Klopp must now bench Liverpool star who dropped a 4/10 vs Man City

Candidly, Liverpool didn't play that well against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, and while it was galvanising to emerge from the lion's den with little more than a few nicks, there will be an internal acceptance that further work is needed.

This sounds pessimistic, and Liverpool fans can take great pride and confidence in the Etihad Stadium failing to secure an English-record 24th consecutive home victory, keeping the Reds just one point behind the second-placed Premier League champions.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

But the visitors made several mistakes and fell behind once again in the first half, and this erroneous streak is a perpetual risk of demise – though the resilience and spirit to climb back on so many occasions is a testament to the Anfield side's character and quality.

Jurgen Klopp called it "a good point", and it really was, especially given that Liverpool were trounced 4-1 at the Etihad back in April, but with title ambitions in every Redman's mind, more snap and swagger in the final third is necessary to prevail in a tantalising race for supremacy.

Darwin Nunez's performance vs Manchester City

Darwin Nunez epitomises all of the good and some of the bad on the red half of Merseyside. Penetrative in his surging runs; dynamic and menacing when shifting into position.

The Uruguayan talisman has undoubtedly built on last season's indifference and has already clinched 12 direct goal contributions from 18 matches – that's a goal or assist every 80 minutes.

Is it fair to say that he's been out of sorts for a few matches, though? He certainly cost Liverpool dearly against Luton Town earlier in November, while the chasm of coolness between him and Erling Haaland on Saturday was evident – handed a dismal 4/10 match rating courtesy of GOAL – though it's somewhat tricky to match the Norwegian machine punch for punch.

As per Sofascore, Nunez took four shots in Manchester and failed to capitalise on one glorious opportunity, also failing to win either of his ground duels, getting caught offside twice and taking just 25 touches – which was fewer than Alisson between the sticks.

The £85m club-record signing is fantastic; really. He's the seat-raising, brazen type of centre-forward that will persist with incessant thorniness for the opposition, but he's dipped a bit after a captivating spell, and Klopp would be wise to now unleash Cody Gakpo in his stead.

Cody Gakpo's season in numbers

Perhaps pigeonholed into deep-lying roles than he might prefer, Gakpo is proving to be a jack-of-all-trades for Liverpool this season, and while his flexibility is valuable, he will want to cement a starring role in a singular position.

That would probably be as the focal frontman, given that his four goals and one assist this season have come across his nine appearances as the spearpoint.

Liverpool player Cody Gakpo.

Described as "something special" by Fabrizio Romano for his international escapades in Qatar, the Dutchman had fired himself into form before sustaining an injury against Tottenham Hotspur – just before equalising – at the end of September.

He's started just once in the Premier League since, but with Anfield welcoming Austrian side LASK in the Europa League on Thursday night, Klopp will find the perfect chance to instigate rotation and provide the 24-year-old with a launchpad.

The winter period is relentless, and like a buffeting storm, it can render some immobile. Gakpo can rekindle his former goalscoring feats and prove his worth as Liverpool's centre-forward for the forthcoming encounters.

Ranking among the top 9% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes and the top 1% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, Gakpo is a creative force and can braid the frontline's attack together, cutting patterns through the lines and enhancing his outfit's chances of an emphatic victory.

While Nunez is a deadly weapon on his day, he has plateaued somewhat over recent matchweeks, and Gakpo must now be presented with the opportunity to impress.

Williamson, Watling hold off Pakistan's surge on even first day

Day 1 Stumps This was a day of – pardon the cliché – proper Test cricket. It was a day that Yasir Shah threatened to hijack once more after an extraordinary pre-lunch burst that reduced New Zealand to 72 for 4, with three wickets lost for two runs. Equally, it was a day that Kane Williamson looked to have salvaged for his side with a phenomenally gritty partnership alongside BJ Watling, who finished unbeaten on 42 off 180 balls, having come in to bat all the way back in the first session. In the end, it was perhaps a day that concluded with as little to separate the sides as there had been at the toss, where a delighted Williamson had decided to bat first, as you do in Abu Dhabi.New Zealand went to stumps with three wickets still in hand, having accumulated 229 attritional runs across 90 overs. Watling kept the innings together after Pakistan looked like they would blow away the tail when Williamson fell, and on a track that is already taking in ludicrous turn for Day 1, every run he and the remainder of New Zealand’s batsman can put together could be priceless by the end of the week.Bilal Asif was just as impressive as Yasir throughout the day, though it wasn’t until the final session that he had something to show for it. That was when the pitch started misbehaving altogether more noticeably; the players might gave gone in for tea, but the pitch seemed to be on something stronger than that. The only problem the spinners had was the ball was turning too much, an unusual situation for the opening day of a match. Bilal accounted for Colin de Grandhomme this way, with a sharply turning ball flicked to leg slip, where Asad Shafiq completed a smart catch. Tim Southee, too, fell to the off spinner, and it was around then New Zealand were in danger of being bowled out on Monday before the late resistance of debutant Will Somerville in Watling’s company. But the day was arguably defined by the second session partnership of Williamson and Watling, which accounted for 104 runs in 249 balls. After Yasir’s salvo in the opening session, New Zealand were left to pick up the pieces, and the pair foraged and gathered rather well. New Zealand abandoned all other concerns but the defence of their wickets, not worried that the run-rate dropped like a stone. The pair scrapped their way through the 32 overs in the middle session, adding 72 runs along the way, but most gratifyingly, they had the asterisk next to their name that denotes their continued presence at the crease after tea.Even scoring at more than 2 per over in the session was a climb from where the run-rate was at one point: from overs 20-44, New Zealand added 45 runs to their total, going at under 1.50. In the second half of the post-lunch session though, Williamson began to capitalise as the bowlers’ lengths drifted more regularly, and brought up another plucky half-century. He was unbeaten on 71 by tea, but it was altogether slower going for Watling. The wicketkeeper batsman has been around the New Zealand setup for almost a decade now, and you could see why. Often, he has played innings with complete disregard for his own reputation or instincts, with his reserves of concentration seemingly never running low. Monday was another such day, where for the best part he was simply hanging around for Williamson, an anchor around which his captain built his own innings. He struck only one four in over two sessions of play, but it is that store he sets by his wicket that makes him such a valuable cricketer for the Black Caps. It is not the first time he has done so, and it’s unlikely to have been the last.Williamson, for his part, was desperately unlucky to miss out on what would have been a well-made hundred, chiefly responsible for ticking the scorecard along when Pakistan were at their most menacing. He was the one who declawed Yasir after lunch. He also seemed to take the fangs out of the pitch, which began to look treacherous after he had been dismissed. So supremely comfortable was he at the crease, that it was a shock to see him dismissed with such a well-rehearsed plan. Hasan Ali encouraged a drive on the up, where Asad Shafiq was perfectly positioned for a simple catch, sending the New Zealand captain back 11 runs away from a 19th Test hundred. In the morning, Yasir’s bruising body blows to New Zealand in the last 20 minutes before lunch undid much of the hard work of Jeet Raval and Williamson in the previous hour. It had all been going along steadily for the visitors before Yasir found prodigious turn to beat Raval’s inside edge, the ball clipping enough of leg stump to withstand a review from the batsman. That brought a very edgy-looking Ross Taylor to the crease, who went back to a ball so short it was almost a long-hop. It neither turned nor bounced, instead clattering into the batsman’s middle stump. Henry Nicholls’ dismissal was even softer, with the left-hander sweeping all around a Yasir googly, managing only to catch an edge that dragged it back into the stumps. The day had begun perfectly for New Zealand. The toss is more important here than just about anywhere in the world outside of Sri Lanka, with the side batting first only ever having lost once. But Pakistan, fielding 18-year old debutant Shaheen Afridi, found cheer in his first spell, trapping Tom Latham in front of the stumps. Fittingly enough for a young man with the future ahead of him, it was a review that got him the wicket, with the umpire originally having turned the appeal down.Having seen out a crucial passage of play late in the day, New Zealand will need to be up for another one early morning tomorrow. Instead of being skittled out under 225, the lower order has held its own against a surging Pakistan late in the day, even a new ball unable to dislodge the unflappable Watling, with Somerville playing an impressively composed innings on debut. So important is this first innings total any runs scored now already feel like a burden on a potential fourth innings chase, which, judging by the way today has gone, could come far sooner than the fifth day.

Peter Handscomb makes case for Test return with unbeaten ton

Peter Handscomb drives through the off side•Getty Images

Peter Handscomb has made a statement to Australia’s selectors with a patient unbeaten century to put Victoria in control of the Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at the MCG.Handscomb, who lost his Test place on Australia’s tour of the UAE, capitalised on a superb 132-run opening stand from Travis Dean and Marcus Harris to grind out 123 not out from 215 balls and give Victoria a 101-run lead with two days remaining. He struck 15 boundaries in his 14th first-class century, which he brought up with lovely cover drive off Cameron Valente.Victoria at one stage looked set to pile up a huge score but Nick Winter put them back under pressure with three wickets in the space of eight overs. He found the edge of Harris’ bat before trapping Dean in front and got Cameron White caught behind for a duck as well.Handscomb and Matthew Short steadied Victoria for over 18 overs but they again slumped to 5 for 193, losing both Short and wicketkeeper Seb Gotch in quick succession before Handscomb found solid allies in James Pattinson and Peter Siddle. Pattinson made 32 after being promoted to No. 7 while Siddle contributed 13 not out from 72 deliveries in an unbeaten 55-run stand with Handscomb to take the home side through to stumps. However, Victoria’s charge to a third straight win to start the season may be hindered by some wet weather that is due in Melbourne on day three.

"From what I hear…" – Reporter drops concerning Everton takeover claim

Everton chiefs are still pushing hard to complete a takeover of the club, but a worrying update has now emerged courtesy of journalist Paul Brown.

Everton takeover updates

The Blues have recovered from a terrible start to the season, winning two of their last three Premier League games, not to mention also progressing into the fourth round of the EFL Cup, having picked up an impressive victory away to Aston Villa.

Away from the on-pitch action, there is plenty of drama unfolding, however, and it arguably isn't helping Sean Dyche and his players focus on results. Supporters are desperate for the reign of owner Farhad Moshiri to come to an end, in order for the club to kick on and enjoy an exciting new chapter – one that involves a move to Bramley Moore Dock at the end of the season.

The prospective new Everton owners, 777 Partners, are pushing to get a deal over the line, but it is proving to be a slow process at the moment, causing much frustration among the fanbase, although they did release a takeover update this week reassuring fans that things are on track.

Are 777 buying Everton?

Speaking Give Me Sport, Brown provided an Everton takeover update of his own, saying there are concerns over 777 Partners' credentials amongst those at the club, with "big hurdles" still to be cleared:

"I think a rational businessman like Andy Bell (Toffees fan and investor) would share the concerns of many about the proof and source of funds from 777. I think there are big hurdles still for this deal to get approval. And it's not clear yet really what role Andy Bell wants to play going forward in the club.

"He's not the only lender to Everton and there are a lot of other creditors that will need to be satisfied by whoever comes in and takes the club over. From what I hear, there are a lot of people around the club who still have concerns about 777 Partners' funding. And it will be interesting to see whether the group can allay those fears and get this deal done."

While it is wholly understandable why Everton fans want new owners in place as soon as possible, it is also vital that things aren't rushed for the sake of it, bringing in the wrong people and hurting the club further down the line.

If those high up at Goodison Park are unsure about 777 Partners, they must be extremely careful, only going through with the takeover if there is total confidence that they are the right people to guide the Blues into the future.

A recent takeover update suggested that Bell and George Downing are already wanted as investors by 777, having put £80m into the club working with MSP Sports Capital, so the fact that they are unconvinced should certainly raise some alarm bells.

The hope is that an agreement is reached sooner rather than later, bringing an end to these turbulent times at Goodison, allowing the football to take precedence as Dyche's men look to climb the Premier League table, starting with Saturday's crucial trip to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Brazil legend Rivaldo backs England to win Euro 2024 and warns Selecao are in for tough test against Gareth Southgate's Three Lions at Wembley

Rivaldo believes that England are the favourites to win Euro 2024 and has warned Brazil of the Three Lions' threat at Wembley.

England to lock horns in a friendly against the SelecaoGareth Southgate's troops tipped as favourites Rivaldo backs them to win Euro 2024WHAT HAPPENED?

The Three Lions will be up against a struggling Brazil who have been thoroughly unimpressive in the recent past – losing their last three 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including a 1-0 defeat to eternal rivals Argentina. Moreover, the absence of several first-team players like Neymar, Gabriel, Marquinhos, Casemiro and Gabriel Martinelli in addition to Alisson Becker and Ederson has further complicated matters for manager Dorival Junior who will be in charge of his first match on Saturday evening.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

In sharp contrast, England are yet to lose a game since their 2-1 loss to France in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals. They have won six of their eight matches in the Euro 2024 qualifiers and have looked like a formidable force ready to conquer Europe.

WHAT RIVALDO SAID

Speaking to Betfair, Rivado said: "The England team is strong and there are great players throughout the squad, so it will be a tough game for Brazil at Wembley, it will be a great test. England have a great chance of winning the European Championships in Germany this summer."

Comparing England's situation to that of Argentina a few years back, the World Cup winner added: "Many good players have worn the England shirt and yet they still haven't won a major trophy since 1966. In that sense, they are similar to the situation Argentina were in before they won the World Cup in Qatar, they had many great players who deserved it which gave hope to fans and finally, they won the title after many years.

"Under Gareth Southgate, England have given their fans hope, reached the final of Euro 2020, and are now ready to go one better and win a tournament. Everything is in place for them to have a great Euros this summer and a great World Cup in 2026. On Saturday, they will provide a big test for Brazil."

Notts derail leaders Lancashire to get back on track

ScorecardNotts Outlaws regained their winning touch to down North Group leaders Lancashire Lightning in their rain-interrupted Vitality Blast match at Trent Bridge. Lancashire, off the back of five straight victories, had been challenged to score 156 from 15 overs but could only reach 139 for 8, giving the defending champions the points by a margin of 16 runs under the DLS-method.Earlier, Notts posted a score of 196 for 9, despite losing four wickets inside the opening six overs. Jake Libby and Billy Root, both inexperienced in this form of the game, rebuilt the innings with a well-constructed stand of 78 in 9.2 overs, in which both registered their highest scores in the format.Libby scored 44 from 28 balls and Root, who played in last year’s final, stroked his way to 40 from 35. Their departures heralded some late drama as Lancashire snatched three wickets in four deliveries but Dan Christian’s brutal 36 not out took the home side to the brink of 200.Riki Wessels had played a stunning cameo at the start of the match, clubbing Graham Onions for four sixes in an over, before falling for 33 from only 13 deliveries faced. Toby Lester, with 3 for 33, returned the pick of the bowling figures for the visitors.Under threatening skies Alex Davies and Karl Brown plundered 29 runs from three overs – with Davies hitting four boundaries in Samit Patel’s opening over – before the heavens opened and the umpires sent the players scurrying back to the pavilion. The restart couldn’t have been more dramatic, with Notts taking two wickets in as many balls. Davies was bowled by Patel for 19, then Arron Lilley was run out after sharp work from Will Fraine.Keaton Jennings, given dispensation by the ECB to play after being named in England’s Test squad, didn’t hang around for long before being bowled by Patel, who ended with two for 26. Karl Brown top-scored for Lightning with 49 from only 30 balls, which included four fours and two maximums but he then drilled Ish Sodhi to cover. The contest was very much in the balance as Jordan Clark and Steven Croft perished quickly but James Faulkner revived hopes for the Red Rose by clubbing his first delivery for an enormous six but his promising innings was cut short as the Outlaws held firm for their first home win of the campaign, in front of a crowd of 11,267.

Liverpool transfer news: Reds made "call" to try to sign £65k-p/w "monster"

Liverpool were interested in making a fifth midfield addition over the summer, but a reliable journalist has revealed that a deal wasn’t as advanced as has recently been reported.

What's the latest transfer news at Liverpool?

According to reports, FSG and Jurgen Klopp maintain a strong interest in Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes despite him being about to sign a new long-term contract in the northeast, whilst club correspondent Neil Jones has confirmed that West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen is a player that chiefs have admired for quite some time.

The Merseyside outfit have additionally set their sights on Juventus’ Federico Chiesa should Mohamed Salah leave for Saudi Arabia next year, and they have also learned that it will take a huge offer to secure the services of Brentford’s Aaron Hickey should they want to prise him away from the Community Stadium.

At Anfield, another player of interest was Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat who, before the transfer deadline, ended up joining Premier League rivals Manchester United on a season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of it, but an interesting claim emerged that he could have instead been on his way to L4.

The Daily Mail’s Confidential previously reported that the Moroccan defensive midfielder was just hours away from joining the Reds, but the deal supposedly ended up collapsing following talks being put on hold in a period that saw the board have a change of heart.

Did Liverpool almost sign Sofyan Amrabat?

In his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, however, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool did initiate contact to ask about a swoop for Amrabat, but shut down rumours that it was ever close to completion. He said:

Speaking of Amrabat, I’ve been asked about some reports of Liverpool coming very close to signing the Moroccan midfielder this summer. From what I know, there was just a call from Liverpool in the summer right after the Moises Caicedo story to ask for conditions of Amrabat deal and then nothing else.

“It was not even a negotiation, just a request and then they moved on [to] different targets. I think there’s no need to compare as in that position they preferred Wataru Endo, so their choice was clear.”

Manchester United's loan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Is Sofyan Amrabat good?

During Man United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Crystal Palace on Tuesday, Amrabat made his full debut and was the star of the show, recording an outstanding 96.3% pass success rate, highlighting his excellent calmness and composure on the ball.

Sponsored by Nike, the 27-year-old also managed two tackles during the game so he loves to throw himself into challenges and win back possession for his team, with these qualities having previously seen him dubbed a “monster” by journalist Carlo Garganese.

Furthermore, Ten Hag’s £65k-per-week earner, who has secured four senior trophies throughout his career, is a versatile operator having been deployed in eight different positions since bursting onto the scene, including everywhere across the midfield and the defensive backline, so it's hard to deny he could have been a great addition for the Reds.

Newcastle: Howe could ditch Tonali for ‘elegant’ academy star

As Newcastle United marked their return to the Champions League with a commendable goalless draw away to AC Milan on Tuesday evening, it proved to be a relatively unhappy return to San Siro for Magpies midfielder, Sandro Tonali.

How did Tonali perform against AC Milan?

Signed from the Serie A giants on a £55m deal this summer, the Italy international was the most high-profile addition of the window for Eddie Howe's side, with the Tynesiders looking to kick on from their impressive fourth-place finish last term.

Despite the excitement surrounding the prospect of partnering the 23-year-old alongside Bruno Guimaraes in the centre of the park, it has not been the dream start for the playmaker thus far, even after netting on debut in the 5-1 victory over Aston Villa.

The one-time Brescia maestro subsequently started in the defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion – while being substituted in all three – having also sat out the recent win over Brentford, in preparation for the return to Milan.

That 'homecoming' did not go smoothly, however, with Tonali 'rather useless in possession as he failed to pose a threat to his former team' – according to GOAL's Peter McVitie – with his lack of impact showcased by the fact that he made just 20 touches in his 72-minute outing, while also losing the ball on nine occasions.

Having also committed four fouls and won just one of his six total duels, as per Sofascore, it may be time for Howe to consider shaking things up by removing his new man from the side, as 'midfield questions continue to be asked' – according to The Chronicle's Lee Ryder.

Who could replace Tonali?

Against Stefano Pioli's side, the northeast side had lined up with a midfield trio of Sean Longstaff, Guimaraes and Tonali, prior to the latter man being withdrawn in the closing stages in favour of promising youngster, Elliot Anderson.

The former Bristol Rovers loanee – who has been likened to Paul Gascoigne in the past – has featured in every game so far this term and even started against the Bees at the weekend, having been handed his chance amid injuries to the likes of Joe Willock and Joelinton.

elliot-anderson-newcastle-united-match-opinion-chelsea-premier-league

With 35 first-team appearances under his belt for the St James' Park outfit, the 20-year-old does only have a solitary assist and no goals to show for it thus far, ensuring that he still has work to do to establish himself as a regular fixture in the side.

The Whitley Bay-born starlet – who has courted the attention of both England and Scotland at senior international level – is not the only academy asset who could be worthy of a chance to shine, however, with young Lewis Miley also a figure that Howe may look to despite his relative youth.

Who is Lewis Miley?

Rather than turning out for Newcastle's U19s in the UEFA Youth League, the 17-year-old was included as part of the matchday squad for the senior side's trip to Milan, showcasing just how highly regarded he is by Howe and his staff.

While the teenager was not able to get on the pitch for the midweek clash, he has already made his senior debut after coming on as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw away to Chelsea on the final day of last season.

That promotion to the first-team set-up has been warranted amid the youngster's fine displays in the youth ranks in recent times, having notably contributed seven goals and assists in just 13 appearances for the club's U21 side.

The England U19 international – whose brother Jamie is also on the books at St James' Park – was rewarded for such form after being handed his first professional contract back in May, having even featured for Howe's side during the World Cup break last year against Riyadh.

lewis-miley-newcastle-united-opinion-in-the-pipeline-bruno-guimaraes-premier-league

Such great strides would suggest that Miley is not too far away from being given a proper chance to prove himself at first-team level, with the likes of Tonali – and Anderson – needing to watch out as their starting berths could be under threat sooner rather than later.

How good is Lewis Miley?

The fact that at 17 the Englishman is already in the manager's thinking is a clear indication of his talent, with respected insider Ryder having previously hailed the academy star as a player who has "bags of potential", following the announcement of his new deal.

Young Miley was also the recipient of hefty praise from Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope after starting in the pre-season friendly clash with Chelsea back in July, with the reporter providing a glowing review of his performance in that 1-1 stalemate:

"Lewis Miley has been Newcastle's best player so far. And that isn't in the context of him only being 17 years old. He's just simply been their best player. So elegant on the ball & brave in how he uses it."

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

A silky and classy operator in possession, the Stanley-born sensation could offer a real creative spark to the Magpies as a link between the midfield and attack, with journalist Mark Carruthers having hailed the emerging superstar as "a powerful runner, [with] good close control and can pick a pass".

As Carruthers also stated, it looks as if Newcastle have a "real player" on their hands with regard to the 6 foot 1 maestro, with the wait now on to see if his chance will come in the first-team this season, amid the club's current midfield woes.

Of course, it would be a gamble to turn to such a raw and youthful talent as the answer to Howe's concerns in that department, yet the fact that Miley was included for the trip to San Siro shows that he is certainly in the thoughts of the Newcastle boss.
