Newcastle: Stephy Mavididi would be a huge gamble

In the end, it was a solid season for Newcastle, who ended the season in 13th place, way ahead of the relegation zone. Yet, there are now so many questions ahead of the new season. Will Rafa Benitez still be the manager? Will Mike Ashley still be the owner? Who will Newcastle sign? The questions are seemingly endless. So, while we cannot yet answer them, we can certainly speculate. So, who have Newcastle been linked with thus far? Well, news emerging in the last few days is that the Magpies are interested in former Arsenal man and now Juventus attacker Stephy Mavididi. Indeed, Team Talk have reported that Newcastle are one of a number of clubs who have asked Juventus about the possibility of taking the 21-year-old on-loan.Clearly, Newcastle are in serious need of attacking reinforcements. Solomon Rondon, who won Player of the Year last season, has now returned to West Brom after completing his loan spell and the Birmingham Mail have reported that the Venezuelan forward is to be offered to Fenerbahce, with the current manager and owner questions at Newcastle placing doubt on a deal.Furthermore, the Sun have reported that Wolves are also interested in Rondon, who has a £16.5m release clause in his contract. This isn’t to say last season’s No.9 shall not be returning to Newcastle, but it’s important to mention the man Mavididi would be replacing. Frankly, he would certainly have big shoes to fill, after Rondon netted 11 times and claimed seven assists in 32 league games last season. Now, how do Mavididi’s stats compare? Well, not particularly well. The forward has made just one appearance for Juventus, making little impact but he does have six goals in 27 games for Juventus’ U-23 side, which is certainly encouraging. Still, his goal record in England perhaps doesn’t match. The 2017-18 season saw the Englishman loaned out both the Charlton and Preston – League One and the Championship respectively where he totalled two goals in 24 appearances. Worrying.Of course, Mavdidi is still only 21-years-old and yes, he certainly has time to develop. But at this stage of his career, he must be recognised as nothing more than a prospect. While Newcastle may indeed be looking at him as a signing for the future, he simply cannot be brought to the club as Rondon’s replacement – it’s just too big a risk. The whole team only scored 42 goals over the course of the Premier League campaign, after all. Yes, signing young players is exciting and comes with obvious merits but relying on a player of this profile if Rondon does depart to bring goals to the team seems really rather reckless.Newcastle fans, what do you think of the situation? Will Rondon return next season? How would you view the potential incoming? Comment below.

Spurs fans concerned about Danny Rose future

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left concerned by the future of left-back Danny Rose, who has confirmed that his final game for the club could come in the Champions League final, per The Guardian.

The full-back faces an uncertain summer, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino set to revamp his squad in the summer transfer window.

The former Leeds United star says that he has continually seen his own name linked with an exit and that he is desperate to go out with a bang if he is to depart.

He said: “I keep seeing my name that I’m being sold, so if that’s the case and it’s going to be my last game for Tottenham against Liverpool, I’m hoping to go out with a bang and lift a trophy.

“It’s a Champions League final so individual situations have to take a back seat and you have to put the club first. We are going to do that. We do realise we have a chance to make history.”

Spurs face Liverpool in the final in Madrid on June 1, having overcome Ajax in the most dramatic of circumstances on Wednesday evening. Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick, with his third goal coming in the final minute of injury-time.

The Reds, meanwhile, beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate and Spurs fans are clearly concerned about the prospect of the England international leaving this summer.

Beyond stressful: Leeds fans are hating the conclusion to the promotion race

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans have been showing their nerves on Twitter after Phil Hay shared his thoughts on the promotion race with Sheffield United.

The Whites are back in control in the race for second with the Blades after Chris Wilder’s men dropped points at St Andrew’s on Wednesday night.

This is the third time the tide has turned in the title race in recent weeks with both Yorkshire clubs unable to gain any long-term advantage over the other.

Whilst many neutrals are loving the drama of the promotion race Leeds fans are hating it as it takes over their lives for the final weeks of the season.

Prominent Leeds United journalist Phil Hay tweeted “You’ve got to love this. Fantastic scrap for second. Title is gone, Norwich will win that, but can’t see anything other than a cigarette paper between Leeds and Sheff Utd.”

The Yorkshire Evening post journalist is seemingly enjoying the final few weeks of the season whilst supporters are feeling the opposite as they just want it over and done with.

Leeds fans struggled to echo Hay’s sentiment of loving the battle for Premier League football as their nerves can’t handle the prospect of Leeds missing out on promotion after coming so close.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

Carlos Corberan is Leeds United’s best chance at future success

Leeds United are in capable hands if Marcelo Bielsa understudy Carlos Corberan leads the club in years to come.

To take a spot in the school of one of the most influential managers in the modern era, at least by Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino’s reckoning, is no easy feat – but Corberan has managed it. And deservedly so.

Carlos Corberan may only be 35-years-old but a career at the top level of coaching has been a long time coming with 12 years of experience to his name, and if his recent success with the under-23s is anything to go by (via Leeds-Live) then he is going to be quite the leader.

A Valencia academy player who never made it past the third tier of Spanish football, the Spaniard admitted he always saw his future outside of the playing realm. “I finished my career pretty fast,” he told Yorkshire Evening Post, “and I was 23 when I started to feel like my future would be more in coaching than as a player.”

Corberan was blooded at Villareal in 2006 when Spanish football was undergoing a major transition thanks to the ‘tiki-taka’ master Pep Guardiola. Both the Spanish national team, who enjoyed serious success in the ensuing years, and Villareal adapted their models, to match that of the former Barcelona man. He admits that this cataclysmic shakeup shaped his educational experience and coaching style: “From this moment there was a link between Guardiola and the Spanish national team and the style of Villarreal was in the same direction. It gave me new ideas about how you can train teams and what the best methodology is to have one style of play. It’s something that goes inside of you. It changes your mind and changes your feelings towards football.”

Indeed, to experience a change first-hand and to study one posthumously is a completely different experience. You get a tangible feel for it; the subtle shifts and differences that are often overlooked by scribes and commentators; the feedback from players who are adapting their game; the ways a coach can successfully harness the new style and things you must avoid for the future.

Interestingly, it is widely considered that Guardiola’s football is an extension of Bielsa’s (Yorkshire Evening Post) – and Corberan is tapping straight into that well of knowledge as we speak.

If the Spaniard is the man to inherit the Leeds United job, then he is certainly qualified enough to do it – at least in theory, anyhow.

Leeds United fans, do you think Carlos Corberan is the man for the job? Let us know in the comments below…

Pundit View: Crystal Palace target Said Benrahma has caused a media storm this season

[ad_pod ]

According to Teamtalk, Crystal Palace are keen on signing Brentford prospect Said Benrahma, whose sensational form in the second tier this season has also attracted the interest from West Ham, Spurs, Arsenal, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

The Algerian, who many are tipping to be the next Riyad Mahrez, has chalked up nine goals and 11 assists in the Championship this campaign despite having only arrived from Nice in the summer – talk about hitting the ground running.

The Bees clearly know they have got a real talent on their hands and have slapped an eye-watering £30m price tag on their star man to either ward off interest or make a handsome profit.

The 23-year-old is certainly highly thought of by both Brentford and the aforementioned clubs, but what are the experts saying about him? Read on to find out.

Thomas Frank, Brentford boss

Brentford boss Thomas Frank obviously knows Benrahma well, here’s what he said after a big victory:

“When he plays like that, he is a joy to watch. He’s exciting every time he gets the ball because he can create something out of nothing. It is like magic and very few teams in this league have that.

“His finishing has got better and better but his assists are also incredible. His run and pass for Kamohelo Mokotjo made that the most beautiful goal of the day for me.

“He is growing more and more composed and when he runs at defences he is terrifying because he can go left or right. When players mark him he’ll pass the ball for another of our front three to do some damage.”

Frank waxed lyrical about the number 21 after a 5-1 thumping of Hull in February and with good reason – Benrahma netted a hat-trick and provided an assist to boot, with one of his strikes also winning him the Championship goal of the month award.

This was the first time in his short career at Griffin Park that the winger had netted more than once in a game and some hat-trick it was. Hopefully there are more to come.

Sam Saunders, ex-Brentford midfielder

Speaking to Sky Sports, ex-Brentford man Sam Saunders said:

“I trained with him and I know it’s a big shout but he is a little bit like Lionel Messi in the way he can run with the ball with pace.

“It just doesn’t leave his foot, it’s like it’s velcroed on.

Esteemed praise from the 35-year-old. Indeed, Benrahma’s ability to sprint full speed at helpless defenders yet somehow never lose control of the ball is unique and something you rarely see at the top level, let alone in the Championship.

This a technique which Lionel Messi has mastered and, while Benrahma will never be able to match the otherworldly exploits of the wonderful Argentine, it’s easy to understand why the parallel has been drawn.

Dean Ashton, ex-player and pundit

The Sky Sports pundit had this to say on the Championship sensation:

“He has been superb but I think we’d have to see him perform this well for longer to think he could do it for one of those clubs [Arsenal or Chelsea].

“But, certainly, you’d think for the bottom half Premier League sides he’s worth a look because he could be a real exciting option for them.”

Having been linked with some of the biggest teams in Europe, the prospect of making the jump from the English second tier to Champions League football is surely a daunting one for Benrahma.

However, the likes of James Maddison and David Brooks have proven this campaign that the step up to one of the lesser teams in the Premier League – Palace included – is far more straight-forward.

Was Darren Moore’s sacking unfair? The Pl>ymaker FC squad name which EPL bosses should have gone instead in the video below…

Verdict

If Benrahma can bring even half the goal contributions he has provided at Brentford to Selhurst Park, he would be a huge hit and well worth the eight-figure price tag given his scope for future improvement.

With Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha holding down the wings at Palace, the Bees wide-man will have some task on his hands to get into the starting XI in the first place, let alone get 20-plus goal contributions in the top flight. The move would represent a huge amount of risk for the Eagles but their squad is ageing and he could become quite the player.

United fans react as historic trend continues with Nemanja Matic pulling out of Serbia squad

[ad_pod ]

It was announced by Manchester United on Wednesday morning that midfielder Nemanja Matic has been forced to pull out of the Serbia squad with injury.

The news followed bizarrely similar cases with three other members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, England’s Luke Shaw, France’s Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof of Sweden, all of which were in shape before the international break.

Remarkably, Romelu Lukaku also looks set to withdraw from the latest Belgium squad as European nations get their EURO 2020 qualification campaigns underway.

But are United fans buying that these injuries and absences are genuine? You bet your bottom dollar they’re not as many are expecting the same foul play they saw at Old Trafford many years ago.

It was a common occurrence during the Sir Alex Ferguson era for Red Devils stars to pull out of their national squads with injury only to appear fine the other side of the break and multiple supporters expect the same this time around.

Check out some of their best reactions poking fun as the comical trend continues, below…

Liverpool fans discuss possible Jurgen Klopp replacement

According to The Athletic journalist James Pearce, Pepijn Lijnders could be considered as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp when the German eventually decides to leave his position as Liverpool manager.

There are certainly no indications that Klopp is considering his future at Anfield having only recently signed a new deal, but Pearce said that a replacement might be needed in the summer of 2024.

The journalist claimed that Lijnders – currently assistant manager of the Reds – could be a part of the conversation should the job become available.

Meanwhile, Pearce also claimed that RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann would be considered if the 32-year-old continues to impress.

Some of the Liverpool fans would welcome Lijnders being given a chance.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

However, others would prefer Nagelsmann, who left Hoffenheim to take charge of Leipzig last summer, to be given the chance to replace Klopp.

Their preference for Nagelsmann is by no means surprising. He was linked with Spurs as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pochettino and is overseeing a fine season a Leipzig.

As well as being third in the Bundesliga, they’ve just progressed from the first knockout round of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, a number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting to an update surrounding one of their key midfielders.
