Hales withdraws from BPL

Alex Hales, the England and Nottinghamshire opener, will not take part in the controversial Bangladesh Premier League which starts next week

Andrew McGlashan12-Jan-2013Alex Hales, the England and Nottinghamshire opener, will not take part in the controversial Bangladesh Premier League which starts next week even though none of the international players due to appear in the tournament has yet received a contract.Hales had been bought at the auction by Duronto Rajshahi and insisted he would join the event despite strong concerns from the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) who remain extremely worried about payment and contract issues.Hales recently joined Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League as a replacement for the injured Marlon Samuels and enhanced his reputation by smashing 89 off 52 balls just hours after stepping off a place from England. He is guaranteed at least one more BBL match with the Renegades in a semi-final against Brisbane Heat on Tuesday and, it is understood, that has been enough for him to have a change of heart over the BPL, for which he would only have been available for a short period before reporting for Twenty20 duty with England on the New Zealand tour.Hales, along with Nottinghamshire team-mates Michael Lumb and Samit Patel, has been barred by his county from putting his name forward for this year’s IPL as it clashes with the English county season.Currently, Luke Wright, who like Hales will not be available for the whole tournament, is still set to take up his BPL deal.Angus Porter, the chief executive of the PCA, said that none of the promises made by the BPL organisers ahead of the second running of the event have been delivered. “We are five days away from the tournament and there had been a promise that contracts would be delivered well in advance,” he said. “This hasn’t happened, and now there’s no chance it will happen before the event.”I still fully expect some international players to take part, but they will be heading into another unknown situation with very few assurances. I would really like the BPL to work, Bangladesh cricket needs it to be a success, but history tells us that it looks unlikely at the moment.”The problems do not stop at the international stars, either. ESPNcricinfo understands that some of the Barisal players are refusing to sign No Objection Certificates for their franchises until they are paid last year’s fees.

Peters and Newton dig in

ScorecardRob Newton and James Middlebrook dug Northamptonshire out of potential trouble at West End with an unbroken stand of 72 after hosts Hampshire had threatened to get on top.Only 48 overs were possible because of morning rain, with the visitors reaching 170 for 5 after Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams decided to field first on a green wicket which helped his seamers early on.Niall O’Brien was first out for 20 in the sixth over, chasing an out-swinger from left -arm pace bowler James Tomlinson and giving wicketkeeper Michael Bates an easy catch. From that moment Northants went through a difficult period slumping to 98 for 5 before Newton and Middlebrook began the rescue with a defiant late partnership.Experienced second-wicket pair of David Sales and Stephen Peters took the score to 59 before David Balcombe, another bowler for whom the conditions were ideal, bowled Sales. Peters was third out at 87, held at slip by Liam Dawson off Chris Wood at the start of a spell in which three wickets fell in four overs.Peters had held up Hampshire with a brave 47 from 74 balls but in the next over Alex Wakely followed him back to the dressing room after edging Balcombe to Adams in the slips.Tomlinson came back to remove Andrew Hall to another edge into the slips, Adams again the catcher, and suddenly Northants were struggling. Then Newton and Middlebrook came together and although they had some uneasy moments, managed to survive until stumps on the first day of the Championship clash. Adams used six bowlers in a bid to prise them apart including left arm spinner Dawson but they held on to the close.Newton struck a six off Sean Ervine and six fours in his unbeaten 46 while the circumspect Middlebrook was 26 not out as their sixth wicket stand gleaned from 20 overs.Tomlinson took 2 for 27 and Balcombe, rediscovering his early-season form, had taken 2 for 16 from 12 accurate and testing overs.Hampshire, in second place and seeking an instant return to Division One, left out injured Dimitri Mascarenhas and batsman Bilal Shafayat from their squad to accommodate pace bowler Wood.

Who signalled the Powerplay?

Confusion over India’s batting Powerplay in the first ODI has become a laughing matter three days after the event but it reveals a serious loophole in on-field communication

Abhishek Purohit in Hambantota24-Jul-2012Confusion over India’s batting Powerplay in the first ODI has become a laughing matter three days after the event but it reveals a serious loophole in on-field communication. In the end, though, India got away with what seems like a wrongly interpreted signal by the umpires and the batsmen’s failure to cross-check with them. The problem originated before the 17th over, when Virat Kohli signalled to the dressing room for a cap. The umpires, though, seemed to think it was an indication of the batting Powerplay being taken, and Bruce Oxenford signalled accordingly with the circular motion of the arm and a tapping of hands above the head. The TV commentators on Ten Sports then referred – with some surprise – to the batting Powerplay, which is normally taken by sides after the 30th over. The (mis)information also sparked some debate over India’s radical new strategy. Only Mahela Jayawardene seemed to have got it right and set his field accordingly, and took his bowling Powerplay from the 34th over.India’s batsmen – Kohli and Virender Sehwag – seemed unaware, and did not visibly change their approach during the five-over period, in which India collected 32 for 0. The penny dropped for the Indians only later in the innings, when they sought the batting Powerplay and were told it had already been taken. The matter then ended there, but Sehwag spoke about it on Monday. “When I asked the umpire he said that Virat Kohli gave him the signal to take the Powerplay,” Sehwag said during the press conference at the team hotel on Monday. “When I asked Virat he said I asked [for] my cap rather than asking [for] the Powerplay, so that was a misunderstanding I think.”

PCB chief invited to IPL final

The BCCI has invited Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf to watch the final of the IPL to be played in Chennai on May 27

ESPNcricinfo staff20-May-2012The BCCI has invited Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf to watch the IPL final to be played in Chennai on May 27. Ashraf confirmed that he received the invitation from the Indian board a few days ago.”I see the invitation as another positive step forward in further normalising bilateral cricket ties between the two countries,” Ashraf said. “The invitation will allow me to undertake a two-day visit to India and I plan to use this visit to have informal discussions with the Indian board officials regarding enhancing chances of restoring bilateral cricket ties.”Recently, the BCCI had announced that it had no objection to the participation of Pakistan T20 title-holders Sialkot Stallions in this year’s Champions League Twenty20 tournament, a move welcomed by the PCB.”We want to play India regularly in bilateral matches and we are willing to talk to them at every level to achieve this,” Ashraf said. “I will be speaking to them on this when I go to India.”The PCB had been pushing for the inclusion of a side from Pakistan, the only major Test-playing nation to not have had teams in the CLT20 since its inception. Sialkot were invited to the inaugural edition of the tournament towards the end of 2008, but it was put off after the terror attacks in Mumbai in November that year. Those attacks strained political relations between India and Pakistan and, subsequently, bilateral cricketing ties between the two countries were severed. Pakistan players – with the exception of Azhar Mahmood (who also has a British passport) this year – have not been a part of the IPL since.

Handscomb, Quiney give Victoria good start

Peter Handscomb scored his first century in first-class cricket and Rob Quiney also reached triple-figures on a good day for Victoria in Adelaide

ScorecardRob Quiney was one of two centurions for Victoria•Getty ImagesPeter Handscomb scored his first century in first-class cricket and Rob Quiney also reached triple-figures on a good day for Victoria in Adelaide. In the first Sheffield Shield match since the hiatus that allowed the Big Bash League to take centre stage, Victoria reached 7 for 344 at stumps on the first day against South Australia. And while there were plenty of runs in the pitch, as Handscomb and Quiney showed in a 225-run partnership, the day didn’t go so well for Victoria’s captain Cameron White. Having recently been stripped of Australia’s Twenty20 captaincy after a lean BBL, White was caught at slip for 3 off the bowling of Jake Haberfield.White had come to the crease after Quiney departed for 114, his sixth first-class hundred. It was a brisk innings from Quiney, who struck 14 fours and three sixes in his 145-ball stay, which ended when he was caught behind off Tom Cooper. In his fourth first-class game, Handscomb survived a couple of dropped chances on 11 and 15 and made the most of the opportunities. He was eventually bowled by Peter George for 113 and South Australia did well to limit the output of the middle order. By stumps, Victoria were relying on Will Sheridan, who was on 31, and Jayde Herrick, who had made 10.

PNG favourites on home soil

The chances for the smaller cricket nations to reach the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in 2012 have been reduced now that the tournament will again be a 12-team event rather than 16

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-2011

Papua New Guinea have enjoyed considerable success in recent times•ICC/Cricket Europe

The chances for the smaller cricket nations to reach the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in 2012 have been reduced now that the tournament will again be a 12-team event rather than 16, but there are still two places up for grabs for Associate and Affiliate nations. Those from the Asia-Pacific region have reached their final stage of qualifying for the global play-off in UAE early next year. Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Japan and hosts Papua New Guinea will take part in a four-day event in Port Moresby to determine which team travels to the Middle East.Papua New Guinea have sped up the rankings in the last 12 months and now sit at No. 19 in the world, but that success brings with it added pressure of being hosts and favourites.According to wicketkeeper Jack Vare, preparations have been going exceptionally well for the team, who are coached by Andy Bichel, and they are determined not to waste an opportunity to perform at their peak on the turf wickets of Amini Park and Colts Cricket Ground.”Representing your country in front of your family and friends is a great honour,” Vare said. “It is great to be able to show them the exciting and entertaining brand of cricket the Hebou Barramundis can play and demonstrating the spirit of PNG through the game of cricket. Although there is the added pressure of playing on home soil, I know all the players are excited and looking forward to the tournament.”Fiji are looming as the team most capable of toppling the seemingly invincible PNG. With an extremely busy international schedule ahead for the national team, including the tournament in PNG, the South Pacific Games and then World Cricket League Division 6 in the next three months, preparation has been more important than ever before and allrounder Kitione Tavo was happy with the level the team have reached.”Training has been good and I think our preparation is going well,” Tavo said. “There’s a great feeling among the team this year.”Fiji have also been boosted by the return of two players, who have been out of the national side for a number of years. Fast bowler Imran Kahn returns after a six-year absence, teaching in the USA, and Jikoi Kida returns after a stint in Egypt with the Fijian army.Japan will enter the tournament with new-found confidence after an intense couple of months of training since their last tournament. It has been well documented that Japan performed considerably below the standard they expect of themselves at the recent World Cricket League Division 7 event in Botswana. However coach Chris Ferguson is confident his side can learn from the mistakes made and begin the rebuilding process in PNG.”That is the nature of international cricket,” Ferguson said. “There is always another tournament coming up and you need to respond quickly. We made mistakes in Botswana but the players have reviewed their own performances, been honest with themselves and the team, and have put in a lot of hard work over the past six weeks to rectify the problems that we encountered.”With an average age of under 23, Vanuatu will be the youngest side competing in Port Moresby. After a strong showing at the Regional Under-19 event in February, when they finished second behind PNG, Vanuatu will be hoping their young talent can demonstrate the mental toughness required to match it with the best senior developing countries in the region.”We are pleased with the progress we are making but understand we are in for some tough battles,” captain Andrew Mansale said.Despite fielding a side with seven players who are 21 years or under, Mansale is confident that his side can compete. “We are expecting all teams to be tough, we have worked very hard with our fitness trainer Brett Wright for 20 weeks now and have been working hard with a special emphasis on running between the wickets and bowling and batting variations.”Samoa are the only Affiliate participating in the ICC EAP Division 1, but that is of little concern to their squad who plan to make a real impact against the four Associate sides. The Samoan team breezed through Division 2 in April undefeated, and have been preparing in New Zealand to take the next step up. “Samoa will go into the tournament as, no doubt, underdogs,” Samoan Cricket general manager Andrew Flynn said. “However members of the team are fit, healthy, ready to compete and will be carrying the pride of Samoa with them.”Former New Zealand bowler Murphy Su’a will coach the side, which despite having a wealth of older more experienced players in their line-up, will need some young talents like Tiafala Alatasi to perform well with the ball if they are to make a genuine impact in Port Moresby.”If I can limit the runs and do my job, and each of us do our job, we will do well,” Alatasi said, who was the leading wicket-taker at the Division 2 event in April.

Boyd Rankin and Jeetan Patel then took five quick wickets between them to leave hosts Sussex in danger of an innings defeat. However, an unbroken partnership of 87 between Luke Wright (75 not out) andOllie Rayner (29 not out) ensured the game will go to the fourth day with Sussexstill trailing by 29 on 201 for 5 at the close.Warwickshire took full control of the game in the morning as Keith Barker andClarke stretched their seventh-wicket stand to 79. Wright broke the partnership with his fifth ball of the morning when he had Barker caught behind by Andrew Hodd driving at a wide ball for 52.Monty Panesar trapped Chris Metters lbw for six but Patel maintainedWarwickshire’s momentum with a quickfire 21, which included a huge six offPanesar. The England spinner gained revenge when Patel top-edged a slog to midwicket tofinish with figures of 3 for 88 from 44 overs.Clarke launched Rayner for three sixes down the ground on his way to aseason-best score but he was left stranded when Rankin gloved a lifting deliveryfrom Amjad Khan to Hodd. Sussex’s hopes of salvaging the game took a massive hit inside the opening six overs as they lost both openers.Chris Nash (nine) tried to get his bat out of the way of a delivery from Rankinbut only succeeded in getting an inside edge onto his stumps and Joyce (14) wastrapped lbw by the Ireland bowler to leave Sussex wobbling at 35 for 2.Murray Goodwin batted for more than an hour to score 10 but his vigil endedwhen he played no shot to a straight ball from Patel and was lbw. Luke Wells (32) had already survived a run out opportunity going for a suicidal single when he gave his wicket away by charging down the wicket to Patel and was stumped by Tim Ambrose.Patel claimed his third wicket when Hodd tried to sweep a ball which was toofull and was bowled to reduce Sussex to 114 for 5. With Rana Naved-ul-Hasan unlikely to bat after going to hospital for a scan on a shoulder injury, Warwickshire scented victory inside three days only to be held up by Wright and Rayner.

Rangers must complete Gilmour transfer

Rangers may have failed to regain their SPFL title this season, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Gers still made it to the Europa League final and the Scottish Cup final.

In their 38 league games, the Ibrox club found the net 80 times in total, 26 more than their upcoming Cup final opponents in third place.

One figure that has played a big part in Rangers’ season is midfielder Joe Aribo, who has played in 56 games across all competitions.

In those appearances, the 25-year-old has scored nine goals and provided ten assists along the way.

While Van Bronckhorst’s side still have one more chance to get their hands on some silverware this weekend to end their season on a positive note, the club will then have the upcoming summer transfer window to make any changes to their squad that they see fit.

In terms of potential incomings, one player that has been linked with a move to Ibrox that could come in and form a scary duo in midfield with Aribo is Billy Gilmour.

Since leaving Rangers’ U17 squad back in 2017 to make his move to Chelsea, the midfielder has gone on to make 66 appearances for their U18 and U23 sides, scoring 16 goals and providing 13 assists in the process.

At senior level, the Scotsman has played in 22 games for Chelsea’s first team and 28 times for Norwich City during his loan spell there this season.

The former Rangers youth star found himself on the receiving end of some hefty praise from Roy Keane who described him as looking like a “world-class” player.

To highlight the 20-year-old’s strengths on the pitch, no other midfielder in Norwich’s squad attempted as many passes in the league this season as Gilmour did.

With that in mind, the Scotland international could give Aribo the chance to get into more goalscoring or goal-creating situations and ramp his numbers up in that regard.

This would surely give the Gers a better chance of being successful domestically and in Europe next season.

If the west London club are willing to let their midfield ace leave Stamford Bridge on another loan deal this summer, Rangers should definitely be in the mix to secure his signature.
