Leeds’ Jack Clarke needs to man up according to Noel Whelan

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Noel Whelan has laid down some home truths for Leeds man Jack Clarke. Speaking to Football Insider he suggested the youngster needs to man up and have expectations of himself.

What’s he said?

It may be the international break but Clarke is seemingly still one of the main focal points at Elland Road.

He’s already been berated by supporters this season but now he’s also taking criticism from pundits.

The 18-year-old signed for Tottenham in the summer but has since been sent back on loan to the Whites and struggled for game time.

He’s played just twice and was dragged off at half time against Stoke in the Carabao Cup. It’s been a difficult term for him and thus, Whelan reckons Clarke needs to change. He told Football Insider:

“It’s down to the player to catch the manager’s eye, it shouldn’t be the manager demanding from him, he’s got to have demands and expectations of himself and levels in training and how he goes about his job.”

“He looks a little rusty, a little bit feeling sorry for himself. He needs to man up a little bit and with expectations, you’ve got to deal with that pressure.”

Attitude problems?

It’s difficult to assess entirely where it went wrong for the talented teenager. The winger was taken ill at one point last term and has seemingly faced an uphill battle to get into Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

With the wide man now a Spurs player, it looks as though he’s got somewhat of an attitude problem and his inability to impact proceedings against Stoke summed that up.

He earned a match rating of 5 from Yorkshire Evening Post as he was brought off at the break.

But it was a moment for the U23 side that sums up why he needs to change the way he goes about things.

Being replaced on 85 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Bristol City, he trudged off the pitch and didn’t even shake his replacement’s hand, heading straight to the dugout instead.

It was a moment that rather summed up his torrid campaign and showed why he needs to man up.

If Clarke doesn’t become a more mature player, he may also find things a struggle when he first plays for Spurs.

For now, he’s merely wasting time by not trying to prove himself.

Arsenal fans slam Ainsley-Maitland Niles’ performance against Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

Ainsley Maitland-Niles will be counting his lucky stars following this weekend’s match against Aston Villa.

In the end, Arsenal recorded a 3-2 victory thanks to late goals from Calum Chambers and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, it could have been so much different.

In the 41st minute, the 22-year-old left-back was sent off for two bookable offences. While there seems to be some disagreement in regards to the second yellow card – Unai Emery claimed that “he didn’t touch the player” – he still gave the referee a decision to make.

Nevertheless, it was not a great performance from the England Under-21 international.

Naturally a midfielder, where he has played the majority of his games, he has been deputising at right-back since Hector Bellerin ruptured his cruciate ligament in January of this year. And in this game, he looked out of his depth.

The Emirates Stadium faithful were far from sympathetic, and they slammed his display.

Aston Villa fans react to CEO Christian Purslow’s latest comments

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa’s chief executive Christian Purslow gave a sensational interview on Monday evening to Sky Sports News as he looked to defend the club’s summer of high-spending.

Villa boss Dean Smith brought in 12 new signings for a total fee of around £144.5m after winning promotion to the big time via the Championship playoffs in May.

Of all the Premier League sides, only Manchester United spent more this summer though Villa had a higher net spend, and their attempts had previously been likened to Fulham who were immediately relegated last season following a net spend of £100m.

Four new arrivals started the game against Tottenham on Saturday evening as Villa succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in North London.

Purslow appeared to impressively swat away every single question fired at him by the Sky Sports presenter which has caused a reaction from a number of fans at Villa Park.

He said: “It is a lot of money, and I’m incredibly grateful to our owners, but a couple of important points. Firstly, at the end of last season we had 12 players leave Villa, so we would have been starting with 10 players had we not bought.

“With or without promotion, Dean Smith and Jesus Garcia Pitarch came to Aston Villa with the certain knowledge we would be rebuilding our club this summer.”

One supporter labelled him a ‘class act’ whilst others called him ‘very reassuring and genuinely honest.’

A further fan added that Purslow is possibly the best signing the club have made which was backed up by another who believes the club is in the best hands it has ever been in and that they are building something special.

Celtic fans react to Neil Lennon’s comments on transfer plans

[ad_pod ]

Neil Lennon has spoken of his desire to reinvest the Kieran Tierney money in his playing side but the fans aren’t excited by his plans.

Celtic sold Tierney to Arsenal in the dying embers of the English transfer window for a fee of £25m, and it appears Lennon already has his masterplan for how to spend his new transfer kitty.

Speaking ahead of the Motherwell game, the Bhoys boss admitted he’d like as many as five new faces in, with a shortlist of three new defenders, two wingers and a striker.

It’s been a busy summer at Parkhead, though some fans are a little frustrated that more hasn’t been done, and this shopping list has got the fans questioning Lennon’s competency.

With many wingers already at the club, the prospect of two more bolstering the ranks does seem a little odd.

Others are frustrated that he’s not backing up his words, and said that they’d prefer to see the signings, rather than be told that they could happen.

Here’s how the disgruntled fans reacted to Lennon’s comments on Twitter…

West Ham target Aaron Long hopeful of deal being done

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United target Aaron Long is hopeful of securing a move to the club before Thursday’s transfer deadline, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The report claims that the Hammers are keen to sign the New York Red Bulls defender, who has a £4m release clause in his contract.

However, they have yet to obtain a work permit ahead of the transfer, the report claims, but Long has expressed his desire to move to England and hopes the matter can be resolved by Thursday’s deadline.

He said: “As our biggest ally, it seems strange that a football player from the US can’t automatically get a work visa to play in England.

“Every kid in the USA dreams of playing in the English Premier League. Not many players get the chance, so of course, I would like to play there someday.”

[ad_pod ]

A considered punt

This is a bit of a risky move from the Hammers but there needs to be an investment in the backline.

Few fans will be aware of who Long is, such is the stature of MLS football, but he was named the MLS Defender of the Year for 2018 and is also a full United States international.

He has won 11 caps for his country, scoring two goals, and is a cheap option in an inflated transfer market.

Indeed, the Hammers have struggled to keep the goals out in pre-season, conceding 12 in six games against Altach, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Fulham, Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao.

With a clash with Pep Guardiola’s champions set to kick off their 2019/20 season, Manuel Pellegrini’s defence needs all the help it can get.

Rangers fans love Ryan Jack’s views on squad improvement

[ad_pod ]

Ryan Jack has hailed the strengthening of Rangers’ first-team squad ahead of next season, speaking to the club’s official website.

Joe Aribo became the club’s seventh signing of the summer so far on Thursday, adding even more competition to a packed midfield area at Ibrox.

Jack then may have reason to be concerned about his future in Steven Gerrard’s starting eleven, but he is in fact delighted by the way the squad has been strengthened.

Watch the best fails from the world of indoor football in the video below…

As quoted by the official Rangers website, he said:

“I am optimistic ahead of the new season, we have a great squad of boys and we have kept the core of the team from last season so far, hopefully that continues.

“I think we have added real quality and there could be a couple more to come.

“So I think, no disrespect to last season, but I think the squad we are building is getting stronger and stronger, hopefully come the start of this season that shows.”

The Gers missed out on trophies again last season but after a year of progress under Gerrard, there is clearly optimism within the Ibrox camp that they can launch a sustained assault on treble champions Celtic next season.

With the club’s transfer business not likely to be over quite yet, there could be more new faces added to the squad too.

Rangers fans have reacted well to Jack’s comments, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on Friday…

Southampton fans react to board reshuffle

[ad_pod ]

Some Southampton fans on Twitter have reacted to the news that there has been a board reshuffle at the club.

Jisheng Gao, who is the majority shareholder of the club, has taken the position of chairman of the club and of the St Mary’s Football Group.

This comes following Ralph Krueger stepping down from the position after six years in the role.

The 59-year-old was originally employed by former owner Katharina Liebherr, who has re-joined the St Mary’s Football Group, but it is thought his influence on key decisions was limited when Gao took over.

Krueger guided the club through to the Premier League despite troubles back in 2014 when the former executive chairman Nicola Cortese and ex-boss Mauricio Pochettino both left.

Southampton’s new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below…

Vice chairman Martin Semmens is expected to conduct the day-to-day running of the club following the Canadian’s departure.

It was Semmens and Ross Wilson, who is the director of football at St Mary’s, who made the decision to replace Mark Hughes with Ralph Hasenhuttl last season.

Here is just a selection of the reaction from Saints supporters…

Shelvey exit would sting, but losing Longstaff is something Newcastle cannot afford to do

Summer is now upon us, the silly season is in its early days but the transfer rumour mill is already spinning. In the Northeast, this is no different, and the midfield picture at Newcastle could be set for vast change. Don’t fret too much Newcastle fans, as Rafa Benitez, whilst still at the club, has you in safe hands, even if there are rumours of Sean Longstaff’s exit.

There have been plenty of talks that Jonjo Shelvey won’t be sticking around for long, but losing the former Liverpool man would be nothing in comparison to having Sean Longstaff poached by Manchester United. The young North Shields-born midfielder was the heartbeat of the St James Park side up until his season-ending knee injury, and losing him would be the worst outcome of the summer.

Rafa Benitez obviously rates Longstaff very highly. The Newcastle academy man was given a contract extension at St James Park back in December to reward the 21-year-old for breaking into the first-team picture, and there are talks, which are mentioned in the Sky Sports News story reporting of Manchester United’s interests, that claim he’ll be set for a new contract this summer to give him a wage increase.

It will come as no shock to anyone, though, that Manchester United can afford to pay a lot more money than Newcastle United can. Rafa Benitez will be a major reason for Longstaff to sign a new deal and stay in the Northeast, but should Mike Ashley fail to get a new deal on the table for his gaffer, he could be set to lose out twice, as Longstaff could easily have his turned by United should Benitez depart.

If the young midfielder plays his cards right, he has the talents to be the man to lead the Geordies into a golden era, but should Mike Ashley sniff out a hefty profit on the academy man that has come through for nothing then it could be a very different story. All that the Magpies know is that £2.25 million man, as valued by Transfermarkt, is much better off at St James Park than anywhere else for now.

Spurs fans concerned about Danny Rose future

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left concerned by the future of left-back Danny Rose, who has confirmed that his final game for the club could come in the Champions League final, per The Guardian.

The full-back faces an uncertain summer, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino set to revamp his squad in the summer transfer window.

The former Leeds United star says that he has continually seen his own name linked with an exit and that he is desperate to go out with a bang if he is to depart.

He said: “I keep seeing my name that I’m being sold, so if that’s the case and it’s going to be my last game for Tottenham against Liverpool, I’m hoping to go out with a bang and lift a trophy.

“It’s a Champions League final so individual situations have to take a back seat and you have to put the club first. We are going to do that. We do realise we have a chance to make history.”

Spurs face Liverpool in the final in Madrid on June 1, having overcome Ajax in the most dramatic of circumstances on Wednesday evening. Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick, with his third goal coming in the final minute of injury-time.

The Reds, meanwhile, beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate and Spurs fans are clearly concerned about the prospect of the England international leaving this summer.
