KRL on top of table after draw

A round-up of the President’s Trophy matches on November 3, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2013Khan Research Laboratories were propelled to the top of the table with 12 points after securing a draw against State Bank of Pakistan. KRL put SBP in, with the decision seemingly vindicated after Yasir Arafat bowled opener Raheel Majeed for just 1. A 53-run stand for the second wicket between Kashif Siddiq and Umair Khan saved early blushes, before an imperious 202 from Usman Arshad wrested the match in SBP’s favour. SBP finished their innings on 420, with Sadaf Hussain and Umaid Asif taking three wickets a piece.KRL’s effort proved even between, led by Ali Khan’s 187 at No. 6, with a pair of seventies from Shoaib Ahmed and Nayyer Abbas book-ending the innings. KRL finished on 481 despite Mohammad Naved taking 5 for 129. Facing a deficit of 61 runs, SBP did well to get past the mark with just a wicket lost. Majeed scored 50 while Umair Khan just missed out on an eight first-class ton when he was out for 97. SBP were 199 for 5 when stumps was called and the match was declared a draw.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited beat Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited by 93 runs in Islamabad to register their first win of the tournament. ZTBL batted first, but found themselves in a jam when they were placed at 42 for 3. Haris Sohail and Haseeb-ur-Rehman steadied the innings with a 75-run stand. However, once both batsmen departed, the rest of the order failed to put up a fight as ZTBL were dismissed for 210. Imran Ali led the bowlers with 5 for 31 while Hussain Talat chipped in with 3 for 24. SNGPL’s innings was marked with the inability of their batsmen to push past double figures, with only Naeemuddin and Azhar Ali the exceptions. ZTBL needed just three bowlers to dismiss SNGPL for 80, giving them a lead of 130 runs. Usman Khan took four wickets, while Imran Khan and Mohammad Khalil chipping in with three a piece.ZTBL posted a strong second innings when Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam put on 166 runs for the second wicket, with Azam having to retire hurt on 80. Sohail remained unbeaten on 50 as ZTBL declared on 236 for 2. SNGPL were given a target of 367 to chase, with things started abjectly when SNGPL were 35 for 3. Things got even worse when they were placed at 103 for 7, but a stunning counter-attacking 106 from Bilawal Bhatti scored 106 at No. 9, but despie that performance, SNGPL still ended up falling short by 93 runs.A nerveless unbeaten 49 by Naeem Anjum in the second innings saw out a tricky 178-run chase for Pakistan Television as they held on to a four-wicket victory over Port Qasim Authority in Lahore. PQA batted first, with the openers putting on 64 for the first wicket. Innings from Faraz Ali (69) and Mohammad Waqas (88), pushed them to 316. Mohammad Ali’s took best figures of 5 for 75. Despite losing their openers with the score on just 11, and then suffering further set backs to be reduced to 51 for 4, Pakistan Television looked under the cosh, but Zeeshan Mushtaq (105) and Yasim Murtaza (70) rallied the team, helping them secure a slim 43-run lead. Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan chipped in with three wickets a piece.PQA’s second innings didn’t go to plan as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite a stirring effort from Shahzaib Hasan, with 105 off 110 balls which included seven fours and four sixes, none of the other batsmen, aside from Sami’s 30, were able to contribute significant scores as PQA were rolled for 220. Waqar Ahmed and Wasim Murtaza did chief damage, taking three wickets each. With 178 runs for victory, Pakistan Television lost opener Haroon Ahmed with the score on just 17. Imran Ali and Nawar Ahmed also went out in quicktime, before a double-strike of consecutive balls from Mohammad Sami left them at a precarius 102, with 76 still required. A calm 59-run partnership between Fahad-ul-Haq and Naeem Anjum ensured they got to the mark, with Anjum finishing off the chase with consecutive boundaries.United Bank Limited beat Water and Power Development Authority by 176 runs to post their first win of the tournament. UBL batted first, with Abid Ali leading the way with his 76. Each of the UBL batsmen chipped in, but failed to go on to post a meaningful total. A couple of forties from Asif Raza and Tariq Haroon were the only notable performances other than Abid Ali as UBL reached 319. WAPDA started promisingly with some good stands up front, but lost their way after reaching 218 for 6, losing the remaining four wickets for the addition of just 42 runs. Aamer Sajjad, the captain, top-scored with 84 while Mohammad Ayub chipped in with 50. Both Mohammad Irshad and Tariq Haroon picked up four wickets each to lead the UBL bowlers’ efforts.UBL’s second innings was anchored by Abid again as he bettered his 76 in the first innings with an unbeaten 101. Khaqan Arsal scored 70 at No. 5, as UBL declared their innings at 242 for 6 with a lead of 302. WAPDA were never really in the chase, as they succumbed to 68 for 7. Only their captain, Sajjad, fought valiantly with his 64 as WAPDA were bundled out for 125, giving UBL a 176-run victory. Some imposing first-innings totals resulted in the match between Pakistan International Airlines and Habib Bank Limited finishing as a stalemate. Both sides were seeking their first win after losing their respective tournament openers. It was PIA who batted first, where innings from Fahad Iqbal (52), Anop Santosh (51) and Anwar Ali (61) helped PIA to 343. Sarmad Anwar and Ehsan Adil took seven wickets between them.Habib Bank’s innings started well, with opener Shan Masood and captain Imran Farhat adding 114 for the second wicket. Masood and No. 6 Rameez Aziz then put on 169 runs together, with Masood finally falling for 140. After Rameez was out on 78, Mohammad Aslam and Abdul Ameer were left not out as the match petered to a draw, with Habib Bank on 411 for 8.

A Procuradoria Geral do Estado vai administrar.

Gambhir: Haven't taken a call on which three Tests Bumrah is going to play

India’s captain and coach confident that squad has enough fast-bowling depth to compensate for Bumrah missing some games

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jun-20252:30

Gambhir: ‘Enough quality in squad to replace Bumrah’

India have not yet decided which Tests in the upcoming five-match series in England Jasprit Bumrah will play, but captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir were confident the depth of their pace attack would make up for his likely absence.”We haven’t taken that call, which three games is he going to play,” Gambhir said during India’s pre-departure press conference in Mumbai. “We are going to have a discussion with him and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important.”When announcing India’s Test squad last month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Bumrah had been advised by medical staff not to risk playing several consecutive Tests as part of his workload management. The precautionary measure came after Bumrah suffered a stress reaction in the back during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January and only returned to action after Mumbai Indians’ first four games in IPL 2025.India’s 18-man Test squad includes Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh as the other specialist fast bowlers, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur the seam-bowling allrounders.Related

“I think we have picked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery and a lot of fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation or any position,” Gill said. “Obviously when you have someone like Jasprit Bumrah, depending on how many matches he would play, whenever he would come back and play the match for us, it would be a great sight for us. But I think we have a great mix of bowlers and a great set of bowlers who can get the job for the team done.Gambhir said: “I have said it before during the Champions Trophy [which Bumrah missed and India won] as well, it will give someone the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent there. I know that he is quality but we have got enough quality apart from him as well in the squad.”The series is India’s first since the retirements of Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Virat Kohli from Test cricket, and Mohammed Shami is also missing from the squad. The five Tests against England will be India’s first in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. They play the first Test at Headingley (from June 20), the second at Edgbaston (from July 2), the third at Lord’s (from July 10), the fourth at Old Trafford (from July 23), and the final at The Oval (from July 31).They begin the tour with a four-day match against India A at Beckenham on the outskirts of London between June 13 and 16.

India have found a settled combination – Dhoni

India have found what their captain MS Dhoni calls a “settled batting and bowling combination” for the remainder of the three Tests in the series against Australia

Sharda Ugra26-Feb-2013MS Dhoni has said India have found a “settled batting and bowling combination” for the remaining three Tests in the series against Australia. It is every indicator that India will go ahead with playing five bowlers, including Ravindra Jadeja as the third spinner, for the remainder of the Test series.Under Dhoni, India have rarely gone in with five bowlers, even if including an allrounder, but the last two Tests – against England in Nagpur and Australia in Chennai – have been different. Dhoni said that playing at home had made the five-bowler choice “a big plan”. Due to the conditions at work, he said, they can perfect the combination at home.Playing overseas with Dhoni as the sixth batsman makes the batting look “weak.” At home, though, including Jadeja in XI has worked, Dhoni said. “With three Tests to come this looks like a very settled batting and bowling combination.”The three spinners put into use on the way to India’s eight-wicket win over Australia in Chennai did not include left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who had taken 20 wickets in the last series against England. The closer the Hyderabad pitch resembles the one in Chennai, the greater the chances of Ojha sitting out of a match on his home ground. Jadeja, who bowls left-arm spin and has far greater batting credentials than Ojha, Dhoni said, had made it into the team as a third spinning option. The choice of Jadeja over Ojha, Dhoni said, had worked for two reasons. Offspinners R Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh had been brought in because Australia had four left-hand batsmen in their top six. “They had lots of left-handers and we assumed the wicket will turn and often it is said the away-going spinner is quite difficult to play,” Dhoni said. The inclusion of Jadeja came about due to his batting abilities over Ojha’s and because he could “bowl long spells and can be conservative in that he can bowl tight”.”That was one of the reasons we said let’s go with two offspinners and one left-arm with Jadeja doing the job.”Jadeja’s presence in the XI, Dhoni said, had automatically meant the captain would come in to bat at No.6, one spot up from his otherwise established slot at No. 7. “Till Jadeja is playing I will have to bat at No. 6 and till he gets comfortable and used to international Test cricket,” Dhoni said. “If he really starts to do really well according to the amount of talent he has, we will think about it [where Jadeja should bat] later.”Dhoni’s elevation to the No.6 spot for the second Test in succession produced his maiden Test double-century, 224 scored at a strike rate of over 84. He was run out in the Nagpur Test for 99. The two innings are different due to the demands of the game, but his approach to batting has stayed the same.”This game was evenly poised and Nathan (Lyon) was bowling well,” Dhoni said. “It was important that you get rid of that extra catching fielder that is around you. So that if you misread a flighted delivery or you go back to a ball that is pitched slightly up, you don’t have that one extra catching fielder to take that inside edge or that bad pat. And it worked well.”Dhoni said the rest of the batting line-up too had played its role even though neither Cheteshwar Pujara got to 50 nor Sachin Tendulkar hundred. “They played for a considerable period of time and the humidity over here, we all know Chennai gets quite humid and bowlers get quiet tired… we were able to bat for more than four sessions, so overall it was a very good effort both by the bowlers and the batsmen.”India’s two medium-pacers in the Chennai Test, Ishant Sharma and debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar, may have bowled between them only 33 of India’s 226 overs in the Test but have given their team, Dhoni said, the options and variety it needed, which as good as ruled out the idea of packing another spinner in Ojha in the XI in Hyderabad. “You have to be sure the wicket will turn,” Dhoni said. “On the first day most of us assumed it will be a turning track. There will be plenty for the spinners. But we saw it was a decent wicket. That’s why you want to be prepared in a situation where you think this is what may happen, but it goes the other way around.”Dhoni said Bhuvneshwar’s ability with the bat had given India another lower-order option and that the extra spinner would have made it difficult to juggle him around the other three. “You can’t make three or four spinners bowl the exact number of overs,” Dhoni said. “You don’t see the number of overs bowled by them before you make a bowling change, you see who looks effective and make a bowling change.”MS Dhoni could likely retain the winning combination for the upcoming games•BCCI

If there was an element of the Indian batting that appeared weak in Chennai it was the opening combination of Virender Sehwag and M Vijay, but Dhoni said he would wait before drawing conclusions. “You need to give them a fair amount of time,” he said. “So let’s hope for the best… Let’s continue with him (Vijay) and give him some time and that comfort of saying he is wanted over here.”When asked whether the memory of the Nagpur 99 had played on his mind, Dhoni said, “I’ve got five 90s so it doesn’t weigh any more – I personally believe it’s the top six batsmen who worry about the 100s. I’ve never thought a lot about hundreds.”Dhoni said he was asked by Dilip Vengsarkar after he had scored 92 at The Oval whether he would have done something different with reference to his dismissal. “I said no, I would bat the same way if I get a chance to hit, I’ll hit. So nothing much has changed… what’s your speciality remains your speciality.”This has been the shakiest period in Dhoni’s captaincy following a home series defeat to England and he said he dealt with the pressure by not reading the newspapers or watching television. “It’s not like I don’t read newspapers,” he said. “But third page from the behind is the sports page, so you try to get rid of it. Because otherwise you don’t know what’s happening in India.

David Warner turns to concrete pitches for batting rhythm

Laughs off talk of poor form and believes he is close to being at his best

Andrew McGlashan27-Oct-2021David Warner has laughed off talk about poor form and believes he is close to finding his best touch, having swapped the practice nets in the UAE for synthetic and concrete surfaces.Warner, who has played five innings in all cricket since April with scores of 0, 2, 0, 1 and 14, revealed the training tactic – something he has previously used at home – was an attempt to overcome nets which are showing the effects of a lot of traffic over the last few months and, he believes, risk bringing bad habits into his batting. He spoke with the Australian coaching staff on tour about making use of the different surfaces, which are available in Dubai, having received a text from batting coach Trent Woodhill who is a long-time mentor. Warner has had balls hurled at him with the ‘wanger’, or dog-thrower, at up to 145kph so that he can get his feet “dancing” ahead of facing a Sri Lanka attack that possesses considerable pace.”One thing that should be noted is these practice wickets have been up for close to 12 weeks now, so training is quite difficult on them as well,” Warner said. “At the moment I’m training on some synthetic wickets and polished concrete to get timing and rhythm and moving my feet so that’s helping me.”When you are practicing on low wickets that aren’t great it gets you into sticky positions in the games when you are on better wickets. You have to get your brain working again with your feet and hands to get into good positions.”You want to feel bat on ball, but it also makes you move your feet more. We are so used to the ball coming onto the bat and when you do that and are moving, you start dancing in the game. If you are practicing bad habits at training because you aren’t able to get that volume in, you have to go back to the basics.”Warner felt positive signs during his 14 off 15 balls against South Africa which included three crisp boundaries before he drove to backward point. He lamented his lack of conviction in the stroke that brought his downfall, saying he was too focused on seeing out what was Kagiso Rabada’s third over of his opening spell.”In hindsight I should have played it over the top, but I pushed it to backward point,” he said. “My feet were moving, I got into great positions, but my awareness should have been to go with it. Felt I was one boundary away from having a good innings”I actually think people talking about my form is quite funny. I laugh at the matter. I’ve played hardly any cricket. Had two games in the IPL and then warm-up games are warm-up games for a reason. The other day I got my benchmark as where I should be at with my feet.”Warner believes the T20 game is not purely about the volume of runs a batter scores but how they fit into the broader team gameplan. “Individuals have to play their roles. It’s not necessarily a big score, it’s how you get 20, 30 or 40 and then if you get that big score it puts you in a great position. You’ve just got to make sure you aren’t soaking up too many balls.”There is also scrutiny of Warner’s opening partner Aaron Finch, who is another to make use of the concrete wickets, after he returned from knee surgery in this tournament. Finch carved to third man for a duck against South Africa although his overall T20I returns in 2021 are far from poor with 324 runs at 32.40, albeit his strike-rate of 126.56 is his lowest for any calendar year since he made his debut. The opening game was the first time Warner and Finch had opened in a T20I since last September against England. They were a key part of the success Australia had in the format in the 2019-2020 season, but that was followed by Warner’s injury last year against India and subsequent unavailability. “It almost seems like we’ve been in retirement and come back after the time we’ve had off,” he said.

Aftab targets revival with Chittagong

Aftab Ahmed

The extent to which a player can go off the radar even in the small world of Bangladesh cricket is personified by Aftab Ahmed, the batsman earmarked for greatness only five years ago but who hasn’t played international cricket since March 2010. Such has been his downturn in fortune, Aftab is merely eyeing a regular place in the Chittagong Kings side in this season’s BPL.”I have to target a place in the playing eleven, this is my first objective,” Aftab said. “If I can make it then I have a plan, which I want to execute. I was a bit shaky in the last BPL but then I thought of shrugging away the shakiness and playing with freedom. I have to do something different otherwise I have no chance of cementing my place.”Between 2004 and 2008, Aftab was one of the most feared strikers of the ball. A free-flowing strokeplayer on the off side, his ability to clear the infield was always breathtaking, though like Mohammad Ashraful he was also susceptible to poor shots. What contributed to his downfall was his lax attitude towards fitness and doing the extra bit in the nets, surprising for a player so dependent on hitting the ball sweetly, and for one of the country’s best fielders inside the circle. And, surprisingly for a cricketer of this day and age, he is candid when he agrees that it has been his lethargy that has kept him out of the limelight for such a long time. “Laziness has got the better of me,” he said. “Even though I try very hard to overcome laziness, even then I have a tough time succeeding. This is the truth, no point lying.”I feel bad sometimes. When I was an established member of the national team, I saw several players making their debut. The same players are now far ahead of me in the pecking order and I am a bit detached from everyone else. So it is normal for me to feel bad.”Aftab was part of the Dhaka Warriors team that took off from the mainstream and joined the Indian Cricket League in 2008. He returned two years later, but was not even half the player he had left as. Those close to him said that his poor work ethic earlier in his career fitted well with the relaxed attitude with which he played in the ICL, eroding his skills further. His plans now centre on domestic cricket, and he has hinted that his career is nearing the end, though he is only 27. “I have no plans as far as making it to the national team is concerned. Whether it is one or two years, I want to enjoy myself before going out from the game,” he said. “Recently, I scored two fifties in the National Cricket League so I want to bow out properly from the domestic circuit before anything else.”What Aftab will enjoy, however, will be playing for Chittagong, his hometown, and in a format he is made for, despite a poor showing in the first BPL with Dhaka Gladiators, when he made just six runs in three innings.”I only got one opportunity last time with Dhaka Gladiators and I did not make full use of it. I was shaky and thought about things too much,” Aftab said. “This hampered my progress. But this time, I am not putting any thoughts in my head. If I get one game, then so be it. I will only enjoy myself.”

'Can't live in past glory' – Harbhajan

Harbhajan Singh has said that he is looking to make a fresh start and is not depending on his past laurels

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Sep-2012Harbhajan Singh, who is back in the India Twenty20 squad for the upcoming New Zealand series and the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka after spending more than a year out of the team, has said that he is looking to make a fresh start and is not depending on his past laurels.”It’s always tough when you are out,” Harbhajan told . “Making a comeback is tougher than earning your maiden international call. It involves a lot of things. When you’re out, you get injured and then again out. It’s always been challenging.”You cannot live in the past glory. For anyone, it does not depend what you’ve done in the past but what you do in the present and future.”Harbhajan’s last international appearance was in the Trent Bridge Test during India’s tour of England in August 2011. A spate of injuries and a dip in form thereafter left him out of reckoning from the national squad. After below par returns during the IPL, Harbhajan set out for a stint playing county cricket for Essex, which helped him get his confidence back. After the news of his selection, he starred in a pro-40 match for Essex with a five-wicket haul.”I won’t say it was frustrating but at times it’s difficult not being part of the side for so long. But you’re used to the set up. Not only me, it can happen to anyone. You are always going to have ups and downs. But when you get the opportunity, you have to stand up and take it in your stride.”Harbhajan said that the upcoming Twenty20s are going to herald a new chapter in his career. “I had the willpower and the desire to wear the India jersey again – it’s the biggest thing for me. It makes me proud,” he said. “It’s not that I was dropped for the first time last year. But it has been for the longest period of time. It makes you feel as if you are doing it for the first time.””I was ready to work hard and take challenge. You get your family and friends’ support, but at the end of the day you’re all alone fighting it out there in the middle. With Almighty’s help, I’m here again and now I’m looking forward towards doing well.”
