Mumbai hold advantage despite RoI fightback

Rest of India regained some lost ground on day four of the Irani Cup by bowling out Mumbai for 182, before compiling a steady 100 for 1, in pursuit of the steep target of 480. With 380 more runs to win, though, they still have a mountain to climb on the last day.Mumbai began the day on 2 for 1, with a lead of 299, and a solid batting performance would have put the Irani Cup out of their opponents’ reach. Instead, Rest of India had a better day, led by four wickets from Jayant Yadav and three from Jaydev Unadkat.Unadkat got the ball rolling, dismissing Shreyas Iyer for a duck off his fourth ball, before having Jay Bista caught behind just as he was starting to look threatening once again. Soon after, Krishna Das removed captain Aditya Tare for 6 to reduce Mumbai to 62 for 4.The fifth-wicket stand of 54 between Suryakumar Yadav (49) and Siddhesh Lad (60) was Mumbai’s only partnership of note as it took them past 100. It was broken by Jayant, who went on to claim two more wickets in the day.Jayant was well supported by Unadkat’s 3 for 16 off 11 overs, and Stuart Binny chipped in to take the last two wickets in quick succession, to bowl Mumbai out in 51.2 overs.Rest of India made a solid start to their chase, with Faiz Fazal and Srikar Bharat sharing a slow but steady 66-run partnership, before Iqbal Abdulla had Bharat bowled. Sudip Chatterjee then joined Fazal to see Rest of India through to stumps without any further loss. While Mumbai still held a massive advantage, Rest of India’s efforts ensured that the match still had some life left in it as it enters its final day.

Moeen joins England for second Test

England have added offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali to their squad ahead of the second Test in Grenada, which starts on April 21.

George Dobell at North Sound15-Apr-2015England have added offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali to their squad ahead of the second Test in Grenada, which starts on April 21.Moeen was not named in the original squad after he sustained a side strain during the World Cup, but he played in Worcestershire’s first Championship match of the season and reported no reaction after bowling. He was then assessed by the ECB medical team and cleared to meet up with the rest of the squad in Grenada ahead of the second Test.Having bowled only 11 overs against Yorkshire, England are keen to ensure Moeen is fit to bowl the heavy allocation of overs that could be required of him in a Test. They will therefore assess him further before making a decision whether to send anyone else in the party home. But it remains likely that Adil Rashid will return to England before the end of the tour. While the England management retain high hopes that Rashid, the 27-year-old legspinner, could go on to play an important job for the team in the future, he produced a modest performance in the warm-up game in St Kitts and missed out on the spinner’s spot in the first Test team to James Tredwell. With no games between Tests, there is little further opportunity for him to impress.Rashid is one of six Yorkshire players in the squad and one of four not picked for the XI in this game. While that situation has irked some at Yorkshire – the club president, Dickie Bird, chided the England management over the situation – Peter Moores and co. feel they need the reserves in case any of the players struggle to get through three Tests in such a short period of time. There are just three days between the first two Tests. While those players not required in the final Test, in Barbados, could be released once the game starts – with the exception of a substitute fielder or two – Yorkshire do not have a Championship match that week. But it could be that any players returning early to England will be considered for the ODI in Ireland on May 8. None of the players involved in the Barbados Test will be available for that game – they are only scheduled to return to the UK at 6am on May 7 – so England are expected to field a new-look side, almost certainly captained by James Taylor and likely to include Kent’s Sam Billings.Moeen established himself as England’s first-choice spinner during the Test series against India when he claimed 19 wickets; only one behind Ray Illingworth’s record for an England spinner in a home series against India. Moeen also made a Test century against Sri Lanka and will strengthen England’s batting. But he may yet find it tricky to displace Tredwell, who bowled beautifully in the first innings in Antigua and finished with Test-best figures of 4 for 47.

IPL governing council meet on February 3

The IPL governing council will meet in Mumbai on February 3 to finalise the auction date, ahead of the 2015 edition of the league. The meeting, which will be held after the marketing committee meet at the BCCI headquarters, will be the first official BCCI sub-committee conclave after the Supreme Court’s order pulling up the BCCI on various fronts. It is understood that the auction will have to postponed to the second half of February. Till last week, the franchises were informally told that the auction will be held between February 6 and 9, in Bangalore. However, with the court order set to have severe ramifications on the IPL and the BCCI, the auction cannot be held as per the initial plan.It is highly possible now that the auction will be held during the World Cup, something that the IPL authorities were trying their best to avoid.Meanwhile, a day after N Srinivasan – whose tenure as BCCI president seems to be all but over with the court ruling – returned to Chennai after a pilgrimage, he met with the BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel in Chennai. A Patel aide tried to play down the visit, which was always planned ahead of Patel’s departure to Dubai for Sunday’s ICC chief executives’ meeting. The two, it is understood, discussed the ramifications of the court order with the BCCI and Srinivasan’s legal team. It is also believed that they had a teleconference with select Srinivasan loyalists, to discuss the way forward.

Rajasthan players set for Ranji return

A ruling of the Rajasthan High Court has opened the doors for the state’s cricketers to play in the BCCI’s domestic competitions this year

Junior selection committee: Kuldip Mathur, Pramod Yadav, Sukhvinder Singh. Expert: Connor Williams

Women’s selection committee: Megha Gaur, Shabhana Khan, Pratima Bharti. Expert: Rita Dey

A ruling of the Rajasthan High Court has opened the doors for the state’s cricketers to play in the BCCI’s domestic competitions this year. The court passed an interim order appointing selection committees that will pick teams to represent the state in various BCCI domestic tournaments in the 2014-15 season. The teams will play represent Rajasthan, but not under the usual banner of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA).The order was passed by Justice MN Bhandari, who was hearing a writ petition filed originally on September 16 on behalf Nikhil Doru and others, and signed by 75 Rajasthan players.”This order has been passed with the consent to make temporary arrangement to keep representation of the state of Rajasthan in various tournaments to be organised by the BCCI,” the court stated in its five-page order. The arrangement will come to an end at the completion of the 2014-15 season or when the dispute between the BCCI and the RCA is settled, whichever comes first. The BCCI had suspended the RCA in May after the latter elected Lalit Modi, an expelled administrator, as its president. The BCCI then omitted RCA from the domestic programme for the forthcoming season, which starts from next week. That had resulted in much angst among the players, and eventually the filing of the writ petition. The court had subsequently issued notices to the BCCI and the RCA, seeking responses from both on the writ petition, which had argued that the players were suffering only for one reason: “the grudge between the BCCI and RCA.”On Tuesday Bhandari asked both BCCI and RCA counsels to put forth a joint proposal to facilitate Rajasthan teams to participate in various domestic tournaments. Both parties were asked to nominate a set of names each, who would effectively act as selectors. Today the court finalised the three groups – one for the men’s team, one for the juniors and another for women’s cricket – the senior selection panel is comprised of five members while the other two have a set of three selectors. Each panel has a BCCI-nominated selector, who will “associate” with the other team members in picking teams.According to the court order the RCA had “proposed” five names which the “BCCI had no objection” with. But Bhandari decided to replace Ratan Singh with Sanjay Vyas due to the latter’s vast experience. “For senior selection committee, name of five members have been proposed by the RCA, to which, the BCCI has no objection but after considering those names, I find requirement of one substitution, which would be of Mr Ratan Singh with that of Mr Sanjay Vyas, who remained captain of Ranji team for quite long time,” the court order said. The court also pruned the original list of five and six selectors nominated by the RCA for the junior and women’s panels to three. The court pointed out that the BCCI would compensate the selectors during their tenure. The court also asked Taposh Chatterjee, who is currently a member of BCCI’s ground and pitches committee, to coordinate and oversee the appointment/requirements of the teams’ support staff, and asked the BCCI to approve the same. It was also made clear that the support staff would work “under the directions of the court” and their payments would be stood by the BCCI. Chatterjee is also the head groundsman at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Rajasthan’s home ground. For the venue of Rajasthan’s home matches, the court revealed that RCA had “offered” to provide Sawai Mansingh Stadium “for tournaments as and when required by selectors or BCCI for organising tournaments”. The court also clarified that the BCCI would take care of paying the charges for the stadium and conducting the matches. The writ petition was originally filed by a Jaipur-based advocate Sachin Mehta and argued by senior counsel Sudhir Gupta, on behalf of Doru, a former Rajasthan wicketkeeper, who last played for the state in 2009. Even if Mehta claimed that he had independently approached the court on behalf of the players, though, indirectly he was representing the RCA – it is understood that the RCA officials told the players they would be appealing to the court on behalf of the players. For its part, the BCCI had originally appointed an ad-hoc subcommittee to oversee the disputed states of Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttarakhand. But the subcommittee’s attempts at working a solution out with the RCA and the Rajasthan government – the RCA is governed by the Rajasthan Sports Act – failed, and so the deadlock continued. Now, the BCCI has readily accepted the court order, secretary Sanjay Patel said. “The BCCI has all along maintained that we do not want the players to suffer. We are delighted that that the players’ interests have been taken care of,” he told ESPNcricinfo.Despite its “acceptance”, the BCCI wanted to make sure it did not cede ground to the RCA in any way and hence sent one of its senior-most counsel, PR Raman, to argue the case on Tuesday. Following the court’s ruling, the BCCI also confirmed in a statement that it did not in any way change the status of the RCA. “The suspension of the membership of the RCA continues and would not stand in the way of the players’ participation in BCCI tournaments,” the release said.Mehmod Abdi, the deputy president at RCA, it was “win, win situation for all, particularly the RCA and the Rajasthan cricketers”. Abdi, a legal counsel himself, said the court intervention was “humane and compassionate”, one which “protected” the interest of the players.”In fact, cricketers were being unnecessarily punished. Under the bylaws, at best the member state can be suspended, not the players,” Abdi said in a statement. “Notwithstanding the disputes between RCA and BCCI, which are being addressed at different forums, this could be the best solution that could happen where under order of the court both BCCI and RCA have come under one roof to find a way out of the impasse other than the stated position of BCCI.”

Malan century worth the wait

Middlesex capitalised on a decent first day with a first-innings score of 488, which included a first Championship century in nearly two years for Dawid Malan

ScorecardDawid Malan made his first Championship hundred since the 2012 season•Getty ImagesMiddlesex capitalised on a decent first day with a first-innings score of 488, which included a first Championship century in nearly two years for Dawid Malan. Northamptonshire did well to curb the scoring early on but, after getting the monkey off his back, Malan was able to take the hosts to an imposing total. His relief at the close, showered and well groomed, was evident: “It’s definitely been a long time coming.”Armed with the new ball straight away, Northants had a breakthrough within the first over as Azharullah made use of the early morning conditions to trap Neil Dexter lbw. Joe Denly was the next to follow after a breezy 17 and, for a moment, it seemed Northants might skittle out Middlesex before lunch. However, a stand of 128 between Malan and John Simpson took Middlesex past 400 and ensured they made the most of their handy position overnight. Simpson’s knock of 67 was key, not least in allowing Malan the opportunity to end his century drought, before going on to his highest Championship score.Upon reaching 90, his scoring options were limited; the bowlers offering him little width, as Stephen Peters backed them with a tight field. With one ball of the morning session remaining, Malan found himself on 96 and on strike to Steven Crook.Sizing up a vacant leg-side boundary, he put everything into a full ball on leg stump, connecting well, only for the helmet of the bat-pad fielder to take a blow and save four runs. It was by no means a chance but Malan, walking back to the pavilion for lunch with a little look to the heavens, knew it was one of a few bits of luck that had fallen his way in the morning. Soon after the interval, 26 balls after entering the nineties, he had his hundred.”I definitely had the nervous nineties,” Malan said. “It really didn’t feel like I was going to get out of them to be honest.”His uncertainty no doubt cost Middlesex their final batting point, but you could forgive Malan the tentativeness. Since his last Championship century, 121 against Warwickshire in August 2012, he has passed 90 on three occasions and failed to make it count. Two of those failures were this season, the last coming against Middlesex’s current opponents, at Wantage Road in May.While he has been a steady performer in limited-overs cricket, Malan’s four-day form is best described as frustrating. On song, he is a real treat to watch, timing the ball emphatically, with the classical verve of a left-hander. But for all the languid strokeplay, he has a tendency to overthink his own game. Even today, in the moments before he clocked short leg on the head, he had decided on the ball he would receive (a bouncer) and the shot he would play (a clip over third man) before neither came to pass.Last season was no different as he endured one of his leanest periods at the club, with just 387 runs in 19 innings. Unhappy with his limited-overs form, he dedicated most of the winters of 2011 and 2012 to that aspect of his game, while assuming his four-day game would fall in place accordingly. It didn’t, and Malan soon found himself out of the XI.”It’s probably the first time I was properly left out at Middlesex,” he said. “It was a big hit for me but it brought me back down to earth and reminded me that I can’t neglect one format and concentrate on the others.”Even in that time out, he would spend many a match day at Lord’s netting on the Nursery Ground or the indoor school with Middlesex’s batting coach, Mark Ramprakash. At the time, some felt a few days away were best, but he has shown so far, with almost 600 runs by the end of July and an average of 45, that it was worthwhile. As for the destination of this game, Malan was looking to the first session on Tuesday and a wish for at least four more Northants wickets. By his calculation, that would allow Middlesex to sculpt the game as they wish.In the 26 overs they had at the visitors before the rain came, they had accounted for Peters, James Middlebrook and Matthew Spriegel. However James Kettlebrough, on Championship debut, has looked assured so far for his 42, particularly against the usually economical Tim Murtagh, who he took for five boundaries in the 29 balls he faced off him. As the light got worse, his partner Rob Newton did well to survive a barrage of well-directed short balls from Steven Finn. No doubt there will be more to come.
