resisted gamely until the sixth over after lunch, adding another 106 runs. Another half hour might have been enough. The dominant figure was again James Bracey, who resumed on 112 and who was last out for a career-best 177, a valiant but ultimately unavailing innings spanning more than seven-and-a-half hours, when he drove Steve Patterson to short extra. Patterson is 38 now, one of the slowest third seamers around, not much above 70mph, but he bowled with great nous and control for his 3 for 43.What does this mammoth effort say about Bracey’s suitability for England? There is no doubt that he is in form, as hundreds in the first two matches of the season testify. He is one of the most disciplined top-order batters around and such attributes among top-level players are in short supply. But slow county surfaces such as these can only reveal so much and do not provide ideal preparation for a Test career; in that, Bristol is no different to many squares up and down the country. Most disconcertingly perhaps is that Bracey was struck on the helmet for a second time by the one bowler in the match with true pace, Haris Rauf. Saturday’s blow was full-on when he failed to hook. On this occasion, he ducked, calmly enough but not quite low enough and the ball skimmed the top of his helmet. As he tired, Rauf caused him more trouble than most. Just before the physios came on with his third helmet of the match, he survived a vociferous appeal for a catch at the wicket – the ball brushing his trouser pocket – and almost chipped up a catch down the leg-side off his hip, the ball falling just short of a scrambling wicketkeeper. Two emphatic pulled sixes against Rauf in a calculated final assault will have been confidence-restoring.Rauf gives Yorkshire’s attack an extra dimension. He has scant first-class experience, but he maintained an impressive pace and, at the very least, could mop up a few tails in quick succession before his stint comes to an end.

He’s on par with Larsen: Wolves flop looks like "different player" on loan

Raul Jimenez is undoubtedly one of the finest Wolverhampton Wanderers players in the Premier League era. The Mexican centre-forward was deadly for the Old Gold and is their all-time top goalscorer in the top flight since 1992 when the Premier League began with 41 goals.

In total, the one-time Benfica star scored 57 goals for the club in 166 games. His form was especially good before his terrible head injury against Arsenal which took him eight months to recover from. At his current club Fulham, he is beginning to look close to his best again.

The Midlands club have never really managed to replace him since his departure, and whilst Matheus Cunha has supplemented the number of goals he scored, he is more of a second striker.

That said, summer signing Jorgen Strand Larsen is someone who has been impressive this season in front of goal.

Strand Larsen’s season so far

Wolves brought Strand Larsen in from Celta Vigo in the summer, signing him on a loan deal with the obligation to buy if there are certain conditions met. He will cost the Old Gold £23m if he does make a permanent move.

So far, he has impressed in a Wolves shirt. The centre-forward has played 13 times for the club, scoring four goals and grabbing three assists. He has been fairly consistent so far. The longest he has gone this term without a goal involvement is two games. It has been a good start to life in the Midlands.

Equally, the Norweigan centre-forward is currently second on the list of most goal involvements for the Old Gold this season. Cunha is the only player with more, with a standout haul of ten goals and assists to his name already.

It will certainly be pleasing for Wolves fans to see their summer signing enjoying a good campaign so far. He is certainly stepping up now Jimenez has left the club, and they will be hoping he can continue his fine form into the festive period.

Strand Larsen’s form is encouraging, and there might well be another deadly striker at the club next season if one star who is out on loan can continue his form next season.

Wolves' in-form loan star

The player in question here is Fabio Silva. The Portuguese striker has not had an easy ride playing for the Old Gold but is enjoying life out on loan this season with La Liga side Las Palmas. He has four goals and one assist in ten games for the club so far.

Incredibly, the former Porto star is just one goal this season behind his entire tally for Wolves. He has scored five times and has six assists in 72 appearances. Given they paid £35.6m for him in 2020 as an 18-year-old, this is a disappointing return.

Wolves striker Fabio Silva.

After several loan spells, it must be a relief for Silva to have found his best form in front of goal, and he has certainly reaped the rewards so far. The 22-year-old recently made his debut for the Portugal senior team, a 19-minute cameo against Croatia in the Nations League.

Manager Roberto Martinez was full of praise for the Wolves striker in the days leading up to his debut. He called him “a different player” to the one Old Gold fans have seen, and the fact he gave him a senior bow shows the faith he has in him.

There is perhaps still hope at Wolves that their former teenage prodigy can come good. He is on par in terms of goals this season with Strand Larsen, and if he can translate that form over to the Premier League, they would have two talented young strikers on their books, and, finally, some genuine replacements for Jimenez.

Midfield mainstay Thomas Partey, who’s emerged as a crucial player for Mikel Arteta this season after playing more of a bit-part role last campaign, is out of contract next summer as things stand.

Some reports suggest that Partey could be offered a contract extension, but the Ghanaian’s future in N5 remains undetermined for the time being. Arsenal could even decide that getting the 31-year-old’s £200,000-per-week wages off the club’s books is the best thing to do.

Meanwhile, Jorginho is also set to leave at the end of this season when his deal expires, so Arteta could find himself pretty short of midfield options in the near future.

Kieran Tierney looks almost certain to leave Arsenal after falling out of Arteta’s long-term plans, while some media sources also claim Jakub Kiwior is expected to leave in January, as Takehiro Tomiyasu also faces an uncertain future.

“He’s not in Mikel Arteta’s plans anymore,” said journalist Charles Watts on Tierney.

“That’s been clear for a long time and Tierney accepts that. There is no animosity there. He knows the club has moved on and that his qualities as a left-back are not what Arsenal need in the system that they play.

“He has been included in Arsenal’s Premier League squad for the season so he could play once fit, but I struggle to really see that happening. He will hope to get a move in January, probably on loan.”

In terms of Arsenal’s mainstay stars, Real Madrid have been repeatedly linked with a move for star defender William Saliba.

Arsenal centre-back William Saliba

The France international, who is pivotal to Arteta, is thought to be on Ancelotti’s radar as a possible central defensive upgrade – but it was widely thought this transfer would be one for next summer.

Real Madrid talking about signing Saliba from Arsenal in January

Now, according to le10sport journalist Alexis Bernard, Real Madrid are talking about signing Saliba from Arsenal in January.

The 23-year-old is apparently open to the idea of a move to the Bernabeu as Real chiefs debate whether to make a winter or summer move after defender Eder Militao’s serious ACL injury. However, Arsenal are battling to tie him down and keep Saliba out of Ancelotti’s clutches.

“The battle begins between Arsenal and Real Madrid for William Saliba,” wrote Bernard on X.

“Saliba feels very good at Arsenal. Talks have just started for a contract extension. Saliba not insensitive to Real Madrid… Discussion underway in Madrid to know if winter or summer offensive 2025.”

Edu and Nottingham Forest make contact to sign "machine" versatile attacker

Nottingham Forest have reportedly made contact to sign a “machine” in what would be Edu Gaspar’s first signing involved at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest flying under Nuno and agree Edu deal

It is a brilliant time to be a Reds supporter following their fine start to the Premier League season under Nuno Espirito Santo. The 50-year-old’s first full season in charge of Forest couldn’t have started any better, with five wins, four draws and just one defeat in the first 10 games leaving them in the Champions League places.

A recent 3-0 win over West Ham saw Chris Wood, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ola Aina get on the scoresheet, with Forest now preparing for another City Ground clash with Newcastle United before a trip to Arsenal.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis appears to have secured the services of ex-Arsenal man Edu Gaspar, with the sporting director leaving the Emirates in recent days. It has been claimed that Edu has agreed a deal in principle to take up a role with Marinakis, who owns Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

Reports have suggested that Marinakis has been pursuing Edu since the summer and plans to give him a role as chief executive across all clubs, tripling his wages in the process. Edu could therefore be behind a number of new transfer dealings at the City Ground, and it looks as if his first target has emerged.

Nottingham Forest make contact for Bayern Munich gem

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Forest are interested in signing Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel and have made contact over a potential deal. However, Tel isn’t looking to leave the Allianz Arena on loan in January, with fellow Bundesliga side Werder Bremen also keen on the 19-year-old’s services.

Tel is under contract with Bayern until 2029 and despite being 19 years of age, has already made 76 senior appearances for the German giants after joining in 2022, where former Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said the striker was “one of the biggest talents in Europe” and “there were a lot of clubs who wanted to sign him”.

Capable of playing as a left winger or through the middle, the France U21 international has scored 16 goals and provided six assists for Bayern.

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

He could therefore be an ideal option to rival Wood, Forest’s free-scoring striker, for the second half of the season, as Nuno’s side look for a top-half finish and possibly more come May.

Previously linked with Chelsea, Tel has already been hailed as a “two-footed ball-striking machine”, however, it seems as if a transfer could prove tricky, although transfer expert Edu will look to work his magic.

Boland bags four to put Victoria on top

Marcus Harris finished 41 not out at stumps on day two to push his Ashes case as Victoria gained a lead of 123 with nine wickets in hand

Four wickets from Scott Boland has helped put Victoria in a commanding position at the halfway mark of an absorbing Sheffield Shield clash with New South Wales on a bowler-friendly surface at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.New South Wales were bundled out for 151 on day two. Victoria opener Marcus Harris then continued to push his Ashes case by reaching 41 not out at stumps as Victoria built a lead of 123 with nine second-innings wickets intact and two days to play. The Blues started the day well with skipper Kurtis Patterson and nightwatchman Harry Conway frustrating the visitors in a 46-run stand before Conway eventually fell having faced 87 balls for his 20. But the Blues’ innings stalled as Jason Sangha fell for a 15-ball duck, brilliantly caught in the gully by Jono Merlo off Will Sutherland.Boland then bagged the prized scalp of Patterson on 48, as he has done in previous encounters, angling in from around the wicket and nipping away to scratch the outside edge. The Blues’ tail offered very little resistance with Jack Edwards left stranded on 29 not out as the last five wickets fell for just 19 runs. Mitchell Perry and Jon Holland picked up two apiece while Boland claimed the last two to finish with 4 for 34.Victoria suffered a loss early in their second innings with James Seymour superbly caught down the leg side by Peter Nevill of Trent Copeland. But Harris and Peter Handscomb then saw Victoria to stumps with an unbeaten 53-run stand. Harris was patient in his 41 not out and did have a slice of luck, nicking a ball between first and second slip off Nathan Lyon. But he also played some fluent drives on a surface that had been difficult to score on. Handscomb finished on 26 not out giving Victoria a chance to build a match-winning lead on day three.

Ben Brown scored another century for Sussex to save his side from total collapse against Derbyshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship. It was his second in as many matches, his fourth of the season and the 22nd of his career and it led Sussex to a score of 255 for 5 at the end of the second day as he continued his fine run of form after being removed from the captaincy earlier in the summer. They still trail Derbyshire by 210 runs at the 1st Central County Ground.Sussex, chasing 316 merely to avoid the follow-on, got off to the worst possible start against an impressive Derbyshire attack when the normally adhesive Ali Orr was out first ball. Playing at a wide delivery he should have left alone, with only two overs to be bowled before lunch, he wafted at it and was caught behind by Brooke Guest.Related

Captain and star batter Tom Haines was second out at 36, swinging at a legside delivery from Dustin Melton to give Guest another catch. Danial Ibrahim made just one before he edged the formidable Ben Aitchson to Wayne Madsen at second slip, and Aitchson struck again in his next over when he caught Harrison Ward bang in front of stumps for a duck.At that stage Sussex were 46 for 4 and being outplayed by Derbyshire in the battle to avoid the County Championship’s wooden spoon. But Brown, watched by his parents, and fellow wicketkeeper Oliver Carter then put on 142 for the fifth wicket in 40 overs. Carter scored his maiden first-class fifty, though he was out shortly afterwards, caught on the square-leg boundary for 51, and Melton made it two wickets in five balls when he dismissed the wretchedly out-of-form Delray Rawlins, caught and bowled for a duck off a leading edge. But Brown, who reached his hundred from 134 balls with 14 fours, went on to reach 150 not out.Derbyshire had resumed on 371 for 5 and they lost their sixth wicket to the third ball of the morning. Guest had not added to his 30 runs when he was lbw to the lively Jamie Atkins. There followed a brisk seventh wicket partnership of 54 between Anuj Dal and Mattie McKiernan, who played a number of handsome strokes before he was caught behind to a delivery from Sean Hunt that surprised him with its bounce.Aitchison, driving, was caught by Brown at first slip and then Melton was well taken by Ibrahim at deep backward square-leg. Finally, Ed Moulton gave Brown his second catch at first slip after it was parried by second slip. Both Atkins and Henry Crocombe finished with four wickets. The Derbyshire total of 465 included 57 extras.
