Man Utd now considering January Antoine Semenyo move as release clause emerges

There has now been a new update on Manchester United’s interest in AFC Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, with details of his release clause emerging ahead of the January transfer window.

Semenyo has been one of the breakout stars of the Premier League this season, with Bournemouth teammate Lewis Cook praising the forward for the improvements he’s made to his game, saying: “He’s got a lot better at running back and helping out the team too. He’s a powerful lad and has all the ability in the world. Hopefully he can continue to show that.”

Naturally, given the level of his performances, the 25-year-old has started to attract interest from elsewhere, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and United being named as potential suitors.

It was previously thought that it may take around £80m to prise the former Bristol City man away from Bournemouth, but there has now been a new update on his future, which suggests a deal could be done for a more reasonable price.

Man Utd line up Semenyo move amid £65m release clause

According to a report from United In Focus, Man United are now considering a January move for Semenyo, whose £65m release clause will become active in January, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey providing a further update.

Bailey said: “Manchester United have been chasing Antoine Semenyo since the summer; they have maintained that interest since. I am told they were fully aware of the clause when he signed his new deal, after known about its validity for January and beyond.

“United like Semenyo, and whilst unlikely, he is an option that would be considered for January. Whilst Semenyo does have a clause, £65m in one hit is a big ask for any club.”

Despite being cheaper than initially expected, £65m would be a huge outlay, but it could be worth INEOS breaking the bank to sign the Ghanaian, who would become one of Man United’s top ten most expensive signings of all time.

Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie recently lauded his teammate as “scary good”, having already racked up nine goal contributions in the Premier League, although he would’ve been frustrated not to add to his tally against Aston Villa last time out, being denied from the penalty spot by Emiliano Martinez.

Still, there have been some very encouraging signs from the London-born forward, with perhaps his best performance coming in the Cherries’ 3-1 win against Fulham, picking up a brace and an assist, which resulted in a 9.5 SofaScore match rating.

Having struggled recruitment-wise in recent years, Man United may have finally found a winning formula, bringing in proven Premier League stars Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the summer, and Semenyo would be a similar type of signing.

"Not good enough" – Carragher tells Moyes two Everton stars need replacing in January

Jamie Carragher has taken aim at Thierno Barry and another Everton star, following the 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Monday night.

David Moyes made a very positive start after returning to Merseyside, and signed off at Goodison Park on a high note by defeating Southampton 2-0, but his side have failed to really kick on this season, having collected just 12 points from ten Premier League games.

As things stand, the Toffees aren’t in any imminent danger of suffering relegation, given that they remain five points clear of the bottom three, but there are some signs they could be drawn into a battle for survival.

Perhaps most concerningly, summer signing Barry hasn’t hit the ground running at striker, failing to score in the opening ten top-flight matches, and the Frenchman’s performance against the Black Cats left a lot to be desired.

The 23-year-old was hooked before the hour mark after missing one big chance and touching the ball just 19 times, squandering the majority of the passes he attempted.

Carragher takes aim at Barry after Sunderland

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher has now claimed that Moyes needs to sign a new centre-forward in the summer transfer window, given that Barry and Beto aren’t up to the required standard.

The former Liverpool defender said: “Everton need to find a striker, what they’ve got right now is not good enough, and that reason alone could mean that between now and the end of the season they are looking over their shoulders in terms of staying in the Premier League.

“So, they’ve got new owners – obviously a lot better than what they’ve had before, but that is the one glaring position that Everton need to fill in January. They have to find somebody.”

It would be somewhat surprising Barry was even given nearly an hour against Sunderland, but his back-up option has also struggled to get on the scoresheet on a regular basis ever since his arrival at Everton, with the Guinnea-Bissau international bagging 17 goals in 83 games.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has found it difficult to get to grips with life in the Premier League, and Carragher is correct in his assessment that Everton should pursue a new striker in the January transfer window.

Interestingly, the Toffees have now emerged as potential suitors for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, with it being revealed a shock cut-price deal for the Serbian could be a possibility.

Iliman Ndiaye moving to centre-forward may also be an option, with the winger showing a keen eye for goal this season, finding the back of the net four times in ten Premier League outings.

Tudo aconteceu no primeiro turno do Campeonato Paulista daquele ano.

Not JJ Gabriel: Man Utd brewing homegrown Cunha in "dynamic" 18-year-old

Despite picking up an injury a few weeks ago, new Manchester United number ten Matheus Cunha has made a positive start to life at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old has only played seven games for the club so far, missing the Manchester derby defeat away at the Etihad with the hamstring issue he had earlier in the season.

He’s yet to score or assist, but his impact in the final third has been felt. He’s created seven chances so far, and averaged 1.4 per 90 minutes. He certainly shone on debut against Arsenal.

The Brazil international has performed well for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the international break this month.

Cunha’s form for Brazil

With the form he showed for Wolverhampton Wanderers throughout his time at Molineux, it was always going to be a matter of time before Cunha became a regular in the national team.

After making his debut back in 2021, he broke into the side as a key player earlier in 2025.

The 26-year-old is currently away with Brazil on international duty. In their recent game against continued his excellent form for Selecao, where he managed to score and assist in four games this calendar year.

Well, he added to that tally, which is now three goal involvements in five games, after he assisted Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior against South Korea in a 5-0 win.

Playing as a centre-forward for Ancelotti’s team, he managed 44 touches, created three chances and won four from seven ground duels.

Stats from Sofascore

The 26-year-old has a good relationship with Los Blancos star Vinicius. The pair have played together 11 times for the national team, combining for two goals in that time.

Both of those came in the last two games they played alongside each other in that famous Yellow shirt.

With Cunha’s form threatening to explode for United, too, it will be encouraging for Ruben Amorim that he has a howgrown version of the Brazilian brewing.

United’s homegrown Cunha

United have some incredibly exciting academy players. They’ve produced some sensational talents over the years, and currently on the books, some rising stars can eventually fit that mould.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

It is no secret just how talented 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel is, with the Red Devils academy diamond tipped for a huge career ahead of him.

Yet, he is not the academy star who could be the homegrown Cunha. Instead, that is Samuel Lusale, an 18-year-old winger who moved to Old Trafford last summer from Crystal Palace. He’s already impressed for the academy sides.

In 22 games for the Red Devils under-18s side for far, Lusale has scored once and assisted seven times. This season in particular, the Slovakia under-19 international has been on fire, with four assists and one goal in five U18 Premier League games.

His run of form has been largely unstoppable. The 18-year-old, who was born in Guilford, has only failed to score or assist once, coming against Burnley. He gave Wolves a nightmare, grabbing two goal involvements in a 4-0 win.

Already, you can see how the 18-year-old is similar to Cunha, with the threat he offers in the final third. Described as a “dynamic” attacker by Academy Scoop over on X, he is a threatening ball-carrier, just like Cunha has shown for United this season.

The other similarity comes in the versatility Lusale offers. According to Transfermarkt, he is a winger by trade and has featured on both flanks for the Red Devils. He can also operate as a number ten, which really draws comparisons to Cunha.

The Brazilian is surely going to be an instant hit for United, and has shown glimpses of his best form before getting derailed by injury.

To be brewing a homemade version of Cunha in Lusale is exciting for United fans, especially if he can turn out to be as deadly as their number 10.

Portugal player ratings vs Hungary: Record-breaker Cristiano Ronaldo bags brace, but Dominik Szoboszlai late show denies Seleccao from World Cup qualification

Portugal failed to wrap up 2026 World Cup qualification after conceding a late Hungary equaliser to draw 2-2 in Lisbon. Roberto Martinez's side had initially come from behind to get in front, courtesy of two Cristiano Ronaldo goals that set a new all-time World Cup qualifying record, and were on the brink of booking their ticket to North America thanks to Armenia's defeat to Ireland providing the extra nudge required. But Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai intervened at the death and it means Ronaldo and co. must now wait until November for their next chance instead.

Portugal knew that only a win could seal qualification on Tuesday, but while Ronaldo fired a shot over in the first few minutes, they got off to the worst possible start when Attila Szalai gave Hungary an early lead as goalkeeper Diogo Costa flapped at Szoboszlai's whipped in-swinging corner and Szalai headed in at the far post.

Ronaldo soon had Portugal's first shot on target when striking from distance, before equalising from close-range midway through the first half. That was his 40th goal in World Cup qualifying, a new all-time record surpassing the previous tally of 39 held by Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz. Both sides continued to miss the target or see efforts blocked, until Costa saved from Roland Sallai towards the end of the first half. But Ronaldo ensured Portugal took a lead into the break with another close-range finish, coming in first-half stoppage time after Nuno Mendes crossed into the box.

Portugal hit the post twice in quick succession within 15 minutes of the restart, Ruben Dias thwacking the woodwork from distance and then Bruno Fernandes also hitting the upright via the slightest of touches from Hungary goalkeeper Balasz Toth. As pressure built, he saved again from substitute Joao Felix in outstanding fashion.

It was a slender lead, though, and Szalai almost equalised from another set-piece, heading against the bar. Hungary continued to attack into the final stages and eventually got their reward through Szoboszlai, finishing at the far post after Portugal failed to deal with a low cross into the box.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Diogo Costa (6/10):

Should have done better in the moment Hungary went ahead early on. Needed to be more commanding of his six-yard box. Later showcased his superior skills as a shot-stopper.

    Nelson Semedo (7/10):

Made the Portugal equaliser with some excellent play down the right and a precise cutback for his captain to tap in.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

Almost netted the best goal he'll ever score in his career, but his long-range strike cannoned off the post instead of rippling the net. Had to cut out the ball across the box that gave Hungary their last-ditch equaliser.

    Renato Veiga (5/10):

Left Chelsea after a matter of months because he wanted to play consistently as a centre-back. This was his first start for Portugal since June but he might need to do more to earn himself the position consistently.

    Nuno Mendes (8/10):

The best left-back in the world? It was his sumptuous first-time cross that gave Ronaldo his second to put Portugal ahead. Solid defensively.

    Midfield

    Ruben Neves (7/10):

Controlled things from his deep-lying position, which helped Portugal find a foothold and move towards a dominant display after conceding from an early set-piece.

    Vitinha (7/10):

Deserves credit for the 'pre-assist' for Ronaldo's first goal, splitting the Hungary defence with a pass that played in Semedo.

    Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Created a number of chances that never quite materialised into anything proper. Withdrawn just over an hour in, which will probably please Manchester United.

    Attack

    Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Had plenty of the ball and used it well enough to create chances that weren't taken.

    Cristiano Ronaldo (9/10):

Still completely irrepressible, even pushing 41 years of age. By half-time, Portugal had registered three shots on target, all were him, and he'd scored twice. The fact that both were 'easy' chances from close-range is irrelevant.

    Pedro Neto (7/10):

Looked a threat with quick feet in wide areas and was involved in the go-ahead goal specifically. Drew several fouls and also tested Toth himself shortly before coming off.

    Subs & Manager

    Joao Felix (6/10):

Almost made an instant impact, but for a top save. Peaked in that moment.

    Joao Palhinha (6/10):

Like for like swap for Neves and continued that role to decent effect.

    Francisco Conceicao (6/10):

Had a shot that narrowly missed, but his threat was consistent enough.

    Nuno Tavares (4/10):

Was a serious downgrade when Mendes went off. Too easily allowed Lukacs the space to cross for the tying goal.

    Goncalo Ramos (N/A):

Touched the ball four times in 12 minutes.

    Roberto Martinez (5/10):

Encouraging his adventurous full-backs to go with their natural instincts proved decisive. Might need to reconsider the second-half changes he makes in future.

Worth more than Gibbs-White: Levy struck gold with "sensational" Spurs star

Tottenham Hotspur have been active once again this summer, with a real focus on landing young talents for Thomas Frank to develop during his time at the helm.

Owner Daniel Levy made eight additions this window, including pre-arranged transfers, resulting in an average age of the new players totalling just 23.5 – further highlighting the impetus on landing younger prospects.

Luka Vuskovic was the youngest signing at just 18, whilst midfielder Joao Palhinha has arrived in North London, offering an experienced presence at 30 years of age.

The total average age of Lilywhites’ current first-team squad is now just 25.1, the fourth lowest of any side in the Premier League for the 2025/26 campaign.

Their ambitions of landing another player in such an age range looked certain at one stage, but Frank’s side were unable to complete a deal – leading to one of the sagas of the summer window unfolding in front of their very eyes.

Spurs’ failed move to land Morgan Gibbs-White

At the start of July, Spurs completed a deal for Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United, but quickly followed up the addition with a move for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.

Such a deal seemingly came out of nowhere, after entering talks, to agreeing a £60m transfer fee, all taking place within just a matter of hours – but that wasn’t the end of the drama.

Morgan Gibbs-White 2024-25 stats (timeless)

It was reported that the Lilywhites made an illegal approach for the 25-year-old’s signature, leading to Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis threatening Frank’s men with legal action.

As a result, the player ended up penning a new deal at the City Ground – arguably being a blessing in disguise, given their recent £52m transfer to land Xavi Simons.

However, despite their failed move for the England international, the club have already conducted superb business – now seeing the benefits of their latest transfer focus of investing into youth talents.

The Spurs player who’s now worth more than Gibbs-White

Spurs’ recruitment shift to land youth talents has reached new levels in recent years, as seen by Daniel Levy’s move to land Lucas Bergvall from Swedish side Djurgarden back in the summer of 2024.

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall

The now 19-year-old arrived as an unknown quantity to many of the supporters – understandably so given his tally of just 12 appearances in 2024 for the Swedish outfit before his transfer to North London.

However, the youngster endured a first season to remember, racking up 45 appearances across all competitions – subsequently helping the Lilywhites claim Europa League glory.

He wasn’t the only teenager who played a vital role in Europe and in the Premier League last season, with Archie Gray also making waves in the first-team after his £40m switch from Leeds United.

Such a move was undoubtedly questionable from Levy and Co, especially after the youngster only had one year of senior football under his belt before joining the Lilywhites.

Throughout the first few weeks of the season, the Englishman found minutes hard to come by, but the injury crisis saw him operate in various positions within Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Gray, who’s been labelled “sensational” by one analyst, ended up with a total of 46 appearances across all competitions – many of which were in unfamiliar roles such as right-back and central defence – but roles he filled admirably given his tender age.

At just 19, he’s undoubtedly the future of Spurs, having plenty of time to fulfill his potential, but his stats from last campaign showcase the talent he already possesses.

As a result of his showings in North London, he’s seen his market value soar since his arrival, now being valued at £61.5m by FootballTransfers – a £21.5m increase on the fee paid for his signature.

Such a figure is £1.5m higher than the fee touted for Gibbs-White’s signature earlier this summer – showcasing the hierarchy’s desire to land youth prospects has already been a success.

If Gray can build on his excellent start to life in the capital, there’s no reason as to why he can’t be a regular starter under Frank in the Dane’s hunt for success during his time spell in the role.

The transfer is added evidence of the perfect recruitment model currently in place, with such deals desperately needing to be replicated if the Lilywhites are to win further trophies in the years ahead.

Klopp had the original Ngumoha but he's not played for Liverpool in 18 months

Liverpool are enjoying the fruits of a bold transfer window while simultaneously trusting in their academy.

Under Arne Slot, the Reds have seamlessly balanced blockbuster arrivals with the promotion of youth talent, echoing the philosophy that served them well under Jürgen Klopp.

The summer business was headline-grabbing.

Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a British-record £116m fee, only for Alexander Isak to eclipse that figure with his £125m move from Newcastle on deadline day.

Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Geovani Leoni and Hugo Ekitike also arrived, while Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez and Jarell Quansah were among those to depart.

Despite those upheavals, Liverpool began their Premier League defence with three straight wins – 4-2 at home to Bournemouth, 3-2 away at Newcastle, and 1-0 against Arsenal at Anfield.

Slot has rotated his stars while showing a willingness to reward academy prospects. Against Newcastle, that faith paid off spectacularly when a debutant stole the headlines.

Rio Ngumoha: A star Rises

Rio Ngumoha had been on Liverpool’s radar for months before his 2024 switch from Chelsea’s academy, but few predicted the immediate impact he would make.

Introduced in the 96th minute at St James’ Park, the then 16-year-old marked his Premier League debut by scoring in the 100th minute – becoming the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history.

Now 17, Ngumoha is regarded as one of England’s brightest talents.

A skilful and creative forward, he combines flair with composure beyond his years. His market value, via Transfermarkt, already stands at €10m (£8m), reflecting his rising reputation.

The England youth international had been gradually integrated into senior training last season, appearing on the bench in an EFL Cup tie against Southampton before making his professional debut in January’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley.

That appearance made him the youngest Liverpool player to start a first-team game, and the youngest to feature in the competition for the Reds.

Ngumoha’s rapid ascent has naturally drawn comparisons with other academy graduates who once carried a similar weight of expectation.

For Liverpool, there is a recent example that provides both inspiration and caution.

Liverpool's original Ngumoha

Kaide Gordon was once Liverpool’s golden boy, described by Klopp as a “special talent.”

Signed from Derby County in 2021 for £1m, he was earmarked for a swift breakthrough.

The right-winger wasted little time making an impression, debuting in an EFL Cup win at Norwich and scoring his first senior goal against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.

A Premier League debut soon followed in 2022, and Gordon looked set to carve out a long-term role in Liverpool’s attack.

But progress stalled. Persistent injuries disrupted his momentum and halted his development at a crucial stage.

Last season brought loan spells at Portsmouth and Norwich in the Championship, intended to reignite his trajectory having not played in the Slot era to date. In fact, he’s not been seen in Liverpool red for 18 months.

While those experiences offered game time, they also highlighted the gulf between potential and consistency.

Gordon was linked with another temporary move this summer, but a deal failed to materialise, leaving him to fight for minutes at Anfield.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Now 20, Gordon’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of academy prospects. For every breakthrough like Ngumoha, there are setbacks like Gordon’s. The path from prodigy to first-team regular is rarely linear.

That juxtaposition makes Ngumoha’s situation fascinating. The youngster’s debut winner has elevated him into the spotlight, but Liverpool will be keen to manage his development carefully, avoiding the pitfalls that befell Gordon.

With Slot’s track record of nurturing talent, there is optimism that Ngumoha can continue his upward curve without being burdened by premature expectation.

Ngumoha may be Liverpool’s present and future, but his progression must be handled with care.

The contrast with Gordon illustrates both the opportunity and the risk of investing in youth.

For Slot, the challenge is to integrate Ngumoha while continuing Liverpool’s title defence – a delicate balancing act that could shape the club’s future as much as its present.

Everton tell "great" star to find a new club as Moyes reaches boiling point

After leaving David Moyes unimpressed during pre-season, Everton have now reportedly told one player to find a new club before the end of the transfer window.

Everton still seeking reinforcements

Even with Jack Grealish and Thierno Barry already signed and delivered, Everton are still in the market for attacking additions. The Friedkin Group will know how important it is to add goals to Moyes’ Everton side after they were outscored by every team outside the relegation zone in the Premier League last season.

Barry and Grealish represent a solid start, but it could be argued that the Toffees still need one more arrival. Just who that arrival is remains the big question, however. If recent rumours are anything to go by, then those at the Hill Dickinson are certainly still in the mood for reinforcements.

According to recent reports, Everton have submitted an opening offer worth around £37m to sign Artem Dovbyk from AS Roma, who are also owned by Friedkin.

Whether the American owners can help push the deal through remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that the Roma forward would hand Moyes a deadly strike partner for Barry this season.

Two players who outperformed their expected goals and reached double figures, Everton would be adding 28 league goals to their side if they combined Barry and Dobyk this season.

Of course, however, any deal would need to advance in routine fashion to get over the line at this stage with around two weeks remaining until the transfer window slams shut.

Meanwhile, it’s not just incomings that Everton are focusing on. As one striker arrives, another has reportedly been told to find a new club.

Everton tell Beto to find a new club

According to Football Insider, Everton have now told Beto to find a new club with Moyes unhappy about his attitude during pre-season and seemingly at the end of his tether. The towering forward has only been at the club for a year and, to his credit, showed signs of finding his best form under Moyes before pre-season reportedly undid all of his good work.

Beto

In a ruthless decision by Friedkin and Moyes, Beto could go from the centre of praise to an Everton outcast if reports are anything to go by. And given the earlier interest of Leeds United this summer, the Yorkshire club could now be ones to watch as the door opens to sign the Portuguese striker.

Just how Beto and Moyes’ relationship has reached this point will be the big talking point if the forward does depart. It was only back in May that the Everton boss told reporters: “He’s a great boy, I’ve got to say.

'He's not a machine' – Carlos Baleba's Brighton form affected by Man Utd transfer interest as Fabian Hurzeler warns midfielder to 'be humble'

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler admits that Manchester United's transfer interest in Carlos Baleba may have unsettled the midfielder after a difficult start to the season. The Red Devils were keen on signing the 21-year-old this summer but in the end, they were put off by his reported £115 million price tag. And after being taken off early against Tottenham, Hurzeler has fired a warning to Baleba.

Baleba's 2025-26 preparations were not helped by a pre-season injury, and in Brighton's 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday, he was taken off at half-time as head coach Hurzeler said the youngster was "tired" and "didn't track back". The German challenged the Cameroon international, who is yet to play a full 90 minutes this term, to "stay humble" after United's interest but called for patience as he is "not a machine".

He told reporters: "For sure, when a young boy reads there is interest from Manchester United with a big, big offer, it might affect him deep, deep (down). That’s also part of the development to understand that when you play well, there comes a big offer, there comes a big club who wants to have him. But then to keep pushing, to be humble, stay here in Brighton, and try to make the next step with the team and that’s something we have to keep on working with him and therefore I can’t give you a clear answer if it’s really affected him or not. But for sure, he’s a young boy and we need to understand he’s not a machine that if you click on then he always runs and off then he stops. We need to understand his feelings, his emotions, where he comes from, and that’s our responsibility."

  • Man Utd to return for Baleba

Baleba is reportedly a top target for United boss Ruben Amorim as he tries to sign an athletic, defensively-minded player who can anchor his midfield. But other big teams, who are more likely to win trophies and qualify for the Champions League, may try and sign him next summer. Alternatively, if he struggles for form, eye-catching transfers elsewhere may be put on hold.

What next for Baleba and Brighton?

Brighton, who sit 14th in the Premier League, will hope Baleba can find some form again ahead of their third round Carabao Cup trip to League One side Barnsley on Tuesday, before heading to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Stokes urges England to stay in the now as Ashes year looms once more

England captain targets 3-0 win in New Zealand to cap year of evolution for Test squad

Vithushan Ehantharajah12-Dec-2024England men’s last overseas Test before the 2025-26 Ashes takes place in Hamilton this week – but Ben Stokes has urged his team not to get distracted by next winter’s assignment in Australia. The warning comes as England prepare for their final Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park this week – their 17th of the year – as they look to cap off 2024 with a 3-0 clean sweep. Their next assignment will come in May, a one-off Test against Zimbabwe, before a huge five-match series with India. Though the Ashes glow brightly on the horizon, the captain has reiterated head coach Brendon McCullum’s mantra, to “be where your feet are”.Stokes has overseen a transitional year with the red-ball set-up. There have been seven debuts, with Gus Atkinson, Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir becoming mainstays. Winter debutants Brydon Carse and Jacob Bethell have made strong cases to remain part of the XI, particularly against the Black Caps – Carse as the series’ leading wicket taker (16) and Bethell as the team’s second-highest runscorer (172 at 57.33). While Carse is 29, the rest are mid-twenties and younger: Atkinson 26, Smith 24, while Bashir and Bethell are both 21.The collateral has been an experienced core of players moved on, including Test cricket’s leading wicket-taker James Anderson at the start of the home summer. Indeed, it was while addressing Anderson’s enforced retirement after his 188th and final Test cap, against West Indies at Lord’s, that Stokes explained the move to refresh the team was done with a view to competing in the next Ashes. “We had to make some decisions around what we think is best for the team going into that Ashes series,” Stokes said at the time. “We want to go out there and we want to get that urn back.”While there was plenty of blowback from pensioning off Anderson, the motivation was sound. Hard though they pushed Australia in 2023’s home series – in which Anderson took five wickets at 85.40 – the 2-2 draw saw England fall short of a first Ashes win since 2015. That disappointment, wrapped up with the 4-1 series defeat to India at the start of 2024 put the onus on finding players who could perform in all conditions – particularly those they will face next winter.Stokes says he now regrets those comments made at Lord’s. While he insists those words have not impacted the team, there is a suggestion the management are wary of players looking too far ahead and possibly overlooking the challenges in front of them.Related

The problem with Ben Stokes' problem with over-rates penalties

“I know whenever we spoke about Australia there is a lot looking towards that, but there are still massive series before that,” Stokes said. “We have India. And I think through my own fault, I maybe spoke a little too much about the Ashes and putting too much emphasis on that series, considering how much cricket we had to play before that.”I quite like staying in the present, in the moment. But it is quite tough when you’ve got an Ashes coming around the corner.”I’ve been involved in quite a few of those now and you do always look at the calendar and think ‘oh it’s nearly here’. It’s just hard to avoid. But I think just making sure I keep my focus on being in the here-and-now and what we’ve got coming up. And then, when the Ashes is our next series, then we will focus on it.”On the field, it has broadly been a positive year for England. They will finish with a winning record regardless of the result in Saturday’s Test in Hamilton, having won 9 out of 16 thus far, with three series victories. But the 4-1 and 2-1 losses away to India and Pakistan, respectively, still smart, particularly having been 1-0 up on both occasions.”Seventeen (Tests) in a year is a lot when you add the other cricket,” Stokes added. “A long tough slog but a really good year. Played some good cricket, found some extraordinarily talented players who have shown they’re capable of delivering big performances on the biggest stage, which is playing for your country. So overall, really happy.”The year has also been one of discovery for Stokes, both of the limits of his body, and of areas to improve as a captain – two facets which have been intrinsically linked.A return to bowling as an allrounder following knee surgery at the end of 2023 was interrupted by a hamstring injury, which resulted in him missing four Tests. That had knock-on effects in Pakistan when Stokes’ mood had his team-mates “walking on eggshells”.He had reason to be on edge, after working flat out to regain full fitness, then having his house burgled during the second Test. But in the time between tours, both he and McCullum felt he had veered from being the leader he set out to be when taking charge in 2022.Stokes began this New Zealand tour apologising for his conduct in Pakistan. He now ends it in similar fashion, sensitive to the fact that talk of the Ashes might have a distracting effect on the team.”At the start of the tour where there was a learning curve for me as a captain, from my experience of Pakistan. And then looking back to then (his comments at Lord’s), even speaking and saying stuff like that – we’re so far away from what my leadership had been about. Staying present, staying where we are, and then worrying about stuff when we have to worry about.”In leadership roles, you can maybe differ from where you first started, and think that’s the right thing to be saying or be thinking about. Which then takes you away from a successful mindset, a successful way of speaking within the group. So, yeah, learning curves as a leader I guess.”
