Tottenham Hotspur: Sunderland agree deal for Jack Clarke

According to a report by Football Insider, Sunderland have agreed a deal with Tottenham to sign youngster Jack Clarke on loan, with the medical booked for today.

The Lowdown: Clarke struggles for game time

Clarke arrived at Hotspur Way in the summer of 2019, signing from Leeds United in a deal worth £10 million, with further payments subject to clauses.

Since signing, the 21-year-old has been on loan back to Elland Road and to Championship sides QPR and Stoke City. However, he chose to stay at his parent club for the 2021/22 season, having changed his mind about another temporary switch last August.

Clarke has since struggled to make an impact at Tottenham, and as such, he has not featured in a single match-day squad in the Premier League this season.

His only senior involvement came in the embarrassing loss to Pacos de Ferreira in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds last year.

The Latest: Sunderland agree deal for Clarke

Football Insider have reported from a Stadium of Light source that Sunderland have agreed to take Clarke on loan until the end of the season, with the medical booked for Wednesday morning.

It was previously reported that the Black Cats were interested in the 21-year-old, and it has now been revealed that an agreement has been reached with the North-London side.

The Verdict: Needs to impress

Clarke signed a four-year contract in 2019, so he has just 18 months left on his current deal with the Lilywhites.

Following a number of loans which haven’t proved to be a huge success, it is imperative that the youngster is able to flourish for Sunderland if he is to sign a new contract and stay at Tottenham, or even if he is to secure a good role elsewhere once his current deal expires.

Either way, Clarke will be feeling the pressure to perform – Lee Johnson’s side are sitting second in League One with just two points separating the top four sides. If he can help fire the Wearside outfit to promotion, it could be the springboard he needs to kickstart his senior career.

Taylor, Daley and Mohammed ensure clean sweep

Stafanie Taylor and Anisa Mohammed frustrated Sri Lanka and ensured West Indies swept the three-match Twenty20 series

Cricinfo staff25-Apr-2010
Scorecard
Sri Lanka will be sick of Stafanie Taylor, Shanel Daley and Anisa Mohammed after their tour of the Caribbean is over. For the third consecutive game, the West Indies trio frustrated Sri Lanka and ensured West Indies swept the three-match Twenty20 series. Sri Lanka had done well to keep West Indies to 112, out of which Taylor made a match-winning 59, but their inability to cope with Mohammed’s teasing offspin saw them slump to a 28-run loss at St Mary’s Park.Taylor, who in the previous two games had hit half-centuries, was again to the fore in testing circumstances. Sripali Weerakkody, bowling right-arm medium with the new ball, struck in the first over and then again to snap a brisk 40-run stand between Taylor and Juliana Nero. When Deandra Dottin edged Weerakoddy behind for 6, West Indies were 55 for 3 and Taylor had to reassess the situation. Shashikala Siriwardene, bowling her tidy offspin, and the left-armer Suwini de Alwis struck as well to keep the pressure up on the hosts. Taylor’s 59 off 50 balls was the highest score after Nero’s 24 and no other batsman crossed 6. Taylor was last out off the penultimate ball of the West Indies innings. As it turned out, she had again done enough with the bat. Sri Lanka’s chase got off to a good start with Dedunu Silva and Chamari Atapattu adding 40 in 5.5 overs, but Silva’s run-out for 13 off the last ball of the sixth over changed the complexion. Daley, who had been impressive in the first game with 3 for 13 off her quota, induced false strokes in consecutive overs to have Atapattu (27) and Inoka Galagedara stumped. From here the chase completely fell apart at the seams and like West Indies middle and lower order has succumbed, so did Sri Lanka’s. Only one other batsman reached double-figures and Mohammed accounted for the last four wickets in another outstanding spell of 4 for 8 from 3.3 overs.

Sangakkara wants equal opportunity in Tests

Kumar Sangakkara has asked for teams to be given equal opportunity in Test cricket, saying the dwindling number of five-day matches Sri Lanka were playing was limiting their ambitions

Cricinfo staff22-May-2010Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan captain, has asked for teams to be given equal opportunity in Test cricket, saying the dwindling number of five-day matches Sri Lanka were playing was limiting their ambitions. Sangakkara welcomed the idea of a world Test championship and said teams should be given the chance of playing a minimum number of Tests in a year.”It’s great to have a Test championship but I believe that all sides should have an equal opportunity to play Test matches,” Sangakkara told in Florida, where Sri Lanka are playing two Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand. “This year we are lucky that India wants to come and play Test matches but the opportunity for Sri Lankan players to fulfil their Test ambitions are getting more and more limited.”Since their tour of Australia in 2007, Sri Lanka have not played a Test series outside the subcontinent. They haven’t been to South Africa for a Test tour since 2002 and the Tests in 2011 will be their first in England in five years.”Sides must be given the opportunity to play a minimum number of Test matches and the Future Tours Programme must be reorganised so some of the best sides tour more than just once in five years,” Sangakkara said. “There was once talk of playing a Test championship without Sri Lanka in the first year at a time when we were number two in the Test rankings. These are the inconsistencies they must address.”Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka batsman, echoed his captain’s views. “I think we need to think a bit more about Test cricket, you need to make sure all the teams are going to play eight to ten matches a year minimum, and then you can strike that balance,” he said. “I have only played four Test matches in my entire career in Australia; that’s in 12 years of playing.”

Phil Hay drops LUFC claim

After securing a top-half finish in the Premier League last season, Leeds United have had a rocky start to their latest campaign this time around with three wins, seven draws and seven defeats under their belt, the latest of which being a disheartening 7-0 thrashing against Manchester City.

Despite this, in his pre-match press conference ahead of Leeds’ next Premier League match against Arsenal at the weekend, Marcelo Bielsa said that his sole focus is continuing with his job until the end of the season, putting to bed any concerns some Leeds fans may have about the Argentine potentially leaving before then.

Leeds journalist Phil Hay also shared some interesting insight regarding Bielsa’s immediate future at Elland Road, assuring his Twitter followers that there is ‘zero’ chance that sacking Bielsa is ‘in any way a thing’ at Elland Road.

Since being appointed at Leeds back in 2018, the 66-year-old has gone on to take charge of 160 games with the Yorkshire club, winning 79, drawing 29 and losing 52, taking Leeds from the Championship to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

Given the major love and respect that Leeds fans have for Bielsa and what he’s done for the club since his arrival, they will be delighted that not only does Bielsa have no intention of leaving his position before the end of the season but also that the club apparently shares that stance, per Hay.

However, with the Whites currently sitting in 16th place in the league table with Arsenal and Liverpool for their next two fixtures, Bielsa will have to oversee one incredible turnaround in form in order to end 2021 on a high.

The boss claimed the performance at the Etihad Stadium was the worst they have produced in four years under his reign, and even if they don’t pick up points against the irrepressible Reds and in-form Gunners, they must ensure there are positives in the display to take forward into January.

Given the current injury issues that have plagued the club in recent weeks, if Leeds can have players such as Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford among others back fit again as soon as possible and stay fit for the rest of the campaign, this should put them in a good place to avoid the drop.

Source shares Handanovic to Spurs news

Taking to Twitter, journalist Rudy Galetti of Sportitalia TV has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Inter Milan shot stopper Samir Handanovic.

The Lowdown: Paratici eyeing new keepers?

Even though it seems as if Tottenham number one Hugo Lloris is likely to pen a one-year extension at the club, the future of number two Pierluigi Gollini is up in the air.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reports even claim the Lilywhites could decide to cut short his loan spell and send him back to Atalanta despite having the option to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of 2021/2022 (L’Eco di Bergamo via The Spurs Web).

This comes amid ‘concerns’ those within Tottenham have over Gollini’s fitness as they weigh up making his move a permanent one (The Athletic), but it appears Spurs may also have their eye on alternative options already.

The Latest: Galetti makes Handanovic claim…

Taking to Twitter, reporter Galetti has shared news on a brand new target for Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici as news emerges on Handanovic.

The 37-year-old’s contract at the San Siro expires this year, meaning he is now free to negotiate pre-contract summer moves with overseas clubs.

Tottenham have apparently taken an interest in doing this and Handanovic now ‘could arrive’ in England as a free agent later in 2022.

It is also believed that Conte has personally ‘asked for’ his former keeper as Spurs keep tabs.

The Verdict: Right call?

Arguably solid for a quick-fix, the 81-cap Slovenia international is a player Conte certainly knows well and played regularly during his time at Inter Milan.

Over the last two seasons, Handanovic has been a mainstay in the Nerazzurri starting line up but came under-fire for some of his unreliable performances near the end of 2021.

He has, however, stood out with brilliant performances as well since then and his experience working under Conte could be of real benefit to Tottenham.

A seasoned and experienced shot stopper with plenty of time at the top level, he has also been called a ‘monster’ by his goalkeeping teammate Michele Di Gregorio, currently on loan at Serie B side Monza.

On a free deal, Handanovic certainly shouldn’t be dismissed as an option should Gollini leave.

West Ham hold Arthur Cabral ‘meeting’

Taking to Twitter, Goal Brasil journalist Thiago Fernandes – collaborating with fellow reporter Marcelo Hazan – has lifted the lid on a West Ham ‘meeting’ to sign FC Basel striker Arthur Cabral.

The Lowdown: West Ham weigh up January striker move…

Nearly a year since David Moyes began his search for a backup centre-forward to Michail Antonio, coming after club-record signing Sebastian Haller left for Ajax, the Irons are still very much on the look out.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There have been links to many forwards over these last few months alone, with the Evening Standard recently reporting that the striker position is still top of Moyes’ to-do list ahead of January.

Amid the increased number of games which comes with fighting on more fronts, it is arguably even more imperative that West Ham strengthen in the winter market.

As such, news has now emerged from South America that the club are seemingly eyeing a new centre-forward target.

The Latest: West Ham hold Cabral ‘meeting’…

Taking to social media in sharing his piece with Hazan for Goal, Fernandes has lifted the lid on a ‘meeting’ from representatives of the Hammers to sign Basel striker Cabral.

According to his information, West Ham ‘authorised intermediaries’ to negotiate his signing in January. He explained:

“West Ham looks for Arthur Cabral’s exhaustion and enters into dispute with Barcelona. Club authorized intermediaries to negotiate the hiring of the Basel striker in the ball market. There was a meeting this Friday.”

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

The 23-year-old has been in red-hot form for his club this season, racking up an incredible 24 goals and eight assists over 25 games in all competitions for the Swiss giants (Transfermarkt).

These prolific performances even earned him his first call-up to the Brazil squad in October after he turned former Middlesbrough star Juninho’s head with his displays (TEAMtalk).

In a further boost for West Ham, it is believed that Basel have set as asking price of around €15m (£12.7m) for interested parties to sign him in the winter window, which seems a more than affordable fee.

Given his age, proficiency and current form, this looks like an absolute bargain, especially as the player himself is also reportedly willing to leave St Jakob-Park in January.

Taking this into account, West Ham and their new head of recruitment Rob Newman may have just approached an ideal new target as backup to Antonio.

$225m base price for two new IPL franchises

The IPL will include two more teams from the 2011 season and will auction the franchise rights at a base price of $225 million, the league’s commissioner Lalit Modi announced

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Dec-2009The IPL will include two more teams from the 2011 season and will auction the franchise rights at a base price of $225 million, the league’s commissioner Lalit Modi announced on Thursday. That figure – double of what the most expensive franchise was sold for in 2008 and more than four times the base price in that first auction – is, in an uncertain market, a sign of the league’s confidence in itself and the Twenty20 format. That valuation is all the more surprising given that the franchises will almost certainly be based in relatively small markets – the metros and bigger cities already have teams. The favourites to be host cities for the two teams are Ahmedabad and Lucknow. However, signs of the IPL’s growing net worth were evident in February when Rajasthan Royals, the then IPL champions, sold a 11.7% stake in their franchise for approximately US$15.4 million. That put the valuation of the franchise at around $140m, more than double the $67m paid for it a year previously. The league’s expansion will see a much longer fixture list – 94 games as opposed to 59 in the first two seasons if the format remains the same – and accommodating it in the 45-day window without compromising players’ fitness, and keeping the international calendar in mind, will be a challenge.Modi’s announcement followed a meeting of the IPL’s governing council at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai that was also attended by board president Shashank Manohar and secretary N Srinivasan. He announced details of next season’s league, which will begin on March 12 in Hyderabad – home to the current champions, the Deccan Chargers – with the final and the third place play-off on April 25 at the D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The semi-finals will be held in Bangalore.Another important decision taken today was to remove the two-player cap on centrally contracted Australian players in each IPL team. The cap had been in response to Cricket Australia’s concern of an exodus from its pool of contracted players when the league started.Modi also said he had received requests from 12 Pakistan players to be part of the auction for the third IPL on January 19. Each team has been allotted $750,000 to make new signings at that auction. The player auction for the fourth IPL will take place after the Champions League in the third or fourth quarter of 2010. The process for the players would be on the same lines as during the inaugural edition but said only “certain” players would be bid without going into much details. “The current franchises would be allowed to keep a certain number of players, the modalities are being worked out.”

Skipp ran the show against Everton

With Antonio Conte heading into his first Premier League game in charge of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, the Italian manager would have undoubtedly been hoping to get his reign at Spurs off to a positive start against Everton.

However, the fixture turned out to be a rather cagey affair, with Tottenham just edging the greater share of possession, Everton having more shots at goal, Spurs creating more big chances and the Toffees enjoying more attacking momentum than the visitors – although neither side managed to find the breakthrough, with the game ending 0-0.

Despite failing to take all three points from the fixture, there were nevertheless a couple of Tottenham players who will have done themselves no harm in strengthening their spot in Conte’s first-team plans going forwards – one of whom was 21-year-old central midfielder, Oliver Skipp.

93% passes completed

Having broken into the Tottenham first-team this season after a highly impressive loan spell at Norwich City last term, the Italian manager opted to keep the young midfielder in his starting XI for Spurs’ trip to Everton on Sunday, ahead of the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli and Harry Winks.

And, over his 90 minutes on the pitch at Goodison Park, the £13.5m-rated man did not disappoint, enjoying 58 touches of the ball, completing 43 of his 46 attempted passes – a success rate of 93% – and finding his man with two of his three attempted long balls, as well as making two key passes.

The £24k-per-week England U21 international also impressed in metrics more typical of his defensive midfield position, making three tackles, blocking one shot, making two interceptions and winning four of his seven duels.

These returns saw the 21-year-old who Daniel Farke dubbed a “perfect” player earn a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.2, ranking him as Spurs’ joint third-best performer on the day.

As such, while Emerson Royal rightly deserves praise for his own performance at right wing-back against the Toffees, it will perhaps be the performance of Skipp that most pleased the 52-year-old manager, as the youngster ran the show on Sunday.
