UAE more worried by storm than WI

Jason Holder refused to worry about the weather in Napier, but UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir did not want his team’s journey home disrupted

Firdose Moonda in Napier14-Mar-2015The Southern Ocean sparkles a shade of aquamarine, a gentler colour than the sapphire of the Mediterranean or the Indian. Its waves lap against the shoreline, so softly that they seem to want to mitigate against the harsh texture of the black pebble beach. The surface does not look the most comfortable place to sunbathe but with the sun’s golden rays creating a mirage, it’s magical in its own way. So much so, that if you strolled down Napier’s Marine Parade on Saturday morning, you would not believe there was a storm on the way.But 3,000 kilometres north, Cyclone Pam has lashed the island of Vanuatu where it is being called the worst weather system in 30 years. It is heading towards New Zealand’s north-east and is expected to make landfall late Sunday night but the precursor to it – rain and wind – could arrive before that and it may find its way to McLean Park. Currently the forecast is for drizzle and heavier rain later; a no-result will send West Indies crashing out of the World Cup.Under the circumstances, Jason Holder could be looking anxiously to the heavens – which remained cloudless on Saturday afternoon – and hoping, but the young captain has chosen to stare straight ahead in his approach to the crunch game. “It’s not on my mind at all. We can’t play the weather,” he said. “If it comes, it comes.”Instead, it is the UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir who is monitoring the weather updates, albeit for a slightly different reason. “I am worried about the cyclone. We’ve got a flight back on Monday. It has been a very long hectic tour, although we have enjoyed it, and we need to go back safely,” Mohammad Tauqir said.Irrespective of the result, UAE will leave New Zealand on Monday and head back to the Emirates by mid-week but, unlike some of the other sides, their players will not able to take break after six weeks on the road. “Our employers are waiting for us,” Tauqir said. His self-titled “amateur” side all have day jobs – those who are not Emirati citizens, which is most of the squad, would not be able to stay in the country if they did not – and this tournament was more about the experience than the outcome. On that front, they have enjoyed every bit of it.”We started well in the games against Zimbabwe and Ireland and then we had one bad game against India. Even against Pakistan and South Africa, it was a decent performance from our side. It has been long but we got a few good breaks between games,” Tauqir said. “We would like to end this tournament on a winning note.”With UAE talking like a side with one foot on the plane, West Indies may be more confident of their chances of doing what they need to do to advance, even though they have left it late and irrespective of the weather.”Any team would have loved to qualified by now and we’ve been up and down but I have confidence in the guys to produce what is needed,” Holder said. “I can’t say we’ve been horrible. What is important is that we forget the past. The better we do, the better our chances later in the quarter finals as well.”The World Cup has already seen one weather system, tropical cyclone Marcia, which passed through Brisbane and washed out the match between Australia and Bangladesh but has not had any other significant weather interruptions.

Acordei desesperado e corri pra a TV.

– Seleção é retorno do trabalho.

Micromax bags series title rights for 2014-15

Micromax has bagged the BCCI’s series title sponsorship rights for Rs 20.02 million per match for all international cricket to be played in India in the 2014-15 season

Micromax has bagged the BCCI’s series title sponsorship rights for Rs 20.02 million per match for all international cricket to be played in India in the 2014-15 season. India are scheduled to play one home series in this period, against the West Indies. Micromax will also be entitled to title rights for five major domestic tournaments including the Ranji Trophy. The rights were awarded when the BCCI marketing committee opened the bid documents in the presence of Micromax officials, who submitted the lone bid, in Mumbai on Thursday. The BCCI has once again failed to attract sponsors for international cricket in India. Star India, the lone bidder for the 2013-14 cycle, won the rights last year at the base price of Rs 20 million.Sanjay Patel, the BCCI secretary, attributed the lack of market interest to “only one series slated for the rights cycle”. Patel said the board was delighted to have a new corporate on board. The BCCI expects more corporate interest for the next rights cycle.”By the time the next tender would be floated, market conditions would have improved,” Patel said. “Besides, the new FTP cycle would have started and we will be better placed to evaluate the situation.”

There are still two matches left for the visitors to square the scoreline.Delissa Kimmince led the contributions from the batting order with a steady 43 off 48 balls, before late acceleration from Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry took the score to a challenging 5 for 149.Kimmince and Elyse Villani put up another half-century opening stand after Australia opted to bat. Villani compiled a quick 31 before she was dismissed by left-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf. Kimmince and Meg Lanning then put together 46 for the second wicket to set up the base for a late-overs launch. However, Pakistan fought back with three wickets in the space of three overs, including two in the 16th, before Perry and Healy countered with 30 off the final three overs.By the 10th over of their chase, Pakistan had stumbled to 4 for 46, their top order succumbing to Sarah Coyte, Erin Osborne and Kimmince. Sana Mir held on and scored 16 off 24 balls but the early damage had put the equation out of Pakistan’s reach.

Surrey prevail after Roy's early blitz

For the sixth time in 12 seasons, Surrey have made their way to Finals Day, this time at the expense of Worcestershire

Vithushan Ehantharajah at The Oval02-Aug-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMatt Dunn was the pick of the Surrey attack, bowling with pace and accuracy•Getty ImagesFor the sixth time in 12 seasons, Surrey have made their way to Finals Day, this time at the expense of Worcestershire. The scorecard suggests the game was close but, as Surrey captain Gary Wilson admitted at the end of the game, they made it hard for themselves. Victory with 21 balls to spare tells it better than the three wickets in hand.Surrey were favourites going into the game. At the halfway stage, those odds had shortened with the hosts needing 142 for victory – small fry, here, where all six targets under 160 have been chased with ease this season (Surrey responsible for five, Middlesex the other, when they adopted The Oval for a ‘home’ game against Somerset). After five overs, with 64 on the board, 52 from the bat of Jason Roy, off just 20 balls, all bets were off. As well as Jack Shantry and Joe Leach bowled to peg things back, with figures of 2 for 26 and 2 for 22 respectively, it was only a succession of Surrey middle order brain fades that gave them a chance.Kevin Pietersen looked like he would see things through, going along at a run a ball – above the rate required. But, once he failed to clear mid-off and Rory Burns was run out brilliantly by Brett D’Oliveira three balls later, panic set in. Three overs later, Azhar Mahmood top-edged to fine leg before Zafar Ansari was surprised by some bounce from Colin Munro to leave them needing another 14 with three wickets remaining.Who knows how close things would have been without Roy’s barrage. Regulars at The Oval will be familiar with his ability to thump through the line and drive along the practice squares, all while maintaining a solid base and fluid follow-through. They were treated to a new trick here, when he swapped hands and somehow managed to hit Shantry over square leg for a once-bounce four. Shantry stood there, mid-pitch, more in annoyance than awe, before meeting Roy’s gaze and furrowing his brow. His half-century came up with a straight six – his third maximum in a boundary count that also included eight fours. It was down to Robin Peterson to see Surrey home, keeping his head to close out the game with a six over midwicket and a nicely timed drive through mid-off.Worcestershire were far from reckless in their innings but the approach of keeping dot balls to a minimum early on was ballsy; tip and run against arguably the best in-fielding side in the competition was always going to result in casualties. Sadly for them, it was Daryl Mitchell, captain and leading run scorer, who succumbed to it. Having lapped Jade Dernbach around the corner, he kept his eyes on the ball as it arrived on the bounce to Matt Dunn, before turning to look at his partner Richard Oliver, who had already made it halfway. Dunn’s throw was near perfect; Dernbach finished it off and Worcestershire were 19 for 1 after three overs.Surrey’s bowlers rarely ceded control, pegging the opposition back after every moment of resistance. When Ross Whiteley used his sharp bat speed to hit Gareth Batty for four and six, he was bowled the next ball, eliciting the usual vein-popping scream from Batty. Joe Leach thumped Dunn over square leg for six and inside out through cover for four as 14 runs came off the 16th over, before he was embarrassed by a slower-ball from the back of Dernbach’s hand that dipped under his mistimed hack across the line and on to the base of his off stump.Oliver’s 34, at less than a run a ball, featured two fours – though not for want of trying. He fell swinging across to line to one of the few loose balls he received: a short one from Peterson, which surprised him with a lack of bounce. The pick of the Surrey’s attack was Dunn, who served up four overs of the sort of pace that had you wincing on the edge of your seat. Touching 90 mph, his second wicket left one of Ben Cox’s stumps standing. It was so savage that the ground needed repairing before the stumps could be reassembled.Along with Roy, Dunn is another that has had England scouts asking after his performances. This has been a brighter season for Surrey than many expected. Sitting second in Division Two and now with a second consecutive appearance at Finals Day for their diary, they will go to Edgbaston as the most exciting and destructive team of the T20 Blast.

BCCI seeks new IPL probe panel

The BCCI has objected to the Justice Mukul Mudgal commission being asked to follow up on their findings into allegations of betting and spot-fixing in the IPL. The BCCI, at a hearing on Tuesday, said it wanted the Supreme Court to form a new panel as it had found the Mudgal committee’s report “erroneous”. At the hearing on Tuesday, the BCCI counsel also asked the court to reinstate N Srinivasan to his office as BCCI president while the probe was being conducted. The Supreme Court on Tuesday, reserved its order about the panel to investigate the allegations against 13 “very important personalities” in cricket. It is however, expected to issue an interim order regarding the composition of the second IPL corruption probe panel within a few days. The next hearing of the case will only be in September, after the court-appointed panel has completed its investigation. At a previous hearing on April 22, the Supreme Court when presented with the BCCI’s selection of a three-member panel to look into the IPL corruption, had asked the Justice Mudgal committee to respond to the court’s invitation to resume its investigation. The Mudgal panel had agreed to continue the investigation and on Tuesday, its counsel Gopal Subramaniam handed over a note from the panel detailing the assistance it would require and said that it would complete its investigations within four months. The Mudgal panel also stated: “As this committee was appointed with the consent of the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bihar, in the earlier order, the Committee requests that a similar consent may be obtained again.” It is possible that the formation of an entirely new panel to investigate the allegations would be considered impractical because it would increase the potential for the information in the sealed envelope being leaked.

Mudgal commission seeks assistance for probe

The Justice Mukul Mudgal commission has stated the assistance it would need to continue with its probe on corruption in the IPL. The panel sought help of the following individuals:
– ML Sharma, former CBI special director
– A senior officer (“preferably not below the rank of assistant commissioner of police”) each from the Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai police, and
– A former India cricketer “of repute and integrity”.
It also requested:
– Further assistance from police authorities, the Sports Integrity Unit of CBI’s anti-corruption branch and other departments or agencies of the central and state governments “as required.”
– Full co-operation of the BCCI during the investigation, including directions to abide by instructions, if any, issued by the panel. The commission also stated that all people working in and assisting the investigation, should “exercise their duties with utmost confidentiality” and act as officers of the court.

The request by Srinivasan’s counsel that he be reinstated as BCCI president was not agreed to by the court. The counsel had argued that the sealed envelope only contained an allegation against Srinivasan that he had failed to act on a complaint made against an individual. To which Justice A K Patnaik said, “The contents of the sealed cover is not what you think it is.” This has left Srinivasan’s BCCI position in limbo as long as there an investigation on. Srinivasan had formally been removed from all BCCI duties from April 16 onward, Justice Patnaik saying that Srinivasan, “could not come back as BCCI president as long as the probe is on.”The court did not however hear the matter of Srinivasan continuing in the ICC, where he hopes to take over as its first chairman in June this year. According to Nalini Chidambaram, counsel for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), the fact that the matter did not come in for a hearing was, “not really a setback. We only hope that the BCCI members will act fairly when a man is not fit to be BCCI president because under the ICC rules it is the BCCI who have to nominate their representative. So we only hope that good judgement will prevail on the BCCI members.”The case dates back to June 2013, when the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) secretary Aditya Verma raised charges of a conflict of interest in the BCCI’s original two-member inquiry panel for the IPL corruption issue. A Bombay High Court ruling later termed the probe panel “illegal”. The BCCI and the CAB filed petitions in the Supreme Court against this order, with the CAB contending that the Bombay High Court could have suggested a fresh mechanism to look into the corruption allegations. The Supreme Court then appointed a three-member committee, headed by former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal and comprising additional solicitor general L Nageswara Rao and Nilay Dutta to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations of corruption against Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, India Cements, and Rajasthan Royals team owner Jaipur IPL Cricket Private Ltd, as well as with the larger mandate of allegations around betting and spot-fixing in IPL matches and the involvement of players.

Jaffer blames T20 mindset for Mumbai collapse

Wasim Jaffer, the Mumbai captain, has said his team’s batsmen didn’t have it in them to play out time, after they were bowled out for 121 to lose to Karnataka

After Mumbai’s first ever loss to Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy in 22 games, an irked Wasim Jaffer said the batsmen in his side didn’t have it in their nature to spend a long time at the crease. Mumbai were set a target of 282 from 83 overs, but were bowled out for 121 in just over 50 overs.”In their [youngsters’] nature they are very aggressive,”Jaffer said. “The perception of batting whole day like [KL] Rahul. That’s what I asked a lot of my youngsters, to bat whole day and show me they can bat 90 overs and show me 120 runs or maybe a hundred. But it’s a bit difficult for them as it’s not in their nature nowadays.”When asked what he would attribute this to, pat came the reply.”T20,” he said. “You are playing so many T20s, one-day cricket, so it’s going to be difficult. Kaustubh [Pawar] was capable but he didn’t last long. He got a bad decision in the first innings, but he was the one who could do that and obviously I got out cheaply.”A lot of players just want to play IPL as obviously you get a lot of recognition and lot of money involved there. To be honest it’s a lot of hard work playing first-class. To bowl for four days or bat whole day and get a hundred. T20 or IPL is a lot easier. So obviously the minds have changed. The generations coming would probably think why put so much hard work when they can just play three hours of cricket and go home.”Jaffer conceded that his decision to field first after winning the toss had backfired. Mumbai restricted Karnataka to 251 and took an 18-run lead, but Karnataka rallied in their second innings to set a competitive target.”We actually misread the pitch,” he said. “We should have batted first and we needed to score more than 350, or probably more than 300 runs, so a lot of ifs and buts. But I thought restricting Karnataka to 250 we did a good job, but we didn’t bat well in our first innings.”The target might have seemed within Mumbai’s grasp, but with an asking rate of 3.40, Jaffer stated they had decided right at the start they were not going to go for the win.Sharath cherishes match-winning figures

Man of the Match HS Sharath was ecstatic after Karnataka’s win and his eight wickets in the match.
“I didn’t know this was our first outright win against Mumbai. I’m very happy,” he said. “We just wanted to keep it simple and bowl in the right areas. Vinay and Mithun gave us good breakthroughs. That was the turning point for us and after that it was easy for me to bowl and pick up wickets.
“When we bowled in the first innings there was assistance from the pitch. We utilised it by bowling in the right areas, but in the second innings the ball was keeping low so we bowled wicket-to-wicket. Also there were cracks in the pitch in the second innings.”
Sharath said he cherished his third five-for more than his first one on debut because “the performance has come against a top team like Mumbai.”

“We were never going for the chase,” he said. “We wanted to bat till lunch and tea time and then see how we end up. There are a lot of inexperienced players so they might have messed it up. So I didn’t take a chance saying ‘let’s go for the chase’. If we were in a good position we might have gone for it otherwise we wanted to save this game. I thought the wicket would be better for batting as the day progressed. I didn’t see it cracking like that and staying so low. I thought it would get better.”While this was Jaffer’s 219th first-class match, the second-most experienced batsman in Mumbai’s ranks was Hiken Shah, who was playing his 34th game. The inexperience, in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Abhishek Nayar, was on display when the batsmen struggled to get starts and the longest partnership of the innings, between Shah and Siddhesh Lad, produced 43 runs.”It’s a very young side,” Jaffer said. “I have played about 110-120 [Ranji] games and the next probably would have played 15-17 games, that’s the maximum. There are some talented players but they will take time.”After winning three of their first four matches, Mumbai conceded three points to Jharkhand and, against Odisha, failed to take eight wickets on the last day, after enforcing the follow-on. Both of those had been at home. Jaffer said this was because the Wankhede Stadium pitch had turned flatter of late.”I think the Wankhede wicket has become a lot flatter than what it was,” he said. “It’s a bit hard to get outright victory there because after the first day it becomes a bit difficult for the bowlers. It doesn’t get a lot of spin like it used to and the team is very inexperienced. We played [Pravin] Tambe, he played his first game, Vishal [Dabholkar] is playing his 10th-11th game. It becomes a lot more difficult.”Last couple of games we couldn’t win. We lost to Jharkhand in the first innings, couldn’t get the full points. We couldn’t hold on to the three points here, that’s what went wrong.”With their final game against Gujarat starting December 30, Mumbai and three other teams – Gujarat, Punjab and Delhi – will fight for two knockout berths. “Hopefully, if we stay positive, we can win that game,” Jaffer said. “Then there is a chance.”

A torcida do Vasco começou a ficar impaciente com a apatia do time.
