New South Wales excited by young talent

The absence of key players could herald a new era for New South Wales, with promising young talent banked upon to continue the success from last year

The absence of key players could herald a new era for New South Wales, who will bank upon young talent to continue the success from the 2007-08 season, when they won the Pura Cup. Simon Katich, the team captain, feels the line-up is settled even without him, Brad Haddin and Doug Bollinger, all of whom will be touring India with the national side in October-November.”We expect Mark Cameron and Nathan Bracken to open the attack and, with Doug Bollinger away, someone else will try to take that other bowling opportunity,” Katich told the . “Our attack will be fine, as will our batting.”Last year Phil Hughes did extremely well, Peter Forrest had a good season, and guys like Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith and Moises Henriques got opportunities. Greg Mail and Ed Cowan will also push for spots. There’s going to be good rivalry and batsmen who make runs early will be in the best position.”Katich said the winning experience in last year’s Pura Cup, now the Sheffield Shield, will help the up-and-coming players. “They’ve got some experience under their belts, have spent time in the squad, and I think it will be time for them to push on and show what they can do,” he said. “There’s no doubt they’ve got the ability, it’s just about having that belief that they can do it at the next level.”David Gilbert, the Cricket New South Wales chief executive, was thrilled with the advent of younger players, especially Hughes and Forrest, both of whom are in India with the Australia A squad. “It’s probably one of our most exciting eras of young guys coming through since the 1980s, when the Waugh brothers [Steve and Mark] and Mark Taylor emerged,” Gilbert said. “Phil Hughes is proof of that. At this time last year, he was still finishing school commitments – and here he is on an Australia A trip.”Hughes earned his place in the Australia A side after only nine first-class games. He got a rookie deal with New South Wales last year after he scored 387 runs at 96.75 for Australia Under-19s in five matches against Pakistan Under-19s and followed it up with a good showing in the Emerging Players Tournament. In seven first-class matches for New South Wales last season, Hughes scored 559 runs at 62.11 and, at 19, became the youngest centurion in a Sheffield Shield final.”The [Australia A] selection was also good news for Peter Forrest,” Gilbert said. “He did good things for about two years and fell away a bit late last season. But at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane he’s done very well lately. So I guess his selection was based on what he achieved over the winter up there. He’s a very determined bloke.”We’re probably not going to see much of Simon Katich and Doug Bollinger this year and that’s where it will be interesting to see how the likes of Hughes, Forrest, Steven Smith, Usman Khawaja, Moises Henriques and others go. With the 2009 Ashes tour on the horizon the performances of many of these players will be closely monitored by the national selectors.”

Update provided on Shaqiri’s LFC future

Xherdan Shaqiri’s Liverpool future could be decided this week, with reliable journalist Neil Jones providing a key update on his future.

The Lowdown: Shaqiri set to leave Liverpool

Shaqiri’s Reds career has been an up-and-down one, with the Swiss producing moments of quality (not least the two-goal salvo against Manchester United in 2018) but rarely becoming a key player at the club despite his weekly wage of £86,000.

The 29-year-old is expected to move on before the end of the summer transfer window, with Jurgen Klopp not seeing a future for him at Anfield.

The Latest: Jones provides latest

Goal journalist Jones has now given an update on Shaqiri’s future via Twitter, stating that key developments could be made in the coming days and naming four clubs who are interested in signing him. He outlined:

“Interest in Xherdan Shaqiri expected to ramp up this week. Sevilla, Villarreal, Lazio and Napoli among clubs to express interest. Liverpool ready to do business at the right price.”

The Verdict: Time to move on

Shaqiri is a capable footballer with bags of experience, but now seems like the right time for him to go and enjoy a fresh challenge. In Harvey Elliott, who dazzled on loan at Blackburn last season, Liverpool potentially have a tailor-made replacement ready to come in and fill the void left by the 96-cap Switzerland international.

Shaqiri’s constant inability to stay fit became increasingly problematic – the hope is that Elliott will be available more often – and with his 30th birthday approaching, his time at Liverpool has reached its natural conclusion.

Having started just seven league games over the past two seasons, the writing has frankly been on the wall for some time for the Swiss winger.

In other news, two clubs are reportedly keen on signing a Liverpool player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Liverpool: Fans react to Konate’s debut delight

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate made his debut for the Reds on Tuesday in a pre-season friendly against German side VFB Stuttgart in Austria.

Philipp Förster gave Stuttgart a shock lead on the day after just six minutes, as he finished off a well-worked move. Sadio Mane equalised for Jurgen Klopp’s side just 15 minutes later though, as the 30-minute game finished 1-1.

Konate played his part in the game, as he started in the heart of the Liverpool defence, alongside youngster Rhys Williams.

The 22-year-old signed for the club during the summer transfer window from German outfit RB Leipzig, reportedly seeing his £36,000 per-week wages doubled with the Reds, so he’ll be keen to make a positive impact with the Premier League side at the earliest of opportunities.

Konate took to Twitter following his debut, and was clearly delighted to have featured for his new team in pre-season.

Plenty of Liverpool supporters also took to social media to issue their verdicts on Konate’s recent display in their draw against VFB Stuttgart.

West Ham: Yaremchuk could be Haller v2

A new name has emerged in West Ham’s striker pursuit this week…

What’s the word?

According to the Express, the Irons are among several teams interested in a move for Gent star Roman Yaremchuk this summer transfer window.

It’s claimed that David Moyes is finalising his shortlist of potential forward targets and the Ukraine international is under consideration.

The Hammers have been monitoring him throughout the season and are said to have closely scouted the Belgian top-flight for the past two years. where Yaremchuk has caught the eye.

Sevilla, Bologna and Bayer Leverkusen are also reportedly keen.

Haller 2.0?

It’s no secret that the signing of a new forward will be amongst the Scot’s top priorities this window, after he was left with only one senior option following the departure of club-record flop Sebastian Haller in January.

However, Moyes must approach this with caution because he could well stumble across another similar situation.

Success in Belgium has never been a great barometer for potential signings in the Premier League. You only have to look at Aston Villa’s moves for Wesley Moraes and then Mbwana Samatta to see that.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-staff-gsb-moyes-updates-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

The latter is already gone from the club, having scored just two goals in 16 appearances.

Both were prolific prior to their arrivals in the Premier League and that has to be concerning, especially considering the fact that the Ukraine goal machine has found the net 23 times this campaign.

If the struggle in adapting to a league as brutal as the English top-flight isn’t enough of a concern, then the Hammers must remember that they have been here before themselves.

Haller scored 20 goals in all competitions during the 2018/19 season, before earning that club-record £45m move to the London Stadium, where he would go onto score 14 times in 53 appearances.

Once dubbed “fantastic” by his manager, Yaremchuk is a bit like the Ajax star, too. At 6 foot 3, he’s also a target man of sorts. And far from a similar option to Michail Antonio, Moyes’ only striker.

The Irons have been linked to plenty of other names in the past few weeks, including Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who has proven experience in this division. He’d surely be a far better choice than the Gent man.

Moyes surely risks repeating West ham’s Haller mistake by signing Yaremchuk.

AND in other news, West Ham dealt transfer blow amid ExWHUemployee update…

Liverpool linked to Cristian Romero

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (as reported by The Mirror), Jurgen Klopp’s charges are making progress in their pursuit of the 23-year-old as the German manager looks to strengthen his defensive options.

The report claims that the Serie A outfit value Romero at around £43m following an impressive 2020/21 campaign, but they must first turn his loan move from Juventus into a permanent one.

Klopp needs him

Liverpool’s current centre-back options struggled with serious injury issues last season, significantly hindering their progress as youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams were forced to fill in on many occasions.

Klopp has already moved to address that issue, bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for £34 million, although his suspect injury record means the former Borussia Dortmund boss may want to add further reinforcements – the Frenchman has suffered four significant injuries in the past two seasons alone, missing 45 games.

The Anfield outfit finished a whopping 17 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City in the recently concluded campaign, largely down to their leaky defence.

While the Citizens conceded just 32 goals in 38 games, Liverpool let in 42. Building a solid foundation is key to any success in football, and adding Romero would ensure Klopp can construct exactly that over the coming months.

The Argentina international played a pivotal part as Gian Piero Gasperini’s men finished third in the Italian top-flight, making 31 league appearances, scoring two goals and assisting a further three.

Despite his telling contribution in the attacking third, Romero was also crucial to Atalanta’s defensive solidity, making 2.2 clearances per league game, 3.1 interceptions and two tackles, placing him in the top two amongst his teammates for each metric.

His physical style, love for a tackle and ability in the air would make the South American an ideal centre-back in the Premier League, and the possibility of the 6 ft powerhouse lining up alongside Van Dijk is a daunting prospect for any top-flight striker.

The pair have the potential to form a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence, with Romero also excelling with the ball at his feet and building from the back – he averaged the sixth-most passes of any Atalanta player, and with the fourth-best accuracy of any player to have started more than one game.

With Liverpool aiming to regain their Premier League crown next season, Klopp needs an extra centre-back to avoid a repeat scenario that killed off their title tilt in 2020/21, and bringing Romero would be a significant coup.

Derby linked with Stephen O’Donnell move

Derby County are reportedly among a number of Championship clubs interested in signing Scotland international Stephen O’Donnell this summer.

The Lowdown: O’Donnell impresses for Scotland

The 29-year-old is currently playing at Euro 2020, impressing in the Tartan Army’s 0-0 draw with England on Friday night as he won two tackles and helped his team to a clean sheet, shacking Raheem Sterling throughout.

The right-back bounced back from a below-par showing against the Czech Republic in Scotland’s opener, showing quality and consistency out wide at Wembley four days later.

The Latest: Derby linked with move

O’Donnell’s form has seemingly caught the eye of a host of clubs, with the Daily Mail claiming that Derby are one of those interested in a move for the defender.

Birmingham City, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley are all mentioned in the report too as a potential battle to sign the Motherwell man begins to brew.

The Verdict: Shrewd summer addition

O’Donnell could be a solid acquisition for Derby, possessing a wealth of experience (377 club career appearances) and representing his country at a major tournament.

While he might not necessarily be the most flamboyant footballer, he is a safe pair of hands, averaging 1.3 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Scottish Premiership last season.

O’Donnell’s ability to play at both right-back and right wing-back could also appeal to Wayne Rooney as the Derby manager looks to build a side capable of pushing towards the play-off positions in 2021/22.

In other news, one Derby player is reportedly in talks with another club over a summer move. Find out who it is here.
