West Ham now ‘seriously’ considering Ikone

According to a report by Milan Live, West Ham United have now got Lille forward Jonathan Ikone in their sights as they eye more attacking additions for manager David Moyes.

The Lowdown: West Ham in forward hunt…

Over the summer, Moyes made no secret of his desire to add more forward additions to his ranks and bolster West Ham’s chances for 2021/2022.

As he candidly admitted, the Scotsman was ‘desperate’ to sign a striker in particular and it isn’t difficult to see why when taking into account star man Michail Antonio’s concerning injury history.

The Jamaica international has started this season in sublime form; bagging six goals and three assists in just nine Premier League starts whilst also winning the English top flight’s Player of the Month award for August.

Moyes has had to manage him carefully, though, with the Hammers boss electing not to use the 31-year-old at all in the Carabao Cup for example.

He has even sent club doctors abroad to monitor Antonio when the player goes touring on international duty.

An injury to Antonio, which is always a lingering possibility, would spell disaster for West Ham and Moyes – leaving little wonder why they are currently weighing moves for new attacking additions like Andrea Belotti and Jesse Lingard.

The Latest: West Ham set sights on Ikone…

As per Milan Live, West Ham have now set their sights on another forward in Lille star Ikone who has featured in the Champions League this season.

A key player for the Ligue 1 title-winners over 2020/2021, he has been attracting attention from Serie A giants AC Milan, but as they apparently pull out of the race, the Hammers and Everton swoop in.

West Ham, alongside the Toffees, are now in contention to sign the 23-year-old and are ‘seriously considering buying the player’ for Moyes.

The Verdict: Underwhelming?

Lille apparently value their man at around €40 million (£34.2m) according to an exclusive Anfield Central, and for that price, we believe Ikone should be strongly avoided.

The summer signing of Nikola Vlasic and links to Lingard, who could leave Manchester United in January for half of Ikone’s reported price (The Sun), arguably render the Frenchman’s addition unnecessary.

Going by his numbers, he doesn’t exactly stand out as a must-have target for Moyes either.

According to WhoScored, Ikone’s averages of 1.3 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.1 completed dribbles per 90 don’t measure up to that of key West Ham first teamers.

The likes of Said Benrahma, Jarrod Bowen and Antonio have all racked up superior numbers to Ikone in terms of these attacking aspects, leaving one to wonder what he could add under Moyes.

A ‘very sought-after’ player before signing for Lille, we believe he shouldn’t be anywhere near the top of Rob Newman’s transfer wish list for January.

Chandimal and Rajapaksha shine in drawn match

Scorecard
Dinesh Chandimal and Banuka Rajapaksha scored brilliant hundreds but Sri Lanka had to be content with a draw in their opening game on the the tour of Bangladesh. Resuming on 110 for 2, both batsmen continued in strong fashion, with Rajapksha playing the aggressor. Both batsmen, however, were retired out, but not before Rajapaksha had smashed 16 boundaries and four sixes during his 130-ball innings with Chandimal hitting 16 fours during his 150-ball stay. Kushal Janith Perera’s 50 off 85 balls, comprising six boundaries, made it a day to forget for the Bangladesh U-19 bowlers as the visitors finished with a lead of 172.It was a much better showing from Bangladesh U-19 second time around as Mohammad Rubel tore into the Sri Lankan U-19 attack. He remained unbeaten on 73 off 71 balls, stroking 10 fours and two sixes en route. The two teams will face off next in the first Youth Test beginning Wednesday in Fatullah.

Farmer's son hits the big time

Phillip Hughes and Simon Katich have batted together for New South Wales and soon they will be opening for Australia © Getty Images

The whispers began three years ago. A banana farmer’s son had arrived in the big smoke and was punishing bowling attacks across Sydney grade cricket. “I’ll tell you this,” said his coach, Neil d’Costa, who had just chaperoned Michael Clarke to cricket’s grandest stage. “This kid will go all the way.”The prophecy unfolded rapidly. Runs for Western Suburbs. Runs for the New South Wales and Australia Under-19s. Runs for New South Wales and Australia A. And all this by the age of 20. Hughes was not so much a batsman as a cricketing tsunami, swamping competitions with torrents of runs and earning the reputation as Australia’s next big thing.Hughes is an intriguing subject on both sides of the boundary rope. Away from the game, he is a quietly-spoken country kid who, paradoxically, has developed a taste for high fashion, suave hairstyles and diamond earrings. On the pitch, he is a positive-scoring, free-flowing batsman, albeit with a technique that is not to everyone’s taste. But it is runs that define him as a cricketer, and runs that caught the eye of Andrew Hilditch’s selection panel. With 1570 to his name in 17 first-class games at an average of 60.38, Hughes has given Australia every reason to believe his is not a premature selection.”Watching [South Africa] on TV in Australia, they all seemed pretty good,” Hughes said. “I’d love to have a crack at all of them.”Hughes’ elevation to the Test squad was not entirely surprising – his 117 in last season’s Sheffield Shield final prompted a wave of media calls for his promotion – but it certainly sparked excitement across the Australian cricketing landscape. Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, was equally impressed with Hughes’ 151 and 82 not out in Newcastle over the past week, when he knew the spotlight was on him.”It’s probably one of the most exciting things I’ve had to do since I’ve been a selector, picking a 20-year-old player who’s scoring that volume of runs under pressure,” Hilditch said. “We probably haven’t done that since Ricky Ponting, so it’s pretty exciting.”He’s got a fairly simple technique and certain areas where he scores, he’s basically a very controlled sort of player. You probably don’t want to draw comparisons but maybe similar to Justin Langer when he started his career. He just seems to have a really good head about his shoulders.”Both Ponting and Langer spoke at length with Hughes during this week’s Allan Border medal presentation. Hughes was awarded the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year on the same evening Ponting was named joint winner of the Border medal, and the Australian captain was glowing in his praise for the man tasked with replacing Matthew Hayden at the top of the order.”It’s going to be a huge step up for him,” Ponting said. “It’s going to be a demanding tour on all the players, even us more experienced guys will find it difficult at times over there I’m sure.”Everything that he’s shown or indicated with his first-class cricket over the last couple of years would suggest that under pressure and in big moments he’s tended to stand up and do the job for New South Wales. That’s a great thing for him to have behind him already.”Hughes scored a breezy 64 in a tour match against New Zealand earlier in the summer, and on Thursday declared himself again ready to duel an international attack. “It’s all going very smoothly at the moment and I’m loving it,” he said. “I’ve batted a lot with Simon [Katich] for New South Wales now and he’s been great. It’s definitely great to bat with him and if [the opportunity] did come up [to open with him for Australia], it would be great.”

Run-hungry Punjab take control

ScorecardPunjab took control of their match with a commanding display on the second day. Two more batsmen scored centuries, to add to Adnan Raza’s open-day ton, as they piled up 526 before two early wickets increased the pressure on Baluchistan.Azhar Ali, who slept nervously on 99, moved to his century early in the morning session but couldn’t build much further as he fell for 104. But Kamran Hussain’s breakthrough was a false dawn for Baluchistan as Mohammad Ayub and Khurram Shehzad increased the pain with a stand of 163.Ayub moved along at a brisk pace, striking 17 fours and a six, and although Baluchistan made some inroads into the lower order the damage was already done. Shehzad was closing in on becoming the fourth century-maker of the innings, but Mohammad Hafeez declared so his attack could have a dart at the visitors’ top order. For an hour the openers progressed comfortably, however the introduction of spin changed the picture. Hafeez and Abdur Rehman both struck before the close as Baluchistan ended with a huge task ahead of them.
ScorecardNorth West extended their advantage to an imposing 188 on another shortened day at Peshawar. The main contributions came from Rafatullah Mohmand and Shoaib Khan jr as the home side set themselves up for a dart at Sind’s second innings on the third day.Mohmand and Khan carried their fourth-wicket stand to 113 before Sohail Khan made the breakthrough by removing Shoaib for 56. However, Aftab Alam offered further solid support to Rafatullah in a partnership worth 66.Azim Hussain’s left-arm spin made two breakthroughs, including shifting Mohmand seven short of his century, although Zulfiqar Jan added to Sind’s problems before the early close.

Man Utd won’t let Anthony Martial leave

Manchester United have no intention of selling forward Anthony Martial during this summer’s transfer window, according to reports.

What’s the story?

The 25-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Italian champions Inter in recent days as they search for Chelsea-bound Romelu Lukaku’s successor.

However, according to Sky Sports, Martial is believed to be part of United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for the upcoming campaign, ruling out an Old Trafford exit.

Fans will be absolutely buzzing

Martial has often been a frustrating figure for the Red Devils since his arrival from Monaco six years ago, with world-class performances often coming between lengthy barren spells in front of goal.

He appeared to add a much-needed consistency to his game throughout the 2019/20 campaign, though, bagging 23 goals and laying on a further 12 assists in 48 appearances for United.

Staying true to his infuriating nature, Martial was unable to build upon that fabulous season last term. A serious knee injury ended his campaign early, limiting him to just 16 goal contributions in 36 outings.

In his place, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood thrived for Solsjaer’s charges, and the arrival of former Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho has threatened to push the Frenchman further down the pecking order.

Nevertheless, with Marcus Rashford facing up to 12 weeks out following shoulder surgery and Jesse Lingard also facing a spell on the sidelines after testing positive for Covid-19, Solskjaer is not expected to allow Martial to leave this summer.

This latest revelation is likely to leave the club’s supporters absolutely buzzing. Although he can be a constant source of frustration, Martial is still only 25 and has a very respectable record for the club considering his age.

In all competitions, the versatile forward has found the back of the net on 78 occasions in 258 games for the 20-time English champions, providing 50 assists along the way.

That’s an impressive return for someone yet to hit their peak years, and Martial could benefit from the improved support system Sancho’s arrival will bring.

Therefore, a large section of United’s fanbase will be delighted to see him pull on a red shirt next season; they’ll just be hoping it’s the Martial of 2019/20 rather than 2020/21 that turns up.

Pundit says Leeds unlikely to sign Lewis O’Brien - Exclusive

David Norris has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern he thinks Leeds’ chances of signing Lewis O’Brien are slim.

Marcelo Bielsa has been quiet up to now in the transfer window, making just two significant additions in Jack Harrison, following three loan spells, and left-back Junior Firpo from Barcelona.

Exciting youngster Lewis Bate also joined from Chelsea, and the Leeds boss has been trying his luck with another young player in O’Brien, who’s been chased by several Premier League clubs after his impressive form for Huddersfield in the Championship.

Despite the speculation surrounding his future, O’Brien started Huddersfield’s win over Sheffield United on Saturday, and scored three times and assisted as many more in 42 Championship appearances last season.

But whilst the Telegraph believe that Leeds are closing in on a £7m deal for the 22-year-old, Norris believes that the deal has gone on too long for the two Yorkshire rivals to reach an agreement.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“I think once it goes too far, there’s obviously an issue, so I can’t see that one happening now. I can’t see them paying £8m-£10m.

“Some teams attract players for a long period of time and eventually get a deal done, but this one seems like it’s not going to happen, it’s gone on too long.”
